Lifestyle Travel & Adventure Feature Docs
To pick just a few from our packed collection – Nature and Wildlife’s Uncharted Amazon takes us deep
into the jungles of Peru where we encounter a range of animals as they strive to cope with the ever changing
conditions of the rainforest. In History, we go back to 1066 in Europe’s Last Warrior Kings where a Viking, a
Norman and a Saxon battle it out for the English Crown. Science uncovers why so many hundreds of planes
crash in one of the most dangerous places to fly in Alaska’s Air Crash Investigations. We are taken on a
journey in People & Culture from Italy to Sweden with a group of Palestinians and Syrians in the award
winning On the Bride’s Side. In Lifestyle we watch the drama unfold as we follow a group of brash and
gorgeous girls in Hot Grits. For Travel & Adventure we visit some of the world’s most exotic places with a
brand new series of Travel Bug and we unveil a huge selection of award winning Feature Documentaries.
It’s a big world out there, but we’ve got it covered!
Biomimicry: Biochemistry & BioGeometry
Birders: The Central Park Effect
Biomimicry is the science of borrowing nature’s evolutionary adaptations and applying them
to the human world. Natural blood thinners from bat saliva, anaesthetic from mosquitos,
antibiotics in bee honeycomb, and cryogenic secrets from the blood of amphibians – there’s
a new world to discover, if you know how to look.
A diverse group of full-of-attitude New Yorkers
reveals how a hidden world of beautiful wild birds
in the middle of Manhattan has upended and
magically transformed their lives.

Close to Death
Europe’s Largest Desert
One of the oddest natural adaptations is superdeep sleep. These near-death experiences
feature animals temporarily stopping their hearts
and brains; hibernating for months at a time and
employing a natural anti-freeze to keep their cells
intact. But as we explore this natural time travel, we
also discover that this lifestyle is not without risks.

Near
the cold Pyrenees of Iberia, surrounded by ancient and dark green forests, there is an
odd land where the rain is so scarce and the wind is always blowing. The soil is poor, there are
no trees and the landscape has become very much like the moon. This strange landscape is
home to incredible creatures with surprising behaviours. We’ll discover a place with a very dry
surface but a wet hidden heart that allows even aquatic birds and amphibians to live. Living in
such conditions is not easy and it’s only the toughest animals that will survive.

In the jungles of a remote archipelago in the
South Pacific, biologist Albert Uy is attempting to
do something Charles Darwin never could: catch
evolution in the act of creating new species. But
with the islands’ resources being exploited and
local wildlife at risk, it’s a race against time to gather
the evidence necessary before it’s lost forever.

Life Stories: Sleeping for Life
Meet My Moose
Sleep is as crucial as it is unexplored and
unexplained. The range is vast: all living things
sleep, but some for just a few seconds at a time,
others for more than 90% of their lives. A six-eyed
spider can stay still for months; snakes never close
their eyes; dolphins even speak while sleeping.
This is a truly eye-opening documentary.
High up in Canada’s Rocky Mountains, in a forest by a crystal-clear lake, a moose is born.
Chances are against it surviving at the best of times but with North America’s moose population
in steep decline, this calf faces unique threats. Its first 30 days are the most perilous of its
life. If it reaches three months, its chances for survival rise. At six months, its beaten the odds.
But if this calf is lucky enough to become a yearling, it will face the biggest challenge yet: the
instinctive wrath of the only creature that has ever protected and nurtured it — its own mother.

See No Evil
In the lush tropical rainforests of northern
Queensland, the largest surviving marsupial
carnivore on mainland Australia has remained
isolated and hidden from sight… until now! We
explore the life and habits of this elusive northern
subspecies of the spotted-tailed quoll. Join our
journey into the life of this beautiful but endangered
creature, a long-lost cousin of the Tasmanian tiger.
“See No Evil” portrays the daily life of three famous elderly apes who spend their days in a
retirement home; a film star, a scientist and an ape partially paralyzed down his left hand side.
We have watched and taught them for many years, as they have watched us. A sometimes
bitter, poetic recapture of the strange but intriguing relationship between Chimp and Man, as
‘remembered’ by the protagonists.

Time of the Goshawk
Uncharted Amazon
There are few better ways of witnessing humanity
in sync with nature than through falconry. In this
enervating documentary, we follow a young urban
man on a voyage back to nature. A call from an old
friend leads to an extraordinary weekend hunting in
the wild with goshawks. Graceful, but super-skilled
predators, this is a journey through natural beauty,
and to self-discovery.
Deep in the jungles of Peru, a silky anteater is fighting to stay awake and a mother humming
bird is struggling to raise her chick. The seasonal downpours are about to begin and the
rainforest’s animals must strive to cope with the changing conditions. Through millions of years
of evolution they have developed bizarre relationships and unexpected strategies to overcome
them, but for all their ingenuity, they were never prepared for the arrival of a new species on
the scene.

Wolverine: Ghost of the Northern Forest
1 x 60’
Wolverines are one of the least known and understood mammals in the Northern Hemisphere. These members of the weasel family are
powerful and versatile carnivores with bad reputations. Whether eating live prey or carrion, the wolverine’s feeding style appears voracious,
leading to the nickname of “glutton”. In reality very little is known about their lives, habits or social interactions. Elusive and shy they are the very
embodiment of wilderness and wild places. In many parts of their range they are like phantoms - more mythological than real.

Europe’s Last Warrior Kings
3 x 60’
A thousand years ago a Viking, a Norman, and a Saxon fought for glory – the crown of one small island on the edge of Europe. Within a single year,
two would be killed in battle, leaving just one of them victorious… rich and powerful beyond his wildest dreams. Using the latest analysis of ancient
documents, we reveal a story of lust for power and wealth, a fight for culture and belief, a tale of family feuds and betrayals that changed Europe. Military
historian Dan Snow will be at the heart of the action travelling to the locations where the story happened – places like Caen, Norway, Stamford Bridge
and Saint-Valery-Sur-Somme, along with Hastings and Westminster Abbey. Entering a world of Viking longboats and axe-wielding warriors he’ll conduct
key experiments to get to grips with supplies, transport and most importantly of all, weapons, to piece together this extraordinary story and bring a brutal
ancient world to life in episodes of vivid drama.

The Team
Vulva 3.0: between Taboo
and Fine-Tuning
Kenya has long been considered Africa’s
success story—relatively stable and
ethnically harmonious. But following their
December 2007 Presidential election,
everything changed. An alternative local
response is the creation of a taboobreaking TV soap opera, “The Team,”
following the struggles of a co-ed multiethnic soccer squad to overcome their
differences, both on and off the pitch.
“Showing the vulva scares off bears and
lions, makes wheat grow higher, calms
storm tides and demons fear it. The devil
runs away. The vulva is omnipotent.” A
powerful image, but the presentation
of the female genitals continues to
irritate. Decades of retouching and antipornography campaigns have lead to a
public image of the vulva that is far from
reality.
