01 PROFILE
Structural understanding, material
knowledge and logic are fundamental
in the planning and construction of
buildings as well as special load bearing
and wide span structures.
Of greatest importance is the engineer’s
personal experience and personality
which completes the architectural
design and gives it a particular
expression. Architecture, all kinds of
technical buildings and even large scale
works of art will – in the most ideal
of circumstances - benefit from this
specific engineering perspective. The
engineer’s participation in the design
process influences the functional as
well as aesthetical performance.

Tensegrity stands for tension and
integrity, totality and cohesion in an
experimental sculpture.
Patrick Teuffel designed the world’s first
structure of load bearing glass tubes.
This configuration of apparent weightlessness became his first independent
project.
The building’s compact and reduced
architectural language is also reflected
in the fully integrated engineering
design. It is a fine example where
architecture and engineering meet on
the same level – functionally and
stylistically. These qualities have been
widely recognized and as a result ESTA
has been awarded with a distinction at
the German Steel Construction Award
2008.
Investigation and discovery: The visitors
of this walk-in exhibition pavilion
enter the world of integrated
systems - a world where the skin
and the structure of a building adapt
through chemical as well as physical
modifications to the changing
environment. The temperature,
transparency and colour change
constantly.

Curiosity and individual thirst for knowledge define Patrick Teuffel’s professional development. Prior to the
foundation of his own practice he
spent many years abroad, for example,
with Arup, the international firm of
Consulting Engineers in London. There
he worked in a special engineering
department, the Advanced Geometry
Unit (AGU) where he engaged in the
direct exchange with architects, clients
and other consultants. The creation of
form and form-finding in engineering
structures became one of his

specialities. With the help of parametric
design methodologies all different kinds
of building structures can be optimized
by, for example, saving weight or
indeed by cost reduction. The applied
geometrical systems are based on
mathematical algorithms and other
scientific methods – they are the
highest form of engineering induced
innovation. From this moment on in
Patrick Teuffel’s career research and
teaching in combination with real
construction projects determined his
further professional life. As a research
fellow at the Institute for Lightweight
Structures and Conceptual Design (University of Stuttgart) he was awarded his
doctorate by Professor Werner Sobek.
Later Patrick Teuffel was engaged at
the University of Stuttgart, the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design,
the Berlage Institute Rotterdam, the
University of Leeds and the Southern
Californian Institute of Architecture. In
2008 he was appointed as
Professor for Architectural Engineering
at the Technical University of Delft in
the Netherlands.

02 BUILDINGS
The design of buildings is the most
evident symbiosis of architectural vision
and engineering necessity. The one
does not work without the other.
However, a lot depends on the relationship, the combination and the harmony
of the disciplines during the conceptual
and detail design. Therein one finds the
potential which sometimes brings forth
the beautiful, the special or even the
exceptional.

Senden, Germany
The very functional and reduced design
appearance of this production and
administrative building has also been
designed from the engineering side as
extremely lean and efficient. In order
to achieve the utmost flexibility on the
production levels the ground floor was
planned as a two storey open plan
space with only four columns. On the
first floor large scale girders span from
floor to ceiling. Thus the open and seethrough steel skeleton guarantees the
utmost architectural transparency and
visual impact.
This inner-city housing complex consists
of three individual buildings linked by a
common underground parking garage.
It has been designed as a most energy
efficient “Passive Plus” building which
necessitated a close collaboration of
architects and engineers to achieve,
for example, thin slabs and an efficient
pattern of columns. From the structural
engineering point of view the energy
concept was further refined by the
flexible integration of the ventilation
ducts.

Reutlingen, Germany
A temporary exhibition and information
center for visitors has been designed in
the Abu Dhabi historical city.
The building consists of two
independent sections that are linked by
a bridge. According the local conditions
and the client’s special requests the
engineers specified a steel skeleton
in combination with steel composite
floors and piled foundations.
The reinforced concrete building is
characterized by its uncompromisingly
clear and cubic geometry.
The structural frame blends with the
architectural form in a unique way.
Thereby the interior is fully visible
through large scale glazing facing the
garden side.

03 MEMBRANES
In contemporary architecture membranes are being nicknamed the “fifth
material”. Large areas can easily and
quickly be covered by membranes with
minimal use of material. Equally they
provide excellent weather protection
and open up fantastic architectural
spaces. From an engineering point of
view membranes demand utmost skills
and experience from both architects
and engineers. The legendary roof of
the Munich Olympic Stadium in 1972
has become the hallmark of 20th
Century free-form architecture.
Since then membrane structures have
repeatedly hit the headlines as
spectacular architecture in the public
perception and design related circles.
Stadia for most of the Olympic Games,
Football World Cups and pavilions at
World EXPOs are outstanding
examples.

Cologne, Germany
The simple and lean elegance in
combination with a quick and easy
construction method is entirely due to
the choice of material. Here aesthetic
quality interacts almost effortlessly with
efficiency.
The morphology of the leaf-like
exhibition stand belies the complexity
of the structural calculations,
the difficult cutting pattern of the
membrane and the intricate design
details.
Every year during the summer months
at the beach of Noordwijk a temporary
culinary pavilion is being built.
The steel, timber and membrane
construction provides protection
against the sun, wind and rain but at
the same time opens up the
uncluttered view of the sea. The roof
is made of a two-layer membrane, the
upper layer tilts but is planar and the
lower one is curved.

INDUSTRIAL SHEDS
Dublin Bay, Ireland
In former times metal shed roofs
uniformly covered all kinds of industrial
buildings. Nowadays membrane roofs
can reach this goal quicker and more
economically. In this instance the benefit is not only one of cost and time but
an aesthetic one as well. The material’s
performance is heightened further by
its durability and the optimized
geometry which is a direct result of the
design process and of form finding.

