ABUSE OF ADERALL RUNNING RAMPANT WITH TEENS
BY: SEAN BROWNING & IAN MARTIN
STAFF REPORTERS
The human brain can do amazing things, but what happens when the limits are
reached and misbehavior becomes a problem? “Smart drugs” seem to be the answer for
ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) and are being prescribed more and more
every year. Students now see theses substances, mainly Aderrall, to give them an edge
in their challenging academic classes. Many teachers and psychiatrists see these mind
altering drugs as an effective treatment for ADHD. This disorder causes people to not
pay attention, be disobedient, and not being able to stay still.
“Do a simple search on amphetamines and that will give you the answer to what
these medications can do, it was used back in the day as dietary pills,” said U.S. History
and AICE Psychology teacher Mrs. Herman.
Aderall is one of the many drugs that are prescribed by psychiatrists. The main
component of this medication is Amphetamines. For those who are unaware of what an
amphetamine is, it is the same chemical in the illegal drug “speed”. Amphetamines have
a high potential for abuse and can be toxic from prolonged usage. The chemical produces
dopamine in the neurotransmitters.
“If it works, it works,” said Nurse Nadine. “When you truly have ADHD, the
ephedimine in it will calm you down and make you focus. If you do not have ADHD, it
will make you speed, having the reverse affect.”
Young adolescents are said to be overprescribed medications after being
simply diagnosed with ADHD based on rating scales given by counselors and school
psychiatrists. The simple diagnosis allows students to take advantage of Aderall being
prescribed. According to Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, 13.2 percent of
boys are more likely than 5.6 percent of girls to ever be diagnosed with ADHD. Aderrall
is now being used ilegally by students as a drug to focus better.
“Posession of Aderal will be treated no differently than any other
drug,” said Dr. Viainds, “Anything drug related is ten days suspension.”
The long term effects though have not been fully explored by
scientists. Reasearchers state you should be safe in taking any medication.
Nurse Nadine explains that only those who truly need medication should
take it.
“If you need it, tell your parents that you can’t focus and go see
your doctor,” Nadine said.

this article.
When everything has been done, every new hangout spot is just
as boring as the old one, and every fun thing to do cost too much money,
what do you do? Many young people may turn to what society calls the
negative alternative and
start partying, but there
are a few kids out there
that still know how to
get out in the world and
come up with genuine
ways to create their
own kind of fun. Some
call it obnoxious, but
those who actually
go out of their way to
mess with people, call
it entertainment.

random things at strangers walking down the street. Of course when
messing with people there are certain boundaries that should not be
crossed. For example, people do not appreciate being touched when they
are doing their grocery shopping or feeling bullied by random outbursts
from strangers insulting them.
Moriah Rudisill, college student at SCF, is known for her unique
humor.
“Messing with people is funny because for some reason their
reactions just bring joy to my heart. That’s sorta mean. But I started
messing with people in middle school because there were so many kids to
mess with!” said Rudisill.
Moriah explained how she surprisingly used to be worse than she
is now.
When Moriah and her friends get bored, a better alternative is to
go to Wal-Mart and “poot” on people. Pooting is done with a little rubber
object that you squeeze in your hand to make realistic “gas passing” noises.
Most people would find this strange, but for Moriah, it is the norm and it
makes staying entertained easy.
“One of the funniest things was when I pootered on Black Friday
and almost got into two fist fights because of it. I didn’t know farting was
so offensive,” said Rudisill.
Jake Grimes, Palmetto high sophomore, also enjoys going
out with his friends and messing with strangers.
“It’s fun to aggravate people and test them because it’s exciting to
see how people react to getting messed with,” said Grimes.
Next weekend, instead of sitting around and being bored, do what
Moriah would do and bring joy to your heart by messing with random
people just to see their reactions.

FAREWELL CLASS OF 2013

It has been a privilege serving as your
Editor-in-Chief for the past two years.
The time has finally come where I
must say goodbye to what has been my

