Down The Garden Path - Twilight Garden Tour
Friday, June 10th 4pm - 8pm
The Friends of the Haddon Heights Library invite everyone to the “Down
the Garden Path” Twilight Garden Tour on Friday, June 10 from 4 – 8 p.m.
Six distinctive properties make this year’s Garden Tour especially pleasing to
the senses. The gardens, which range from large to small and from formal
to casual, reflect the owner’s individual tastes and styles. Jump start your
imagination with unusual plant specimens, whimsical garden ornaments
and private spaces that evoke a sense of serenity and peace. Colorful annuals
and perennials, flowering trees, roses and winding garden paths converge to
delight both the novice and seasoned gardener.
The Friends of the Library is a volunteer organization that helps raise money
and awareness for the Haddon Heights Library. Tickets are $10.00 and are on
sale at the Haddon Heights Library, April Robin and Freshest Flowers. These
are all located on Station Avenue. For more information call the library at

MAYOR’S MESSAGE:
Dear Residents:
It’s one of my favorite times of year here in Haddon
Heights. Our community really comes alive in the
spring with outdoor events, sports, proms, graduations
and other great civic activities that make our town the
special place that it is. We recently had the HHYA
Opening Day Parade and Ceremony (which due to
the rather unfortunate weekend weather we had,
we had to move to a few weeks into the season!) As
always, the HHYA volunteers did a great job with the
event, and continue to put on a top-notch baseball
and softball program for our children. We also had a
very successful first ever Rhythm and Brews event on
Station Avenue, which I am told, brought many people
to our town who do not live in Haddon Heights. Those
folks had the opportunity to experience Haddon
Heights, to shop in our businesses and eat in our
restaurants. Our business district has something for
everyone, so anything that brings it more exposure is
good for everyone. I would like to thank the team at
Heights in Progress, led by Joe Gentile, for bringing us
that event and for bringing back our Farmer’s Market
for another season. The Haddon Heights Neighbors
Night Out Committee put on another terrific event,
Margaritas and Mayhem, in our Community Center.
Everyone in attendance had a great time and the
money raised from this event will hopefully push the
project to restore the Fountain by the train station over
the finish line. I would like to thank the volunteers
of the Neighbors Night Out Committee, led by their
chair, Jillian Soriano. Our town cannot be the great
community that it is without these and so many other
volunteers who give their time and talents. So again,
thank you and keep up the great work!
You may have heard or read a lot lately about our
project to replace the field lighting at McCullough
Field at the Devon Avenue athletic complex which is
used primarily by the Haddon Heights Soccer Club. I
am pleased to report that it looks as if we have come
up with a workable solution. As you might recall, a
safety inspection of the lighting resulted in a finding
that they were old and dangerous and had to be
removed. Unfortunately, last season the Haddon
Heights Soccer Club was forced to rent portable lights
and generators to power them to provide lighting for
evening practices and games. Those of you who were
down at the fields at the time probably noticed how
loud they were, the odors they emitted, and how close
to the fields they were located – which was less than
ideal from a safety perspective. They were also very
expensive to operate because they had to be rented
and fueled; not using the fields at night is just not a
viable option for us. We are lucky to have so many
programs that use McCullough Field so the governing
body had to fund a way to address the problem. After
many hours of effort by Council President Kathy Lange
and the Soccer Club, we have reached a solution that
we think will work. We will get new lighting installed
through a partnership with the Soccer Club, whereby
they are contributing some of the funds necessary to
make the down payment and defray some of the costs
of a long-term bond. The Borough will absorb the rest As always, if there is anything we can do from a
of the bond in later years, when some more current government perspective to assist you, please do not
obligations have been taken care of.

