Park, so you can do a bit of exploring without a car! The bus 2 takes you to/from the college:
http://www.exploreacadia.com/route2.htm. The full bus schedule can be found at
http://www.exploreacadia.com/
Students with Scholarships will get a work assignment in their registration package. Work
assignments require about an hour of your time each day (before, between, or after classes). The work
times will be on your worksheet. Each work-assignment has a set time to be accomplished. We will
schedule work assignments so they don’t conflict with class time, but we do need your help. We have job
descriptions, which you will pick up at registration. If you have any physical limitations, we will make
sure to accommodate them.
The campus: The COA campus is right on the beautiful Frenchman Bay in Bar Harbor Maine. Acadia
Trad School has made arrangements with the College to use rooms in a number of different buildings.
Classrooms are numbered 1 – 20 and are shown on your campus map. Your schedule lists the
classroom number where your class or workshop will be held.
The College of the Atlantic is an environmental studies school. They are very eco-conscious. In your
packet you will see information about the college recycling etc. Please try to be eco-friendly. For
example, bring your own water bottles, they can be refilled on campus.
Campus rules: open alcohol is not allowed outside on campus. If you are over 21, you can drink
responsibly inside the Seafox building or in your room.
Pets are not allowed on campus unless they are personal support dogs.
Smoking is not allowed in or near any campus buildings.
There is a 9:30 noise curfew on campus. Late night sessions need to be indoors. Please don’t play late at
night in your dorm room, it will probably disturb people trying to sleep. All dorm buildings have public
rooms on the ground floor where sessions take place and sometimes go all night. Have fun!
Students who are under 18: You need to be accompanied by an adult who is signed off to be your
legal guardian. The adult needs to be on campus, but not attend workshops or classes or pay a fee.
The class day (morning): In the morning there will be two class sessions each 1.25 hours long in
your major instrument. The first class session runs from 9:00 to 10:15. The second session runs from
10:45 to 12:00 noon.
The class day (afternoon): Each afternoon there will be two workshop periods (1:15 – 2:30 and 3:15
– 4:30, each with a dozen or more workshop options to choose from. Registered students do not need to
sign up for workshops. The workshop schedule is in your packet. You can choose to attend any
workshops you like (try to stay at your skill level).
Break times: each day there are three breaks:
• Morning coffee break: 10:15 – 10:45AM
• Lunch break: 12:00 – 1:15PM
• Afternoon coffee break: 2:30 – 3:15PM
Coffee and tea and small munchies will be available in Seafox at break times. Please note: the goodies
provided for break-time snacks are baked by volunteers. If you have food allergies to nuts or gluten or
other food items please understand that we cannot guarantee that foods do not have any allergens in
them.
Small donations for coffee and munchies are appreciated, but not required. Your donations help us
purchase high-quality fair-trade coffee and locally baked goods.
Since a lot of people have to squeeze into a small coffee-room space, we ask that after you get your
coffee and goodies you move out of the room or away from the table as quickly as possible to let the next
person in.
Recording devices for classes: One main objective is to learn by ear. You are encouraged to bring
recording devices to classes to help you after the class. Sheet music is typically not provided, but some
instructors may have it for you if you ask.
Campus dining: Campus meals are provided at the Blair Dining Hall to people who have purchased a
meal ticket in advance. Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that you can purchase food without the prepurchased meal ticket. Campus rules on food are subject to change without us knowing.
• Breakfast: 7:30 – 8:30AM
• Lunch: 12:00 – 1:00PM
• Dinner: 5:30 - 6:30PM
If you have food allergies that we need to know about, please let us know in advance so we can inform
the kitchen
On Wednesday, COA kitchen provides lobster for an extra $15. If you want lobster on Wednesday,
please drop off $15 at our registration desk (there will be a sign up sheet); cash only for this please.
After hours club/Late Night Sessions: each night, starting on Sunday, there will be sessions in
Seafox, Blair Tyson, Davis, Withcliff, and Dearing (and possibly other class rooms). The sessions usually
start around 10:00PM and go until 2:00 in the morning or later.
• A limited number of non-students may attend the after hours club for $10. All nonstudents must register at the seafox registration desk. Please don’t bring your friends in without
checking in; our contract with the college requires that we keep track of who is on campus.
• Please adhere to basic session etiquette: don’t dominate the session; play in sessions that are
at your level (or play quietly if you are in a session that is above your level).
• This is a family friendly event, please drink and act responsibly; there are children
around.
• To make sure as many people as possible can participate in the sessions, there will be sessions
for all levels and styles. There is typically not a session leader; we encourage you to round up
your fellow students and get it started. More info about sessions will be available at the seafox
registration desk.
• We ask some students to be session leaders for intermediate/slower sessions (by style). If you’d
like to lead a session, please let us know. We’ll make sure you have a room available.
Getting to town: Bar Harbor is a short (1 – mile) walk from campus. There are lots of shops, grocery
stores and restaurants. It can be very busy in town, so give yourself some extra time for getting around
and through lines.
Using the Seafox kitchen: the kitchen at Seafox has some refrigerators/freezer, stove, sink and
plates. There is nobody to clean up after you. PLEASE KEEP THE KITCHEN CLEAN. Don’t leave your
dirty dishes for others, there is nobody assigned to clean up after you.
