ONE DAY LEADERSHIP TRAINING
Instructors
Sarah Grant Reid
Sarah Grant Reid is a “child of Recovery International”. When she was 7, her mother joined the organization,
becoming the first Area Leader for Chicago and joining RI’s first Board of Directors.
Her father was Executive Director of the Mental Health Association of Greater Chicago, where Sarah worked
after college. She also volunteered in mental institutions in the Chicago area during high school.
Sarah served as Chairman of Volunteers, member of the Board of Directors and an International Services
instructor for the Dallas Chapter of the American Red Cross.
During 30 years in RI leadership, Sarah has been an Assistant Leader, Group Leader and Trainer. For 8 years, she was Area
Contact for North Texas. She was also a member of the Advisory and Marketing Committees and continues to serve on the
Conference Planning Committee.
For over 30 years, Sarah has been a professional speaker, presenter and trainer for organizations in the US, Europe and
Mexico, including Xerox, Rank Xerox, A.B. Dick and Sarah Elizabeth Communications, of which she is President.
Sarah is passionate about RI and Dr. Low’s Method and values the opportunity to continue to share her passion as a member
of RI’s Board of Directors and Chair of RI’s Program Committee.
Jack Nalbandian
Jack Nalbandian came to Recovery International in June of 2001. After his first meeting his favorite spot became
“symptoms are distressing but not dangerous” Jack suffered from panic attacks and was a frequent visitor of the
local emergency rooms. After his first meeting his ER visits stopped by using that one spot proving you only need
one spot to get started in RI and to start managing your symptoms.
Jack has been in leadership with RI since he began and currently leads two meetings a week. One in San Diego
and also one in North San Diego County in Carlsbad.
As Jack was better able manage his symtoms his love of music began to return. As a singer, songwriter, and keyboardist he
began performing at Recovery gatherings at the encouragement of Lisa Garcia. Jack also lead “Recovery” sing alongs with
original lyrics at the 2013 Leadership Conference and will be sharing them this year as well.
RI Technology and Tools Training Course
Teri Schmig
Teri was born and raised in Texas, but she happened to be in San Diego in 2004 when a woman on a bus
mentioned she was going to a Recovery International meeting. The woman briefly explained the organization
and how it had helped her. Teri began attending meetings the following week and has been an Assistant
Leader since 2009. Spots that helped her most were “Try, fail, try, fail, try, and succeed!” Also, “Do the things
we fear and hate to do,” and “Move your muscles, change your thoughts.” Today Teri has a Masters in Civil
Engineering, enjoys an average career, and lives an active, health-centered lifestyle with interests in running,
yoga, cycling, and travel. 2014 Leadership Training Conference | 5

Recovery International Strategically Aligned For The Future – How RI Leadership Will Grow.
Speakers
Christine Lewis, Executive Director, Recovery International, Introduction
Christine Lewis currently serves as Executive Director for Recovery International (RI). Christine leads the
organization in its mission to use the cognitive-behavioral, peer-to-peer, self-help training system developed
by Abraham Low, MD, to help individuals gain skills to lead more peaceful and productive lives. She works
closely with the Board of Directors developing policy and ensuring smooth governing and positive relationships
with members and recipients of services. Christine is responsible for providing leadership, as well as overall
administration and management of RI programs, fundraising, and business operations.
Prior to joining RI, Christine most notably led United Way efforts for 10 years as Chief Professional Officer resulting in one
of the largest mergers in metropolitan Chicago to serve over 80 health and human service care programs as well as leading
collaborative efforts in initiatives such as a free health clinic for low-income adults. She spent her early career in the private
sector, holding positions at Carron and Company and Crowe Chizek & Co., LLP. She also spent years consulting with an
emphasis on sales, fundraising and volunteer engagement. Christine’s life of service has included an extensive history of
community involvement from roles on human service organizations, supporting local libraries and adult literacy programs,
affinity groups as it relates to Native American and women’s issues, domestic violence, animal rights, faith based groups and
the performing arts. Ms. Lewis holds a Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Marilyn Schmitt, Board Member, Recovery International
Marilyn is retired after two long careers. The first was as an academic, teaching, researching, and publishing
on the history of art, mostly art of the Middle Ages, with some ancient and some modern mixed in. Then
Marilyn went to the J. Paul Getty Trust (parent of the Getty Museum in Los Angeles) and became a bureaucrat
/ politician / diplomat in a program that dealt with computerization of research materials in the humanities.
In her retirement, Marilyn has devoted much of her energy and time to travel, and to the work of her father,
Abraham Low. Through the Abraham Low Institute, Marilyn and her sister Phyllis, in consultation with Bruce
and Treasure Sachnoff, developed The Power to Change, a simplified version of the Recovery International System for use in
schools, corrections institutions, and veterans’ programs. Along with Celinda Jungheim, Bob Dey, and Tim Bulger, Marilyn had
the privilege to deliver The Power to Change in the LA County Men’s Jail (Twin Towers) for 1½ years, an especially gratifying
experience that stopped almost all violence in the unit. Since the Low Institute merged with Recovery, Marilyn has served on
the RI Board and its Executive, Fund Development, and Program committees.

