PREPARING OUR WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT PROFILE Countywide Development in 2013: MARYSVILLE EARLY COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL AND UNION COUNTY INNOVATION CENTER 23 Commercial/Industrial Projects / $65.4 million 279 Single Family Residential Units / $67.3 million
In 2013, Marysville Exempted Village School District was awarded $12.4
million through the State of Ohio’s Straight-A Fund to establish the
Marysville Early College High School and Union County Innovation
Center. The Center will be Ohio’s first manufacturing-related STEM
Early College High School. By using a “Fast Track” school design, the
program will increase achievement for students as they earn 45-60
college credits and a high school diploma in four years.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT SCORECARD The three core elements of our Economic Development Program include:
Existing Industry Retention & Expansion, New Business Attraction & Recruitment,
and Marketing & Image Enhancement.
The Center will drive more resources to the classroom by transforming
a vacant school into a state-of-the-art innovation center where
partners will share space, services and programs that will increase
regional access to a high quality career/technical college and
innovative workforce-development programs. The school will serve
nearly 2,000 youths and adults by 2019.
MANUFACTURING LAB PILOT PROGRAM The Computer Integrated Manufacturing Lab Program, a regional pilot
program launched in 2013, will establish (or expand) permanent labs at
Tolles, Ohio Hi-Point, and Tri-Rivers Career Centers. The project also
includes the purchase of two mobile labs that will visit area schools and
industries to promote careers in the manufacturing sector. The
program will provide access to over 78,000 K-12 students and
potentially thousands of incumbent workers in Champaign, Franklin,
Hardin, Logan, Madison, Marion, Morrow, and Union Counties.
The mobile labs will be packed with CNC-technology, machinery,
computers, and other equipment to provide youth a more accurate
image of advanced manufacturing and to encourage them to select
this career path.

FY2013 ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT HIGHLIGHTS HONDA OF AMERICA EXPANSION Honda of America Manufacturing, Inc. announced several projects in 2013, including
the construction of The Heritage Center, the Hybrid Accord Manufacturing Center,
and the Performance Manufacturing Center for the Acura NSX. Combined, these
projects represent an investment of nearly $124 million and the creation of
approximately 116 jobs.
SUMITOMO EWS PLANS MASSIVE FACILITY Sumitomo Electric Wiring Systems, which designs and manufactures electronic
systems for the automotive industry, announced it will consolidate the company’s
four Marysville locations into a new 355,000 SF facility in Marysville. The move will
retain existing 123 jobs and create 15 new jobs. MORIROKU TECHNOLOGY ANNOUNCES NEW FACILITY Moriroku Technology North America announced plans to construct a new 41,000
SF facility in Marysville. The facility, once constructed, will house the company’s
Headquarters, Research and Development, Sales, Purchasing, and Quality
Assurance operations. The project will also add 50 new jobs.
RICHWOOD BANK CONSTRUCTS OPERATIONS CENTER The rapidly growing Richwood Banking Company announced plans to construct a
12,500 SF Operations Center adjacent to its existing headquarters in Richwood.
The $1.75 million project will involve the demolition of an obsolete building and the
construction of the new two-level structure. The facility recently opened its doors. CONSTRUCTION OF MEIJER BEGINS Shoppers and retail enthusiasts in Marysville will soon have another option as
Meijer began construction of a new 192,000 SF retail center at Coleman’s
Crossing. The store, which will create 270 jobs, is expected to be open in Summer
2014.
MARYSVILLE WELCOMES NEW CITY HALL After much anticipation, Marysville’s new City Hall opened to the public in
November. The new facility consolidated municipal offices and is also the Marysville
Division of Fire’s Station 272, which provides emergency services to the Uptown
District. The former City Hall was demolished to make way for Partners Park - a new
events pavilion and green space that is expected to open in Fall 2014.
HERITAGE COOPERATIVE GROWS WITH NEW FACILITY Late in the year it was announced that Heritage Cooperative had purchased 276
acres in Marysville for a $38 million development. The project includes a 2.5 million
bushel grain terminal, a 2 million gallon liquid fertilizer tank, a 30,000 ton dry
fertilizer warehouse, as well as a research and testing facility. The project also
includes a significant upgrade of rail service to the site as well as the addition of 20
full-time employees and 15 part-time employees.
NEW MEDICAL OPPORTUNITIES COMING SOON Area residents will soon enjoy new opportunities for medical services thanks to
investments by Memorial Hospital of Union County and Nationwide Children’s
Hospital. Memorial Hospital began construction on a new 34,000 SF medical
complex that will house urgent care, physical therapy, and sports medicine
services. The $13.5 million project, once completed in Fall 2014, will create 10 jobs
and retain 30-35 existing positions. Likewise, Nationwide Children’s Hospital
launched construction on its new “Close to Home” Center. The 20,000 SF, $6.2
million facility will create 30-40 jobs and will open in Spring 2014.
UPTOWN MARYSVILLE REVITALIZATION
TEAM MARYSVILLE PARTNERS PARK Team Marysville, an association of
Marysville officials, business owners,
and residents, continued to work
toward improving the Uptown District.
Marysville City Leaders announced
that a new park would be constructed
on the site of the former City Building.
Partners Park, when completed in Fall
2014, will include an events pavilion,
splash pad, Japanese garden,
gazebo, public restrooms, and
expanded parking.
In 2013 the group created a new
Uptown logo, marketing materials and
recruitment packages, conducted two
Town Hall meetings, developed a
quarterly newsletter, conducted two
small business workshops, and offered
suggestions on the creation of the
proposed Partners Park.

