our chapter and community.
►Rebranding Workshop for Sorors Only
This workshop, to be held in May at the Power Center, will feature Carolyn Kennard from The
Workforce Solutions and is a preliminary to the full scale job fair in September. It’s objective is to help
sorors maximize their job search by identifying skills gained in the past and presenting them in a way
that can move them to a new job or new industry.
►Job Fair for the Community
This job fair named Keep Houston Working is a collaboration between the chapter and The Workforce
Solutions and will be held on Thursday, September 23, 2010 from 9am to 2pm at the Holiday Inn
Southwest, 6855 Southwest Freeway. It’s objective is to provide meaningful avenues to available jobs.
►Dialogue in Business Opportunities
Our second Dialogue will be held again at the Urban League in November.
This networking event will provide an exchange of information on identifying and executing new
business ideas and will feature a panel of entrepreneurs as well as experts in various areas of business.
It’s objective is to encourage entrepreneurship as an alternative to a traditional job.

Census 2010 Essay Contest

The Connection Committee sponsored an essay contest to raise awareness for the 2010
Census count. We asked 4th and 5th grade students in the Houston area to write
persuasive essays addressing the importance of the 2010 Census. Thirty-seven essays
were submitted.
The results of the Census 2010 Essay Contest are:

Special thanks to Soror Faye Phillips, Connection Committee Coordinator, Alpha Kappa
Omega sorors who encouraged their students and acquaintances to participate and the
thirty-seven students who submitted outstanding essays.

Debutante Guidelines. The steering committee recommends the following guidelines that
have always been in place in Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter:
Only members of Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter are eligible to sponsor any
daughter, niece, sister, family friend, etc., (unlimited sponsorship of potential
debs);
A Debutante must be a graduating high school senior, accepted into college, or
enrolled in college as a freshman or as a sophomore;
A Debutante must not have been married or engaged to be married; and
A Debutante must not be a mother.
Debutante Applications: Important Timelines, Dates and Submittal Requirements
Financial Sorors may submit recommendations of young ladies to be presented by
our Chapter beginning in April to Chair and Co-Chairs.
A non-refundable deposit (amount, TBA), is to be submitted with photo and
completed application by December 18, 2010.
Applications will be available beginning at the May meeting from Chair and CoChairs.
First Debutante Committee Meeting
The first Committee Meeting will be held at 9:30am on Saturday, June19, 2010, at the
Power Center.

HAIR STYLE & HEALTH PROFILE Wrap-up – This barbershop outreach event was held
on Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at the 32 Degrees Barbershop which is
located at 14800 Westheimer, Suite #1. There were 31 participants, 24 men and 7 women tested.
This event was coordinated by Soror Felicia Austin-Toliver.

AIDS WALK 2010 Wrap-up - This walk was held on March 14, 2010 at Sam Houston Park
(downtown). There were 28 sorors registered on our team roster and 20 actual walkers. We
raised $1,437.75. The team captain is Soror Angela Price.

MARCH OF DIMES March for Babies Wrap-up - This walk was held on April 25, 2010 at
Roberson Stadium (UH Central Campus). There were 35 walkers and we have raised $1,200.00
with monies still coming in. It is not too late to donate to the March of Dimes walk. The team
captain is Soror Y. Nicole Montgomery.

ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SOLIDARITY WALK- This walk is June 26, 2010 at a site to be
determined later. Our Basileus, Soror Tamara, will meet with the HMAC presidents to discuss
additional details. The coordinator for this walk is Soror Demetria Williams.

2010 Komen Houston Race for the Cure - This walk is Saturday, October 2 , 2010 at Sam
Houston Park (Downtown). To register for team Alpha Kappa Omega, go to the 2010 Komen
Houston Race for the Cure website at //www.komen-houston.org and search for team Alpha
Kappa Omega-Alpha Kappa Alpha. We will have a table for walker sign-up and use the
buckets on the tables in the June meeting. Sorors Rhonda Jordan and Kenya Steele-Neal are the
coordinators for this walk.

HEALTH RELATED FORUM for 2010 – We will not be able to partner with the breast
Cancer network of Strength because our Cluster is on Oct. 23, 2010. Soror Barbara Hayes
suggested that we sponsor a forum to discuss the impact of the new health care legislation and
possibly partner with the Connection. The date for our event will be Nov. 13. Sorors Barbara
Hayes and Felicia Austin-Taylor will continue to work on this event.

BLOOD DRIVE – We received a request from the foundation to assist in a blood drive with
Bobby English. The committee agreed to assist and Soror Jacqueline Brown volunteered to
coordinate with the foundation.