Do You Need the Summer
“Function Better Program”?
Now that the weather is warm and the
flowers are in bloom, there is an increasing
desire to be active outdoors. Gardening
activities, walks in the park, outdoor grilling
and playing games with young children are
some of the activities that many people enjoy each summer. If you are having trouble
with pain, endurance, bending, walking,
squatting and other movements that these
activities may require, the “Function Better
Program” at WORK-UP PHYSICAL
THERAPY may be just what you need in order to have a fantastic summer season!
The “Function Better Program” at
WORK-UP PHYSICAL THERAPY emphasizes
muscle strengthening and stretching exercises, activities to decrease pain, conditioning exercises on equipment as well as
personalized instruction to promote safe
and independent function. After completion of the “Function Better Program”,
many people report that they are pain free
and able to lead a more active and independent lifestyle.
WORK-UP PHYSICAL THERAPY is conveniently located at 135 East Atlantic Avenue
in Haddon Heights (just off Station Avenue).
Due to high demand, slots for the upcoming
summer session of the “Function Better
Program” are limited and filling quickly.
To reserve a slot for the program, call

funding projects like
this at all, because
these things cost tax
dollars. There are
some out there who
say we should spend
money
whenever
we need to for
whatever projects we
want, whenever we want. While I recognize those
viewpoints, I cannot subscribe to either of them.
The first abandons our town and its need for capital
spending and improvements. Abandoning our town
like that will result in a decrease in our quality of life
and in the things that make our town special. The
second abandons our responsibility to be careful
stewards of tax dollars, and that will also result in
a decrease in our quality of life. I believe the right
answer is to spend carefully and responsibly and
to come up with plans that work to ensure that our
residents benefit from improvements in infrastructure
and services. That is what we have accomplished with
replacement of the lighting. Over time, we will all have
to make some small sacrifices to cover the increased
costs, the results will be worth it in terms of property
values, community pride and activities for our youth.
We owe it to our kids. We owe it to our town. And we
owe it to ourselves.

is required for signs, windows, siding, and roofs. If you are contemplating a project
and are unsure of what is required, please call the Service Operations Center 856546-2580 and ask to speak to the zoning officer Ron Newell.

participation in school activities. They experienced a sample of college life by living
in a dorm, eating in the cafeteria and attend lectures and workshops. They also
learned about career choices and how to network with other delegates from all over
the state of New Jersey. During free time, there were organized activities, such as
swimming, crafts and after dinner programs. In addition to organizing and directing
all the activities of the GCI program, NJSFWC clubwomen volunteer their time and

The Heights Report
June & July 2016
FIRE DEPT.
Thank you, residents of Haddon Heights for your generous
support during our past month’s fund drive. Your donations
ensure that we are able to provide the high level of service
expected, and we couldn’t do it without you.
In the event a fire alarm is activated in your residence or
apartment building, do you have an emergency plan to evacuate, and are you aware of your building’s
procedures in case of such an event? If an alarm is activated in your building, the most important to
do is to treat as an emergency, and do not assume it is a false alarm. After the alarm sounds, proceed
safely to the nearest exit, calmly, and assist those in need, to get safely away from the building. Avoid
gathering near entrances, and around fire hydrants outside. Allow room for emergency responders
to get to work and investigate the alarm activation, but alert them to any concerns, for instance if
you smell smoke, or someone isn’t accounted for. For your safety, do not attempt to reset alarm
panel on your own. And wait for the all clear to return to the building. Procedures may vary from
building to building, but if you receive an order to evacuate, please do so.
Congratulations to Preston Antrilli for his successful completion of his Firefighter I training at the
Camden Country Fire Academy. Preston like all of us, are local residents, ready and willing to step
up to the challenge and serve his community. If this sounds like something that interests you, please
contact our fire prevention office during normal business hours, or simply stop up at the firehouse
on Monday nights. We’re located behind the library on Station Avenue.
As always, we’re available around the clock for you emergency needs by calling 911, and follow us on
Facebook to keep up with latest news and safety updates. We thank you for your continued support.
Sustainable Haddon Heights
Sustainable Haddon Heights invites you to visit them every Sunday from
9:30 am until 1pm at their booth “Sundays on Station with Sustainable
Haddon Heights” located adjacent to the Haddon Heights Farmers’
Market. Most weeks, the group will be having demonstrations on
various aspects of sustainability and gardening. Currently, the “Stop
Using Plastic Bags” project is underway. Stop by the table after you make
your purchases at the market. For each reusable bag you have used, receive an entry into the
weekly contest to win a reusable produce bag. Due to demand for the bag, they now also have
them for a donation of $3, less than cost, for anyone who wants them. Many people use the
traditional reusable bags at the grocery store but then take many of the small plastic bags in the
produce department. They are the least reused bags! These reusable produce bags take the place
of the small plastic bags. Forgot your reusable bag, stop by the booth and get a free one to use
shopping. It is yours to keep or you can return at a later date.
The tentative schedule is as follows:
• May 15 - Sustainable Lawn Care - Learn how you can save both your time and effort and the
planet with some tricks to having a healthy lawn.
• May 22 - Backyard Chickens - Learn about pets that provide breakfast as well as excellent
fertilizer and insect control in your yard. There will be a visiting hens for adults and kids
alike to pet.
• May 29 - Outdoor Water Conservation - learn about rain barrels, rain gardens and other
ways to collect water and decrease run-off. Special activity for the kids!
• June 12 - The Problem with Plastic - learn how you can decrease the use of plastic at home.

