Written by Jerry Bock, Sheldon Harnick, and Joseph Stein, Fiddler on the Roof is
the popular story of Tevye, a milkman in a small Russian village, who tries to
protect his daughters and his way of life from a rapidly changing world. Among
the well-known songs featured in the show are "Tradition," "If I Were a Rich Man,"
and "Matchmaker."

2016 SUMMER SCHOOL
Summer School credit courses have strict attendance guidelines due to the limited time
for classes. In most classes, students are allowed to miss only two classes, and if they
miss a third time, they are removed from the class. If the summer school class is half
the normal summer school time frame, such as First Aid/CPR/AED, then only one
absence is allowed. Please read the summer school booklet to find out what the specific
attendance requirements are for each course. Please contact Anna Curtis if you have
any questions.
Onalaska Summer School Registration
Online registration at http://www.onalaska.k12.wi.us. Look for the link “2016

High School Summer School Registration has been extended through Friday,
June 8 or can be completed through the appropriate school personnel. Contact Lisa

FACT CHECK
MYTH: You only need to
take two years of a
world language.
REALITY: There is a
false belief that one
needs a world language
to graduate from high
school. Equally false,
there is a belief that
universities require two
years for admission.
The truth is, there isn’t
any requirement for
high school graduation.
However, universities
use world language as
criteria for selection.
The more you have, the
more likely you are to
gain admittance to the
university of your
choice.
The French Pronunciation Contest (Le Concourse Oral Français) was held
at Arrowhead Union High School on Saturday, May 14. Over 160 students
from schools across Wisconsin competed in the annual speaking contest.
Students could sign up to perform in one of six speaking categories;
memorized poetry, extemporaneous prose, reader’s theater,
conversation, music, or performance theater. Each category has a
corresponding level based on the number of years the student has been
studying French. Students are judged by three French-speaking judges
and given a rating of either A, B, or C. Students who earn two or three A
ratings earned a gold medal. Students who earned one A and two Bs
earned a silver medal. Onalaska High School had 28 students participate
among the six categories. The following students earned a spot at the
state competition. For memorized poetry: Dominic Buswell, Madison
Glynn, Jacob Hitchler, Asa Luken, Tony Nguyen, Allison Frauenkron, Josh
Sly, Sadie Turner, Jaxon Dobbins, Lily Benrud, Zaria Wright, Ricky Cheng,

Social Host Ordinance passed in Onalaska in August 2013
Social host penalizes anyone who provides a location for underage alcohol drinking to take
place, regardless of who provides the alcohol. Anyone breaking the social host law faces a
minimum fine of $1,000 and up to $5,000.
Social Host FAQs:
A
“social host” is any person(s) who knowingly allows possession or consumption of
underage drinkers on private property. Even 18-21 year olds can be held liable as a “social
host”.
“Private property” has been defined as “any privately owned land or building of the
unincorporated area of the County and includes vacant land as well as residential,
commercial, business or farm property.”
The law does not include a parent’s own child consuming alcohol in their presence;
however, allowing someone else’s child to consume alcohol on your property would be
illegal.
Underage drinking can cause serious health and safety consequences. Serious second hand
effects of underage drinking endanger public health, safety and quality of life. Social Host
Ordinances reduce alcohol harm, crimes and costs attributed to underage drinking.
Parents: Please provide safe, alcohol-free activities for our youth.
Be at home when your
teen has a party and refuse to supply alcohol to anyone under 21. Talk with other parents
about not providing alcohol at youth events. Report underage drinking to law enforcement.