Purpose of the Committee: The committee shall plan the Alpha Kappa Alpha Solidarity
Walk. The Solidarity Walk will occur simultaneously around the world on Saturday,
June 26, 2010, wherever there is a chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. The
Solidarity Walk for Central Daylight time (CDT) is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. We are
walking for emotional, spiritual & and physical healing and wellness.
Goal: To work with HMAC to plan the Solidarity Walk.
Soror Rhonda Newhouse, Southeast Texas Cluster Coordinator, called the teleconference
to order on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. The purpose of the teleconference was
to see how far the HMAC chapters were in their planning for the Solidarity Walk 2010.
Each AKA graduate and undergraduate chapter president from the Greater Houston area
was invited to participate at the teleconference. Chapter president, Soror Tamara Cubit
asked Soror Demetria Williams to attend the teleconference and to give the planning
update for Alpha Kappa Omega. The HMAC Chapter presidents liked what had been
planned so far by Alpha Kappa Omega. The HMAC chapters will hold another
teleconference on May 26, 2010.

DELEGATES’ REPORT
The Shreveport Convention Center was the setting when the 78th South Central Regional
Conference convened there on April 8-11, 2010. More than 2,500 sorors from Arkansas,
Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas were in attendance. The South Central Regional
Director, Soror Gwendolyn J. Brinkley, presided over the conference.
The following are the highlights of the four day conference. I served as a convener at the
Basilei Institute. This workshop gave important information about being in a leadership
role in the sorority and gave tips on the following: how to have successful meetings, time
management, utilizing your Basilei Council and understanding your role as the leader.
On Saturday afternoon Attorney Carolyn House Stewart, First Supreme Anti-Basileus,
was the keynote speaker at the Public Meeting. Honors were bestowed on local citizens
who are making significant contributions in one or more of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s
program areas. The honorees were Bishop Larry L. Brandon, Community Service; Roy
Griggs, Business; Dr. E. Edward Jones, Religion; Henry Price, Arts; Dr. Pamela Higgins
Saulsberry, Education; Morris Taft Thomas, Arts and Willie C. White, III, Health. The
Public Meeting also featured New Dimensions Brass Quintet and Mrs. Elaine Provost,
Soloist from Zeta Lambda Omega Chapter.
The workshops were informative and I was assigned to Making the Connection Count:
Building Coalitions. This workshop provided methods to select supportive partners and
the process on how to build a working coalition. The second workshop was entitled
Making ESP Work Through 2010. The information provided in this workshop was on
best practices, resources and partnership supporting the Heart of ESP: An Extraordinary
Service Program. Sorors were allowed to provide suggestions for engaging and assisting
chapters on sustaining ESP Platforms initiatives.
Finally, I attended the Thursday Night Welcome, all Plenary sessions, Rededication,
Diamond, Golden and Silver Star and Legacy Breakfast, Regional Director’s Dinner,
Award’s Banquet and the Ecumenical Breakfast. The Ivies Beyond the Wall Ceremony
was nice Soror Hazel Hainsworth Young, the chapters’ last living charter member, was
remembered by over 100 sorors from our chapter in attended the ceremony.
Sorors thank you for allowing me to serve as a delegate to the 78th South Central
Regional Conference: Extraordinary Sisterhood with Preeminence…Embracing the Next
100 Years.

held in Shreveport, LA. I had the pleasure to actively serve and participate in the following committee meetings,

Opening Plenary Session and Rededication Ceremony
The Sorors of the North Louisiana Cluster provided a wonderful welcome presentation for the
conference. Delegates were officially seated, the conference agenda and 77th South Central Regional
Conference Minutes were adopted, Conference Officers were appointed and several International
Committee reports were provided. The Rededication Ceremony was led by Soror Mattelia Grays
and was touching and memorable. A preliminary report from the Regional Conference Registration
Committee included the following information: 2479 registered (366 Delegates); 1677 checked in
(277 Delegates). Money donated by the South Central Region included $4000.00 to AKArama
Foundation (in memory of Soror Linda White) and $5,000.00 towards the Haiti Relief effort.
Workshop - Making ESP Work
Soror Chelle Wilson, South Central Program Representative, served as the workshop presenter.
Chapters represented discussed their implementations of the International Program Targets. I was
asked to discuss several of Alpha Kappa Omega’s award winning programs: the High School
Leadership Committee’s All Male Workout, On Top of the Game Youth Business Plan
Competition and the Back to School Retreat. Sorors shared ideas and programs that have been
successful in their respective chapters.
Workshop – (Assigned Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Through the Years: A Competitive
History Trivia Game 1908-2009), However this workshop did not convene. I attended Protocol
102: Exemplary Sorority – Beyond the Basics
Soror Francine Gilmer, International Protocol Chairman, served as the workshop presenter. Items
discussed included: The protocol committee should be consulted for every chapter event and works
with all committees; the committee members should be courteous, kind and mindful of the feelings
of others and should not have a poor attitude. The committee should review all chapter invitations
before they are printed. Also discussed were dais, holding room and chapter meeting seating
arrangements and the correct pronunciation of Basilei (Basi-lay). A question and answer session
followed.
Alpha Kappa Omega received numerous awards at the conference. I would like to express gratitude to
all the Sorors who worked hard to make our chapter programs award winning. Finally, I sincerely thank
you for allowing me the pleasure to serve as a delegate for the 78th South Central Regional Conference.