WiFi: Campus wifi is available. Instructions for logging in will be provided at the school.
Merchandise: Acadia Trad School has a stock of Trad books, t-shirts, coffee mugs, hats, and a few
small instruments (whistles, bodhrans, harmonicas, etc). You can purchase these in the Seafox lobby
during the week.
Concerts: Students who are registered for the whole week get a 50% discount on the four faculty
concerts (for $11, regular price is $22). Please purchase your tickets in advance on line. User your
concert code that was sent to you with your registration confirmation. Type in the whole code exactly as
it appears (e.g. MON2345); don’t leave off the MON or the it won’t work. Concerts sell out, so don’t
wait.
Student concert: on Friday there will be a student concert open to the public. Acadia Trad School
students get to play on a really great stage in a really great room. This show is free for all students
regardless of whether you play or not. Non-students ticket price is $5. We encourage all students to
participate; it is a really fun event!
Lobster Wednesday: On Wednesday, there is a special lobster dinner offered. It costs an extra $15
for students who already have the full meal plan. If you don’t have a meal plan and still want a lobster, it
costs $25. We will have a sign-up sheet at the lobby and cash is required at the time you sign up. If you
don’t want lobster, no worries, the regular meal is still served.
Up-to-date information: as things happen and change during the week, we will post updates in the
Seafox lobby area. Be sure to check out the posting board at break times.
Emergency/First Aid: a small first aid kit is available in the Seafox lobby. If someone is injured and
in need of emergency medical attention, call 911 and let them know you are at the COA campus. If
you’re not sure where you are on campus, ask somebody. Acadia Trad School staff also have walkie talkies and cell phones for emergencies. There is a hospital and fire department with EMT in town
(within 3 miles).
The emergency plan will be reviewed during the orientation sessions.
Bottled Water: The college is working hard to limit the environmental foot print caused by bottled
water. They have installed water bottle fillers around campus. Please bring your reusable water bottle
with you if you have one. Limited bottled water may be available for sale, but there probably won’t be
much.
Photo day: Each year we shoot a group photo. The group photo is usually Weds or Thurs. Keep an eye
on the white board for more info.
Fun: have fun!! This is all about having a great time with great people.

Session Etiquette
We have lots of sessions every day and night at Acadia Trad School. We encourage everyone to
join in. In the evenings the sessions really get going and run into the wee hours of the
morning. Session etiquette has a lot of “don’ts” in it, but remember, this is supposed to be fun.
DO PLAY. DO HAVE FUN. Here are some guidelines:
Slow sessions vs. advanced sessions: Slow sessions are for everyone, but the tunes are all
played at an easy tempo so that pretty much everyone can keep up. Advanced sessions play at
the tempo of the person starting the tunes. If you are a beginner or have a hard time playing
fast and keeping an even tempo, slow sessions are best for you.
Ad-hoc sessions: Oftentimes a few people will be just sitting around playing tunes. Feel free
to jump in, but unless you are an advanced player, listen a bit and find your spot. Play quietly if
you can’t keep up.
Session genre: Some sessions are mostly Old-Timey or mostly Irish, or mostly Cape Breton,
or Cajun or whatever. When you enter a session listen a little. If you introduce a tune, try to
stick within the genre of the session.
Don’t play loudly if you are not able to keep up: As a general rule, play quietly if the
session is more advanced than you are able to play.
Don’t dominate the session, only start your share of tunes: Regardless of your level,
let people around the circle start tunes. If your skill level is not quite up to the average for the
session, it is best to start fewer tunes. If your skill level is about right for the session, then start
your share.
Have fun!
Morning Warm Up
Another Tradition
Even before you even unpack your instrument for
the day, get your body ready to play!
Back in the day, you would have a full day of physical
work before you had a chance to play. Not so much
these days.
Just as tuning your instrument is essential to making
beautiful music, keeping your posture aligned and
your body flexible will help you play your best and
aid in preventing common injuries.
We will do a daily 20 minute warm up to improve
posture and flexibility and deepen your breathing.
You don’t even have to be fully awake to participate!
Join Nancy Neff at the Gates Auditorium any morning from 8:30 to 8:50.
Disclaimer: “If you have pain (other than simple stiffness or soreness) in any part of your body, a history
of health troubles or an existing medical condition, it is essential that you check with your physician before starting these exercises. If you experience pain, instability, tingling or numbness in any part of your
body - or if you feel dizzy – during any exercise, you should stop doing it at once to avoid the possibility of
injury.” APTA Book of Body Maintenance and Repair

2016 Afternoon Workshops
Workshops listed alphabetically by instructor’s last name.
Richard Backes: Irish/Tenor Banjo
The tenor banjo became popular in the early 1900s, where it was played in early American jazz. The
tenor banjo became popular in Irish music later in the century when Barney McKenna of the Dubliners
picked it up. Barney tuned the tenor banjo like the octave mandolin, GDAE, making it easy to play
fiddle tunes (the fiddle is also tuned GDAE but one octave higher). In this workshop, Richard will teach
Irish-style tenor banjo. Students will learn some tunes and to play triplets and incorporate other
ornaments into the music.
