Dear God,
We give thanks for places of simplicity and peace.
Let us find such a place within ourselves.
We give thanks for places of refuge and beauty.
Let us find such a place within ourselves.
We give thanks for places of nature’s truth and freedom, of joy, inspiration and renewal,
places where all creatures may find acceptance and belonging.
Let us search for these places:
In the world, in ourselves and in others.
Let us restore them.
Let us strengthen and protect them and let us create them.
May we mend this outer world according to the truth of our inner life and may our souls be
shaped and nourished by nature’s eternal wisdom.
Amen

May we always remember to…Pray for one another.
Dear Parents and Friends of St Peter’s,
Last Sunday’s readings in our Parishes focussed on humility and simplicity.
These concepts are sometimes overlooked in our modern world where social media, television and
other forms of media give so much time and focus to ideals that are quite the opposite like, self –
centeredness, selfishness and the need to win at all costs.
It is a challenge for parents and schools alike to guide our young people on a road to service and care
for our neighbour, and indeed humility and simplicity, because of the influences they are sometimes
so tuned into in their lives. I have written previously about the idea that our young people benefit
tremendously from keeping life simple. Indeed one of the five Marist characteristics that we so often
refer to at St Peter’s is that of simplicity. The idea that our most fulfilling and life giving experiences
come from doing simple things well, focussing on the needs of others rather than just ourselves, and
eliminating from our lives that which complicates and put most simply, make life hard.
When a young person’s friendships are the source of anxiety and pressure there is a need to adjust
thinking about who their friends are, and whether or not they are enriched by their presence in their
life or they are dragged down by them. If students can’t focus on their work in class, or feel
comfortable with their peers in the playground, then there is a need to adjust who they spend time
with. If social lives are too complicated and rather than enhance lives, hamper our enjoyment of it,
then there is a need to rationalise what we do and who we allow to influence us.
There is no doubt that life can become very complicated if we let it be so. But if we focus on what is
important, the love and support of family and good friends, the example of Jesus and the service of
others, we are much happier people with an outward looking perspective and we are positive
contributors to our world.
The last two weeks at St Peter’s has continued the busy pattern that has existed throughout the Term
with incursions and excursions, debating, SRC trivia night, poetry, Science and Engineering Super
challenge success, NAIDOC presentation and of course plenty of learning and teaching, the core
business of our school.
Special mention to the Tournament of Minds team who were successful at Newcastle University in
the first round of competition. They will now compete in Sydney on Sunday 11 th September at State
level. Their success is a direct result of the dedication, tenacity and hard work of both students and
staff. Well done.
With best wishes to all of our St Peter’s families.
God Bless

STUDENT MATTERS
R U OK Day, which takes place on Thursday 8 September this year, provides an opportunity for us
to raise awareness, start conversations and transform the way we look out for people going through
tough times.
Most children and young people experience challenges and uncertainty as part of the growing up
process. These may relate to issues such as self-image, relationships, commercial pressures and
encountering various sources of stress. Youth support services such as the ones listed below can
assist in supporting students as they navigate their way through childhood and adolescence.
The following youth support services, may be helpful to young people:

Reminders:
All students are reminded to keep our toilet blocks clean and to show respect of these areas of the
school. Unfortunately a small number of boys of late have not been doing this and as a result have
left a clear message for their peers that they have little respect for our environment. Please discuss
with your child the health concerns that could occur if toilets are continually left un-hygienically and
the impact this will have on others.
Hair: if students wear their hair at collar length, it must be tied back at all times during the day.
Bus behaviour: It is a privilege for students to travel to school via bus. Please ensure your
son/daughter is aware of the appropriate behaviour, including language. Once again respect for
others on the bus needs to always be a focus.