Undergraduate Luncheon: Sorors in attendance was our own 23 SCRD, Soror Gwendolyn J. Brinkley; Supreme Basileus, Soror st
Barbara A. McKinzie; 21 Supreme Basileus Soror Faye B. Bryant and other members of the directorate. All undergraduate from the region paraded in one chapter at a time either stepping or chanting their favorite AKA song; each chapter was dressed in unison. The keynote speaker was Soror Shayla M. Johnson, Undergraduate Member‐at‐Large who delivered a great speech on sisterhood and benefits lifelong membership. Sorors Brinkley and McKinzie presented each undergraduate who achieved a 3.0‐ 4.0 GPA a gold medal signifying academic achievement. Conference Workshops ™
Welcome to the Good Life: Undergraduate New Initiates (March 2009‐ present) Presenters: Soror Melanie C. Jones, Second Supreme Anti‐Basileus and Soror Shayla M. Johnson, Undergraduate Member‐at‐Large. The workshop was standing room only as new initiates were quizzed on the history of AKA, knowledge of MOSP and Constitution & by Laws. Young sorors shared their individual campus challenges after having to take on leadership roles in their chapters without proper training. Sorors Melanie and Shayla gave great examples of how to utilize the Graduate Chapter as a resource and always refer to their documents when in doubt. The workshop allowed the undergraduates to vent openly about how to prepare to be the future leaders of our organization and the steps to take to achieve those goals. ™
Get with the Program: Programming on the Collegiate Campus; presenters: Soror Melanie C. Jones, Second Supreme Anti‐Basileus and Soror Shayla M. Johnson, Undergraduate Member‐at‐Large. Undergraduate Sorors were walked through step by step on how often their chapters should hold platform events; the planning of events; the target audience; building partnerships with the universities and record keeping. They were divided into groups of three and had to brainstorm on five programs ideas based a word chosen from the pink purse. The event was very interactive and allowed undergraduate to meet and work with other sorors not in their chapter. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent you at the 78th South Central Regional
Conference in Shreveport, Louisiana.
The following is my Delegate Report and reporting thereon as assigned by Basileus, Soror
Tamara Cubit at the 2010 South Central Regional Conference:

Pre-Conference Committee Meetings
Undergraduate Activities Committee (UAC): On Thursday, April 8, 2010, the
Undergraduate Activities Committee met to discuss the progression of the Undergraduate
Activities Committee thus far. The purpose of the Undergraduate Activities Committee
is to promote academic excellence amongst undergraduate Sorors. During the meeting,
the committee discussed the “Call for Nominations,” as the date was extended for all
undergraduate positions. Nomination Certification guidelines were discussed and all
Certification packages were to be submitted to all members of the International
Nominating Committee postmarked by April 15, 2010. The positions are 2nd Supreme
Anti-Basileus, Undergraduate Member-at-Large and Representative to the International
Nominating Committee for South Atlantic, Mid-Atlantic and North Atlantic Regions.
Additionally, Undergraduate Pins at the cost of five dollars ($5) were sold to fund the
Centennial Undergraduate EAF Endowment. The committee also provided the Boule
volunteer conference calls times and dates and encouraged undergraduate Sorors to
volunteer.
Finally, the theme of the UAC Blog is “Better Communication=Better
Participation;” the Undergraduate Activities Committee reminded undergraduate Sorors

Rededication Committee: On Thursday April 8, 2010, I also attended the Rededication
Pre-Conference Committee Meeting. The committee met and discussed the protocol of
the Rededication Ceremony.
North Louisiana Cluster Welcome Gala: “Giltz & Glamour Hollywood North
Louisiana Style” was the theme of the Thursday Night Welcome Gala. With lights,
cameras and action from the pink carpet to the walk of stars; the Cajun cuisine was
plentiful and delightful to all that attended the Gala. The sorors were entertained by
Louisiana’s own “Mike Ward and Band”.