Richard Backes: Beginner Whistle
Richard Backes plays fiddle, whistle, tenor banjo, Old-Time banjo and makes fiddles. He plays regularly
at contra dances and sessions. This workshop is geared to people who know nothing or very little about
the whistle. Richard will cover basic techniques and a simple tune. Whistles can be purchased at the
school for about $20.
Riley Baugus: Clawhammer Banjo
Riley represents the best of old time American banjo and song. His powerful singing voice and his
expert musicianship place him squarely in the next generation of the quality American roots tradition.
In Riley’s banjo workshops, we'll be learning Southern Appalachian clawhammer banjo tunes and
techniques, mainly in the "Round Peak" style, from NC. The afternoon workshops will be taught at the
skill level advertised for each session.
Riley Baugus: Old-Time Songs
Riley represents the best of old time American banjo and song. His powerful singing voice and his
expert musicianship place him squarely in the next generation of the quality American roots tradition.
In this workshop, the focus is on the song, not the instrument. Riley will teach students how to
approach the songs with appropriate old time instruments (guitar, banjo, or fiddle). You do not need to
play an instrument to participate in this workshop.
Mike Boyd: Bodhran
In this class students will learn the basics: how to hold the tipper and the drum, and how to get different
sounds from the instrument. The class will also introduce basic reels, jigs, and triplets. Bring your own
bodhran. Beginner workshops do not require any previous experience with the bodhran. Intermediate
workshops are for people who can play a bit, and maybe has some experience playing at sessions, but
would like to improve their skills.
Amy Cann: Fiddle Who's Afraid of the Little Black Dots?
When you're driving a busy interstate, you mainly watch your lane — you can't monitor all the traffic in
all directions and still keep your own car centered. Music reading is similar: part of the trick is knowing
what not to look at or worry about. This workshop will help new readers understand 1) how the system
evolved in the first place, what it's good for, and what it's not; and 2) what to pay attention to and what
to let flow by. [If you've always wondered why written music seems so daunting, this will help you
streamline your eyes and stop getting mired in too-much-information.] We'll focus specifically on the
literacy skills most useful for decoding jigs, reels, and waltzes.
Amy Cann: Fiddle Why Does It Hurt When I Do This?
Does something hurt when you play? Do your hands cramp up or your shoulders pinch? Is there a
particular technique or style you'd like to be better at, but your body seems to be resisting? This
workshop is for fiddlers and others who want to find a more fluid, balanced way of playing. Maybe
you're older and the creaks and groans are catching up with you, maybe you're young and want to stave
them off for as long as possible. We'll cover basic ways to stay relaxed, self-monitor, and self-correct, as
well as address each participant's specific needs.
Amy Cann: Fiddle Breaking the Speed Limit
Have you reached a bit of a plateau? Has your "fastest possible" rate been stuck in the same place for a
while? Fiddle playing involves all sorts of terraced techniques; certain ways of handling the bow or
manipulating the fingers work fine during beginning stages...but then need to evolve. This workshop
will help you move up a level through clear, specific right and left hand skills.
Amy Cann: Fiddle Vibrato!
That subtle, heart-tugging throb that adds so much to airs and waltzes -- how do you do that?? How do
you gently move a hand that's been carefully staying in one place for years? How do you add just
enough, without going out of tune or sounding like a nanny goat? It's a bit like riding a bike -- you start
off slow, maybe with training wheels, and try until you get it. You might not "get it" in one workshop,
but you will get a clear sequence of activities to work through until it's ready to "click."
Amy Cann: Fiddle Technique Upgrade "Open Clinic"
Especially for folks who aren't currently taking private lessons, this is for anyone who wants to "level
up" on a specific skill. Would you like your intonation to be cleaner, your bow more stable? Would you
like your sound to be richer, your ornaments crisper? This open workshop is for *you* to shape, to solve
old nagging problems or step up and explore new challenges.
Amy Cann: Fiddle Put Down The Book
Do you read music fluently -- but struggle to learn quickly "by ear"? Do you go to workshops and sit
near the back, waiting for the handout sheets at the end or the chance to go home and listen to your
recording over and over? This workshop will help you learn to hear in "bigger chunks", develop an
internal vocabulary that allows you to identify and store what you hear more fluently -- a "zip file" for
your ears.
Amy Cann: Fiddle for Violinists
Can you play Vivaldi with verve, Beethoven with brio -- but your fiddle tunes fall just a little flat? Are
your jigs and reels missing a certain something, but you don't know what? If you're a trained classical
player, you automatically follow a set of internal rules -- and so does a trained fiddler. Developing an
authentic trad sound -- in any tradition -- requires two things: learning to hear the new rules, and
letting go of the old ones. In order to start fiddling, you partly have to stop violin-ing. This workshop
will help you do both.
Liz Carroll: Fiddle Tunes
Liz Carroll has written hundreds of great fiddle tune that are played in sessions and kitchens all over the
Irish music world. In this workshop Liz will introduce selected tunes on her fiddle. Participants may
bring other instruments and play along, but fiddlers will get the most out of this workshop.
