In the 70s, concert tours by rock groups to the “Land of the Rising Sun” were full of eastern promise. While the Japanese could hardly wait to pounce on concert tickets by western
rock groups, those in the occident could hardly wait to get their hands on the live recordings “made in Japan”. Usually such products were readily available and fans happily carried
off legendary albums by Deep Purple, Cheap Trick or the Scorpions. But this was not so in
the case of Santana’s Lotus. European and American fans could only purchase the triple LP
as an import product at an astronomical price; in 1991 Columbia attempted to bring out a
reasonably priced replacement in the form of a double CD. At long last, Santana’s thrilling
solos and the amazingly subtle rhythm of his band found their way into people’s homes, but
the pathetic little folder in the CD case was a poor substitute for the extravagant artwork
of the giant-sized, 2m2 cover insert. The present album not only offers electrifying interpretations of the classics Black Magic Woman, Incident At Neshabur, and Samba Pa Ti, but
also has the original artwork. Surely there is no better reason to buy this unique recording?

Die Konzertreisen der bedeutenden Rock-Gruppen der 70er Jahre ins Land der aufgehenden Sonne waren mit großen Erwartungen verknüpft: Während sich das Inselvolk geradezu gierig auf die Live-Perfomance der westlichen Rocker stürzte, bibberte das westliche Publikum auf ein hochkarätiges Mitbringsel in Form eines Mitschnitts “made in Japan”. Meist
klappte die Versorgung reibungslos, und die Fans durften jene legendären Alben von Deep
Purple, Cheap Trick oder den Scorpions glücklich nach Hause tragen. Für Santanas Lotus jedoch galten andere Gesetze. Die europäischen und amerikanischen Fans konnten das LPDreierpaket nur als Import-Produkt zu Juwelierstarifen erwerben, bis Columbia mit einer
1991 vorgelegten Doppel-CD bezahlbaren Ersatz für das Original zu schaffen suchte. Immerhin hielten so Santanas packendes Solospiel im XXL-Format und der rhythmisch äußerst
subtil arbeitende Organismus seiner Band den lang ersehnten Einzug in die Hörstuben.
Doch die aufwändig gestaltete Artwork der gut zwei Quadratmeter großen Cover-Beilagen
konnte durch das zur Lächerlichkeit geschrumpfte Faltblättchen in der CD nicht annähernd
illustriert werden. Neben aufregend neuen Interpretationen solcher Klassiker wie Black
Magic Woman, Incident At Neshabur und Samba Pa Ti ein guter Grund mehr, sich endlich
das Original zu gönnen, zu dem es in diesem Fall wirklich keine Alternative gibt.