Workshop 03 – Welcome to the Good Life: Undergraduate
Presented by Sorors Melanie C. Jones, Second Supreme Anti-Basileus and Shayla Johnson,
Undergraduate Member-at-Large
The workshop focused on the History of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., its governing
documents, and the role of the membership. Soror Jones addressed the importance of
leadership and also stated that “leadership determines how your chapter will function”.
In addition, there was a discussion on raising the GPA requirements for membership and
attendees were encouraged to donate $5 to the EAF funds.
Workshop 17 – Membership Models for Success: “This is It”
Presented by Soror Morgan Gaskin, Regional Membership Chairman
Soror Gaskin discussed the evaluations of the Undergraduate Chapters regarding the
Membership Intake Process. The following were the results:
• Improve undergraduate control and oversight
• Ensure that Graduate Advisors have a history with the Undergraduate Chapter
• Develop a less complicated Membership Intake Process
• Implement activities to encourage Undergraduates to transfer to graduate
membership
• Remind candidates that letters of recommendations must be typed
• Letters of acceptance should be distributed in hand by the Graduate Advisor,
only
• Membership Intake Process chairman must make sure application signatures are
signed to avoid rejection of candidacy by the Corporate Office
• Chapters should extend sisterly relations
During the 78th South Central Regional Conference, I attended all Plenary Sessions, the
Undergraduate Luncheon, EAF AKApollo, Public Luncheon, Regional Conference Awards
Banquet, Ivies Beyond the Wall Ceremony, Ecumenical Breakfast, and voted as a delegate.
Congratulations to Soror Gwendolyn J. Brinkley, who was re-elected as the South Central
Regional Director.

Presenter: Patricia Webb, So. Central Rep to the Standards Committee
Soror Patricia gave a wrap up from the standards committee. She reported that South Central has 100%
completion of the evaluation process before the deadline. She presented some of the challenges to
completing the chapter evaluations and what chapters can do to make future evaluations run smoothly.
The major concern for the standards committee going forward is how to evaluate chapter that have
foundations and protect the sorority from liability in chapter foundation activities. There is a halt to the
creation of any new foundations until a reasonable solution can be found.
The Non-Traditional Entrepreneur: The Basics of Business Ownership
Presenter: Andrea Bonner
Alpha Kappa Omega’s own Andrea Bonner presented an informative workshop from the perspective of a
successful NTE. Challenging sorors to “Take a Chance on a Dream” she discussed best practices for
anyone interested in starting their own business. Also, the sources for information and revenue for NTE.
In closing Soror Andrea encouraged attendees to use continuous market research, personal development
and educate themselves about their business.

Legacy/Leadership Breakfast
Opening Plenary Session
Second Plenary Session- The second plenary session began with the meditation by Soror Dorothy Buchanan Wilson. The session
proceeded with the Standards Report, given by Soror Patricia Webb (Omicron Mu Omega), South Central Regional Representative of
the International Standards Committee. She reported that South Central Region had 100% reporting compliance, 100% feedback,
100% enhancements, and in addition to 100% evaluation, south central region was the first region to finish all evaluations and
reevaluations. Soror Markita Grant of Nu Lambda Omega Chapter provided the Strategic Planning Report in a booklet handout
and we viewed Soror Barbara McKinzie’s State of the Sorority Report on a DVD. The International Committee Reports included
Constitution, Archives and Connection. It was announced to the body that Alpha Kappa Omega won first place in the National
Archives and South Central AKA Connection Awards. We will go on to represent the South Central Region at the 2010 Boulé. Soror
Rita Roberts of Alpha Kappa Omega and Teller’s Committee Chairman went over the Voting Procedures, and Soror Nicholette Lear
Jones (Pi Mu Chapter), South Central Regional Representative to the International Nominating Committee, introduced the
candidates. There were four candidates running for South Central Regional Representative to the International Nominating
Committee: Sorors Jackie Laverne Gorman Johnson, Dinette Anthony Reed, Katina M. Semien and Yasmin Barnes Toliver. Each
candidate gave a speech, and there were no questions for the Candidate’s Forum. Announcements were made and Soror Gwendolyn
J. Brinkley recessed the session until Saturday.