Liz Carroll: Irish Fiddle Bowing Techniques
Fiddle tunes are played in Scottish, Old-Time, Cape Breton, and Irish styles. It is the approach to the
tunes that makes them sound distinctive to one style or another. As one great fiddler once said: "The
Irish fiddle style is what make the tunes sound Irish!" This workshop will focus on Liz Carroll's Irish
fiddle technique. Students will learn Liz Carroll bowing, ornamentation double stops, cuts and more.
Liz Carroll and John Doyle: Irish Music
Liz and John have performed and recorded numerous albums together. They were nominated for a
Grammy award and invited to play at the white house for president Obama’s St Patrick’s Day party. Liz
and John will focus on how to arrange Irish tunes with different instruments working together so that
the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. They will deconstruct some of their most powerful sets
and discuss how they arrangements are created. If you are interested in developing or improving your
band arrangements, this workshop is for you.
John Doyle, Nuala Kennedy, Eamon O’Leary (the ALT): Irish Songs
This ALT is one of the very best bands performing Irish songs backed up by great instrumental music.
There is simply no better act on the scene today. In this workshop, The ALT will teach some of their
songs and with a focus on how to approach harmonies and melodies in Irish music. Songs will be taught
to players who bring their instruments to the workshop; however, no instrument is required to come
along and learn the songs and voicing of the music.
Dan Faiella: DADGAD Guitar Accompaniment
DADGAD guitar tuning is one of the most popular alternate tunings for accompanying Celtic and New
England music. In this workshop, learn how to provide strong but sensitive support for traditional Irish
fiddling and singing. Find out how to make particular use of the unique attributes of DADGAD.
Liz Faiella: Irish Fiddle
Learn a traditional Irish tune and how to make it sound Irish. This workshop will delve into tips and
tricks for bowing and ornamentation. Plus, we'll explore techniques for picking up tunes by ear in an
Irish session setting.
Eden Forman: Old Time Fiddle
In this workshop Old-Time master fiddler, Eden Forman, will focus on bowing techniques and tunes
that give Old-Time music the distinctive sound so familiar in Southern Appalachian music. Students
will learn how to interleave double stops and ornamentation into Old-Time melodies.
George Fowler: Maine Heritage Tunes
Maine Heritage Tunes. George will present some of his favorite tunes from the repertoires of revered
Franco-Maine fiddlers Simon St. Pierre and Lucien Mathieu, as well as discuss their style and history.
George Fowler: Two-Steps, Marches, Polkas
These three old New England and Canadian dance tunes are closely related. George will introduce an
example of each, show the differences in how they are played and used, and give you a few ideas for
finding and learning a few more.
George Fowler: Waltzes for Dances
Playing Waltzes for Dancers. There’s a special touch needed to keep waltzes in good flowing rhythm for
dancers. George will teach an easy waltz, and demonstrate what’s needed to make it just right for
dancing. There will also be time to explore some great tunes to add to your repertoire.
Kimberley Fraser: Cape Breton Dance (I, II)
Cape Breton Dance is a distinctive fast step dance style that shares similarities with Irish, Scottish, and
Acadian dance but has it's own "close to the floor" sense about it. The Cape Breton style, with its focus
on close-to-the-floor footwork, is more closely related to Acadian dance than to Irish. This course is
designed for intermediate and advanced dancers. It is progressive from class I to class II; students are
expected to have been in the previous day's class.
Nic Gareiss: ‘Quare’ Traditions
This workshop draws upon traditional music, song, and dance to explore the ways in which gender and
sexual minorities, 'Quares' of all colors and stripes, perform their identities. We'll learn traditional
gender-bending, cross-dressing songs from England and Appalachia, try out pro-pleasure percussive
dance styles from Ireland and Canada, read the work of openly gay Irish-language poet Cathal Ó
Searcaigh, and celebrate the stories and work of contemporary traditional artists who perform their
gender and sexuality through their folk practices, revealing ways we can embrace the bit of Quare
within us all!
Nic Gareiss & Maeve Gilchrist: Harp meets Dance
Nic and Maeve perform together as a harp and dance duo at major festivals around the world (including
Acadia Trad Festival). In this workshop, Nic and Maeve will work with students of harp and/or dance
teaching how techniques and approach of making dance and melodies blend as one. This workshop
brings together percussive dance with the beautiful melodies and sounds of the Irish harp. This
workshop is for students who have some experience with harp or dance. For harp players, the focus will
be on how to play the harp with the dancer. For the dancers in the class, the focus will be on how your
feet and body can become the canvas that express on which the melody is physically expressed.
Maeve Gilchrist: Harp
Maeve Gilchrist grew up in Scotland with Scottish and Irish parents. Music has been part of her life
from an early age. She is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music and unquestionably a world-class
harp player. This workshop, for intermediate and advanced players, will explore the Irish harp and
melodies. Maeve will focus on technique, lilts, melody, and tunes.