all thought it would be. I remember
people always told me that your four years would fly by and
soon I would be graduating and moving on in the world. At
the time I did not truly believe them, but now as graduation
draws closer and closer, I can see what they all meant. My
time at Palmetto almost seems like a blur and the last few
weeks of senior year will be gone in a blink of an eye for us.
After graduation, some of us will be moving far away
for college, myself included, and others will be staying close
to home to attend college. Which ever option you have chosen
for your next chapter of your life, go after it with all you have
and do not let the obstacles you face get in the way of achieving
your goals. Life after high school will be nothing like we have
ever experienced, but having the right people by your side and
educating yourself further; will make life just a little bit easier.
Every single one of us, has all come a long way
and should be proud of the achievements we have made
throughout our high school career. Some of us succeeded
with maintaining straights A’s all four years and others found
their successes in athletics making records at Palmetto.
Whatever your success and achievements were, be proud
of what you accomplished, and go into your next chapter
with the confidence that you will do well and succeed.
When we leave Palmetto High, we will have left our
mark for future seniors to live up too. Besides receiving our
high school diploma, the other thing we will have with us
for the rest of our lives is the memories we made. Whether
it was the football games, school dances, or participating
in school clubs, we will take those good memories with us.
I want to thank all of the teachers I had from freshman
year until now. Every single teacher I had, whether I had
you just for one year or multiple years, have all taught
myself and the other seniors life lessons that will help us
strive when we are on our own. Several of the teachers here
at Palmetto go beyond their level of expertise and will do
anything it takes to see their students find success and that
is just one of the many reasons why our senior class has
achieved so much. If it was not for each and every teacher
at Palmetto, our senior class would not be where it is today.
What ever you end up doing after high school, remember
you can find success in anything. The next chapter lies ahead
for us all and I know there is a great plan in store for all of us.
“Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid,
for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you;
I will hold on to you with My right hand.” Isaiah 41:10
couple of years our classmates have been a huge part of
our athletic achievements. This year the boy’s soccer team
soared as district champs all the way to the final four. Last
year the football team also dominated as district champs.
In all areas of athletics, the class of 2013 is there to thank.
We have made an impact on our teachers and on the
faculty, sure to not be forgotten. Likewise, I do not think
we will be able to forget some of the teachers and moments
we have gone through in the last four years. Playing intense
math games in Mrs. Bush’s class, Mr. Mullin’s trivia contests,
and Mrs. Wallace’s endless practice AP tests are just some
of the oddities that define my high school memories.
We have some truly intelligent and gifted people
in the class of 2013. Scholastically we have proven our
intelligence, and now we go out in the world to prove it
to all the rest. Show that tiger pride because from here on,
we will all be a part of the Palmetto High alumni. Go and
represent our school in the best way possible. We may be
“palmaghetto” to many, but now is our chance to turn that all
around. I know that you all are capable on things beyond your
imaginations; you just need to strive for your own success.
“May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed,” Psalm 20:4.
GOODBYE SENIOR CLASS
Eight issues created, over a dozen

all my final editorial. It seems surreal
that high school is about to finish its

as we cross the stage for graduation.
Then there were those of you I met in middle school. United in
sixth grade, and then separated between Lincoln and Buffalo
Creek. We rocked out in the band room and danced down
the hallways. There we created new friendships and began to
define ourselves. Finally, high school came around and the
changes became more drastic. New friends, new hobbies, just
“new” everywhere. But for these past four years we have
been one. As the class of 2013 we have established our legacy.
It might not seem our class has made a lasting impact
but we are indeed unique. We were the first class to go all
four years of high school with our current Principle Mr.
Clark, and Mr. Clark we thank you for that. For the past

