Press Release, May 9, 2016 kültüř gemma! – scholarship for migrant cultural production new scholarship holders selected The new scholarship holders for the kültüř gemma! scholarship for migrant cultural production have been selected. Out of over 150 applicants the rapper Item 7, the artist and curator Mariel Rodriguez, the activist Grave Latigo, as well as the author Vina Yun have been selected to receive the kültür gemma! scholarship 2016. kültüř gemma! has been supporting the artistic work from migrants, as well as a critical discourse on the relationship between art and migration ever since 2013. Apart from 4 one-year scholarships kültüř gemma! offers three fellowships at established cultural institutions in Vienna to support the establishment of migrant artists in the cultural field in Vienna. A jury of 6 experts from various cultural fields chose 4 projects out of a large number of applicants that take a very clear position politically, as well as aesthetically. Projects that combine local and global perspectives, and criticism with humour. This year's jury consisted of curator and head of dramaturgy at the Tanzquartier Gabrielle Cram, the musician and moderator Patrick Bongola alias Topoke, Gabriele Bagher from the Institut im Kontext, the journalist Hirut Kiesel, the artist Stephanie Misa, as well as the artistic director of the Brunnenpassage Ivana Pilic. The rapper Item 7, who proposed producing a musical based on his experiences with the Austrian system of asylum; the artist Mariel Rodriguez, who proposed researching the themes colonialism, narco-politics, and bio-piracy by using the image of the coca leaf; the activist Grace Latigo, who will show us her daily experiences in Vienna in a cheeky and grotesque stand-up show; and the author Vina Yun, who will create a graphic novel about the Korean community in Vienna were selected as recipients of this years scholarship program. The works of the scholarship holders will be presented together at the end of the year.