CURRICULUM NEWS
A few weeks ago I was lucky enough to attend a one-day conference which looked at the power of
the brain and the impact it had on learning. Research over many years has allowed us to start to
understand the ‘workings’ of the brain and what control it has over all that we do – including study
and learning. While the day was quite intensive, a number of things stood out from the conference. A
couple of these items I discussed with students at our last school assembly.
Distraction is an issue we are all familiar with. Our lives are full of distractions and this is something
that is unavoidable. However, with a bit of knowledge and a few strategies it is possible to train
yourself to limit the impact of these distractions. The first thing is to acknowledge that attention is a
limited resource. As such, a quick break is recommended every 25 minutes when you are studying.
This ‘break’ may simply be standing up and stretching, going for a walk or having a snack. Working
in 25 minute ‘chunks’ allows for much better concentration.
Students were also advised that when they are studying they should only concentrate on four things
at a time. Any more than this will work against any ‘real’ learning. When we try to cram too much
information our brain is overwhelmed. Chunking information into four key areas will help the
information be retained by our brains much more easily. The brain has been compared to a
‘smartphone’. As we know, when we are using too many applications at the same time our phone
battery runs down very quickly. Our brain is exactly the same.
Finally, I discussed with the students the misconceived idea of multi-tasking. Many students, and
indeed adults, believe they are capable of doing many tasks simultaneously at a high level of
achievement. For our students this usually means using various forms of media, including social
media, while they are studying. Research has shown that our brains are really only wired to do one
thing at a time. While some may argue that they are capable of multi-tasking, research shows that
none of these activities are necessarily done well. Learning taking place is only at a superficial level.
Deep and sustained learning does not take place at this time. Any attempt to retain and later recall
information learnt at this time proves to be very difficult.
The workshop on the brain proved to be very informative. While there is much more to learn about
this vital organ, it is very beneficial to learning when we know our brain, how it works and how to
get the best out of it.

IMPORTANT
that your
Year level and
Tutor Group
details are up to
date in the
Qkr App.
Update Of Student Details
Next week sport choices will be emailed to families for Term 4. In preparation for this
can all families please do a fast check on their Qkr App to check that student details
for the Year level and Tutor Group number are correct. A number of families
haven’t updated these details from last year and this can cause some confusion when
rolls and permission notes are produced for supervising teachers for events and
sports. If you are unsure of your child’s Tutor Group check with your child as they are
in this group every morning at school. They will certainly know it!
Reminders
A number of things to be aware of that are coming up:

Year 10 Fee Clearances will start to be issued in the coming weeks.

Family Discount forms will be sent home for completion and return by 21 October – No form
returned – No discount! And we all want that discount!

Planned Giving Statements: Early in Term 4 we will be requesting families contact their Parish
office for a statement of planned giving for the financial year ending 30 June 2016 to offset the
DFSBL.

Outstanding school fees: A number of families have been contacted in relation to fee
arrears. Please settle promptly or make an appointment to make a mutually suitable payment
arrangement.

YEAR 7 NEWS
Term 3 is usually a busy time for Year 7.
We have just completed the latest round of immunisations, and assessments are underway in a
number of subject areas. Students should remember that there are a number of ways to get assistance
with tasks and class work – Maths and Science have lunchtime assistance and students are invited to
discuss areas in which they feel they may benefit from help with either Mr Dart or myself.
Uniform is generally good among Year 7 students but a few reminders may assist them. Hair is to
be tied back and out of eyes at all times. Students who consistently fail to follow this may find
themselves on a lunchtime detention. Students who elect to wear sports uniform on a non-practical
PDHPE day or who mix and match the sport/formal uniform may also find themselves placed on a
lunch detention.
Students at St Peter’s are directed to come straight to school and not go to the shops along High
Street or into the mall before school. If, for any reason, students need to stop they must have a note
signed by the parent/guardian and this note is to be given to me during Tutor Group on the day. Any
request for a regular stop should be made by collecting an application for a Mall Pass from Student
Services and returning it to Mrs Johnstone.
Mobile phones are to be turned off and out of sight while at St Peter’s. If you need to contact your
son/daughter during school hours please call our office and the message will be passed on through
Student Services.
Students are reminded that it is an expectation that they will have their devices fully charged at the
beginning of each day. There are no facilities at the school for charging the device. It is a
requirement that each student has their technology and workbooks with them every day. Students are
now able to access printing at school. An email was sent to students giving details and clear
instructions.
If a student feels unwell while at school they should report to Student Services and contact with
parents will be made by staff in Student Services. Thank you for your cooperation in this area.
Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns.