This workshop was very informative. Soror Doty used a PowerPoint presentation to cover the guidelines for conducting
rituals and ceremonies. Topics included the National Hymn, the Pledge, Chapter Chartering, Chapter Officer Instillation,
Rededication Ceremony (long form and short form), Initiation of New Members, Memorial Ceremony, Recognition Ceremony
for Diamond, Golden and Silver Sorors and the Greek Medley. The PowerPoint presentation can be found on the South

• WK 15 Protocol 102: Exemplary Sorority – Beyond the Basics- Presenter: Soror Francine Gilmer (Alpha Delta Omega)
International Protocol Chairman - Soror Gilmer covered a wealth of information demonstrating the importance of using
correct protocol when planning a local event. Topics included Program Arrangement, Dais and Reserved Seating Set-up and
Arrangement, Holding Room Preparation, Proper Introduction for Closed and Open Events and Meal Function, Gift and

The Logistics Conference Committee Meeting was led by Soror Pamela Lazard, Chairman (Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter) and Co‐Chairmen, Sorors Karen Baker (Xi Alpha Omega) and Clarissa Harris (Delta Lambda Omega). During this brief session, sorors on the Committee were asked to sign up on event sheets to offer logistics support at appointed times during the Conference. The Rules Conference Committee Meeting was led by Soror Loretta Branch, Chairman (Beta Phi Omega) and Co‐
Chairman, Soror Rosa Rush (Alpha Kappa Omega). Soror Loretta encouraged all sorors in attendance to read all 21 rules and the safety tips, listed in the Conference Agenda, pgs. 34‐36, to prepare for the presentation of the rules governing the conference on Friday, April 9th during the First Plenary Session. Third Plenary Session
The Third (Closing) Plenary Session began with the Graduate Advisors’ Certification Report, presented by Soror Ava Fisher, Chairman (Alpha Chi Omega Chapter). Soror Fisher reported that 220 sorors from across the Region were certified during the 2010 Regional Conference. ●The 2010‐2020 Strategic Planning Committee Report was written by Soror Beverly Ledbetter, Chairman and presented by Soror Mattelia B. Grays, 18th Supreme Basileus. Sorors were encouraged to review the Executive Summary/Survey and Opinionnaire Report extended to registered attendees during the session—which surveys our membership and leadership and takes a close examination of our sisterhood’s structure, operations and finance. ●The Regional Heritage Committee Report was given by Soror Linda Burkley (Xi Alpha Omega Chapter). Soror Linda shared that evaluations/investigations throughout the Region, including in the Far West and South Central regions, are being done to preserve and protect operations within respective Chapters. ●The International Finance Report (Enhancing Sound Financial Practices) was given by Soror Glenda Baskin Glover (Beta Delta Omega Chapter/Supreme Tamiouchos) . Information, including a definitive brochure , was passed out, detailing the 2011‐2013 proposed budgets for the general fund. The 2011‐
2013 Budget will be voted on at the 2010 Boule. ●Regional Finance Report was presented by Soror Patricia A. Roberts (Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter/Regional Tamiouchos). Soror Patricia reported that the Region is fiscally fit due to exceptional planning and attention to detail. A brochure detailing the Region’s Balance Sheet of total assets and total liabilities and capital, along with the Region’s Income Statement, was extended to each attendee. ●State of the Undergraduates Report was presented by Soror Melanie C. Jones (Second Supreme Anti‐
Basileus)—reporting that the state of the undergraduates is in great condition. Soror Melanie shared that the offices, “Second Supreme Anti‐Basileus” and “Undergraduate Member at Large” are open for election and encouraged undergraduate sorors interested in running for office to review, “I Want to Run for Office” manual. AKA Scholars with 3.0 and above GPAs, along with the Leadership Fellows, were recognized. ●EAF Report was presented by Soror Conchetta White Fulton (EAF Regional Coordinator). Soror Conchetta acknowledged the 30 Year Anniversary of the EAF and reminded sorors of the EAF mission: to promote and provide perpetual funding for lifelong learning. With the support of fun‐filled music and sisterly comraderie during her report, Soror Conchetta encouraged all sorors