A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON YOURSELF
BY: RACHEL WATSON
FEATURE EDITOR
As a teen, how other people perceive
you seems like the most important thing in
the world. Students strive to make friends and
assure that their “image” is a positive one. Some
people who did not have a good image in middle
school see high school as the perfect opportunity
to change that. Likewise, others undergo the
same change from freshmen year to senior year.
“I think people change their image
because of social media trends or because they
just aren’t happy or feel right with who they
were before,” said Senior Casey Edwards.
One student in particular has attracted
the attention of many people on campus for his
transformation. Up until the summer of junior
year, he was shy and mostly kept to himself.
Now, Seth Decoff now known as Redbone, is a
self proclaimed leader and outgoing individual.
“I’ve changed a lot throughout high
school, I used to be really quiet but now I see
myself as outgoing and funny. Personally, I
think people change because of things they
Pg. 3
go through or to be happier,” claimed Decoff.
Changes in a teen’s image may be for the
better, for the worse, or just plain confusing. An
example of a common image change is someone
going from “gangster” to “redneck”. Some people
go from being known as “wild” or a “partier”
to being a “good kid”. On the other hand, there
are cases where people change for the worse.
“It’s sad having to sit back and
watch as your closest friends spiral out of
control and you know there’s nothing you
can do to help,” said Senior Katryna Gwynn.
Katryna, like millions of other teens,
believes it to be unfortunate when people go
on a self destructive path. Laney Ruckstuhl
has some advice to give on the subject.
“You should never sacrifice your future
to be ‘cool’ in high school. Literally no one
will remember you in a few years and good
decisions will be more worthwhile than stupid,
attention-getting actions,” said Ruckstuhl.
Although most image changes are
harmless or even beneficial, it is always
important to not ruin your life over them.
Every school year ends with new
beginnings. New classes. At the end of the
year students receive the Red Book; the
curriculum guide at PHS. This book tells
you about all of the classes you can take
next year and prepares you for signing up for
classes. Some previous classes are discarded
while new ones are popped into place. This
year Palmetto has received six new classes.
Mrs.
Buzbee,
guidance
counselor,
said,
“We
are
gradually
changing our AP to AICE classes.”
AICE is a new program PHS
started two years ago. It is an equivalent
to the IB program at Southeast.
“It is a rigorous program of study offered
through the University of Cambridge in the
United Kingdom,” said the FAQ on AICE site.
All six of our new classes this year are
AICE or Pre-AICE, which prepares students
for AICE as a freshman or sophomore.
Starting the list of new classes is
AICE Thinking Skills. “The purpose of this
course involves the development of a range of
transferable thinking skills and processes,” states
the curriculum guide. It is a basic math class.
AICE Global Perspectives, “The
purpose of this course is to prepare
learners for positive engagement with our
rapidly changing world….reflection on
issues of global significance,” states the
curriculum guide. It is a news based class.
AICE Business Studies I and II, “This
course enables learners to understand and
appreciate the nature and scope of business, and
the role it plays on society,” states the curriculum
guide. This class will only happen if the guidance
counselors receive twenty interested students.
“This class is great for if you want
to major in business in college. It is one less
class you have to pay for,” said Sierra Bustle.
We are also getting Pre-AICE Spanish
II and Pre-AICE Math. In Spanish you
start with Spanish I, then go to Pre-AICE
I, to Pre-AICE II, then to AICE Spanish.
“Ideally Pre-AICE Spanish I would
replace Spanish I and they would add an
AICE Spanish Literature for after AICE
Spanish, but they have not done that yet,”
said Mrs. Urquiza, the AICE Spanish teacher
Pre-AICE math would be a way
to prepare students for the rigorous
AICE Math class that would come after.
New classes can be interesting or
tiring but it is all in the trying that you find
what you truly love. According to a Teens
and Career survey more than a third of teens
do not know what they want to do in life after
high school. New classes can help you find

NOT YOUR AVERAGE GAS STATION

STAFF REPOTER
Everyone has a fear of that
stereotypical creepy gas station. Thank goodness a new line
of gas stations, Wawa, is changing
that vibe. Founded in the Delaware
Valley, it became a huge success and
is now starting to expand across
the country. Along with decently
priced fuel, Wawa is getting on the
map for their gas station food. It
has a fresh deli, which is more than
other gas stations like Racetrac or
7-11 can offer. Sandwiches, wraps,
soups, breakfast, and fresh brewed
coffee attract customers from all over,
some of whom only go for the food.
“My favorites are the donuts
and milkshakes,” says Luke Myhree.
I t definitely is not your
typical gas station. Not only is their
food delicious but they also have
a nice, comfortable atmosphere.
With stations in only six states,
they designed their franchise to
have that warm fuzzy feeling.
“I love it. It is clean
and organized and I always feel
welcome,” says Erin Monaghan.
And now, they have a new
one on Gandy Boulevard in Pinellas
Park! So, next time you are low
on gas and craving some good
food, find the nearest Canadian