creation of a Special Improvement
District (SID) that, if established, will fund
various infrastructure needs of the
Uptown District.
TOWN RUN RESTORATION Efforts to restore the Town Run
between Fifth and Fourth Streets in
Uptown Marysville was nearly complete
as 2013 came to an end. Work to
reinforce the stream bed was
completed, as was the installation of
railings and an informational kiosk.
Vegetation will be planted in Spring
2014 with the completion of the project
expected by Memorial Day.
MARYSVILLE ENTREPRENEURIAL CENTER RICHWOOD NEW/EXPANDED BUSINESSES Recognizing that fostering grassroots innovation and entrepreneurial
development is key to securing the future of our local economy, in late 2013
the City of Marysville and the Union County Commissioners formed a
partnership to provide financial assistance to the Marysville
Entrepreneurial Center (MEC).

To manage the growing entrepreneurial center, Duane Hammer and Gil
Reymann of Dogwood Business Development were joined by Chaz Freutel
of the Dublin Entrepreneurial Center to assume daily management
operations. Since their involvement, the MEC has witnessed a 40%
increase in the number of tenants and clients served.
In addition to providing office space for start-up enterprises, the MEC also
serves as the “one-stop” for entrepreneurs and small businesses wishing
to conduct business in Union County. Plans are underway to greatly
expand the programming offered at the MEC.

HONDA CELEBRATES MAJOR MILESTONES In November 2012, Honda of America Mfg. celebrated its 30th year of
production in North America. The company’s growth and expansion
also continued throughout 2013 as many important milestones and
accomplishments were achieved. Below are just a few of the
company’s major initiatives launched in 2013:

Heritage Center – Honda announced the construction of a new
160,000 SF, $35 million facility that will house a new training
facility, heritage center/museum, and office space.

Acura NSX Supercar - It was announced that the popular Acura
NSX Supercar will be assembled in Marysville. The project
includes a $70 million investment to an existing facility.

Honda Accord Hybrid - A Hybrid version of the Honda Accord will
be assembled in Marysville. The project represents a $19 million
investment and the expansion of a 94,000 SF facility.

Honda became the first Japanese automaker to become a net
exporter from the United States.

Honda sets an output record, producing 492,409 autos in Ohio.

Honda announced that it is moving its headquarters from
Torrance, California to Marysville, Ohio.