Christopher Gray: Bodhran
Chris has many musical talents including Irish and Scottish pipes, whistles, guitar, and bodhran. From
Mt. Desert Island, Chris has recorded several albums and has become one of the leading musicians in
the burgeoning Maine trad scene. Chris’s first instrument was percussion, where he learned to play in
jazz combos. Chris is also now one of the area’s leading Bodhran players, having studied with some of
the masters at Acadia Trad School. In this class, Chris will teach intermediate level bodhran. Students
are expected know the basic beats for reels and jigs and have their own drum. This class will focus on
how to extend the bodhran from the basic beats into a dynamic instrument that enhances the melody in
sessions and on recordings.
Christopher Gray: Pipes Demo
Bagpipes come in many different styles and sizes, and are quite different among the seven Celtic nations.
Most people are familiar with the Great Highland Bag Pipes, but there are many more pipes such as the
Irish Uilleann, Scottish Boarder Pipes and small pipes (to name just a few). Chris Gray is a master of
the pipes, and will play tunes on several different pipes and talk about their history and differences.
Christopher Gray: Uilleann Pipes
The Uilleann pipes are the signature sound of Irish music. Chris performs on the Uilleann pipes with
several Irish music ensembles. In this workshop, Chris will teach tunes and techniques on the Uilleann
pipes.
David Greely: Cajun Songs
Cajun music and songs have roots in the French/Acadian culture of Canada. In Cajun music the fiddler
often sings songs and plays the tune. Fiddler David Greely is a treasure chest of Cajun songs inspired by
both the Acadian roots and life in Louisiana. In this workshop, David will teach Cajun songs and talk
about the roots and history of the music.
Matt Heaton: Standard Tuning Irish Guitar
Is it possible to get that "sound" without having to retune? The answer is yes! There are numerous
players who use standard tuning exclusively, and with some adapting of chord voicings, it can be a great
sound in Irish music. In this workshop, we'll cover how to voice chords to make them sound "more
Irish" without retuning.
Shannon Heaton: Irish Flute
In this workshop, Shannon will teach a tune by ear and work with players to advance flute skills (tone,
playing with a strong rhythmic approach, fine tuning ornamentation, considering phrasing/where to
breathe). Shannon will also introduce techniques for building confidence and comfort (setting a focus,
avoiding common psychological pitfalls of learning and playing in public, starting sets, changing tunes).
Seán Heely: Scottish Fiddle
Seán is an award wining Scottish Fiddler from Virginia who has majored in musical performance at
George Mason University. In this series of workshops, Seán approaches the question: “what makes the
Scottish style of fiddling different from Irish and other styles?” From elegant, haunting slow airs,
mighty pipe marches, and the wild and rugged Strathspeys and Reels, Scottish music is distinctive from
other styles. The tunes hearken to the beautiful Scottish countryside and it’s rich musical culture. In
these workshops you will learn the techniques and stylistic idioms of Scottish Fiddle music as well as
common session tunes. Each workshop is self-contained, but if you take all three, you will have covered
all the subject areas and be on your way to mastery of the Scottish fiddle.
Ed Howe: Improvising the Tune
Ed Howe is a master of fiddle improv! He regularly sits in on sessions and live performances quickly
capturing the essence of the tunes and complimenting the exacting melody that is being played by the
band. In this workshop, Ed will teach techniques for taking tunes beyond their tight structure where
you can add a new dimension of creativity to the music.
Ed Howe: Live Sound
Ed Howe is the owner of "Sound of Perfection" a Maine based live-performance sound company. Ed is a
sound engineer for Acadia Trad School where he uses advanced equipment, including a wireless control
system run from mobile devices. In this workshop, Ed will show students the festival sound setup in
Gates Auditorium. He will discuss the technologies and their appropriate use.
Kieran Jordan: Irish Sean-nós Dance
Sean-nós (“old style”) Irish dance is a joyful expression of movement and sound. Considered to be one
of the earliest forms of Irish dance, sean-nós is an improvised solo style, with footwork danced close-tothe-floor, a relaxed upper body, and a playful dialogue between the dance and music. In this class,
students will enjoy listening and responding to traditional Irish music while gaining confidence as
percussive dancers. Beginner dancers will focus on timing, technique, and building a body of basic steps.
Experienced dancers will learn more detailed “battering” rhythms, while creating longer step sequences,
practicing smooth transitions, and developing a personal solo style. Please wear comfortable shoes with
a smooth hard sole (leather or hard rubber soles are preferred). Dancers are encouraged to bring water,
a notebook, and a recording device.
Kieran Jordan: Traditional Old-Style Irish Step Dance
Old Style Irish Step Dancing developed more than 200 years ago in Ireland. Traveling Dance Masters
who composed intricate hornpipes, jigs, and reels were renowned for their detailed teaching methods,
feisty performances, and signature movements and styles. Their steps like “drums,” “rocks,” “tipping”
and “toe clicks” have developed over the years into our modern Irish dance vocabulary. Old-style step
dancing allows dancers of any age and level to learn traditional footwork that can be danced to uptempo, traditional Irish music. Kieran's old-style steps include dances learned directly from master
collectors and teachers, such as Joe O'Donovan, Patrick O'Dea, Michael Tubridy, as well as other
dancers throughout the US and Ireland. Students in this class will learn the simple, yet beautifullystructured, patterns that are the foundation for all of Irish step dancing.