of mental health innovation, leadership development, change management and human capital strategy.
Lieutenant Colonel Ryan Yantis, Communication Manager, Illinois Veterans Affairs
As a survivor of the 9-11 Pentagon Attack who was decorated for his actions on that day, Ryan Yantis moved
to Chicago in 2003 and found himself relatively alone in America’s third largest city. The support group of
other 9/11 Pentagon survivors was physically distant and he was far removed from the day-to-day of military
organizations, and new responsibilities required attention. But the PTSD from 9/11 and other military experiences
also demanded attention – which he tried very hard to ignore. Then he met – by chance and fortune – a World Trade Center survivor who led him into a larger group of
other fellow survivors. Forming their own “little VFW”, they met for nearly two years in group meeting, sharing their stories,
experiences, fears, and nightmares to heal. As a self-designated “lifeboat captain”, Ryan focused more energy and effort
helping others, and his healing was secondary. It was not until after surviving Stage IIIb Throat Cancer and in the midst of a
high-conflict divorce that he sought his own personalized treatment to face, accept, and address his PTSD. Ret..Lt. Col. Yantis, resides in Crystal Lake Illinois with his wife Sharon along with his three daughters where they are involved
with the U.S. Army Public Affairs Alumni Association, American Legion, the Association of the United States Army, and other
worthy military/veteran organizations. Their rescue dog Cletus is also a key partner in Ryan’s ongoing efforts to face and deal
with PTSD challenges. 2014 Leadership Training Conference | 7

Cliff Brown
Cliff Brown is from Los Angeles, California. Cliff went to his first Recovery International meeting in 1979 but
did not think Recovery was suited for him at the time. After a mental hospitalization in 1991, he was exposed
to it again but didn’t stay. Finally, in 1994, after three more mental hospitalizations for depression, Cliff came
back to RI and knew right away that this was something that might help him. Before Recovery, Cliff had a very
sporadic work life, but now he has been able to maintain a good average work life for many years. Cliff enjoys
inner reflection, gardening, weather, and moving his muscles at the gym. In addition, Cliff has participated in
12-step programs including Emotions Anonymous and Alanon. Cliff got married in 2002 for the first time at the age of 49,
showing him that finding a mate is not a hopeless cause for the person who has been saddled with difficult emotional challenges
for much of their adulthood.
Sandi Castro-Price
Sandi has been in Recovery since 1990’s. She grew up using RI method at home as her mother was leader
for ten years. She also was assistant leader at that time. She was able to go to leadership conference in 2013
in Chicago. She got inspiration to start her own RI-Discovery meeting in Englewood, CO. She started that in
December 2013. She has volunteered many places over the years. Recently, Sandi received the Presidential
Volunteer Service Award in 2013. Currently works for MCPN Metro Community Provider Network, a non-profit
organization supplies healthcare to low income clients. Her position is as an Administrative Assistant. Also
Sandi has taken on the role of Area Leader for COLO., WYO,N.M. She is a busy lady but still has time to stitch, play with her
dog, Nina, and spend time with her family.