SHOULD IT BE LEGAL TO PRINT OUT OBJECTS?
BY: CHASE FORRESTER
STAFF REPORTER
2012 was a gruesome year in America;
One that saw violent massacres in fifteen
different states. The madness reached a climax on
December 14 in Newtown Connecticut. On that
winter morning, 20 year old Adam Lanza entered
Sandy Hook Elementary School and fatally
shot twenty children along with six adult staff
members. Lanza used a Bushmaster XM15-E25
assault rifle to assassinate the innocent people.
This mass shooting, along with several others,
sparked awareness regarding gun control in the
Whitehouse.
“America needs guns,” say Todd
Chastain, junior, “nothing
needs to be taken away
from us. Guns
don’t kill people,
people kill people.”
Now a days it’s much
harder to access firearms do
to new lawful restrictions. But
what if the average civilian could
manufacture their own gun at home?
With modern technology,
this is now possible
thanks to 3-dementional printing.
3D printing is the process in which
software is transferred from a computer to a
3D printer where virtually anything can be
made using the additive process: the layering
of different material (plastic, silicone, etc.) to
eventually form complex 3 dimensional shapes.
Although the price of this game-changing
machine is high, with time, companies will find
more feasible ways to build the printers giving
everybody realistic access to the innovative
device.
“People will take advantage of gun
printing. It could be dangerous if put into the
wrong hands,” Says Palmetto sophomore, Simon
Williams.
Already a small group of people in America
have utilized the printers to make gun parts like
magazines, triggers, and lower receivers. These
exclusive groups of people aren’t out hurt people
with their creations; they are only proving a
point that gun control laws are not the same as
they were in the 90’s in that making a gun legally
will be much more effortless for your average
US civilian than attempting to buy one illegally.
“Certain places need to restrict gun
possession of any type,” says Jeff Ansbro,
a member of the JROTC program.
Currently, there are no laws against
individuals manufacturing firearms for personal
use. This brings up some questions: Should 3D
printing be accessible for everybody? If so,
should the government restrict what people can
and cannot print? 3 dimensional printing is an
anticipated problem for the future. These
object printers
can

immense
amounts of innovation, but
the degree of violence that the
machines have the potential to
produce may out weigh the good.

RAPE:
NEW FEAR ON THE
RISE FOR WOMEN
BY: ADDIE PRATICO
EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Since the rise of the media and the growth of television, fear of rape
has sprouted in young women all across America. According to a study
from Yale University, raping of women is a crime that is constantly on
the rise in the United States. The Department of Justice and the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention conducted a study and found that one
in six women have experienced a completed rape or an attempted rape.
Crimevictimservices.org/ states that only 37% of rapes are reported and
there are 683,000 forcible rapes that occur each year in the country.
Palmetto High AICE Psychology teacher, Mrs. Herman said, “I do
not think women live in fear of rape, until they have been in that situation.
With the media though, it scares and puts that fear into women.”
Yale also states in their study, that women have been known to take
extra precautions and change their lifestyle due to this common fear. Some
of these precautions include avoiding walking alone at night, keeping
car doors locked, checking the back seat of the car when getting in, and
avoiding strangers when alone in public. Also, there are self-defense
classes, rape prevention courses, and rape crisis centers to help women
avoid rape all together.
“I believe young women can be rather naïve and trusting to those
around them since they trust their peers rather than the adults around them
at the time. They are going through that stage of development where they
get themselves into not so smart situations where they look back in a few
years and wonder why they made those choices.” said Mrs.Herman.
According to PBS who conducted a study on women, most women
do not realize that they are an everyday target for rapists. By being a woman,
you must always think about ways to keep yourself safe. Psychologists
have found that the majority of rapists blend in well with their own
communities and there are actually more similarities between rapists and
everyone else than there are differences. Every rapist is different, they all
have their own special way of luring their victim in, and women should be
knowledgeable on the various techniques rapists use in order to escape the
situation.
“I think women need to be more careful in general and it depends
on the person if they live in fear or not. Women definitely need to be more
careful about their personal safety than men do,” said clinical psychologist
Lara Embry.

CRISIS AT THE

BY: LAUREN BEDFORD

We are all aware that the Manatee County
School District misplaced money. A lot of it!
To save you from another cookie cutter story
about how disappointed we all are about the
mismanagement of our money and our schools,
I’m here to tell you how they are fixing it. And
yes, they are indeed, fixing it. A decision was
made to bring in Mr. Rick Mills as the new
superintendent. Mills is the former CEO of the
Minneapolis School District. He is a retired lieutenant colonel with
24 years of military service. I think I can speak for most people when
I say, “We are glad you are here Mr. Mills.” I have heard nothing
but pleasant whispers of his plans to right this capsized ship.
Maybe I am being a tiny bit too hard on the previous regime,
but come on; you’re really blaming everything on the software?
Did no one think it was a good idea to go back and check? Kids
in middle school learn to go back and proof read their own papers
because ‘spell check isn’t always right’ and ‘you can’t trust a