Kieran Jordan: Irish Set and Céilí Dancing
Irish Set and Céilí dances are energetic folk dances that weave beautiful patterns through space and
allow the dancer to connect and interact with a partner, a group, and the music. This class will
introduce the footwork and movement figures for set dancing (groups of 8 people), as well as two-hand
(couples) dances, and more. Open to all levels.
Gus LaCasse: Slow Airs for Fast Players
For fiddlers who like to play fast, mastering the art of a slow air/listening piece can be a bit of a
challenge. Focusing on Niel Gow’s Lament for his Second Wife, this workshop will deconstruct slow air
techniques such as phrasing, bow work and fingerings. We’ll slow things down and learn as the Scottish
say, “to bring tears tae a gless een” by playing from the heart.
Emmanuelle LeBlanc: Advanced Whistle
Emma LeBlanc is one of the greatest Celtic Whistle players on the music scene today. This workshop is
for advanced whistle players who want to learn tunes and techniques for playing Acadian style tunes on
the whistle.
Emmanuelle LeBlanc: Advanced Bodhran
Emma LeBlanc is a master percussionist performing with the band, Vishtèn. This workshop is for
advanced players who want to go beyond the basics of jigs and reels.
Pastelle LeBlanc: Acadian Dance
This class is for dance students who are already familiar with at least one style of step dance. In this
two-part progressive workshop you will be introduced to many of the important steps and styles of
Acadian dance. The Acadian style of step-dancing is very lively and percussive. Students will be learn to
dance jigs and reels as well as podorythmie (foot percussion). This class will be progressive; students
should plan to attend both classes if possible.
Pastelle LeBlanc: Acadian Chair Dance
Dancing while sitting has its roots in the Acadian traditions. The “chair dance” was developed by the
people who wanted to dance to the music but due to restrictions, were not supposed to be seen up-right
and dancing about. In this workshop, students will learn fun chair-dance steps, a sitting down dance
that accompanies fiddle music or is danced on its own.
Pastelle LeBlanc: Acadian Mouth Music
Song and voice in Acadian music is as important as any of the instruments that provide the melody.
This workshop will provide a demonstration of various types of Acadian songs. There will be discussion
of their origins and how they have evolved in different parts of Acadia. The student will learn a chanson
à répondre (call and answer song) and turlutte (mouth music) No knowledge of French necessary!
Danielle Paus: Intermediate Irish Harp
The Irish Harp is a signature instrument of Irish music dating back to the 15th century. Bards and
traveling musicians in Ireland played the harp in homes and gatherings. This workshops is geared
toward the student who is comfortable finding his/her way around the harp, Danielle will teach a tune
and discuss arranging possibilities for varying levels of playing abilities. Sheet music will be provided at
the end of the class. One or two harps may be available at the class, so if you don’t have one, let us
know; we’ll see if we can reserve one for you.
Julia Plumb and Baron Collins-Hill: Playing for Contradances
Do you play for contradances or do you wish you could? Either way, this workshop could be for you.
Julia and Baron are widely recognized as some of the best contradance duos in New England. They
perform under the band name, Velocipede, and are one of the few touring bands that focus on
contradance music. This workshop will focus on ways to improve your techniques for playing dances
and how to get dancers to want to come into the hall when you play.
Julia Plumb and Baron Collins-Hill: Slow Session for Beginners.
One of the best ways to learn or improve your skills in playing tunes is attend slow sessions. This
workshop will be for anyone wanting to play some tunes at a pace that allows everyone to join in.
Julia Plumb and Baron Collins-Hill: Crooked Tunes
Crooked tunes are the ones that have some funny beat, note, or measure in them that makes them
different from the standard forms that are most commonly played. They are not "square," so to speak.
Banjo master, Tony Trischka, described crooked tunes as: "Things aren't all foursquare. They're quirky
around the edges. Just the way players of yore felt it. Instinctively correct rather than technically
correct." In this workshop, Julia will introduce crooked tunes with some guidance on how to approach
them and what to watch out for when you encounter one in a session.
Lukas Pool: Old Time Banjo
Lukas is owner of the Ozark Banjo Company in Saco Maine. When it comes to banjo, Lukas is the real
deal. He is a two-time national champion old-time banjo player who grew up making instruments with
his dad, Scott Pool, at the family music store in Mountain View, Arkansas. Lukas attended the Berklee
College of Music and has been playing and making banjos all his life. In this workshop he will be
teaching some of his favorite old-time banjo tunes with an emphasis on techniques, including
ornamentation and the clawhammer style.
Nicole Rabata: Irish Whistle
Nicole spent several years in Ennis, County Clare honing her technique on Irish flute and whistle. In
this class, we will cover the basics of breathing, hand position, ornamentation and articulation. We will
discuss various regional styles of playing, and an emphasis will be placed on listening and imitation. A
variety of simple tunes will be taught by ear, and bringing a recording device with you is strongly
recommended. This workshop is open to all levels.

