Gollum and Me
GOLLUM AND ME
SMEAGLE - BEFORE
GOLLUM - AFTER
• Smeagle would be classified as a man with
“multiple personality disorder.”
• He heard “voices.” (one in particular that
greatly influenced his life)
The Voice of Gollum:
1. Speaks 1st Person – It disguises itself as your
personality, not the alien entity that it is
2. It always speaks “for your defense”
– Save yourself
– Look out for #1
3. It always promotes mistrust and suspicion
4. When it speaks, righteousness, peace and joy
leave
5. As Smeagle listened to Gollum, he took the
name of Gollum
Your “little buddy” will try to return
When you are offended
• Smeagle perceives himself to be “wounded by
a friend”
1 Chronicles 4:10
• (1 Chronicles 4:10 LITV) And Jabez called to
the God of Israel, saying, If indeed You would
bless me, and make my border larger, and
Your hand would be with me, and that You
would keep me from evil so that it may not
grieve me! And God gave him what he asked.
“That it may not grieve me”
• aw-tsab'
• A primitive root; properly to carve, that is,
fabricate or fashion; hence (in a bad sense) to
worry, pain or anger: - displease, grieve, hurt,
make, be sorry, vex, worship, wrest.
The problem with wounds, is that if
we aren’t careful, we can find our
identity in them!
• Our wounds can “fashion, or “carve out” our
lives
• Unfortunately, many people have had a
“hand” in our lives
• Jabez –
– His mother’s pain had fashioned his life
– His father’s absence had fashioned his life
– The reproach of his name had fashioned his life
If we’re not careful:
• These wounds become the focus of our life,
AND EVENTUALLY OUR GOD!
• This is the difference between many of the
world’s therapeutic systems and the church
• We begin to live from the “puss” that flows
from those wounds!
• There is an antidote!
– Exodus 15:22-26
Jabez’ Cry – Let your hands shape
me!
• Isaiah 49:15-16 NIV "Can a mother forget the
baby at her breast and have no compassion on
the child she has borne? Though she may
forget, I will not forget you! (16) See, I have
engraved you on the palms of my hands; your
walls are ever before me.
• (Zechariah 13:6 KJV) And one shall say unto
him, What are these wounds in thine hands?
Then he shall answer, Those with which I was
wounded in the house of my friends.
Isaiah 53:2-5
• At the Cross, a “GREAT EXCHANGE” took place.
• 2 Cor 5:21 – Our Sin for His Righteousness
• Isaiah 61:3
– Beauty for ashes
– Joy for Mourning
– Praise for the spirit of heaviness
You can hold on to His Wounds or
Embrace His!
• (2 Corinthians 4:10 NIV) We always carry
around in our body the death of Jesus, so that
the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our
body.
