CNYLIVE: How did you meet the other members of Soul
Risin’
Lead vocalist and guitarist for Soul Risin’
BRYAN: I had met our original drummer through a series of
strange coincidences, and it just so happened he was starting
a project with a couple other guys (our lead guitarist, Jeff
Pazer being one of them). It worked out for a short while,
and a good number of shows, but when Jeff and I parted ways
with him and the original bassist, Jeff knew John Capozzolo
(drummer) and I knew Adam Fisher (bass). Everything just
seemed to fit a bit better - the musicianship was there, and we
were really able to grow a lot more as a cohesive group. Then,
back in September 2007, when Adam invited Mike to come
play keys for us, the sound I’d always envisioned was finally
there. Now if I could only find a full-time, backing gospel
choir...
CNYLIVE: How did you get started playing and performing
music?
CNYLIVE: Any new recordings in the works?
CNY BAND PROFILE : Bryan Weinsztok
BRYAN: I’ve always been overrun by music. My father is
self taught on a number of instruments, my uncle is also a
musician and always pushed me to write, play and record,
and there was never a shortage of good music to listen to or
being played at home when I was a kid.
I started writing at a very young age, jotting down lyrics to
melodies I’d develop in my head. When I started playing guitar
it just seemed natural for me to put words to music, and
I always had an urge to perform in front of people. Any time
I had some sort of project or presentation to do for school I’d
often put it to song and it was pretty much a guaranteed A.
I suppose I always took advantage of any opportunity I could
to showcase myself.
When I got to the University of Florida is when I was really
able to start performing regularly in front of good-sized
crowds... and getting paid for it too. I met my good friend
Dan Maloney there within our first couple days and we just
hit it off musically. He’d played in a popular Tampa-based
band all through high school, and they let me sit in with them
a couple times during our first year of school. We were both
into the same types of music, and before we knew it, we were
playing regular acoustic-duo gigs multiple nights per week,
in the biggest and most popular bars in Gainesville. From
then on I was hooked and always itching to play shows.
CNYLIVE: Why the move to Syracuse?
BRYAN: I dare say for the weather, but why else would a
guy move from sunny South Florida to Upstate New York...
the real answer, my wonderful and stunning fiancé, Alaina.
She was finishing up her master’s degree up in Oswego, so I
just came up this way. Florida can wear on you after 25 years,
so it’s been a nice change. I suppose I just gave up golf for
snowboarding for six months out of the year.
BRYAN: Yes. We’re in the process of laying down some preproduction tracks to our second album (a follow up to our
first, When The Bridges Begin To Burn). Three rough takes
are currently up on the MySpace - www.myspace.com/soulrisin,
but we’ve been testing out quite a few new originals at our
shows. It seems like we’ve had at least one new one sneak its
way out every couple shows now, and I think we’re pretty
sure on the 10-12 tracks we’ll include on the new release.
CNYLIVE: What’s on tap this summer and fall for live
shows?
BRYAN: Some upcoming shows include: Syracuse Dinosaur
BBQ on August 2, Bull & Bear Pub on August 15, we’re
back at Shifty’s on August 29, and we’ve got a couple dates
at The New York State Fair (8/21 & 9/1 - opening and closing
nights). Some other cool gigs include the Second Annual
Cazenovia Ski Club Mountain Jam on September 20 - set
right at the bottom of the ski hill with a handful of other bands.
Last year was a lot of fun, with Los Blancos headlining, and
we’re really looking forward to being a part of it again this
year. Also, we’ll be at Dinosaur BBQ Syracuse again on
Halloween (10/31). We’re thinking of taking a page right out
of Phish’s book and trying to tackle a complete album cover.
We haven’t made the final decision yet, but we’re tossing
around the idea of doing what is probably my favorite Beatles
album... we’ll officially announce it sometime soon.
