Lent was primarily established for catechumens – it was a time of preparation for those who were initiated into the Church by Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist. But the season of Lent also exists for those already initiated into the Church. Before he began his public ministry, Jesus spent 40 days in the desert to pray, fast, reflect, and confront the demons that boldly took him on. For the next 40 days, we walk through a similar desert. Even our liturgy has “desert” elements to it: purple (penitential) vestments, no Gloria, no Alleluia. As we begin Lent, our lives should parallel a similar entry into the desert as we: abstain from meat on Fridays; fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday; and attempt to assimilate the three hallmarks of the season into our daily lives: praying, fasting, and giving alms (or offering service to the poor). Either consciously or unconsciously, we might think that Lent exists to change God. Perhaps we feel that our Lenten practices will change God’s attitude toward us. Lent exists, instead, so that I might be changed; that I might become more like a child of God for the rest of my days, not just for the next 40. Here are some things that we might do so that we can live and act differently – both during this season and beyond: • Limit my use of social media, especially when I sit down for meals with my family and friends. Engage in a conversation with parents, siblings, and friends without turning to my phone or tablet for those 30-60 minutes. • Focus on a sin that I seem to “always confess” and pray each day during the Lenten season that, with God’s grace, I may overcome that sin. Perhaps that sin is something I do habitually: gossiping, taking the Lord’s name in vain, looking at inappropriate internet content. • Read 1 chapter from the gospel of Luke each day. Dedicate just 5 minutes of my _______ (you fill in the blank: morning, lunch hour, time I watch TV in the evening) and talk to God…and listen to God • Read and reflect often on the scripture passage Isaiah 58 which speaks about “real fasting” C uaresma - Hoy se celebra el Primer Domingo de Cuaresma. And realize that the person I serve is Jesus himself • Asistir a las estaciones semanales de la cruz - Viernes de las 6:30. • Get involved in our parish social justice ministry – HOPE. Join 20 other churches in Hillsborough county for justice. (p9) • Attend our parish missions. (This bulletin has more detailed information about those missions in the following pages.) Happy “Lenting.” May the change you experience renew you and re-create you into the holy and wonderful person God has always intended you to be. Parish Lenten Missions Parish Missions - the word "mission" means "to be sent." The purpose of a parish mission during Lent is to renew us so that we can be sent out into the world to share the Good News of Jesus Christ with others. There are missions being offered in English and Spanish. I encourage every parishioner to participate in them. A parish mission is a simple yet profound way to deepen our faith in order that we might share that faith with others. The Door of Mercy: Crossing the Threshold -- A Mission for the Holy Year of Mercy Stephen J. Binz—Catholic biblical scholar, popular speaker, and award-winning author—will offer our Parish Lenten Mission beginning February 21, 22, 23 Three Presentations: Be sure to get in touch with Thomas Sanjurjo, [email protected] to contribute to our bulletin. PAGE 4 FEBRUARY 14TH, 2016 NATIVITY CATHOLIC CHURCH Stewardship Bulletin Reflection Dt 26: 4-10; Ps 91: 1-2, 10-15; Rom 10: 8-13; Lk 4:1-13 M ost of us are familiar with the fact that there are Four Gospels — Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. We might be less acquainted with the detail that the first three are called the Synoptic Gospels — that is, they tend to include the same stories in a similar sequence. Thus, all three (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) report that Jesus spent 40 days in the desert, fasting and praying, and resisting temptation. Today’s Gospel reading from Luke presents St. Luke’s perspective of what occurred. That Gospel Reading is perfect for us on this First Sunday of Lent as we, too, symbolically enter “the desert” during these 40 days of Lent. In fact, all of our readings this weekend emphasize the fact that we need to place our trust in God just as Jesus did. The First Reading from the Book of Deuteronomy has Moses speaking to the Israelites about the whole issue of trust. Moses explains that He (and thus we) needs to acknowledge that everything comes from God. Furthermore, we need to place our total trust in God, and as a result of that trust, we need to pursue stewardship and to share our “first fruits” with the Lord. We may tend to say that we trust God, but do our lives and actions reflect that trust? The Second Reading and the Gospel affirm the importance of that trust. St. Paul, in his letter to the Romans, our Second Reading, emphasizes the nature of this trust. Paul says basically that believing is not enough; we must go deeper. Faith is not just believing; it means we trust the Lord completely; we place all of our hopes on Him. We need to strive during this Lenten period to have total confidence in Jesus, to place our salvation in His hands. “For one believes with the heart,” says Paul. Mere intellectual agreement with the facts of the Cross and the Resurrection is not enough. We must believe in our hearts, and we must trust in the Lord. It is in the Gospel from St. Luke that we find the ultimate trust in God. The devil presents temptations to Jesus; we, too, face temptations on a daily basis and this period of Lent is the time to truly deal with them. The devil presents three temptations to Jesus; the devil tempts Jesus to use His power to appease His hunger; he offers Jesus all the kingdoms of the world if Jesus will worship him, the devil. And he tempts Jesus to test God’s promise of protection. Jesus resists all because He trusts in His Father. In this Gospel Jesus fasts and He is hungry, but he is filled with the Spirit and that strengthens Him to resist and to trust completely. We sometimes have the opposite experience — our stomachs may be full but we have empty spirits. One of the major purposes of our Lenten journeys is to empty ourselves and allow our hearts and souls to be filled with the Spirit. Jesus experienced real temptations. He resisted them because He placed His total trust in God. We are called to the same kind of trust all the time, but especially during this Lenten season. With God’s help we can develop that deeper relationship with the Lord we all need.at everything comes from God.