and is a regular at Acadia Trad School, having taught and performed in years past. In this class Chris

Clawhammer banjo style is a signature sound of Old-Time music. This style brings rhythm and melody
together seamlessly with a distinctive sound that brings up images of rocking chairs on creaking
porches and mountain cabins. In this workshop, Pete Sutherland will cover the basics of clawhammer
banjo style using some good Old-Timey tunes to carry the lesson along.
Pete Sutherland: Old Time Fiddle
Fiddle tunes are at the very heart of Old-Time music. "Tunes" (as they are commonly called) are played
at sessions and dances on many different instruments. Well-played tunes make you want to dance.

Sutherland will introduce fiddlers to some the great Old-Time tunes. Students will learn about the tunes
and Old-Time style of playing them.

in sessions and shows alike. This workshop is appropriate for students who want to just sing and/or
play. This workshop is not instrument specific. Bring your favorite music box and join in.
Pete Sutherland: Shape Note
Shape note singing is often referred to as early American harmony singing, an alternative way of
reading music through shapes and patterns on a page. Developed to assist folks to learn to harmonize
without needing to know the fundamentals of music theory. Shape-note hymns are often sung by
groups of hundreds of people at conventions creating a wall of beautiful harmonic sound. Shape note
singing was introduced in New England in the early 1800s as a way to facilitate congregational singing
at sacred services. The practice eventually took root in the southern congregations where it was most
developed. There is a recent renaissance in shape note singing across America in folk music scene. In
the class Pete will introduce students to shape note singing bringing these wonderful choral sounds to
the Acadia Trad School. No singing experience required.
Angela Szucs: Cape Breton Dance
In Cape Breton dance came with the music from the "old country" when the settlers from Scotland,
Ireland, and France settled on the great Island at the northern end of Nova Scotia. Over the centuries, a
distinctive dance style was established that is related to the styles of their ancestors, but is clearly
different. In this workshop, students will be introduced to the Cape Breton style over a progressive
series of classes (I, II). Beginner dancers can start at class I. Level II classes require some knowledge of
dance.

Anna Whiteley: Making a Song Your Own
Start with a favorite song, and learn how to make it your own. Basic traditional Irish and Scottish vocal
embellishments will be taught in the tradition of Irish ‘Sean-nós’ and Scottish Traveller ‘Conyach’
styles; as well as interpretive theory and pointers to help students feel comfortable performing their
songs for others.
Chuck Whitney: Beginner Whistle
This workshop is for people who want to play the whistle. You may have played some tunes in the past
or are just learning the very basics. Chuck will introduce the class to the instruments, present basic
techniques, and talk about ways to learn tunes by ear.
Chuck Whitney: Whistle Making
Chuck Whitney has been making whistles and flutes for over a decade. His whistles have been played by
some of the world's top whistle players and are now common in local Maine sessions. In this workshop,
Chuck will present the theory and techniques of making whistles and flutes at home from many
different types of materials, from wood to PVC.
2015 Visitor Information
ACCOMMODATIONS: All on-campus residences have shared common spaces. Bathrooms are co-ed
and can be shared by up to 6 people. Housekeepers clean the bathrooms and common areas daily, but
participants are responsible for their own bedrooms. All rooms have individual locks and front
entrances to the houses are also locked (room keys also open the outside door). Rooms have very basic
furnishings including: twin bed, desk, dresser/closet, pillow, and blanket. Each participant receives a
linen package consisting of twin sheets, pillowcase, two bath towels, and face cloth. There is an
overhead light in each room but if you wish to read in the evening we suggest you bring along a reading
lamp or headlamp. Other items you may want to bring for your room: a small mirror; a small fan (none
of our buildings are air-conditioned, and while there are usually cool ocean breezes, on occasion
summer nights can be warm). Please bring your own shampoo and bath soap.
FOOD SERVICE: COA’s dining hall serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner weekdays (Monday-Friday),
as well as dinner on Sunday. The dining hall is not generally equipped to take walk-in customers, so
your on-campus meals have been pre-reserved by your group. People with special dietary needs should
notify their group leader (who will notify the college) at least two weeks prior to the start of the
program. All meals are prepared from scratch with the best of what’s seasonally available.
WI-FI & COMPUTERS: COA’s wireless network is available in all buildings and many outdoor
spaces for use with your laptop, tablet, smartphone, or other device. We always recommend making
sure you have a fully up-to-date operating system and anti-virus protection for ease of network access.
If you need help trouble-shooting your internet connection, our IT Help Desk will be open during
breakfast and lunch at the start of your time on-campus. If you’re not bringing your own device, there
are public access computers in several locations on-campus.
CLOTHING/GEAR/LAUNDRY: Summer life at COA is very informal. Our coastal location
provides plenty of ever-changing weather, including sunshine and days when we are wrapped in fog.
During July and August, high temperatures usually range between 70 and 85 degrees F. This is often
accompanied by a sea breeze. There are not usually many insects, but bring repellent if you are
sensitive. Recommended items include: jacket/sweatshirt/sweater; rain gear; long pants and shorts;
swimsuit & towel (if you don’t mind cold water); comfortable outdoor shoes; hiking boots if you plan to
hit the trails; flashlight; camera; binoculars; sun screen. If you need to do laundry while you’re here,
there are several coin-operated machines on campus – bring your own detergent and quarters, as we
don’t have change or soap machines!