Could You Walk to Rio Di Janeiro?
Join us as we “Walk” to the Olympics!
Four years ago, to encourage fitness and have a little Olympic Fun,
we challenged residents to “walk” from Philadelphia to London, the
site of the 2012 Summer Olympics. Yes, we pretended we could walk
across the ocean and about 35 residents made the trip by the Opening
Ceremony.
This year, the XXXI Olympics will
be held in Rio Di Janeiro, Brazil
and we have until late August to
get there. It’s easier now - there’s a
selection of fitness devices or phone
apps to help track our progress. Or
use your trusty pedometer and set
up your log. So are you “game”?
There is an average of 2,000 steps to
a mile. (Or customize your device)
If you want to take the shorter,
water/flying route you need only to
log 4,786 miles.
If you want to go hard core, you could take the “walking route.” Starting
in Philadelphia and walking down through Mexico and across South
America to Rio Di Janeiro, Brazil the total is roughly 8,308 miles.
If you would like to try the “walking route” we recommend maybe
creating a relay team. This way
the team can slit up the miles
needed and work together to
walk all the way to Rio!
Can you make the trek before
the closing ceremonies on
August 21st? We are working
on the Honor System, you
can log your miles using your
devise of choice! Let us know
how far you made it by August
30th. (Email Kathy Lange at
[email protected]) Kathy
will have Gold, Silver, and
Bronze “medals” to award at the
September 6th Council Meeting.
Even if you don’t make it all the way, it will be fun to see how far you
can get - there’s plenty of interesting cities along the way. Be inspired
by the Olympic Creed… The important thing in the Olympic Games
is to not win but to take part just as the important thing in life is
not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have
conquered but to have fought well. Good Luck!

First Church of Christ, Scientist Up for Sale
Rose Fitzgerald - Historic Preservation Commission
Our Christian Scientist Church is up for sale. The congregation has
joined the Haddonfield church. This building, unique to the area and
loved by all, is not listed as a town historic site nor is it in a historic
district. But, because it is within 500’ of the White Horse Pike Historic
District which includes Fourth Avenue, alterations or demolition and/
or new construction will be reviewed by the Historic Preservation
Commission and Planning Board.
This church began as a Society in the fall of 1916 when 16 members of
churches in other areas decided to form a church in Haddon Heights.
In 1925 construction began for the curved roof building (see photo)
where Sunday school was held. The cottage- style church looks as if
it should be sitting on a rolling hill in the English countryside. With its distinctive wavy roof,
brick and stucco and massive fireplace and chimney, it is an example of the storybook Tudor
style that was popular for a brief time in the 1920’s. The steeply pitched roof appears to be made
of thatching. It is, in reality, constructed of wood and slate. These types of roofs are made up
of steamed cedar shingles, which have the ability to be shaped in curved formations. A certain
amount of creative underlying construction was required to support the heavy materials.
In August 1949, plans were drawn up for the construction of the church edifice. The church was
completed in 1952 and dedicated in 1966. Christian Scientist churches are not dedicated until
free of debt. The church interior is well maintained has half timbering, wonderful woodwork and
is in its original 1921 and 1952 built condition
with original doors, lanterns, shutters, hinges
and shutter dogs (possibly Samuel Yelling?).
12 The property is zoned residential but could
also be used for a church and/or a school.
Dan White is the realtor handling the sale.
We are sad to see this congregation leave. We
wish them well and thank them for their fine
stewardship of this beautiful building.

