Pre-registration
If you choose to pre-register, the information needed to
complete most of your paperwork can be provided by
phone.
Pre-registration allows time to discuss health benefits
with your insurance carrier and consider financial
arrangements. Some insurance companies require
pre-registration certification, so both you and your
physician’s office should contact your insurance carrier
regarding requirements prior to delivery. If you are not
covered by an insurance plan, financial counselors are
available to discuss payment options.
Your physician may request testing to be performed prior
to your admission to Madison Hospital. An appointment
is required for pre-testing. We have two locations for
your convenience:
Madison Hospital campus
Professional Office Building #1
Monday - Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

When it’s time to deliver your baby, please go to the
Registration Desk inside the Emergency Department
entrance. We encourage you to bring a supportive
partner to assist with the laboring process. You are
also welcome to invite professional labor-support
companions or doulas.
Our experienced, caring nurses are dedicated to helping
families carry out their birth plans.
Visiting information
Our Maternity Department is located
on the 2nd floor of the hospital. Guests
are welcome to share in your labor
experience at your discretion.
For your comfort and safety:
Spacious and homelike labor/delivery/
recovery (LDR) rooms are equipped with
state-of-the-art technology
All LDRs overlook our peaceful Healing
Garden
Families enjoy an abundance of personal
attention from our care team
Centralized monitoring equipment is
integrated into the LDR room design to
maintain the family’s safety and privacy
Large operating room is immediately
accessible for Cesarean section delivery
First hours are
golden
The bonding that takes place immediately after delivery
and during the first few days of your baby’s life is critical
for growth and development.
Closeness with your new baby is one of the best ways
for you to learn about your baby and begin the important
process of connecting with her or him.
Madison Hospital encourages...
Skin-to-skin time: As quickly as possible, new babies
are safely placed skin-to-skin on the mother’s chest. All
medical care is taken care of bedside while mom and
baby enjoy skin-to-skin contact. This natural method is
endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and
provides numerous physical and psychological benefits
for both mom and baby. Babies who are delivered by
Cesarean section or require immediate medical care will
be placed skin-to-skin as soon as possible.
Exclusive breastfeeding: Research has revealed
many important benefits for both moms and babies.
In addition to closeness, breastfeeding helps build
resistance to illness and infections. Mothers who choose
not to breastfeed will still be placed skin-to-skin with
their baby while feeding. Our staff assists new parents
in any way possible to ensure that their wishes are met.
Uninterrupted time together: We know new parents
want to introduce their new baby to family and friends
very soon after delivery. The bonding time immediately
after delivery is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and we
encourage you to celebrate with family and
friends only when you are ready.
Involvement with first bath:
While still in the delivery room,
parents can assist with baby’s
first bath.
Benefits of skin-to-skin contact
For babies:
More stable heart rates, temperatures and blood
sugars immediately after birth
Breastfeed sooner, longer and more easily
May cry less
Helps reduce pain and ease the transition from
the womb
For moms:
Helps with calmness and relaxation
Decreases anxiety and postpartum pain
Stimulates release of hormones that support
breastfeeding and mothering
Rest
assured
After your baby’s birth and your recovery, you will be
moved to a private room on our Mother/Baby Unit.
We know caring staff is focused on the comfort of
your entire family.
Rooming in: To promote bonding during the first
days, newborns and moms share a room. Your
support person may remain with you throughout your
stay, and we welcome your family and friends to visit
at your discretion.
Breastfeeding support: Although breastfeeding is
a natural process, our experienced nursing staff and
certified lactation consultants are invaluable resources.
They are specially-trained and available before, during
and after your stay to provide breastfeeding education
and personalized guidance. To speak with a Lactation
Consultant, please call (256) 265-5651.
Safety: All Madison Hospital employees wear unique
photo identification badges and color-coded uniforms
so you can easily recognize who they are. We also
use matching parent/baby identification bracelets
and an infant security system. We practice safe sleep
techniques and provide safe sleep education before
your baby is discharged.
Celebration meal: We treat you and one guest
to a special celebration meal before you go home.
Additional guests are welcome to order from our
Garden Café by phone to be delivered to your room
so they can share in this special time.
Physician notes: Both your physician and our
neonatologists will visit you and discuss your daily
progress and anticipated discharge plans. A summary
of your baby’s care will be given to you at discharge
to share with your pediatrician.
