The Importance of Healthy Sleep
Nearly everyone occasionally suffers from a poor night of sleep. Individuals who are particularly
vulnerable include students, shift workers, travelers and those with acute stress, depression or chronic
pain. Sleep debt sufferers experience waking frequently throughout the night or too early in the
morning, take more than 30 minutes to fall asleep and feel lethargic during the day. Sleep is essential
for good health, proper mental and emotional functioning and ultimately our safety.
A National Sleep Foundation poll found that 60% of American adults experience sleep
problems. The result of insufficient sleep include reduced productivity and
concentration, impaired memory, stress and decreased learning and logical reasoning
abilities. Sleep debt is also linked to various illnesses and complications such as
diabetes, obesity and a weakened immune system. Sleep is one of the most

How the Winter Glare Can Harm Eyes
Did you know that snow reflects 80 percent of sunlight? That’s five times more than being on the
beach during the summer time! A mistake that some people often make is packing away their shades
with their summer goods. So before you swap out your swim gear for your winter coat, make sure
you keep your sunglasses handy; you will need them more than you think.

Hours of bright sunlight are highly harmful to your eyes. It can burn the surface of the eye which
causes photokeratitis, a temporary but painful condition. Wearing a wide-brimmed hat also cuts eye
exposure to UVB rays by 50 percent. Combining a hat and sunglasses reduces the risk of developing
age-related macular degeneration by up to 50 percent. Continue to wear a hat and sunglasses
throughout the day. UVB radiation is just as strong when the sun is at a high angle
around noon as it is during a low angle like 9am and 2pm.

Every day activities may be the cause
of underlying symptoms of pain.
Mid back pain is one of the most common complaints patients report when they
first visit a chiropractic office. The mid back area is highly reactive and can
compensate for the pelvis, lower back and cervical spine. The mid back is called
the “dorsal” or “thoracic” spine. Normally, there are twelve bones with a
matching twelve pairs of ribs that make up the mid back area. Sitting at a
computer or driving for long periods of time are two common every day
activities that may compromise the function of your mid back.
Some of the many symptoms associated with mid back pain include: muscle
tightness, spasms, restricted range of motion, sharp or stabbing pains from the
back radiating to the front and trigger points (areas of acute spasm and pain). Distortion of the back
can cause symptoms that mimic respiratory or cardiac problems. It can also be associated with a
referred pain or complication from one of the organ systems in the body such as the liver or kidney.

A corrective care plan will be designed to alleviate your symptoms and underlying conditions. Spinal
