02 English Update Quarter Honor 03 3rd Roll List 04 Kids Grieve, Too SPARTAN NEWS F E B R U A R Y 2 0 1 2 From the desk of Maria T. Jaeger Happy New Year and welcome back! S andusky Middle School enjoyed a fantastic first half of the school year. Our students continue to strive academically, athletically and behaviorally. As we progress towards the second part of the school year I would like to encourage all of us to work together to assure our students’ continued success. Please check Edline for your student’s assignments and to stay updated on all the events at our school. If you still do not have login information, please contact us. Let’s continue to instill good attendance habits as well. There is a proven connection between good attendance and school success. It is this partnership between parents, students, school and community that makes us successful and I know that we will continue to work together towards that end. As always, feel free to contact me with any concerns and any suggestions. Sincerely, Maria T. Jaeger Principal Tryouts for the SMS Boys and Girls English Department News Soccer teams will be held shortly after the Winter Sports Banquet that is scheduled for February 13th. Candidates must have a current sports physical form on file or in hand and meet the school’s academic requirement. The SMS English department has been extremely busy this winter! ACCELERATED READER: Our November incentive for Accelerated Reader to FunQuest was a huge success, and the children had a wonderful morning, skating, playing games, and enjoying some time with their friends. The next AR incentive is planned for the end of the fourth six weeks. Sixth and seventh grade will be hosting a dance/field day for their eligible readers. In the eighth grade, students who meet their goal will participate in a College Day, where they will have the chance to take a tour of one of our four local colleges/universities: Lynchburg College, Randolph College, CVCC, or Liberty. In addition, we will continue with our monthly collegiate give-aways in conjunction with our DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. Students who are in the 25 point club in AR will be eligible in February for a drawing for gear from Virginia Tech. So, parents, PLEASE encourage your students to keep reading at home! Not, of course, just for AR incentives, but because a love of reading truly is the cornerstone of every child’s education! SOL WRITING TESTS: The eighth grade English department is preparing our students for their SOL writing tests, coming up the first week of March. Students will take the multiple choice assessment on March 6, and the direct writing assessment on March 8. Parents, please mark these dates on your calendars, and make sure your child gets plenty of rest and a good breakfast on those mornings! Eighth graders will also participate in an online field test in writing the last week in March. SPELLING BEE: SMS is once again participating in the Scripts Howard Spelling Bee. Our classroom winners will participate in the school bee on January 20, and our winner will then move on to the regional bee. Good luck, spellers! YOUNG AUTHORS CONTEST: All grade levels are participating in the Young Authors writing competition, sponsored by the Piedmont Area Reading Council. Students will submit entries in the essay, poetry, and short fiction categories. BRIGHT STAR TOURING THEATER: SMS won a grant from the Educational Foundation to bring the Bright Star Touring Theater to our school. On February 3rd, we will kick off our Brotherhood Month with their performance of The Struggle for Freedom: The Harriet Tubman Story. We are excited to be able to give our students this exposure to live theater, and hope they will enjoy watching history come alive through this performance. B O J KIDS GRIEVE, TOO (Taken from CENTRA Mental Health Matters December 2011) Grief is often thought of as a journey that never ends. Cyclical in nature, and often resurfacing at different times throughout a person’s life, grief is intertwined with growth. There are no “right” or “wrong” ways to grieve, and children should be allowed to grieve, not protected or sheltered from the loss by well-meaning adults. Recognizing and respecting the way a child grieves is critical to a family’s healing process. Adolescents begin to comprehend their own mortality and the finality of death. They may act out, engage in dangerous activities in an attempt to defy death or may compartmentalize their feelings, not wanting to share their emotions with adults. What are you doing Charlie Brown? Looking for grandpa in the clouds. Grief doesn’t end, but it changes in character and intensity as time goes by. By allowing children to grieve in healthy ways, there will be healing and relief from the pain.
