July-Aug Newsletter 2015
the J U L Y / A U G 2 0 1 5 Langley Main Street Association Newsletter WELCOME BACK INTERNS! We have Grace and Emily back! Grace Swanson and Emily Martin have returned as LMSA interns this year. Emily recently graduated from Oregon State with a degree in horticulture. We couldn’t ask for better help with gardening, watering and shuttle supervision! By my count there are 23 businesses that have opened, expanded or are due to open shortly within the last few years in the city. There is a new exercise studio and sustainable bakery in the old hardware store building at the top of Second Street. Whidbey Children's Theater and Island Dance have moved their operations to Langley and Island Shakespeare Festival has expanded its offerings. Half Moon Yoga and Island Pilates continue to expand their class offerings. There is a new used bookstore and gourmet food and wine shop in Langley Village. Mona's Chocolates did a beautiful job with their move across the street on 2nd. Whidbey Island Kayaking has a new owner and is expanding. Front Row Creative screen printing moved in on Anthes as did Michael Stadler's photography studio. Kalakala moved and expanded with an aesthetically gorgeous restaurant with lots of outdoor seating. Portico Restaurant just opened its doors to rave reviews and there is a food truck coming soon. The Commons completed a renovation and is our favorite spot for housemade vegan soups that are outstanding. Village Pizzeria's expansion to the view side of the First Street building is jam-packed at all hours. The Ott & Murphy cabaret expansion, Whidbey Island Soaps move down First Street, and our own retail shop edit has thrived since opening 6 months ago. There is a new sustainable clothing store going in where Joe's Island Music was before they moved to the Village. There is also a brewery and beer garden opening in the space where the new owners of that building continue to renovate the space and beautiful gardens outside. And finally, we just spoke to someone who is hoping to open their home furnishings store in the baby store that never was. These are all the recent changes off the top of my head (apologies to those inadvertently left out) that lead me to respectfully disagree with Mr. Neff's sentiment. This is all in addition to the merchants and businesses that have been in Langley for years, day in and day out through the slow seasons of the year, all because they believe in Langley. We talk to people every day from across the United States who are trying to figure out how to rearrange their lives so that they can live and work here. Long live Langley!