Our new superintendent has been working steadily to find
out how to correct so many wrongs, and rumor has it he is already
finding more money to make up for what was lost. The School
District had over 200 county cars that were unnecessary. Mills has
done away with these and saved the county around $800,000. He
is also looking to sell unused county owned land which will bring
in over a million. So again, happy to have you Mr. Mills! No doubt
it will be a long and difficult journey to recovery. According to the
2012 financial report, the district is $310,795,095 in debt. Yet I
have faith that somehow, we will get back on our feet. The county
is working to adopt a new budget. Still, there is no way to avoid
cuts in the budget, so prepare yourselves. For it is darkest before
the dawn.
Superintendent Mills will be hosting Soup with the Supe,
where we can get to know Mr. Mills while enjoying lunch. I will be
attending this and believe me, I am eager to meet him and hopefully
sink my teeth into the latest plans for the school district. (For live

We all have those moments
where we just want to scream “put
on some deodorant!” to that boy who
reeks of body odor. Sometimes you
might even think about bringing a
toothbrush and toothpaste to school
for that girl with the bad breath who
sits next to you in history. These are
only a few examples of some of the
hygiene horrors on campus. It can
be extremely frustrating when all
you want to do is drown yourself in
hand sanitizer and then trap yourself
in a clean bubble for the school day.
“There is never soap
in the bathrooms and it is
disgusting,” said Meghan Mathias.
Why is it that some people
on campus have such a lack of
hygiene? Many kids just do not
understand how unhealthy they
are and how they are negatively
affecting their body by not taking
care of their personal hygiene. By
brushing your teeth, you are not
only removing plaque and cavitycausing bacteria; but you are also
getting fresher breath. It is like
hitting two birds with one stone!
Hair and B.O are other issues. If your
hair is greasy and feels dirty, then
it probably is. The truth is, it is not
okay to go days without a shower.
“I feel that teens now aren’t
taking care of their hygiene and
that needs to change. They need
to do small steps to improve; like
putting socks on,” says Luis Castro.
Taking care of your body
should be a priority. Making sure
you take a shower everyday and
washing your clothes regularly can
really make a difference in your
appearance. If you see someone
with personal hygiene issues, do
not be scared to help them out. Like
Castro said, they need to do small
steps to improve. You can be the
one to encourage them to take that
first step. Maybe next time you are
next to someone with bad hygiene,
instead of spraying the room with
your heavy perfume, you could
sit down, talk about the problem,
and give them some advice.

HOW TO END THE VICIOUS CYCLE OF DEPRESSION
BY: MEGAN BERNHARDT
STAFF REPORTER
According to dictionary.com, stress is pressure or tension exerted
on a material object. Teenagers specifically have several sources of
stress. Growing up is not easy, and along with home life, friends, work,
relationships, and everything else that comes with being a teenager,
things can pile up. No matter how you deal with your stress, it does get
overwhelming sometimes and you can lose sight of your priorities. But
when everything seems to be going wrong and you find yourself wondering
if you can even make it through the day, a bigger problem may be at hand.
Depression is a mental illness that causes people to feel persistently
sad. Usually, it develops overtime and is almost always stress related.
It affects your thoughts, feelings, actions, and your overall health.
It can show symptoms like excessive guilt, difficulty concentrating,
memory loss, and rebellious behavior. It can even lead to suicide.
19.3% of high school students have seriously considered killing
themselves during an episode of depression, and about 20% of teens are
diagnosed with a depressive disorder before they even reach adulthood.
A student who wishes not to be named says, “Depression
really screwed things up for me. I used to love school, and now
I’m barely getting by in my classes. It has lead me to do things
that just make school that much harder. It’s a vicious cycle.”
One main source of stress for teens is school. Not only is school
just important in a teenager’s life, but it can be the deciding factor of your
future. It is one of the top stress causers among teenagers today. Some
kids thrive on it, while others must fight to stay afloat. Mild or severe,
the affects that depression can have on your school life can get serious.
Depression is caused by several things. Along with stress, it can be
triggered by a loss or death, any type of abuse, and major events,
even good ones. Life does not stop because you are having a bad day.
You are going to have positive and negative changes in your life,
and for some teens, it gets to be more than what they anticipated.
Melissa Zimbler, a student at PHS who has had her own struggle with depression
believes it is hard to focus especially when the motivation is gone. Zimbler
states that things can start to feel helpless; like you’ll never get any better.
“You have to put on a fake smile for everyone. But at home it’s kind of
the same thing. Everyone’s just trying to get in your business,” Zimbler said.
Out of the millions of teens suffering from depression, the fact is
that only about 20% receive treatment for it. Pretending that there is no
problem may seem like a good idea at the time, but it is only temporary.
There are ways to get help and cope with your depression. Counselors
are available at school, and they can help you to reach professionals
who deal with teen depression everyday. You just have to know that
when you feel like you are at your lowest, you can only get better.

