Beat the Heat: Summer tips
Summer brings high temperatures and problems for
older adults who are at higher risk for heat related
illness. Tips for coping with heat, staying cool and
staying safe:
jj Wear light-colored, lightweight, clothing that is
loose-fitting for air circulation.
jj Wear a hat or use an umbrella when outside, even if
you are not in direct sun. Use sunscreen with an SPF
of 15 or greater anytime you go outside.
jj Drink water before outdoor activities and drink
water at regular intervals during the day.
jj Avoid beverages with caffeine or alcoholic
beverages that can aid dehydration.
jj Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the
day—before 10 am and after 6 pm.

jj During outdoor activity, take rest breaks frequently
and drink water every 15-20 minutes even if you
don’t feel thirsty. If you have clear, pale urine, you
are probably drinking enough fluids.
If you have a chronic medical problem, talk with your
doctor about additional precautions you should take
to prevent heat related illness. Some conditions and
medications may place you at higher risk. Resource:

Rent the Senior
Center
Spruce Up the Dining Room
Floor
Participants and visitors
have made many positive
comments about the
recent improvements to
the Senior Center. We offer many appealing rooms
to accommodate any type of meeting or event.
Renters love our main level banquet area – the
carpeted lounge adjacent to our huge wood floor is
the perfect space for mingling and dancing during
a birthday or anniversary celebration. Renters also
enjoy the benefits of affordable rates, inclusive
setup, restaurant-quality kitchen and non-exclusive
catering options. Not to mention our prime downtown
location! Consider renting space at the Senior Center
for your next special event and refer your family and
friends. If you have any questions or want additional
information, please call Karen, Rental Coordinator, at
266-6290.
From Friday, August 10 through
August 17, the dining room floor will be
refinished. There may be some dust,
some fumes and a slight odor. The
Nutrition Site will move to the
Craft Room for the entire week.
Some classes will be cancelled
including Zumba (Monday, 8/13) and
the Thursday Afternoon Dance (8/16). The downstairs
restrooms will also be closed for the week. Thank you
for your patience during the process. Please check the
calendar for details.

Your Personal Donation Counts!
People believe that foundations and companies contribute the most to fundraising for non-profit
organizations. In fact, MOST money (73%) comes from individual donors like you (Giving USA 2012).
At the Senior Center, the yearly budget for programs and special events – expenses not covered by the City
– is about $35,000. That is a significant amount for the Senior Center Foundation to raise. Did you notice
the logos of our corporate sponsors displayed above? We value and appreciate them, but their combined
contribution is less than 30% of that needed to sustain our programs, activities and special events.
How do we use your donation? Contributions are invested by the Senior Center Foundation. Each year, the
Senior Center director presents a request to the Foundation board for the annual support of our programs
and activities. We depend on you to “Help Our Foundation Grow” and, therefore, provide our participants
with Senior Center programs and activities. Be part of that essential 70%. Your personal donation counts!
Please use this donor coupon to make your contribution today. Or, make your donation electronically:
http://www.cityofmadison.com/seniorcenter/donations. Thank you very much!

Volunteer Spotlight:
Helen Aarli
Helen Aarli’s commitment to
volunteerism spans several
decades. She volunteers
because she defines herself
as part of a larger community
where each of us is responsible
for the other. She characterizes herself as a
feminist, a supporter of gay rights, and respectful
of all cultures.
She volunteers as co-producer/co-host of Senior
Beat. It offers many opportunities to meet
interesting people, learn a great deal about issues
affecting older adults, and develop interviewing
skills (see Senior Beat schedule on page 3).
Helen is involved with three PLATO classes:
politics, philosophy and art museums (where
she is coordinator). The classes provide a means
to continue learning and growing and develop
friendships. She serves on PLATO’s curriculum
committee.
Helen characterizes herself as “genetically
political,” and Madison provides a perfect
environment for meaningful and direct
involvement in politics, art and learning.
For Helen, the definition of successful living is
personal involvement in the present moment.
Being interested, active and engaged in life and
her community are vital components of Helen’s
life.