GRADUATED SENIORS:
The OHS Students Services staff would like to congratulate all graduates and wish them the best of luck in
the future! We love to hear how our past graduates are doing, so students should know they’re always
welcome to come in and tell us what’s new.
Final Transcripts
At graduation practice, seniors filled out forms as to where their final transcripts should be sent. Your
student’s college will likely send a letter asking them to have this final transcript sent. Final transcripts were
mailed June 2, 2016. If a graduate still needs to request that their final transcript, please call or stop by
Student Services.
Consider a Head Start
Western Technical College offers options to get a head start in college. Western offers several courses over
the summer, either online or on campus, that may transfer to the university or technical college you will be
attending in the future. Registration is easy and tuition is reasonable. It is important to verify that the course
taken will transfer and apply towards graduation at the school you will be attending.
Graduating seniors with entrance scores of 11-15 on the ACT English test or 25-55 on the Compass Writing
test, should consider Western’s Developmental Communications class, which will meet 8:00 am – 11:20 am
Tuesday through Thursday mornings, June 13 through August 4 at the La Crosse Campus. Students who
successfully complete this course with a grade of C or better can register directly into a college level credit
English class at Western without retesting.
Interested students should contact Western at 785-9553 to explore these options.
Going to Minnesota?
Reciprocity Applications Available Now!
To receive IN STATE TUITION, students planning to attend a state college or university in Minnesota must
register for RECIPROCITY. This form is ONLY available ONLINE starting in April at:
http://heab.state.wi.us/reciprocity/index.html. You can also find this link on our website. There are NO
significant changes in the immediate future regarding reciprocity agreements between Wisconsin and
Minnesota.
Get Your Financial Aid Before it Runs Out!
There is still some time to fill out financial aid information. Find more information about earning money for
college on the “Paying for College” link on the Student Services website. To apply for financial aid, the Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) must be filled out online at fafsa.gov. Be sure to register for a
PIN # at http://www.pin.ed.gov/ BEFORE filling out the FAFSA form! Financial aid online worksheets are
available in Student Services. Be sure NOT to use FAFSA.com. THIS IS A SCAM SITE that will charge
you!
UW System Placement Tests
Seniors who will be attending a UW campus this fall should sign up to take the UW Placement Test. The placement test results will
be used to assist students and their advisors when registering for classes. Tests are given at multiple UW System sites on multiple
dates. Students do not need to take their placement test at the college or university they plan to attend. Students can find more
information and a link for registration at http://testing.wisc.edu/centerpages/regionaltesting.html. Each site offering tests will
provide students with information about any fees charged for testing. Students not attending a University of Wisconsin System
school should contact the institution they plan to attend for placement test information.

Rising Seniors – Class of 2017:
Don’t Forget Your Campus Visits
Students and families who have not visited campuses (technical, 2-year or 4-year) are encouraged to do so soon! Get
a feel for which school “fits” for you! While it’s important to meet with admissions counselors and take the official
campus tour, it’s also helpful to take your own personal tour. Check out the places they don’t show you, talk to a
student in the student union about what they like about the school, as well as what they are frustrated with. Pick up a
campus newspaper to see what’s important to students and soak in the environment. If you don’t feel like the school
is a good fit, it may be a difficult place for you to find success.
Wisconsin & Minnesota’s Private, Non-Profit Colleges Summer Visit
Programs
Did you know that the average net tuition at Wisconsin's private, nonprofit colleges is under $5,500? Or that 99% of
full-time freshman receive financial aid?
Wisconsin’s Private College Week is July 11-16, 2016. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour campuses, talk to
admission and financial aid representatives, meet professors, see residence halls, eat the food, and meet students.
Visit http://www.wisconsinsprivatecolleges.org/visit/register-private-college-week-visit for more information and to

Minnesota’s Private College Week will be from June 20-24, 2016. Visit http://mnprivatecolleges.org/mpcw for
more information and to register.
Changes for Class of 2017 Students Applying to University of Wisconsin
Schools
Several UW System admissions offices have changed details about their guidelines for students who will be applying
as new freshmen for fall 2017. These are the most significant changes:
UW-Eau Claire no longer requires two years of a single high school foreign language for admission
UW-Madison no longer requires the writing portion of the ACT
UW-Stout now lists a profile of its admitted students from last fall, and strongly encourages a fourth year of
math for some majors
UW-Whitewater is becoming more selective and will now typically admit applicants from the top 35% of
their class

