Therefore, it will be necessary to contact your director of studies/ line manager to enable the preparation of a personnel emergency evacuation plan (peep). This will ensure that facilities and procedures are in place in the event of an emergency or that alternative locations are used. Disabled Access Guide for the Fleeming Jenkin Building This building is designed for, or has been adapted for the use of persons in wheelchairs, persons who have difficulty with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available. Introduction This building was named after, The late Fleeming Jenkin, Professor of Engineering in Edinburgh University, was remarkable for the versatility of his talent. Known to the world as the inventor of Telpherage, he was an electrician and cable engineer of the first rank, a lucid lecturer, and a good linguist, a skilful critic, a writer and actor of plays, and a clever sketcher. Location The Fleeming Jenkin building is located within Edinburgh University’s King’s Buildings campus; this campus is well served by public transport and is accessible by car. The building is within 3 miles of the city centre and 2 miles of the main halls of residence at Pollock Halls. The campus lies between West Mains Road and Mayfield Road, about 2 miles south of George Square. The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city Centre. The regular bus service between the Central area and King’s Buildings can be viewed at www.transport.ed.ac.uk/MapsAndTimetables/UniversityShuttleBus/ShuttleBusTimetable.shtm The Building is within 160 metres of the bus stops on Mayfield Road. The Numbers 41 & 38 Lothian buses will bring you to both the Campus and Mayfield Road. . Details of timetables are available from Lothian Region online (www.mybustracker.com) or from their offices within the city. Persons with mobility difficulties arriving by vehicle can access the Fleeming Jenkin building from gate numbers 3 & 4 which are located on Mayfield Road. City of Edinburgh Council parking is available out with the campus on the adjacent Ross Road and Hallhead Road. There are two disabled bays located to the front of the Fleeming Jenkin building within close proximity to Entrance 2. A further two are located close to Entrance 3 outside the adjacent Swann building. (See Area Plan for locations) Fleeming Jenkin Building disabled parking bays Access from disabled parking bays outside the Fleeming Jenkin Building is via Entrance 2 There is a level road surface leading from the disabled bays to a ramp at Entrance 2. Disabled parking bays located adjacent to the Swann Building Access from bays located adjacent to the Swann Building is via Entrance 3 Access from these bays requires crossing the road and are within 100 metres of Entrance 3 Outside Access Entrances 1, 3, 4 and 5 are primary building exit points; although due to the proximity of the disabled parking bays these can be used for staff access. Entrance 2 is the recommended access point for wheelchair users to the Fleeming Jenkin Building Entrance 1 is not recommended for wheelchair users due to there being stairs immediately after the doorway. Entrance 1 There are five entrances to the Fleeming Jenkin building. Entrance 1 is located to the front of the building directly across from the Fleeming Jenkins permit holder car park; this consists of a single door leading to a short flight of stairs. Entrance 2 Entrance 2 is accessed via the Faraday building directly opposite the disabled parking bays. Access to the Faraday building is via a concrete ramp. This ramp is not currently recommended for self-propelled wheelchair users. (See Location Plan for access points) Entrance 2 From entrance 2 there are three sets of double doors and ramped access to the Fleeming Jenkin Building. 5 Entrance 2 edit page 3 Door 3 Fleeming Jenkin Building Ground Floor Door 2 Entrances Wheelchair Access Route Ramp Door 1 L 2 The Engineering Teaching Organisation office is located close to entrance 2. Access to the office is via a push pad on the perimeter wall. Faraday Building Entrance 2 Entrance 3 Entrance 3 is located to the rear of the Fleeming Jenkin Building. Access to this entrance is via a paved footpath leading to an asphalt parking area. This entrance provides access to the laboratories on the Ground Floor. There is no internal access to the rest of Alrick the building from Entrance 3. Entrance 3 is not recommended for self-propelled wheelchair users. 4 1 Car Park 2 Fleeming Jenkin Building 5 3 A swipe card is required to gain access to the Fleeming Jenkin Building. 2 Alrick Building Disabled parking bays outside the Swann Building (No Parking) There is a steep gradient leading to Entrance 3. Area plan of the Fleeming Jenkin Building Entrances Wheelchair Access Route Disabled Parking Bay (Permit) Vehicle Access Route The paved footpath (pictured above) leads from the disabled parking bays outside the of the Swann building. Entrance 4 Entrance 4 is located to the side of the Fleeming Building. Access to this entrance is across the permit holder’s car park and is via a long steep gradient between two buildings. This pathway also provides access to entrance 5. This access point is not recommended for self-propelled wheelchair users. 5 Entrance 4 is within 100 metres of the disabled parking bays to the front of the Fleeming Jenkin Building. 1 This door has a turning door knob at wheelchair accessible height. Ground Floor Fleeming Jenkin Building 4 (See Floor Plan for Access Point) Entrances Wheelchair Access Route Disabled Parking Bay (Permit) Vehicle Access Route Ramp Steep gradient leading from the Fleeming Jenkin car park Entrance 5 Entrance 5 is located to the rear of the Fleeming Building. Access to this entrance is across the permit holder’s car park and is via a long steep gradient between two buildings. After Entrance 4 there is an uneven slabbed surface that levels out towards the entrance 5. There is a wheelchair accessible ramp leading to the door. This access point is not recommended for self-propelled wheelchair users. 5 This is a heavy door and has a handle at wheelchair accessible height. 1 The ramp leading to Entrance 5 has a tactile surface and handrails to both sides. Ground Floor Fleeming Jenkin Building 4 (See Floor Plan for Access Point) Entrances Wheelchair Access Route Disabled Parking Bay (Permit) Vehicle Access Route Ramp There is an uneven paved area with a shallow gradient leading from Entrance 4. Inside Access From Ground Floor there is access to the Faraday Building via a walkway which has a shallow gradient. There is also access to the Alrick Building from the first and ground floors of the Fleeming Jenkin Building. (See Floor Plan for access point) Reception There is no reception or servitors office in the Fleeming Jenkin Building. There is an office in the adjoining Faraday building close to Entrance 2. A servitor is contactable from this office. Access to the Engineering Teaching Organisation office is via a push pad to the left of the doorway. There is one lift in the Alrick building which is accessible from the main lobby. The Alrick building has two entrances. Entrance 1 is located at the front of the building opposite the Swann Building and Entrance 2 is located at the side of the building (this leads directly to the lift). The lift is located close to the lobby via a set of double doors from Entrance 1. The lift can also be accessed from Entrance 2 at the side of the building. This lift incorporates the following Equality Act recommended features: Emergency call button and controls are at wheelchair accessible height. Hearing Loop Audible announcer The lifts are fitted with photoelectric cells. (See Floor Plans for locations) Stairs In the Fleeming Jenkin Building there are three stair cases which provide access to all floors. All stair cases within the building have contrasting nosings and tactile coverings on the steps. There are handrails on both sides. Stairs leading to the Basement Floor close to Entrance 2 (See Floor Plans for locations) Toilets Toilets are available on all floors as follows: Unisex standard toilets are located on Ground and First floors Accessible toilets are located on the Ground and First Floors. Accessible toilets have emergency pull cords. The Basement Floor toilets are male The ground floor accessible toilet is adjacent to Entrance 1. Accessible toilets are accessed via a narrow corridor.