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES & SPORTS: COA does not have an on-campus exercise facility, but right
nearby you’ll find tennis courts, the YMCA, and a golf course, not to mention the trails, carriage roads,
and beaches of Acadia National Park. You are welcome to bring your own bicycle, kayak, or canoe, and
all can also be rented in town. Kayaks may be launched from the college pier. Please be sure to securely
lock all equipment you bring – theft is rare but does happen.
MAIL: Mail may be addressed to you/your group c/o Summer Programs, College of the Atlantic, 105
Eden St., Bar Harbor, ME 04609. Please have senders specify which group you are with to help us
ensure your mail gets to you.
ETC: Sorry, no pets! Service animals are allowed. Smoking is only allowed in designated outdoor areas.
You can find an online campus map here: http://www.coa.edu/campus-map.htm
Directions to COA
Street Address: 105 Eden Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609
By Car:
In Maine, follow Interstate 95 to Interstate 395 in Bangor. From there take Route 1A from
Bangor to Ellsworth. In Ellsworth, Route 1A will end at Route 3; follow Route 3 East toward
Bar Harbor. COA’s campus is about 19 miles from the Ellsworth shopping district, or about
eight miles from the head of Mount Desert Island. Our campus is on the left (ocean side) of
Route 3, just after the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel and the Bayview Inn, and before you arrive in
downtown Bar Harbor.
By Plane:
Bar Harbor Airport: Regularly scheduled flights are available to Bar Harbor Airport (in
Trenton) about 12 miles from campus. The Bar Harbor Airport is served by Cape Air which is
based out of Hyannis, MA, and Pen Air a branch of Alaska Airlines, with information on both
services at http://www.bhbairport.com/airline.html. They often have low-cost direct flights to
and from Boston that will not necessarily show up in online travel search engines. From the
airport, you can rent a car, take a taxi to campus, or hop aboard the free Island Explorer
Shuttle Bus (see details below). Local taxis that provide airport service include: At Your Service
Taxi Cab Co, 207-288-9222, AAA Taxi and Limousine Service 207-288-8294, and O’Pooch
Taxi Cab 207-288-3898.
Bangor International Airport: There are several domestic carriers for Bangor
International Airport, which is about 55 miles from campus (a little over an hour drive,
depending on traffic). Rental cars are available at the airport, as is the privately-run Bar
Harbor to Bangor Shuttle Service which requires advanced reservation (rates start at
$30/person): 207-479-5911 or http://www.barharborbangorshuttle.com/.
Other Airports: Many visitors fly into the Portland International Jetport (Portland, Maine,
150 miles), Logan International Airport (Boston, MA, 250 miles), or Manchester, NH (250
miles), where they can rent a car and drive to campus.
Free Island-Wide Shuttle Service: The Island Explorer is a free shuttle bus that takes
visitors virtually everywhere on Mount Desert Island. Clean propane-powered buses offer
visitors and residents easy access to the hiking trails, beaches, and carriage roads of Acadia
National Park as well as many hotels, campgrounds, and village centers. There is a bus stop on
COA’s campus, by the “Whale Skull” near the main entrance. The Island Explorer is equipped
with bike racks for those who wish to bring their bicycle with them. For guests flying into the
Bar Harbor Airport, the bus makes several trips daily between the airport and Bar Harbor
which includes the stop at COA. Bus schedules may also be found online:

Community Expectations
Vehicle idling is only permitted for 5 minutes on
campus.
Follow the parking signs and do not use commuter
parking locations: only park your vehicles in guest
and overnight parking locations.
Only pedestrians, handicap licensed vehicles, and
campus maintenance vehicles are allowed on gravel
paths on campus.
Everyone is welcome to walk and spend time in the
campus’s gardens, but please do not pick any flowers
or plants.
To reduce waste and honor water as a human right, we ask
our community and visitors to use only reusable water
bottles on our campus. Each public building provides filtered
cold and hot water via Blue Reserve water coolers. Reusable
COA water bottles are available for purchase in the COA
Admission Office
The compost toilets are turned once or twice per
week, and will produce a temporary odor.
If this odor persists for more than 2 hours, please
alert staff.
Please recycle and compost. All buildings and events
on campus have recycling and compost receptacles.
Thank you for your cooperation!

Compost
Toilets
One compost toilet
SAVES 11,280 GALLONS
of water a year!
Please help make it work efficiently by
following these easy instructions:
1. Add a scoop of wood shavings into
the toilet after each use.
2. ONLY human waste, toilet
paper, and wood shavings go in
the toilet. Do not discard any
feminine hygiene products or food
in the toilets!
3. Always keep the bathroom door, window, and
toilet lid closed upon exit. This will eliminate
odors drawn up from the composter.
To minimize water use — and maximize recycling — some buildings on
campus are fitted with waterless composting toilets. The human manure
from these Phoenix Composting toilets is used to fertilize the surrounding
landscape. COA alumnus Abe Noe-Hays ’00 of Full-Circle Compost
Consulting installed the toilets with Ben Goldberg ’90 representing the
firm. For any questions please contact COA staff.
