RHS Chelsea Flower Show 22—30 May 2016 A garden celebrating
Katie’s Garden RHS Chelsea Flower Show 22—30 May 2016 A garden celebrating the life of Katie Wohlrab Oliver (1966—2001) intended to raise the profile and highlight the work of Katie’s Lymphoedema Fund (KLF) in support of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity Katie’s Lymphoedema Fund (KLF) What is Lymphoedema? Lymphoedema is swelling caused by a build-up of lymph fluid in the surface tissues of the body. After breast cancer treatment, this build-up may occur because of damage to the lymphatic system as a result of surgery and/or radiotherapy to the lymph nodes (glands) in the axilla (under the arm) and surrounding area. Occasionally it may be due to cancer cells in the lymph system. People who have had breast cancer can be affected by Lymphoedema. This may develop at any time after treatment or years later. Lymphoedema is a long-term condition, which means it can be controlled but will never completely go away. It’s not yet fully understood why some people develop this condition and others don’t. While it affects people in different ways, the most common symptom is swelling of the arm, sometimes including the hand and fingers on the affected side. Swelling can also affect the breast, chest, shoulder or the area behind the armpit. This can be painful, restrictive and emotionally distressing. Who are KLF? KLF was set up to support The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity in memory of Katie Wohlrab Oliver. She suffered from Lymphoedema following breast cancer and struggled to get treatment and relief from the condition due to a lack of trained practitioners within the NHS and a general lack of awareness within the medical profession. Alongside raising awareness of Lymphoedema, the Fund’s core purpose is to fund the training of NHS practitioners in the management and treatment of Lymphoedema, thus increasing the availability of therapists which even now, nearly 15 years since Katie died, is still extremely limited. The Fund provides sponsored places on training programmes run at The Royal Marsden School of Cancer Nursing and Rehabilitation in London and external training via Leduc UK in the Midlands. We hope to make this treatment more widely available on the NHS and we also think it is important to inform the public and increase awareness of the advantages of treatment. www.katieslymphoedemafund.co.uk How are we going to persuade RHS Chelsea 2016 to feature Katie’s Garden in their Artisan Category? The space will be a life-affirming, productive flower garden full of joy and positivity laid out with raised planting beds demonstrating how to grow flowers for cutting and arranging. The flower studio will house a sink, shelving, pots, dried seed-heads, gardening and floristry tools as well as a number of buckets and vases filled with seasonal cut flowers. The pink/burgundy planting palette reflects the colours of both the KLF and the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity logos. All the plants flower naturally during the third week of May. The garden will champion seasonal and locally grown British flowers and profile the work of small flower farmers who will be supplying us with cut flowers for the flower studio. The boundaries of the garden are formed from low hedges of Taxus baccata (yew). Its needles produce compounds known as taxanes and clippings of yew are collected annually from gardens around the UK. Taxanes are chemically extracted, purified and converted into the anti-cancer drugs paclitaxel (Taxol) and docetaxel (Taxotere) both effective in treating breast cancer. To date, artificial synthesis has proved elusive to science and the only source is from the unique chemical composition of the yew. The layout of the garden is based on a circular design representing the circle of life. Packets of seeds and young seedlings in pots represent rebirth. Two separate pathways dissect the garden: One leads to the flower studio, a place of activity and artisan creativity. The other to an old wooden door clad in ivy opening to an imagined, secret garden of peace and contemplation. A water rill covered with a decorative iron grille representing the lymph drainage system runs down the middle of each pathway. The main focal feature in the centre of the garden is a sculpture of a pair of hands - a vital component in the ongoing work of KLF. There will be clear vistas from all angles portraying all these elements.