to donate to the EAF. ●Cluster Retreats Report was given by Soror Joya Hayes (Beta Psi Omega Chapter/ Southwest/Central Texas Cluster Coordinator), in which she shared upcoming dates and locations for the upcoming 2010 Cluster Retreats: ¾Arkansas Cluster Retreat (October 2/Little Rock, Arkansas) ¾Southwest/Central Texas Cluster Retreat (October 16/San Antonio, Texas) ¾Southeast Texas Cluster Retreat (October 23/Spring, Texas) ¾West Texas/New Mexico Cluster Retreat (October 30/Midland, Texas) ¾Northeast Texas Cluster Retreat (October 9/Wichita Falls, Texas) ¾North Louisiana Cluster Retreat (November 13/Monroe, Louisiana)) ¾Southern Louisiana Cluster Retreat (December 11/Baton Rouge, Louisiana) The 2010 Undergraduate Cluster Coordinators Report was given by Soror Ruby Bible. Soror Ruby recognized all Undergraduate Cluster Coordinators and shared the following 2010 Undergraduate Round Up schedule: 2010 Undergraduate Round Up (August 27‐29/Austin, Texas) ●Evaluation Report was given by Soror Valandra L. German, Chairman (Delta Omega Omega Chapter). Soror Valandra reported that the 2010 Regional Conference Evaluation would be distributed via email by Sunday, April 11, 2010. Sorors could also pick up hard‐copy evaluation forms in the Regional Conference Office, but would have to submit completed forms into the Office by noon on Sunday, April 11th. ●Philactor Report was presented by Soror Helen Houston, Chairman (Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter). $426 was collected in late fees from sorors who had been untimely in reporting to plenary sessions. ●Recommendations Report was presented by Soror Mary Doucet, Chairman (Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter). Soror Mary reported that there were no recommendations. ●Registration Report was given by Soror Ramona Waller, Chairman (Delta Lambda Omega Chapter): Total registered (in attendance): 2,362, to include 359 delegates. ●Resolutions Report was given by Soror Billye Burns, Chairman (Omicron Iota Omega Chapter). Soror Gwendolyn J. Brinkley, South Central Regional Director, will be recommended for ratification at the 2010 Boule. International Nominating Committee South Central Representative: Votes cast, 361; Soror J. Gorman Johnson (40); Soror Danette Reed (46); Soror Katina Simien (264); Soror Yasmin Tolliver (11). Soror Katina Simien will be ratified at the 2010 Boule. ●Announcements Report was presented by Soror Willie Mae Evans (Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter). 2011 South Central Regional Conference Invitational was presented by the West Texas/NM Cluster. Workshop 06 – Constitution ESP/Saturday, April 10, 2010 – 8:30am Presenters, Soror Dorothy Buchanan Wilson, Upsilon Mu Omega Chapter/Supreme Grammateus; Soror Candence Williams, Eta Upsilon Chapter; Convenor, Soror Margie Taylor, Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter; Recorder, Soror Rossana Deadrick‐Farris, Chi Omicron Omega Chapter ●Parliamentary Law/The Laws of the Meeting and its various components were discussed. The seven essentials of a “motion” were shared and discussed: (1) what is its purpose; (2) when is it in order; (3) when does it require a second; (4) when is it debatable; (5) when is it amendable; (6) when is a vote required for adoption; and (7) when can it be reconsidered. “Laying the Tracks for Conducting a Meeting” was also shared and discussed among workshop attendees. The Parliamentary Motions Guide can be found on the Constitution Committee link on the AKA website. Workshop 14 – Simply the Best: Excellence in Strategic Preservation/April 10, 2010 – 10:15am Presenter, Soror Pamiel Gaskin, Mu Kappa Omega Chapter/Regional Archives Chairman; Convenor, Soror A. Denise Graves, General Member; Recorder, Soror Susan Bynam, Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter ●Soror Pamiel did an excellent job in detailing the importance of Chapters preserving the history of Alpha Kappa Alpha—our gift to the future. Recommendations: (1) Archives Committee should be standing committee in Chapter Bylaws; (2) must have a “Chapter approved” mission statement; (3) must have a Chapter representative at regional and national workshops; (4) must have a Chapter profile; (5) Chapters must be actively engaged in preservation efforts; (6) maintain a current inventory of collections; (7) maintain an Archives Chapter Abstract; (8) store Chapter records in a climate‐

