Specializing in contemporary art, the Gallery actively supports the visual arts in Quebec and in Canada by acknowledging established artists and promoting emerging artists. For this exhibition, XylonQuébec has invited three accomplished engravers and chosen 24 others whose innovative practices challenge the codes of print media. Torture is a crime under international law and yet it continues to be practiced in the majority of the world’s countries. This exhibition features eight torture survivors who live in Canada. XYLON AND THE REINVENTION OF ENGRAVING Wednesday, September 14, 10 a.m. stewart hall art gallery – project room Ingeborg Hiscox and Rolande Pelletier, artists from the Xylon Outside the Norms exhibition, tell us the story of XylonQuebec, an association of relief engravers of which they are both members. Xylon is committed to promoting the art of relief printing, an old technique that has demonstrated its potential to be continuously reinvented. The artwork focuses on the theme of transportation. With original compositions inspired by the beauty and eccentricity of his music, six improvising musicians present an entirely new take on Satie. The composer’s epic Symphony No. 3, inspired by Highland fogs and Gothic landscapes, is conducted by the young Kensho Watanabe. Completing the program, the magnificent overture The Fair Melusine is imbued with elegance and grace. The Taurey Butler Trio performs a vibrant interpretation of this famous album. Guest singer Éléonore Lagacé will join the trio for a few songs. ENSEMBLE LA CIGALE EN DUO LA DIVINA CIACCONA Sunday, September 25, 3 p.m. Classical Sara Lackie, baroque harp; Madeleine Owen, baroque guitar, theorbo A concert showcasing plucked strings as they bring together ciaconnas and other pieces by Italian and Spanish composers of the baroque period, creating a shimmering tapestry of sound. Sam Kirmayer Quartet TRIBUTE TO WES MONTGOMERY Sunday, October 9, 3 p.m. Jazz Sam Kirmayer, guitar; Andres Vial, piano; Mike De Masi, bass; Dave Laing, drums This concert celebrates the work of Wes Montgomery, widely recognized as one of the most important jazz guitarists of all time. Much has been said of his contributions as an improviser and interpreter of melodies, but his equally brilliant work as a composer has often been overlooked. 8 CULTURE NOTES / 2016 fall orchid ensemble Sunday, October 16, 3 p.m. World music Jonathan Bernard, marimba, percussions; Xiaomei Zhu, zheng; Lan Tung, vocals, erhu East meets West as the Orchid Ensemble blends musical traditions and instruments from China, Europe, and other lands, creating a beautiful new sound that is both creative and distinct. The group’s energetic performance style continues to intrigue and delight audiences. In English, French, and German, Weill’s masterpieces are accessible to all! MISC Sunday, November 6, 3 p.m. Jazz Jérôme Beaulieu, piano; Philippe Leduc, bass; William Côté, drums Modern jazz with a twist, based on a cohesive group effort rather than on personal virtuosity, is what Misc is all about. The trio uses audio sampling, a variety of percussions, and instrumental effects to create the unique sound that sets it apart. enzo de rosa the most beautiful film music Sunday, December 4, 3 p.m. Classical Enzo De Rosa, piano; Isabelle Metwalli, soprano A concert for music and cinema lovers alike: Enzo de Rosa at the piano, accompanied by soprano Isabelle Metwalli, invites you to relive unforgettable musical moments from famous films. MIKE GOUDREAU & THE BOPPIN’ BLUES BAND Friday, November 18, 7:30 p.m. Blues BOBBY STAGG BAND Friday, October 28, 7:30 p.m. Blues Bobby Stagg, vocals, piano; Adam Lalonde, drums; Stuart Patterson, bass; Barb Harris, additional vocals Bobby Stagg has recorded and toured with numerous Canadian artists over the past 25 years. His first solo album, Mean Business, travels down a roots and blues road with a healthy dose of Stagg humour thrown into the mix. 10 CULTURE NOTES / 2016 fall Mike Goudreau, vocals, guitar; Dany Roy, tenor sax; Maxime St-Pierre, trumpet; Norman Lachapelle, bass; Alain Bourgeois, drums; Benjamin Deschamps, baritone sax Mike Goudreau is one of those artists that you recognize with the first few bars of a song. Mike and the Boppin’ Blues Band play their brand of swinging blues, R&B, soul, and gospel. He delights us with enormous mirrors that capture the clouds, pigment miniatures that are sculptures of monochrome colour, and wall hangings that pull us into a sublime void. Directed by Heinz Peter Schwerfel (in English, with French subtitles) Anish Kapoor, Leviathan WOMEN ARE HEROES Wednesday, November 23, 7 p.m. JR, a French contemporary artist, is known for the large photographs he hangs in public spaces. With Women Are Heroes, he pays tribute to women, often victims of war and other crimes, from all over the world. The artist highlights their lives and everyday courage through oversized portraits of their faces and their gazes. CULTURE NOTES / 2016 fall 15 ART RENTAL AND SALES RENT OR BUY A WORK OF ART SUBMISSION OF ARTWORKS – ART RENTAL COLLECTION 2017 Buy or rent a work of art chosen from approximately one hundred original works selected by a jury of professional artists. For a fee starting at $13 a month, you can bring the work of contemporary artists into your everyday life. Every fall, the Art Rental and Sales Service renews its collection by inviting the artists of the greater Montreal area to submit their works to a professional jury. Selected works are exhibited at the Gallery, then made available to the public for rental or purchase. THE BOUTIQUE CHILDREN’S CORNER: All kinds of items designed for children, handmade by local artisans. SECOND-HAND BOOK SALE: Books are available at bargain prices in the Reading and Reference Room. Children are introduced to artistic and cultural practices through a performance, a concert, a workshop, or a guided tour of an art exhibition.