MULTIPURPOSE HALL „GIERTSEN“
Bergen, Norway
The underlying structural concept
for this textile multipurpose hall is
the use of a double-layer membrane
which stretches across two mirrored
curvilinear girders. In this instance the
membrane combines more than one
purpose: Load bearing with the help of
the outer membrane, thermal
insulation by the use of glass wool,
maximum daylight penetration, a
high degree of pre-fabrication and a
fast assembly. The design can easily
be adapted to other uses than that of
sporting events.

Increasingly biomass is becoming a
relevant part in the mix of renewable
energies. Contrary to solar and wind
energy, biogas is constantly available
as it can be stored in special tanks and
containers. Therefore, the design and
the planning of the gas containers are
absolutely essential to secure the safety
and efficiency of this new alternative
means of energy supply.

All around the world photovoltaic
units are being installed not only on
roofs but some of the most economical plants are built to a size which
cover entire agricultural fields and
former industrial sites.
In that instance it is vital to design
cost effective and durable frames for
the photovoltaic modules. In order to
guarantee best performance at any
time and in any weather all year round
a quick and easy assembly as well as a
cheap maintenance and cleaning are
paramount.

Renewable energy, energy efficiency,
thermal insulation, solar energy or
sustainability have become international buzz words in the building
world. Nowadays no building project
can really get away without any
concrete steps towards the reduction of
CO2 emissions. Structural engineering
as well has to come up with detailed

efficiency of buildings. Structural
engineers take great influence on the
economy of supporting structures and
the reduction of materials, steps which
all lead to a significant cut of CO2
emissions.

LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURES:
OPTIMIZATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF DESIGN TOOLS
High volume and serial production of
any kind of structural lightweight
systems leads to the development of
new aluminium profiles. New profiles
with specific geometric abilities for the
use of connections, clips and other

means of fixings - whether to the
ground or at joints - have to be
conceived and designed in a particularly
efficient manner. Special design tools
enable an optimization of the
structures.
Already during the engineer’s design
phase a special CFD (Computational
Fluid Dynamics) software provides the
numeric simulation of wind forces on
buildings and other forms of
structures. Particularly in connection
with the design of free-standing
photovoltaic plants wind simulations
are of the highest importance. Various
alternatives in the design can easily be
modelled, analysed and evaluated very
quickly.

Special structures can be any kind of
building or even works of art which
are exposed to extreme functional use
and forces. From an engineering point
of view special constructions often
pose a real challenge. The engineer
has to have, apart from great technical
skills, a high degree of empathy for
architectural and artistic thoughts and
motivations.

„POLY STELLA“ SCULPTURE
Tokyo, Japan
CONTAINER HOTEL „SUITE4YOU“
The polyhedron is a representative
model of organically grown forms of
organisation in nature. The stainless
steel sculpture, made of Alucobond
and steel with a diameter of 3.5 m,
was erected in a public square in Tokyo.
Its structural complexity represents at
the same time an abstract impression
of the evolutionary process as well as
an insight into the significant demands
on the construction.
The construction is literally a perfect
hybrid between a product and an art
object fully in tune with the demands of
our age: ecological, pragmatic,
stylish but also extremely individual!
This is the impression given by a
standard shipping container that has
been converted into a hotel room. Like
a container “suite4you” can be shipped
and stacked accordingly. With the help
of a window- and façade manufacturer
and the assistance from a climate design
practice the fitted space-module has
been subjected to thorough
structural design checks before it was
sent off and presented at various trade
fairs.

The small pavilion in Vaduz has aptly
been described as a “sky full of 158
banners”. By video it transmits images
and impressions from the EXPO 2010 in
Shanghai. For this purpose the already
existing information center has been
encircled by an 11 m tall spaceframe of
14 m x 14 m. Five steel columns carry a
circular girder beam.The membrane roof
covers the steel cube at the same level
of the girder beams.

The bridge was designed by the Arup
engineer Cecil Balmond.

the Advanced Geometry Unit (AGU) at
the Arup offices in London.
Two contrary spirals form a structure
with extraordinary spatial qualities. The
46 m long footbridge for pedestrians
and cyclists consists of a geometricalstructural fabric made of six different
straps which unfold in the surrounding
landscape.

Patrick Teuffel’s professional vita has
had at all times a significant part of
elementary research and investigations
into structural engineering.
The continuous analysis, but also the
visionary questioning of future possibilities, allows him to enter new grounds
of engineering. Through lectures and
his teaching at several Universities
Patrick Teuffel is in constant exchange
between theory and real project work.
The aim of the chair of “Architectural
Engineering” is to foster the interdisciplinary cooperation and research of
design processes. Architecture is
perceived as an integral part of
advanced technical solutions. In close
collaboration with industrial partners
the chair investigates in a variety
of research projects the use of new
materials or the implication of soft and
hardware tools during the design and
construction phases.

SMART MATERIALS
In nature adaptive systems are very
common, for example, one only has to
think of the chameleon.
In material sciences, too, current
developments strive towards the
invention of adaptive materials, socalled smart materials. They can vary
their physical and chemical configurations and with regard to load
bearing structures, such as high rise or
bridges, they enable greater heights
and spans.
The Experimental House IN4M is
positioned at the crossroads of
sociological and technical innovation by
the use of new and high tech materials
and planning methodologies.
In combination with ecological timber
products and recycled products from

Future. The Smart Energy Glass, for
instance, is based on a liquid crystal
technology and can be switched to