UW-Madison Applications
UW-Madison has recently joined the Common Application. Students applying to UW-Madison for the fall
2017 term will be able to use the Common Application. This is expected to increase the number of
applications received while making it easier to apply for those who may not have considered UW-Madison
otherwise. Students will answer the same essay questions and pay the same application fees whether they use
the UW System or Common Application process.
College Application – Personal Statements
Applicant statement prompts for UW campuses are changing for the fall 2017 application. Applicant
statement prompts can be found at this site
uwhelp.wisconsin.edu/new-application-statements/Fall2017.pdf .
Students who would like to apply to a UW campus for fall 2017 may begin using the application for
admission on August 1, 2016. The first day that they can submit those applications is September 1, 2016. The
application is at apply.wisconsin.edu .
Each admission office has its own priority dates or deadlines,
which will be published by the UW System in the fall. As a
rough guide, the UW System and your OHS Student Services
office recommend that students submit their applications by
Thanksgiving.

Tips for taking the ACT test – June 11, 2016
If a Junior wishes to retake the ACT in June, here are some tips that can help make your test day go smoothly:
•
•
•
•
•
•
Check your calculator.
Be sure your calculator is permitted for use during the math section; visit actstudent.org to find out if your
calculator is allowed.
Make sure you have your ticket.
If you don’t have your ticket yet, sign in to your ACT web account and print your ticket now. If you wait until
test day, you could experience delays if there is heavy server traffic or if you have trouble logging in.
Make sure you have a valid photo ID.
Check out the ID requirements on the Test Day Checklist at actstudent.org and make sure you bring your photo
ID on test day.
Make sure to bring your printed ticket and valid photo ID to the test center.
Without both your printed ticket and a valid photo ID, you won’t be admitted to test.
Don’t bring your cell phone into the test center.
If your cell phone goes off during the test or if you are caught using it at any time during testing -- even during
breaks -- you will be dismissed and your test will not be scored.
Make sure your test counts (don’t cheat).
Your answer document will not be scored if you give or receive assistance during the test. If you suspect
someone of cheating on the ACT, let us know. They’ll take it from there.

Physical Examinations - Athletes, cheerleaders and dance team may not practice for or participate in interscholastic
athletics until the school has written evidence on file in its office attesting to:
•
Parental permission each school year
• Current physical examination by a licensed physician or Advanced Practice Prescriber (APNP).
-Examinations performed after April 1, of the current year are good for the following two school years. A
“green card” signed by the physician, parent/guardian and student is required for the first year of eligibility.
An “alternate-year card” signed by only the parent/guardian and student is required for the second year of
eligibility.
Example – A student who received a physical examination on April 1, 2016, and turned in a “green
card” signed by the attending physician or APNP, would be covered for the 2016-2017 school year.
That same physical would cover the 2017-2018 school year after the parent/guardian and student
complete the “alternate-year” card.
-Examinations performed before April 1 of the current year are good for the remainder of that school year
and the following school year.
Example – A student who received a physical examination on March 31, 2016 and turned in a
“green card” signed by the attending physician or APNP, would be covered for the remainder of the
2015-2016 school year. That same physical would cover the 2016-2017 school year after the
parent/guardian and student complete the “alternate-year” card.
• Acknowledgment that the SCHOOL DISTRICT OF ONALASKA DOES NOT PROVIDE ACCIDENT,
MEDICAL, OR DENTAL INSURANCE FOR STUDENT ATHLETES.
As of July 1, 2012 Wisconsin’s State Statute regarding concussions was put into effect. Below is basic
information as to what the state statute states and what needs to take place prior to each sport season.
"At the beginning of a season for a youth athletic activity, the person operating the youth athletic activity
shall distribute a concussion and head injury information sheet to each person who will be coaching that
youth athletic activity and to each person who wishes to participate in that youth athletic activity. No person
may participate in a youth athletic activity unless the person returns the information sheet signed by the
person and, if he or she is under the age of 19, by his or her parent or guardian."
On Monday, June 27th, the Booster Club will be holding its annual golf outing
which is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year. The golf outing helps raise
money for athletes of all sports at Onalaska High School. For more information,