The company’s first Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) fueling
station will be constructed at its Marysville campus in 2014.
JAPAN & UNION COUNTY: A SPECIAL RELATIONSHIP MUCH TO GAIN FROM INTERNATIONAL TIES Recognizing the impact that Japanese-owned companies have on the
Union County and Columbus Region economies, in September
Marysville Mayor John Gore, Economic Development Director Eric
Phillips, and Honda Government & Diversity Relations Coordinator
Caroline Ramsey joined a delegation from Columbus 2020 and Franklin
and Logan Counties on a Trade Mission to Japan.
The Trade Mission included attendance at the Midwest US - Japan
Association Conference in Tokyo, retention visits to the parent
companies of several Union County automotive suppliers, corporate
visits to explore expansion opportunities, and a goodwill visit to YoriiTown to forge a Sister City relationship.
Despite our community’s strong international ties, until 2013, Marysville
did not have a formal Sister City relationship with a global counterpart.
Months of research and correspondence lead to a relationship being
formed between Marysville and Yorii-Town, Japan. Yorii-Town is a city
of 37,548 located in the Saitama Prefecture northwest of Tokyo.
Following the Trade Mission in September, a delegation from YoriiTown visited Marysville and Union County in December. It was during this
visit that a formal Sister City - Friendship Agreement was signed
between Mayor Gore and Mayor Shimada (Yorii-Town, Japan).
REGIONAL WORKFORCE ASSESSMENT The Union County CIC partnered with Columbus 2020 to complete the
Region’s first Workforce Assessment. The region-wide assessment will
provide a real-time understanding of the regional labor market,
industry nuances, and benchmark the Columbus Region against other
markets. The information collected will allow policy makers and
employers to be more informed about the regional labor pool.
JOINT WAGE SURVEY PLANNED Stemming from the Regional Workforce Assessment, Union and Logan
Counties partnered to conduct a joint Wage Survey. A committee
consisting of Logan and Union County Economic Development, Ohio
Means Jobs/Union County, Columbus 2020, and private industry was
created to spearhead the project. The survey will be launched in early
2014 with completion anticipated in the Spring.
EMPLOYABILITY VIDEO PROJECT
The CEO Roundtable has undertaken a video production to help local
students understand the skills and work ethic it takes to find
employment in Union County. The project will include testimonials from
the CEOs of many of Union County’s most prominent companies,
student testimonials, and “behind the scenes” footage of working
conditions. The video is being produced by students at Tolles Career
& Technical Center.

ORGANIZATIONAL REALIGNMENT To better serve the business interests of Union County, efforts were
completed to realign and reorganize the Economic Development
Partnership (EDP). Administration of economic development activities
were transferred to the Community Improvement Corporation (CIC).
This action better clarifies the roles of the CIC and the EDP, how funding
is obtained and how staff is managed. The realignment also follows
closely with how economic development is managed in similarly sized
counties.
Union County has the second‐highest GDP in the Columbus Region.
NEW ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY It is critical that communities plan for the future. That is why the Union County CIC
undertook efforts in 2013 to draft a new Economic Development Strategy (EDS), the
first such countywide economic development plan since 2003.
The lengthy and thorough process included detailed demographic and market
analysis and multiple stakeholder meetings with industry leaders, elected officials,
community partners, and educational institutions. Similar to Columbus 2020’s
Regional Economic Growth Strategy, the EDS focuses economic development
efforts on four main pillars:




Attracting new firms and investment to the community
Retaining existing companies to help grow the economy
Creating jobs through entrepreneurial development and innovation
Improving the public infrastructure to sustain long-term growth
Based on existing industry clusters and regional growth potential, the
Manufacturing, R&D, Agribusiness, Corporate Office, and Retail sectors have been
prioritized as the county’s Target Industries. In addition, the EDS places special
attention on fostering entrepreneurial development, improving civic infrastructure
to accommodate future growth, and enhancing workforce development efforts.