Year 10 Electronics
This year is the first time St Peter’s Electronics students have built Electric Vehicles. The students
have had to look at the competition requirements and buy the components to build two Electric
Vehicles (Bikes).
The competition has two categories. One is called the Hub Division and the other is the Chain
Division. The Hub competition requires the students to build an electric bike with a motor that is the
hub of the wheel. The students need to wire the hub, the battery the controller and take time to
ensure neatness of soldering and wire installation. The chain competition requires the students to
mount the electric motor so that it drives the chain to the rear sprockets. The set-up has to allow the
gear changing functions to work correctly.
The students had to work in teams and really loved the challenge. Last week the students raced the
two bikes and the Hub team won. Next year we try to build bikes that are lighter, faster and able to
get the most out of the battery energy.

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT NEWS
Coast to Country Rugby Union
Rugby Union has featured heavily this term with St Peter’s represented in both the Diocesan Rugby
7’s Gala and the Coast to Country Cup. The Diocesan 7’s took place at the end of July and is a
competition that matches all Catholic schools in the Maitland-Newcastle diocese. The Coast to
Country Cup is a 15 a side fixture open to all high schools in the Hunter region.
St Peter’s fielded Under 14 and Under 16 sides in both competitions and showcased the sporting
talents of players from Years 7 to 10.
The Under 16’s side was particularly successful, taking runner up at the Dio 7’s. The team
dominated their pool, winning all games convincingly. They played a wide and fast game, regularly
finding holes as they strained the defence. Another win in the semi-final against St Joseph’s placed
them against St Pius X who were also undefeated at that point. This was a close game and came
down to the wire. St Peter’s were in an attacking position and two point behind on the buzzer.
Unfortunately a try was not forthcoming. It was difficult to isolate any of the team as notable
performers as each one of the ten player squad made their mark. Well done.
While they did not win a game, the Under 14 side was equally impressive. The team was made up of
predominantly Under 13’s players and the day acted as a foundation for next year. The entire team
was unwavering in their effort and enthusiasm, nominating to play an additional unscheduled game.
Connor Fortune and Luke Lawrence, powerful players, rucked through the centre of the park while
the agility of Sam Jordan and the Procopis twins created many opportunities out wide.
A big thankyou to our volunteer referees on the day, David Barnes and Campbell Thompson.
At the Coast to Country Cup, the Under 14 side again had an eye on the future with a lot of Year 7
students playing against older boys. The side played 3 tough games throughout the day and showed a
good level of skill. The boys were committed and kept working hard in defence, while showing
some flair with the ball. The results of each game were very close and highlighted the effort the boys
put in throughout the day. We look forward to 2017 and expect this side to be one of the teams to
beat!
The Under 16 side was a large squad of players and rotated well throughout the day. All of the
results were very close and the boys won 3 of their 5 games, only losing by 1 try in the other
matches. The forwards were led by Jye Bieman-King and worked hard to retain the ball at the break
down, and laid a solid platform for the likes of Pat White, Liam Dalibozek and Dane Corben to play
some expansive rugby at times. William Peter scored the try of the day, showing skilful hands and in
impressive turn of pace to finish off a 60 metre effort. Fortunately, all of the Year 10 boys were able
to play their final game for St Peter’s together and finish the day with an impressive win.
“The boys played with a lot of ticker, we were up against it from the first game but we dug deep and
represented our school well.” Nick Neild
Thank you also to Scott Dalibozek for his assistance with coaching on the day.

Netball
The following boys represented St Peters
proudly and with great success at the Netball
NSW Cup – Stage 2 at Maitland. The boys
made huge improvements throughout the day
to beat an opposing team in the 3v4 playoff.
They had previously lost to this team by 16
in the rounds. The boys will not progress
onto the next round but deserve to be
congratulated on their sportsman ship and
skill level for the day.

