unable to self-evacuate in an emergency. Provision for staff/students/visitors who are
unable to self-evacuate is the responsibility of the organiser of the

Disabled Access Guide for the Fleeming Jenkin Building.
This building is not designed for, but in part has been adapted for the use of persons in wheelchairs, persons who have difficulty
with mobility or are infirm. Seating is available. Accessible and standard toilets are also available.
Introduction.
The late Fleeming Jenkin, Professor of Engineering in Edinburgh University, was remarkable for the
versatility of his talent. Known to the world as the inventor of Telpherage, he was an electrician and
cable engineer of the highest standard, a lucid lecturer, and a good linguist, a skilful critic, a writer
and actor of plays, and a clever sketcher.
Location.
The Fleeming Jenkin building is located within Edinburgh University’s King’s Buildings campus; this
campus is well served by public transport and is accessible by car. The building is within three miles
of the city centre and two miles of the main halls of residence at Pollock Halls. The campus lies
between West Mains Road and Mayfield Road, about two miles south of George Square.
The nearest railway line is at Waverley Station in the city Centre.
The nearest bus stops are located on Mayfield Road approximately 180 metres from the Fleeming
Jenkin Building. Numerous bus services stop within the Campus and Mayfield Road. Details of
timetables are available from Lothian Buses, from their offices within the city and online from
www.mybustracker.co.uk.
Persons with mobility difficulties arriving by vehicle can access the Fleeming Jenkin Building from
Gates 3 & 4 which are located on Mayfield Road.

Parking.
The King’s Buildings Campus has numerous parking bays but no free parking; all parking bays within
the campus require a permit. City of Edinburgh Council parking is available outwith the campus on
Mayfield Road and the adjacent Ross Road. See Location Map.
There are currently no dropped kerbs leading from parking bays located along Mayfield Road.
Access from these parking bays to the campus is not recommended for wheelchair users without
assistance.
Disabled Parking Bays.
There are six disabled parking bays located close to the Fleeming Jenkin Building.
There are two disabled parking bays located to the front of the Fleeming Jenkin Building and two
additional disabled parking bays to the front of the William Rankine and Swann Buildings. All
disabled parking bays are located on a level tarmac surface within close proximity to the building.
Please note that all access routes leading to the Fleeming Jenkin Building incorporate a steep
gradient and are not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance.

University Car Parks.
There is ample University parking located to the front of the Fleeming Jenkin Building and there is
additional parking to the front of the William Rankine Building. There are additional University car
parks located within close proximity to the building and throughout the King’s Buildings Campus.

contact is made with your host or the Transport & Parking Office prior to making your journey.

Access Routes.
There are three main access routes to the Fleeming Jenkin Building.
Please note that all access routes incorporate a steep gradient and are not recommended for
wheelchair users without assistance.
Access Route 1.
This access route leads to Entrances 4 & 5 from the disabled parking bays located to the front of the
Fleeming Jenkin Building.
The access route starts by negotiating a long level tarmac surface along the front of the building.
From here there is a steep gradient to the side of the building which leads to Entrance 4. Entrance 5
can be accessed by proceeding to the rear of the Fleeming Jenkin Building and negotiating an
uneven paved footpath.

Access Route 2.
This access route leads to Entrances 4 & 5 from the disabled parking bays at the front of the William
Rankine Building.
The access route starts by negotiating a paved footpath which incorporates a steep gradient, a set of
cycle gates and handrails to both sides. From the bottom of this footpath there is access to
Entrances 4 & 5 via an uneven paved surface.

Access Route 3.
This access route leads to Entrance 3 from the disabled parking bays outside the Swann Building.
The access route starts by negotiating a moderate gradient to a busy road. This road incorporates
dropped kerbs but does not incorporate a pedestrian crossing. From the road there is a footpath
which leads to the rear of the Fleeming Jenkin Building. This footpath has a shallow gradient and a
paved surface.
Entrance 3 can be accessed from this footpath via a dropped kerb and a tarmac parking area.
Please note that this parking area is on a steep gradient.

Outside Access.
There are five entrances to the Fleeming Jenkin building.
Entrance 1.
This entrance is located on a level tarmac surface to the front of the building. Please note there is
no level access to the rest of the building from this entrance.
Entrance 1 consists of a secure single width timber door. This door opens inward, incorporates a
raised threshold and door handles at an accessible height. There is a swipe card point located to
the left of the doorway at an accessible height. Following the entrance there is a short flight of steps
which lead to the Ground Floor. These steps incorporate handrails to both sides and contrasting
nosings on steps.

Entrance 2.
This entrance is located adjacent to the Fleeming Jenkin Building car park within close proximity to
the disabled parking bays. Entrance 2 is the main entrance to the Faraday Building but it is also the
recommended wheelchair access point for the Fleeming Jenkin Building.