Kathy Fosberg
I was born and raised in Omaha, Ne. I had an average childhood. I married quite young, 17, and at 23, in
1970, I was widowed and left with 2 small children. This is when I had my first breakdown. I sought help, but
no psychiatrist of counselor ever mentioned Recovery to me. I descended into a world of fears, phobias and
panic attacks, eventually becoming homebound, for ten years. I now realize I had PTSD, but I was labeled a
psycho-neurotic, depressive. I finally found Recovery in 1981. I was scanning the newspaper and there was
a letter in Ann Landers that could have been written by me. I looked in the phone book, found the number and
called. Recovery has totally changed my life. I became a Leader for the fist time in 1984, and have currently been a Leader
and Area Leader for the past 10 years. I also serve on the ASTT committee and offer Area Support for several states. I also do
Leaders calls once a month on the third Thursday at 1:00 CST. I am looking forward to the conference this October. Thompson Marron
Thompson has a certificate of completion for the Basic Level of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP). The volunteer
work she has done from 1995-1998 at the American Friends Service Committee as an assistant to an advocate
for rights for Indigenous Peoples has provided her with experience that guides her to appreciate Dr. Low’s
work. She has been attending meetings since 2010 and has been an Assistant Leader for about a year. One
spot she likes is to predispose oneself to peace. The language of Recovery International helps her practice that
fear is a belief and beliefs can be changed. Through practicing Dr. Low’s method she is making progress in understanding
that the best feeling is that through endorsing of oneself then it is meaningful to begin to see others doing that for themselves
and learn to be present with one another. It is such a pleasure to be able to participate in a conference with the idea of
becoming cultured.
Noel Rosales
Growing up, my life had been centered around me ‘being seen but not heard’. My environment: very, very
quiet and lonely. Most of my memories are of depression and loneliness. As an adult, I could not hold down
a job for very long; and, I had a very hard time following through with projects, both in my personal and
business life. In the late 80’s I was in and out of psychiatric hospitals every 2 to 6 months. Since then, I
was determined to find a solution that would allow me to do, ‘everyday life’ without wanting to take my life.
Not only did I suffer from depression, I had such high anxiety and fear that it would trigger my obsessive/
compulsive behavior ending in the result of hostile anger towards my family. Then in November of 2011, I was arrested
for spousal and child abuse. Ironically, my attorney was the one who introduced me to Recovery International meetings. I
was terrified at my first meeting because I had searched high and low for literature, therapist and groups that would help
me with my erratic behavior. I knew that I was not a “bad” person; I just needed help. Well, during the reading of MHTWT,
I knew that I was going to be okay. Dr. Low’s words were exactly what I believed in...”There are no hopeless cases”. The past 2 years I have committed myself to ‘paying it forward’ by accepting positions as Group Leader, Sacramento Publicity
person, Sacramento Area telephone person and Panel Discussion when needed. My life with my family is much healthier, not
perfect but I’ve learned...that’s average. SATURDAY OCTOBER 18TH GENERAL SESSION • MORNING

I have been attending RI meetings for five years and now lead two groups in the San Francisco area. I
run a small business with my naturalized Japanese-American wife, to whom I have been married for

in gathering information in North America and Europe. Our primary focus is arranging and coordinating
visits for Japanese research institutes to better understand policies and procedures, but we also do research.
I was a self-taught programmer and worked in the field for 11 years (before there was a World Wide Web.) I
am not only a RI apprentice but also a digital apprentice. I could have used RI back then. The workshop is about making sure

Judi’s diagnosis was depression with generalized anxiety and panic disorder. She heard about Recovery and
started going to several meetings a week. Her social anxiety and panic disorder made it difficult for her to
participate but reading the book, hearing how others got well and the social contact during mutual aid kept her
coming back. She improved and became a Group Leader. She currently leads the Sunday afternoon meeting
and functions as the San Diego Area Treasurer. She is so grateful to be a part of the Conference Committee and
help facilitate a conference session. Her fellow committee members and Recovery staff members have worked
hard to make this conference informative, inspiring and a motivating experience.

Ron Cottle
The first two Recovery meetings Ron attended did not go very well. Ron swore he would never attend again. A
NAMI friend conspired with Ron’s wife, Lois and finally got him to Karen Allgood’s high-average meeting. After
attending multiple meetings a day in Arizona for 6 months, he started and has led the Orem, Utah Community
RI meeting for the past 10 years. He is an Assistant Area Leader in Area #172 (UT/AZ/WY). He volunteers
on the RI Marketing and Communication Committee where he focuses on the need to develop and maintain
strong professional relationships, develop new tools to “improve our ability to invite” others and professionals
to join us and to use Dr. Susan Pickett’s landmark research to build and expand membership. Ron has brought his groups to this
conference and this is his 5th Annual Leadership Conference. His favorite part of the conferences: sitting in the huge RI meetings
at the end of the day at Leadership Conference with Recovery-ites from around the world!