Senior Team Years 9/10
This team went through the day in a stunning fashion, beating teams by a minimum of 8 goals per
game. The shooting end thrived, with fluent ball movement and accuracy under the post. An injury
to Katie Rodwell after the 3rd game saw Sarah Brouwer step into the GA role and dominate play. A
special mention to Tejay Southwell who took on a new role in GK and showed promising signs in
this area. The team lost only one game by one goal finishing in second position for the day.

Mrs Johns has nothing but positive things to say about this team who were able to adapt to a variety
of positions in an attempt to combat different opposition styles. They were enthusiastic and positive
during a tough day of competition and, although wins were hard to come by, the teams “never give
up” attitude was a pleasure to work with. Congratulations to all players on the improvements you
made as a team from Diocesan to Penrith. Well Done.

Diocesan Golf Championships
On Friday 19th August a strong contingent of our students participated in the Diocesan Golf day held
at the prestigious Newcastle Golf Course.
St Peter’s was well represented in both the Championship division (players with a GA Handicap)
participating in a 18 hole competition and the team event which was a 9 hole competition.
Jonah Beavis successfully defended his title from 2015 winning the 9/10 division and was the
overall winner for the day with Nett score – 72 (88 Gross). Prize was a year’s membership at the
Newcastle Course. Lachlan Sharnock won the 7/8 competition with a Nett score 78 (88 Gross).
Congratulations to both boys on their fantastic achievements.
In the Ambrose competition, two teams of St Peter’s students participated and while falling just
outside the winning scores, enjoyed a sunny day and developed their interest and skill level. Nick
Neild was the stand out talent in these groups and all boys represented our school to a high standard.
Congratulations go to all the boys for their sportsmanship and for showing respect for other golfers
and the course.

James Mate and Christine Jordan Shield
James Mate Shield
On the 1st of August, our Under 13 Football team went to Beryl Humble in Tenambit to compete in
the annual James Mate Shield competition. St. Peter’s is traditionally very strong in this gala day but
the team knew that they would need to be at their best to clinch the title. The day would consist of
three games against other schools from the Hunter Region: St. Joseph’s, Aberdeen, St. Catherine’s,
Singleton and St. Joseph’s, Lochinvar.
The opening game against St. Joseph’s, Aberdeen was evidence that it was going to be a tough day
for the St. Peter’s team. The team needed to adapt to the condensed format of the competition which
requires more direct play. Luckily, a late goal to Ben Clouten sealed a 1-0 victory for the team. In
the second game, against St. Catherine’s, the St. Peter’s boys demonstrated their quality by scoring
six goals. As usual, the performances were getting better as the day went on. These two victories
meant that the match against St. Joseph’s, Lochinvar, would be a ‘grand final’ of sorts.
Our St. Peter’s boys scored two early goals and once St. Joseph’s had a player sent off for a
professional foul, the team just needed to remain calm to ensure that they would finish the day on
top of the ladder. Two more late goals sealed the James Mate Shield for St. Peter’s boys team. Cocaptains Zach Butchard and Ezekiel Kent Duong lifted the trophy in front of an adoring crowd to cap
off another excellent day for football at St. Peter’s.

Christine Jordan Shield
On the same day as the James Mate Shield, our Under 13 Girls Football side also played in the
Christine Jordan Shield.
Our girls came together late but after a couple of lunchtime training runs they were ready to give of
their best in this gala day. After early wins against St Joseph’s, Aberdeen and St Catherine’s,
Singleton, it came down to their last game against the other undefeated side, St Joseph’s, Lochinvar.
We went into the game only needing a draw as our goal difference was superior but that was not
how the girls were thinking. The girls knocked the ball around really well getting into good goal
scoring positions and then converting quite a few of them. Then at the other end, defensively we
were strong and as per the whole day, didn’t concede a goal.
Well done girls. As a team you played well and you were ably led by Lucy and Taleah and coached
by Courtney Muddle and Grace Harvey.