Access to this entrance is either via a two stage concrete ramp or a flight of steps from the adjacent
footpath. The ramp incorporates a moderate gradient with rest stops between stages and handrails
to both sides. Steps do not incorporate contrasting nosings/ tactile coverings on steps but do
incorporate handrails to both sides and areas of tactile paving.
Entrance 2 consists of a secure single width glazed door. This door incorporates door handles at a
wheelchair accessible height. There is a swipe card point located to the left of the doorway within
comfortable reach of a wheelchair user.

Entrance 3.
This entrance provides access to the Ground Floor and is located to the rear of the building on a
smooth concrete surface. Please note that this entrance is not recommended for wheelchair users
without assistance. See Access Routes for more details.
Entrance 3 consists of a secure set of narrow double doors. These doors open inward and
incorporate door handles at a wheelchair accessible height. There is a swipe card point located to
the left of the doorway which is within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user.

Entrance 4.
This entrance provides access to the Ground Floor and is located to the side of the building on a
level concrete surface. Please note that the access route to this entrance is not recommended for
wheelchair users without assistance. See Access Routes for more details.
Entrance 4 consists of two secure single width doors. Both doors open outward, will permit the
passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles at a wheelchair accessible height. There is a
swipe card point located to the right of the doorway which is within comfortable reach of a wheelchair
user. Please note that the door located to the right of this entrance, remains closed at all times.

Entrance 5.
This entrance provides access to the Ground Floor and is located on a level tactile surface to the
rear of the building. Entrance 5 can be accessed from the adjacent footpath via a tactile ramp. This
ramp incorporates a moderate gradient and handrails to both sides. Please note that access routes
leading to this entrance are not recommended for wheelchair users without assistance.

Entrance 5 consists of a secure single width heavy metal door. This door opens outward, will permit
the passage of a wheelchair and incorporates door handles at a wheelchair accessible height.
There is a swipe card point located to the left of the doorway which is within comfortable reach of a
wheelchair user.

Internal Access.
Level access to the First Floor of the Fleeming Jenkin Building is only possible via link corridors from
the adjacent Faraday and Alrick Buildings. Both access points are suitable for self - propelled
wheelchair users if negotiated with care. See Floor Plans for details.
Access from the Faraday Building.
There is level access between the Faraday and Fleeming Jenkin Buildings via a covered walkway on
the First Floor. The covered walkway incorporates a ramp with a moderate gradient and a set of
double doors. Doors at this access point will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate
door handles/ viewing panels at a wheelchair accessible height.

Access to the Alrick Building.
There is internal access between the Alrick and Fleeming Jenkin Buildings via a corridor on the First
Floor. The access route leading from the Alrick Building incorporates a ramp and two single width
doors. The ramp has a long shallow gradient and incorporates a handrail to one side. All doors
open inward, will permit the passage of a wheelchair and incorporate door handles/ viewing panels
at a wheelchair accessible height.

Internal Access Route from the Faraday Building.
This access route leads from the Faraday Building Main Entrance (Entrance 2) to the Ground Floor
of the Fleeming Jenkin Building.
The access route to the Fleeming Jenkin Building starts by negotiating a set of double doors from
the main entrance. These doors provide access to the Faraday Building lobby, the ETO Office and
the internal lifts. To the rear of the Faraday Building lobby there is a covered walkway which provides
access to the Fleeming Jenkin Building. Doors leading to and away from the covered walkway are
held open to promote ease of access.
The covered walkway has a steep gradient with a tiled surface and does not incorporate handrails.
All doors will permit the passage of a wheelchair, incorporate glass panels and door handles at a
wheelchair accessible height.

Access to the Engineering Teaching Organisation Office (ETO).
The ETO office is located within the adjacent Faraday Building. The office can be accessed via a set
of push pad operated doors from the Faraday Building lobby. The push pad is located to the left of
the doorway within comfortable reach of a wheelchair user.

Reception/ Engineering Teaching Organisation (ETO).
There is no reception or servitors desk located within the Fleeming Jenkin Building.
The Engineering Teaching Organisation Office (ETO) is the closest information point to the Fleeming
Jenkin Building. Within the ETO there is a Teaching Support Office and a Student Support Office
which can provide directions and answer general enquires. Both offices incorporate a reception
desk at a wheelchair accessible height but do not incorporate induction loop systems.

Lifts.
There are no lifts within the Fleeming Jenkin Building.
Stairs.
There are three staircases within the Fleeming Jenkin Building which serve all floors. All stair cases
within the building incorporate contrasting nosings, tactile coverings on steps and handrails to both
sides.

Toilets.
Toilets are available on floors as follows:

Unisex standard toilets are located on Ground and First Floors

Accessible toilets are located on the Ground and First Floors.

Male standard toilets are located on the Basement Floor.
The accessible toilets incorporate the following:

There is right hand lateral transfer space.

There is limited manoeuvring space.

There is an emergency pull chord.

The doors open outwards.
−
The width of the accessible toilet door is suitable for wheelchairs.

There are suitable dropdown and support rails for transfer.

The tap type is lever operation.

There are coat hooks.

The contrast between the grab rails and wall is fair.
−
The contrast between the walls and floor is good.

Lighting levels are good