Diamond, Golden & Silver Star Breakfast
The breakfast started with a parade of stars celebrating silver, golden, & diamond status in the sorority.
All honorees had either silver or gold crowns. Alpha Kappa Omega had the only diamond Soror Mary
J.Collins who was initiated in Pi Chapter 1935. Soror Mary shared with us the name of the hymn
“Pushing the Clouds” which changed during her junior year to “Through the years”. Soror Doris L.
JeGean celebrated her Golden anniversary, and there were six silver stars in attendance... The induction
ceremony was conducted by Soror Barbara A. McKinzie our Supreme Basileus, assisted by Soror Melba
J. Henry, Chairman of the committee. Several musical selections were sung and a slide show presentation
of the sorors was presented. Finally, Soror Gwendolyn J. Brinkley, 23rd South Central Regional Director
gave closing remarks after Soror Mary Collins told us what this moment met to her. This was a
wonderfully planned executed regional event and I enjoyed celebrating my Silver Star status as a
delegate.
Membership Report
The workshop was presented by Soror Morgan Gaskin, South Central Regional Representative, and
International Membership Committee. During the workshop, Morgan went over the revised process and
spoke extensively regarding the background check with the corporate office at the expense of the
interested member. There were a plethora of questions regarding the revised membership process which
is all included in the new MIP manual. Morgan was very detailed, but there were many questions and
concerns regarding the revised process.
Boule luncheon & Hospitality
The luncheon will be chaired by Soror Agnes Fisher, Co-Chairman is our very own Soror Elnora
Flewellen. The theme is “Gateway to Electrifying Sensational Pearls with all that Jazz” Each graduate
chapter is asked to give $300, and undergraduates chapter are asked to give $350. The colors are pink
and black. The hospitality suite will be open July 11-July 15.
Protocol Beyond the Basics
International Membership Chairman, Soror Francene Gilmer, Alpha Delta Omega Chapter, facilitated the
Protocol Workshop. She did an outstanding job. Topics of discussion were Soror Code of Ethics, The
Role of the chapter Protocol Committee, Attire – White, Black, Pink and/or Green, Showing Respect and
Appreciation for Our Leaders, and seating Members of the Dias – from the podium correctly during
business meetings and events. Big flowers on the dias are discouraged. She also told us that we should
budget at least $500 for key note speakers.
Key Highlights – Utilitizing protocol committee for all chapter events prior to and during all events.
Sorors were asked to purchase a protocol manual at $10.

The 78th South Central Regional Conference was held August 8-11, 2010 at the Hilton Hotel and
Convention Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. The theme was:
Extraordinary Sisterhood with Preeminence … Embracing the Next 100 Years.
As the PRIM AND PROPER LADIES OF ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA – PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE attended the
Legacy/Leadership Breakfast, Legacy, Soror Karen Graves introduced her mother, Soror Mattelia B.
Graves, 18th Supreme Basileus, as the keynote speaker. In recognizing the value of family, Soror
Matellia stated, “An AKA Legacy begins at birth, and there is no greater thrill than seeing your Legacy
become an Alpha Kappa Woman.” An array of beautiful hats adjourned the heads of many Soror, along
with matching outfits, as they were given a pink rose and graciously walked the pink carpet. Soror
Barbara A. McKinzie , Supreme Basileus, was presented a 24 karat gold crystal rose. Sorors recited the
Legacy Creed and the program culminated with closing remarks by Soror Gwendolyn Brinkley, South
Central Regional Director.
I attended the workshop titled Standards: Excellence after the Evaluation. Soror Patricia Webb,
Regional Standards Committee Chairman, reviewed the established criteria for ensuring the perpetuity
of our sisterhood. Her discussion of top issues within chapters entailed: Financial Problems, Audits,
Bonding, Graduate/ Undergraduate Relationships, and Foundations. She stressed the importance of
compliance and challenged Sorors to stay abreast of our operating documents.
In order to render effective and credible service, Soror Bernice E. Ripley, International Economic
Leadership Chairman, led the presentation on THE CODE OF CONDUCT FOR DIRECTORATE/BOARD
MEMBERS. She discussed specific responsibilities found in the Manual of Standard Procedure, pages 7475.
In addition, other sessions that I attended were informative, entertaining, inspirational, and reflective.
They included: Plenary Sessions, AKApollo, Rededication, and The Ivies Beyond the Wall Ceremony.
Soror Hazel Hainsworth Young was lovingly remembered.
It was my pleasure to serve as a delegate to the 78th South Central Regional Conference. Thank you for