Haddon Heights Good Neighbors
The sun is shining, the days are getting longer,
and the summer months are right in front of us.
It’s grand to be living in a town, such as Haddon
Heights, to reap all of the beauty around us!
We often give pause to think about our neighbors
who might be having a hard time enjoying the
warmth of summer because of a medical problem
or a financial problem. We turn to each other and
ask what we might be able to do to help them.
Fortunately, the Haddon Heights Good Neighbors
(HHGN) organization is able to help brighten up
the lives of these neighbors.
HHGN was formed in 1979 to provide short-term
financial assistance of a material nature to residents
in need. As an organization of the people, by the
people, and for the people of Haddon Heights, we
pride ourselves on helping members of our town
when they are struggling. After all, shouldn’t a
sense of community come with
a sense of responsibility?
One way of helping HHGN to
accomplish its goal is to join
the organization which typically
meets the 1st Wednesday of
January, May, September, and
November. These meetings are
held in Borough Hall at 7:00
PM. New members are always welcome.
Another way is to make a donation to the
organization which will be used to help residents
in our community. Whether it goes toward rent,
utilities, groceries, or home repairs, we investigate
every request and independently determine its
worthiness. Our hands-on approach ensures that
money goes to where it is needed the most.
WHO ARE THE HADDON HEIGHTS GOOD NEIGHBORS? YOU ARE.
Haddon Heights Good Neighbors is a non-profit, non-sectarian, non-political organization. It has never had a
paid employee or officer. All work is done by volunteers, and anyone who makes a donation is a member. No
donation is too small and no act of kindness is too inconsequential! There are a couple of ways you can make
a donation. You may use PayPal with the following link: http://www.hhgoodneighbors.org/donate.
html Or, if you wish to make a donation by check, please make the check out to HHGN, and mail it to:

June & July 2016 The Heights Report
National Train Day celebrates the joining of the
Central Pacific and Union Pacific railroads at
Promontory Utah on May 10, 1869. The event
linked the east and west coasts of the country
and was instrumental in the settlement of
the west. On the local level, we celebrate the
construction of our 1890 passenger station by
the Philadelphia and Atlantic City Railroad.
The station was built by the Lippincott family
as an inducement for the railroad to have
a station stop at Haddon Heights. The
railroad was instrumental in building the
town. Building materials, coal, ice, and lumber
arrived by train. Passenger service to Atlantic
City, and Cape May provided recreational
opportunities. The Philadelphia connection
allowed passengers access to the national
railroad network and well as the opportunity
to live in the suburbs and work in Philadelphia.
This was the start of commuter society we still
enjoy today.

Haddon Heights Elementary Parent Teach Group
The Haddon Heights Parent Teacher Group (HH PTG) is pleased to announce that over $16,000 was raised during
the 2015/2016 school year. We would like to thank our amazing parent and teacher community for another wonderful
school year. All funds raised will be used to provide continued professional development opportunities for our
elementary school teachers, as well as offer unique programs in the arts, sciences, and technology for our students. We
would especially like to thank our board, committee, and program chairs, many of whom will be “retiring” from the

As you can see, with all of our “retirees” we are at a critical juncture for the 2016/2017 school year. Please consider
volunteering as a committee or program chair in order to save these programs and allow them to continue. Many events
can be put together by a small group of friends which makes the experience fun and worthwhile. The PTG is also a great
way to meet other parents in the committee and get to know our principals and teachers. Contact the PTG to learn
more about 2016-2017 planning and opportunities to engage at: [email protected]. Thank you for your support!

