Lindenwood Christian Church WEEKLY E-ANNOUNCEMENTS FOR FRIENDS AND FAMILY FEBRUARY 17, 2016 Lenten Fast - 40 Days of Decrease. What if you fasted from regrets, denial, and even fear? Would letting go of these things open your heart to receive more of God? This Lenten season you are invited to join us for a forty day fast of a different kind. Pick up your Lenten Fast Brochure today, located through-out the church. LENTEN PRACTICES Lent is the annual preparation for Easter, Resurrection Sunday (March 27). The season of Lent calls us to change our lives and to open our hearts. Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 13th and ends on Holy Saturday, March 30th. Lent has three traditional practices: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving (serving). Our giving requires that we would put others before ourselves and share with those in need. FEBRUARY Our Lectio Divina Class will start Wednesday night, February 24 at 6:30 pm in the Friendship Classroom, taught by Rev. Morgan Parks. We will have small group discussion based on Scriptures chosen by the group. We will begin with the third chapter of John so if you would like to get ahead....start with John 3. Call 901-458-8506 and register with Carol as space will be limited. Come and let's explore together. TIME FOR COOKIES AGAIN!! Sunday, February 28th The men’s Kairos prison ministry is in need of homemade cookies for their weekend ministry at the West Tennessee State Penitentiary. Lindenwood’s goal is 100 dozen cookies for this ministry. They are asking that we make only chocolate chip cookies. Please bring your cookies on Sunday morning, February 28th by 11:00 to the receptionist’s desk. Thank you for your time and service in this ministry! MELIORIST - Special Day - February 25 (CORRECTED DATE) Our adventure takes us to the slavery exhibit located in Collierville. We will leave Lindenwood at 9:30 am and have lunch at The Silver Caboose. No cost for admission. Please call Carol at 458-8506 to make reservations. FIT IN THE SPIRIT - join Pastor Law in a six-week session focused on getting fit: Body & Soul. We will meet on Wednesdays from 6:15-7:15 pm starting February 24. Pastor Law will lead the Bible study and we have professional trainers to lead us towards healthier habits for eating and exercising. The cost of each session is $10 and that covers healthy snacks and the trainers. Wear comfortable clothes to work out. Youth Continued on page 3... We are selling Grizzlies tickets for the February 24 game against the LA Lakers. The seats are located in Terrace II and we have a group rate of $35 a ticket. We will be allowed to High-Five Player Tunnel (30 ticket minimum) 30 members of your group line up along the players’ entryway to the court to high-five the entire Grizz team as they make their way to the court – this is available for both pre-game and halftime. The Meliorist will leave Lindenwood at 10:30 and will eat at the Waffle Shop at 11:00 am followed by the Lenten Service at noon. Cost of trip is $2 for transportation. CLASS 101 - DISCOVERING CHURCH MEMBERSHIP March 6, 12:15 pm, Bell Conference Room Perhaps you have been attending Lindenwood Christian Church and have been wondering what it means to be a Christian and what the church is all about. Perhaps you have been a member of the church for several months or several years but feel that there is much about being a Christian and a church member that you have yet to discover. Class 101 is the place you need to be. We will be looking at the following concepts: What does it mean to be a Christian? Why do we exist as a Church? What is our Statement of Faith Who are we trying to reach? What are the Five Circles of Commitment How Can I Develop as a Christian? How our Church is structured – how does it work? What is the Lindenwood Christian Church Family Commitment? AAUW-Memphis Presents: TrailBlazers: women on the Move, March 5, 2016, 10:30 am - 12:30 pm. Benjamin L. Hooks Library. Lindenwood is hosting an Easter Egg Hunt at Peabody Elementary on Saturday, March 19th at 12:00pm. There are over 400 students at this school so we need your help. We need plastic eggs and individually-wrapped candy as well as volunteers to help on the day of the event. Easter eggs and candy can be placed in the bin located in the Easterwood Gallery. Beginning with our first annual Community 5K, at 10 A.M. ON SATURDAY, APRIL 2, 2016, which will include runners and non-runners alike, and will feature a one mile and three mile non-timed run, to begin at Lindenwood and commence through Union Avenue, East Parkway, Poplar, Hollywood/Alicia, and Madison. We will also have a Post -Run Party with food, local bands, and activities for families to enjoy. On Sunday, April 3, 2016, we are inviting the Memphis community to join us for the historic installation of our first African-American female pastor. We wish to donate a significant portion of the participant fees to the benefactor for this event, the Mid-South Food Bank, to support their efforts to feed food insecure children, families, and seniors in thirty-one counties. The Lindenwood Sanctuary is open each Wednesday, 11:00 am - 1:00 pm for those who wish to come in and pray for our ministries, ministers and worship services. If you cannot come on Wednesdays, you can still participate by receiving the Prayer Guide. STEPHEN MINISTERS: Going through a tough time emotionally or spiritually? Struggling with a crisis in life, or simply feeling down? CHRISTCARE VISITORS are available to visit, call and send cards to members who are sick in the hospital, those in nursing homes, and for those who may be recuperating from an illness at home. Call the church office, 901-458-8506. Vacation Bible School starts June 20 and ends on June 23, Monday through Thursday 9 to 11 am. The theme for VBS is “CAVE QUEST”. Go spelunking through dark caves with Jesus as your light at Cave Quest VBS! Kids learn Jesus is the one who lights our way and gives us hope for each new day. His love illuminates when the path is dark. Cave Quest VBS encourages kids to follow Jesus where ever he will lead them. VBS is for ages K thru 5th grade. LIFERSIZERS - This is our sit and fit exercise group. They meet every Monday and Wednesday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am in the aerobics room. We stretch, lift weights, and work out our hearts at the same time. Every Monday from 9:00 am til 10:00 am Mary Beth Harlan teaches a great YOGA CLASS. No experience required! Cost of class is $5.00. The class meets in the aerobics room next to the weight room.