GOING OUTSIDE CHURCH FOR AN OUTRAGEOUS “I DO”
BY: DAVIS FULGHUM
STAFF REPORTER
From 10,000 feet in the air to 10,000
leagues under the sea, people have been wed in
some extremely wacky places. When a traditional
church wedding just isn’t exciting for some, they
go to extremes to meet their standards.
A company by the name of Pro Dive International
specializes in extraordinary weddings. For only
$4,100, anyone can plan an underwater wedding
that can accommodate up to 60 people. This
attracts many adventurous couples.
“I would get married while scuba diving
because it is a whole other world underwater and
I wish I could live there. Everything is quiet
and unique, and having a special occasion like
getting married underwater would be a dream
come true.” Alex Strott said.
However, many Palmetto High students
are not up for such a high intensity feeling.
Tradition reigns over the adrenaline rush, Ashley
Olmstead just wants to get married where her
family has been married for decades.
“I would not do anything crazy because I
am traditional; I am getting married in a church.
Everyone in my family has been married in the
same church, and I want to live up to the family
tradition,” said Olmstead.
Meghan Carpenter feels the same way
about where she wants to get married, fun and
to the point.
“I do not want anything crazy or
spectacular, it doesn’t matter to me that much.
I just want a place where our families can be
together,” said Meghan Carpenter.
Despite the fact that marriage is far away
for many high school students, Kevin Beach
says he thinks about it every day.
“If I could get married anywhere in the
world, I would go to the Bahamas. The water
and the beaches would be an amazing place to
have the ceremony,” said Kevin.
Whether a traditional wedding in a church occurs
or an extreme wedding as you fall from the sky,
it is not about where you tie the knot, but with
whom.

#SELFIES HERE AND THERE AND EVERY WHERE
BY: HOLLIE JESSUP
COPY EDITOR
Almost everyone can say how they have
un-followed someone because of what seems
like the thousand selfies they post of themselves
a day on Instagram. If you do not know what
Instagram is, it is an app on smart phones that
almost every teen has that enables them to
capture and share pictures with their followers. It
is compared to other social media networks like
Facebook, Twitter, and even MySpace, where
many people have adopted the typical selfie,
which for many, has become sort of obnoxious.
Every one has different reasons for posting
their pictures, but Shane Gallagher is known
as the king of selfies for two simple reasons.
“I get one hundred plus likes, and
the girls love me,” said sophomore Shane.
Taking selfies is something that has
only been around for the last couple decades
and has gradually gotten even more popular
with the production of cell phones with front
cameras. There is even a day of the week where
people take a picture of themselves and post
it with a hashtag that says #selfiesunday. A
hashtag is used on Twitter and Instagram to tag
topics or words that will link to other pictures
and posts with the same hashtagged word.
Other popular hashtags for Instagram include
#mancrushmonday,
#transformationtuesday,
#womancrushwednesday,
and
#throwbackthursday. Selfie Sunday is the
day where you will see faces of your friends
popping up whether you want to see them or not.
“I post selfies but I don’t abuse
it. Some people act like they are snapchatting and not posting it on Instagram,

Today’s emerging generation has adopted
selfies as a way of giving off their first impression
to people lurking their profiles. Many times, a
person’s profile is the first thing someone is
exposed to before actually meeting that person.
“It’s annoying when people post
pictures of themselves because it’s always
the same people and faces clogging up your
newsfeed,” Said sophomore Kendall Vedder.
Some teens may think too many
selfies means that a person is conceited or self
absorbed, but in other cases it shows one’s
beauty and photogenic ability. Whether you
believe hashtags like #throwbackthursday or
#mancrushmonday are redundant, it is still a big

CAN THERE BE MORE THAN ONE JUSTIN?