Dear Sorors of Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter:
Thank you for the privilege of serving as a delegate to the 78th South Central Regional Conference.
My report is as follows:
Conference Committee Meeting: Philactor Chairman, Soror Helen Houston, of Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter
began the meeting with an introduction of her co-chairman and all attending sorors. Soror Houston reminded us
of the overall purpose of this committee. It is to ensure that the doors of the house of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority be securely guarded. Duties are to greet sorors at the door; be friendly; when late, ask for the password
and $1.00; be at your assigned doors at least one hour ahead of scheduled meeting or occurrence; be aware that
children or visitors are not allowed and sorors should be properly dressed for all occasions. A discussion with
questions and answers finalized the workshop. Soror Helen Houston reported the collection of $439.00 in finds
which will be donated to the Gwendolyn J. Brinkley EAF Endowment Scholarship Fund.
WK-06-Constitution ESP: Presenter, Soror Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson of Upsilon Mu Omega Chapter and CoPresenter, Soror Candence Williams of Kappa Nu Omega Chapter. Margie Taylor of Alpha Kappa Omega served
as the Convener of this workshop. Each soror received a handout which is provided by the International
Constitution Committee for this Regional Conference Workshop. It contained 18 detailed Bylaw Tips, 13
Parliamentary Terms, and a Glossary with definitions of terms related to the words as they are used in the
Constitution and Bylaws and Manual of Standard Procedures of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. A video was
used in her presentation which provided facts information and documents that ensured a proficient knowledge of
parliamentary procedures. A discussion with questions and answers finalized this workshop.
WK-20 Communication: Every Source Penetrated: Presenter was Soror Jackie Robinson, Omicron Mu
Omega Chapter and Convener was Soror Joya Hayes, Beta Psi Omega Chapter. Soror Robinson gave the Goals
and Objectives of Communications. They are: to position Alpha Kappa Alpha as the powerful global organization
it is and to seal its reputation as a power player on the global landscape heightens Alpha Kappa Alpha’s media
visibility, strengthen its media ties, communicate Alpha Kappa Alpha’s message, empower its members and
connect to its member worldwide. Tips to help chapters are: know the local media, know contacts at the media,
compose letter of introduction, identify opportunities for chapter visibility, get background on topic prior to
releasing information to media, choose an appropriate spokesperson (with the Basileus’ input) and use calendar
announcements as free advertisement of events. A video was used in her presentation. It provided facts, and other
helpful suggestions.
Additional Conference Assignment: Ivies Beyond the Wall Ceremony: Our beloved Soror Hazel Hainsworth
Young was Alpha Kappa Omega’s only Ivy Beyond the Wall at this 78th South Central Regional Conference. It
was extremely heart warming to see how many devoted sorors from Alpha Kappa Omega Chapter were present at
this ceremony. We all stood when her name was called.

My reporting assignments included the following:
EAF AKApollo
Before Exuberantly Spirited audience Participants, five undergraduate teams and 2 graduate groups
wowed the crowd. Along with the undergraduate and graduate teams, AKApollo goers were entertained
by Mosley’s Movement. Although all of the performances were entertaining, 1st and 2nd place
undergraduate winners were: Beta Psi and Epsilon Phi respectively while 1st and 2nd place graduate
winners were: Xi Alpha Omega and Chi Omicron Omega.
Workshop 05: Regional Accounting Procedures Overview
Alpha Kappa Omega’s own, Soror Patricia Roberts, Regional Tamiouchos, led this workshop and shared
with workshop attendees the roles and responsibilities of the Regional Tamiouchos along with
expectations of chapters hosting cluster retreats and regional conferences. Workshop highlights included
but were not limited to: for cluster retreats and regional conferences instead of all funds collected going
to the Regional Pecunious Grammateus, a local Pecunious Grammateus is appointed and she in turn
works with the Regional Tamiouchos; each month the Regional Tamiouchos does monthly reconciliations
for the regional accounts and submits the reconciliations to the Regional Accountant in the corporate
office; and checks greater than $10,000 require a second signature from the Executive Director.
Payments less than $10,000 require only the Regional Director’s approval (the Regional Tamiouchos does
not sign checks).
Workshop 16: Parliamentary Procedures
In Parliamentary Procedures led by Soror Freddie Groomes-McLendon, Supreme Parliamentarian,
workshop attendees were reminded of: how to make motions, the basic rules of voting and debate; and the
Do’s and Don’ts of conducting effective meetings.

2010 Graduate Advisor of the Year
Soror, the spring 2010 semester was successful and full of excitement for the
Gamma Psi Chapter! The Sorors presented Extraordinary Special Programs based
on our ESP platforms and performed numerous hours of community service. The
Gamma Psi Chapter has completed their finals and the semester has ended on a
positive note. The sorors that live in Houston will meet during the summer months
to prepare for their fall program targets. We ask for God’s blessings as the other
chapter members travel to their individual destinations to spend the summer with
their families.