Improper Mulching Can Kill Your Trees!
It’s that time of year when everyone wants to clean-out and freshen-up their garden beds. They like
the “pleasing” look of mulch without the presence of leaves. Rather than rake up the leaves and
put them out for the town to compost, consider using a mulching mower and leave the clippings
on the lawn as fertilizer. Or, catch the clippings and use as free, beneficial mulch in your garden
beds. It is more “earth-friendly”. Don’t like the look of shredded leaves? Put a thin layer of more
attractive mulch on top of them.
There are many “green” benefits to applying mulch. Less fertilizer is needed since the mulch slowly
decomposes, improving soil fertility. It also helps maintain soil moisture, decreasing the need for
extra watering. Weeds are prevented from germinating and growing, so herbicides are not needed.
Mulch keeps the soils cooler in summer and warmer in winter. Mulch also makes maintenance
easier and helps prevent damage from mowers or string trimmers.
Unfortunately, there is a practice that the
general public now thinks is the proper way to
mulch around a tree or large shrub. It is referred
to as “volcano mulching”. We all have seen
it, especially in shopping centers, apartment
complexes and even on public property. With
this type of mulching, the mulch is applied
directly next to the trunk of the tree, often
extending a foot or more up the trunk. This
kind of mulching is very dangerous to the tree
and can actually kill it. It is among the leading
Improper “Volcano” Mulching!
cause of mortality in freshly planted trees. It
makes the tree more susceptible to fungus, insects and rodents, particularly voles which eat the
bark and roots. It also prevents water from reaching the root system of the tree. You can see an
example of “volcano mulching” in the photo. Even landscapers are guilty of doing this. They want
to please their customers who insist on it because they think it is the right way to mulch.
The correct way of mulching is called “donut mulching”. A ring of mulch, generally advised to be
about 3 inches deep, is put around the tree extending out as far, when possible, as the branches
extend. Minimal mulch, a thin coating at
most, is placed within about 3-4 inches of
the trunk. Therefore the mulch closest to the
trunk is in the shape of a donut.
Sustainable Haddon Heights encourages you
to mulch properly. Do not follow the lead
of your neighbors, family or friends. Be a
leader and an educator and tell others - even
a professional if you hire one - about the
proper way to apply mulch. Your trees will
thank you!

Friends of Glover Fulling
Mill Park Created
Friends of Glover Fulling Mill Park has recently been established by
Resolution of the Borough. As a Committee of the Borough, Friends
will help by planting a garden with bushes used in the dyeing of fabric,
with occasional cleanups of the park, and occasionally holding events
commemorating the Glover Fulling Mill.
In 1911 the Glover Family sold the Mill and surrounding seven acres to
the Borough for a new sewer and public works plant. The Borough has
been the custodian of the remains of the Glover Fulling Mill. In 2011 the
Borough sold six acres to Bob Meyer Communities for development of
houses on Fulling Mill Lane with the remaining one acre, which contains
the Glover Fulling Mill Archaeological Site, designated as a passive park
with entrances from Fulling Mill Lane and Sylvan Drive.
In June, the area immediately adjacent to the mill remains will be graded
and the remains fenced in. The wooded section of the Park will be made
“park ready” by John Ellis and the DPW with the assistance of Steve
Dorsey, Borough arborist. Westfield Associates
is preparing a sign describing the mill and
fulling process, its Revolutionary War history
and the Glover Family that will be installed
this summer. This park is being created with a
grant from the New Jersey Historic Trust. The
Borough will continue to own and maintain
this one acre park - the grass, the woods and
the fenced in remains of the archaeological site.
All interested residents are invited to join the
Friends of Glover Fulling Mill Park by calling

and their families have fun and adventure in a program
that builds character and instills values. Community
events, service projects, historical outings, camping,
hiking, fishing, orienteering and sporting events
are just some of the activities that Cub Scouts do with their families and
friends. Come out and see how much fun Cub Scouting can be! For more
information you can follow us on Facebook or email: [email protected]
Please plan walking time into your child’s school schedule
both for exercise and to keep Haddon Heights green.
The Haddon Heights Police Department and Crossing
Guards will support this movement. For more information

Haddon Heights Boy Scouts
Eagle Scout Project
On April 10, 2016, Patrick Hughes, of Haddon
Heights Boy Scout Troop 67, completed his
Eagle Scout Project at Glenview Avenue School.
Patrick designed and coordinated construction
of an outdoor classroom next to the school’s
garden.
The classroom consists of a bordered mulched
seating area with four picnic tables and a potting
station. He secured donations from Camden
County Conservation Company, McCahill’s
Landscaping, Home Depot, Lowes, Shop Rite,
Acme, The Pretzel Factory, and Krispy Kreme
which made this project possible.
Patrick enlisted the help of fellow scouts from
Troop 67 along with family and friends. The
staff and students were very excited to discover
this surprise on the morning of April 11th!
Patrick was recognized for efforts at the May
Board of Education meeting. Hopefully, Patrick
will receive the prestigious title of Eagle Scout
in the near future. Thanks, Patrick, for a job
well done!