Celebrities Justin Timberlake and Justin
Bieber are both very popular music artists of this
era. But how can one decide which Justin they
prefer? The answer lies in each artists’ career
paths and whose singles reach the top of the charts.
When Justin Timberlake brought sexy back, he
had no idea that he was going to have competition.
Timberlake got his start in the music world back
in the late nineties when he was the youngest
member and lead singer of the boy band ‘N
Sync. In 2002, when the boy band was reportedly
taking a break, Timberlake released his first
solo album Justified. This album was extremely
successful, exceeding seven million copies sold
worldwide. In 2004, Timberlake also performed
at the Super Bowl XXXVIII with Janet Jackson.
“I’m very thankful to be doing what I’m doing. I feel
very blessed,” said Justin Timberlake in a Tweet.
From 2007 until 2012, Timberlake focused
on his acting career, and was not expected to
produce more albums. He starred major roles in
the films Bad Teacher, The Social Network, and In
Time. This year, he surprised the world with his
newest album called The 20/20 Experience, with
singles “Suit & Tie”, which he performed at the
Grammy awards this year, and another hit single
called “Mirrors”. JT’s career has led him to four
Emmy’s, and six Grammys. This Justin also has a
fashion label know as William Rast, a record label
called Tennman Records, and two restaurants.
The other Justin, a young Canadian
discovered on YouTube in 2008, is much more
popular with the younger crowd. Rapper Usher,
who signed Bieber with his first album entitled,
My World which was the starting point for him,
coming out with his first single, “Baby” largely
influenced the star’s career. Justin has had
several other albums produced including five
number one albums, and multiple singles on the
radio. Justin released his Christmas album in
2011, which debuted as number one on the U.S.
Billboard 200 list. Bieber’s fan base expanded
as he was in a relationship with another teen star,
Selena Gomez. This relationship is said to have
had a large impact on Justin Bieber’s career.
Recently, Bieber has not had many singles,
but is working on a huge world tour in 2013.
However, the Biebs has had a couple of problems
with having a bad reputation. Bieber has had a
few scandals with partying and even drug use.
Luckily, his huge array of fans keep him grounded.
“I know who I am and I am very much
in control. I do not need to address every
speculation” .... “There is so much nonsense
that gets out there that is not true,” said
Bieber in an interview with Teen Vogue.
So which Justin will people consider to
be better? Some people find their styles of
music to be very different, with Timberlake’s
boy-band
background,
and
Bieber’s
tendency to include rapping in his music.
“Personally it is really hard to choose!
Their styles are very different. I think they
are both super talented, and I love to listen
to them from time to time. It just depends
on my mood.” said Hannah Taylor, a junior.
Both stars are talented enough to get
the public’s attention. Their styles of writing
popular music are different enough to
spark both negative and positive opinions
from their audience, but to decide which
Justin is better is truly up to the individual.
My Followers- You are
not allowed to hang out with me anymore,
because you only have one hundred and fifty
followers, and I am trying to reach three
thousand… It seems like this has become daily
dilemma for those stressing over their popularity
on a social network. More and more teens are
starting to become downright obsessed with
trying to rack up loyal followers. So much, that
now there is an app to assist you.
My Follower’s links up through your
Instagram and reveals accounts that are new
followers, that stopped following you, or who
never followed you back in the first place. It
keeps a log of who has blocked you and your top

It was just a few years ago that American
Idol was one of the most popular shows, but now,
people seem to have lost interest. If teenagers
do watch it, it is because of the cute guy or girl
on the show. While they still have great ratings,
the show has lost a lot of viewers due to lack of
interest as it has gotten older.
“I do not watch American Idol. I mean I
have heard of it, but I do not find it interesting,”
states junior Brianna Bronson.
It was not that long ago that American
Idol and other singing competitions were the
big thing, but now they are not. What made
people lose interest? Was it that the talent went
downhill? Because, rumor has it that the talent
this year is better than the past few years.
Even though less people are watching it,
their ratings have remained high. It is typically
seen as a family show because of the familyfriendly, harmless content of the show.
“My family watches it all the time. We
use it as family time to all sit down together and
relax,” states a student for Palmetto High school
who would like to remain anonymous.
What is it that made American Idol lose
so many viewers? Is it that the whole singing
competition aspect has gotten old? Or is it
something else?

“All Day I Dream
About Sports”, is one
of the most famous
catch phrases for sport
wear out there, forming
the name Adidas. I
think this company
has definitely helped
us out this year. The
jerseys we had were
the cleanest Palmetto
has seen in a long time.
Having a big name
sponsor definitely put
us above other schools.
I know other schools
like Bayshore and
Manatee do not have
big name sponsors for
their whole department
but it really is an honor
that Adidas would
want to pick us. Even
though our baseball
team did not move on
farther in the playoffs
this year, I am positive
that next year we
Varsity baseball
coach, Rich Glass also
has this to say about
Adidas, “I feel that the
Adidas
sponsorship
allows us to draw
kids to Palmetto High
School because kids
like apparel like Nike,
Under Armor, and
Adidas. It gives us
an advantage over
other high schools
like Manatee that
do not have a major
brand sponsor, which
in this day and age
is very important.
I think having an
Adidas
sponsorship
for the entire athletic
department is huge.”
I agree with Coach
Glass because it does
feel better to have a big
name sponsor. Either
way, next year our
team will make Adidas

KARATE KID:
EMPOWERED BY DISCIPLINE
BY: SEAN BROWNING
STAFF REPORTER
Most usual kids play football or join any
ordinary club after school, but a student here at
Palmetto High School spends his time teaching the art
of Tae Kwon Do. Sophomore Alec Stafford, or better
known as the Karate Kid is one of those out of the
ordinary kids who instead
of
involving
himself
in
clubs and regular sports he
makes a difference within
the community.
Stafford
helps train future Tae Kwon
Do students with his Sensei,
Greg Burgess, a retired
minister who taught him as a
young
Martial Arts student.
“When I first started I was not a very good kid at all,
Tae Kwon Do taught me discipline and put me back on the
right path.” Strafford said.
As a troubled kid before starting Tae Kwon Do he learned
discipline and the right path to choose. While achieving levels in Martial
Arts as a young kid Greg Burgess realized his leadership in the program
with the younger generations.
“Alec was about nine-years old when he came to us here at
The Planet Florida Martial Arts center, and I could tell he had a gift for
teaching,” Sensei Greg Burgess said.
“We knew if he learned discipline, he could make a big difference in kid’s
lives.”
Being a second degree black belt his main focus now is taking over
class for his sensei. He works at Virgil Mills and the Boys and Girls Club
in Palmetto. The program teaches kids self defense, discipline, respect and
also helps out with school work if needed.
“The best part of the program is guiding the kids to become better
and teach them self defense, respect, and focus,” Strafford said.
The Planet Florida Martial Arts Center holds classes for children seven
and up. Classes are held mainly at the Boys and Girls Club of Palmetto
at 7:30pm on Tuesday and 9:30am on Saturday mornings. The program
has monthly memberships for students and families that are looking for a
healthy recreational activity or interested in learning Tae Kwon Do. Be
sure to check out the motto that Alec Strafford exemplifies “Empowered

SPORTS INJURIES: ‘WALK IT OFF’
BY: NICK RAMSEY
SPORTS EDITOR
It is Friday night and you are playing under the lights. A stream
of sweat drips down your face as your heart pounds in your chest. You
are on the field playing the game that you love. Suddenly, you are falling.
You hit the ground and you are staring up in the sky in pure agony.
Your teammates, who have stood by you through everything, see who
has become their brother over the past couple year lying on the ground,
motionless. Every fan in the stands that have watched you step out on
that field are watching and waiting to see what is to become of the player
whose name and number is on the back of their jersey. Your coach, who
has put his full trust in you out on that field as a starter, runs out to see
his player that has listened to him and respected him throughout the year.
The atmosphere of the entire night drops. You lie there wondering what
you can do. You try to get up but the thriving pain does not let you. A
million unanswered questions rush through your head. How bad is it? Is
this the end? Will I be able to play the game that I love ever again? Will
all of my hard work ever pay off? Will I ever step foot onto this field
again?
Suddenly, your coach and trainer are standing over you. The blank
stare on their faces and look of worry in their eyes drain all energy and
hope left out of your body. What can you do but lay there and wait to see
what your future holds.
An anonymous famous athlete once said “Pick yourself up, dust
yourself off, and keep going.”
You find out that everything will get better, it will just take time. What
do you do? You work. You put all of your heart and effort into doing
whatever you can to put yourself back on that field. While you are gone,
your teammates are left without one of their best friends. They no longer
have you on the field where you have been all season. Never let your
teammates down. Put every force left in you into getting better so you
can step back out on that field and hear fans chant your name once again.
Put every ounce of hard work into making yourself stronger and more
able to do what you couldn’t do before. This is your chance to come back
better than ever. Your teammates are waiting eagerly for your return. Do
not postpone their hopes of seeing their teammate on the field again.
Babe Ruth once said, “Never let the fear of striking out keep you from
playing the game.”
Do not let the fear of injuries overcome you. Do not let your mind
doubt your abilities now. When things are terrible, pick yourself up, dust
yourself off, and keep going.
