This was the biggest picnic that we have had in a long time. Thanks to all for your assistance and attendance. Summer is passing quickly and we have enjoyed some busy months with many functions that were well supported and attended by nobles and their ladies. Al Shamal was well represented in Lethbridge for the 2013 PNSA. We were awarded the top Shrine Temple in the PNSA. Well done! This was in addition to our award winnings in the competitions. The Motor Corps, the Clowns and the TLC made us all proud again – congratulations! We were proud to participate in some “first time events” like the MS walk. Thank you for the great parade by the Clowns, Provost Corps, Motor Corps and the TLC unit. The Grit program enjoyed a graduation picnic at the Shrine Centre. The Clowns and TLC Noble Morris Riopel were there with balloons and rides on the fire truck. The Grit management were most appreciative of the $2,500.00 that we donated to them to help in their work with the challenged children. The “Calling of the Hogs” concluded with a roasted pig feast enjoyed by about 90 guests. A big thank you goes out to the Gold Bar Sobeys for donating most of the food and dessert. We also want to thank Illustrious Sir Barry Gogal for donating the pig and Noble Fred Susun for donating the keg of beer. Thank the divan members and nobles who assisted in the cooking using their best culinary skills. Thank you to Noble Terry Chapman who organized this fundraiser, which netted over $3,000. With the help of CFCW radio, we were able to help out a former Shrine patient, Melinda Kykosz, by donating our wheelchair equipped van to her and her grandfather John Cooper. Their need was great as their van was no longer road worthy. The town of Devon hosted a very successful Special Olympics. We attended the opening ceremonies, presented medals to the athletes and donated $5,000 to their program. We attended the Northern Lights Shrine Club Toll Gate held in Edson and raised over $7,000.00. Thanks to the Clowns and Provost Corps for attending and making this a great event. Al Shamal members enjoyed a great time in Indianapolis and were envied by all. Cpl. Noble Rod Carlton a member of Al Shamal and of the RCMP impressed everyone in red dress uniform with his escort services at the various events we attended. This was especially noted at the Canadian breakfast and made Al Shamal very proud along with Noble Russ Motiuk from the Provost Corps. who assisted with escort duties. I would like to thank Illustrious Sir Jim Templeton and his Lady Laurie for hosting a fun afternoon of fellowship along with great food and refreshment. Assisting with this undertaking (cooking, preparing and serving) were Illustrious Sir Barry Gogal and Lady Janis and Illustrious Sir Don Westdrop and Lady Carol from Al Azhar. There were over 125 guests enjoying the festivities of the afternoon. By the time you read this the 2013 Pote’s Golf Tournament will have taken place and most likely will sell out this year. Thanks to all who came out for some fun and support of this fundraiser. Ladies Night is coming up in October this year and there will be a cold sands for new candidates open to Nobles and Ladies. Information forthcoming. Enjoy what is left of our summer and continue to “help make children’s’ wishes come true”. Larry Howard Potentate 2013 Keep Our Children Safe Please obey the flashing warning lights indicating that students are leaving or boarding the bus. P.N.K. Transportation Services Ltd. Phone: 780-922-5487 or cell 780-920-2361 We came home to learn of Lady Patricia “Patti” Geldart’s passing. We will keep the memories of Patti in our hearts forever. Our condolences to Chief Rabban Grant Geldart and sons Greg and Troy. The annual Shrine Picnic saw the banquet hall at the Shrine Centre filled with happy families enjoying the hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and ice cream. Organized by Noble Fred Susun and the rest of the Divan and assisted by Nobles Ross Cyr, Russ Motiuk and Lady Ines, Morris Riopel and Lady Gustine, Peter Rodgers, the TLC, the Clowns Sept 2013 page 3 sahida RECORDER’S RAMBLINGS Recorders Ramblings Several activities have taken place since I last sat at the computer to create this message. We have been very fortunate to have a good turnout of volunteers to assist in the maintenance tasks at the Shrine Center: • the lawn is being cut and trimmed by David Pollack • the vehicles are being maintained by Jim Blake and Bob Disler • Ray Yuk and Bob Disler have the Tuk Tuks tuned up and ready for the parades • Russ Motiuk is looking after lighting replacements. Volunteering takes time away from your personal and private time. To all of you that volunteer in the many Shrine activities your time and efforts are much appreciated. Membership is a concern throughout the Shrine organization, locally as well as internationally. To date we at Al Shamal are at a Silver Status, but as fate strikes this could change due to Black Camels, suspensions and demits. There is a statistic which Shrine International use that indicates we need to increase our Nobility by 36 new members. This is only a statistic but does give us a goal to work toward. Keep a petition for membership in your wallet and when the opportunity comes up, take advantage, petition and welcome a new Noble to Al Shamal. Calling of the Hogs was a very successful event and was well attended. All those who attended enjoyed the feast and comradely along with the social side of the occasion. The banks were emptied and the contents counted and a profit was netted to support the Shrine Center. Our Oriental Guide Fred Susun donated the beer and the Pig was donated by Past Potentate Illustrious Sir Barry Gogal. Assistant Rabban Terry Chapman and Lady Bev chaired this event - thanks to both of you and all of the numerous other volunteers who helped. I encourage the next years Divan to host this event on Father’s Day in 2014. The support shown for the first annual event indicates that it could be a bigger and better. Mark your calendar for next year and make a date to attend the Calling of the Hogs on Father’s Day at the Al Shamal Shrine Center. I had the opportunity to attend the Imperial Sessions in Indianapolis. I enjoy theses sessions because I get to see and hear what is being done Internationally. The Pageant for the newly elected Imperial Potentate is always impressive. This year CPL. Rod Carlton an Al Shamal Noble represented Al Shamal, Alberta and Canada at the Pageant. I thought this added a nice touch to our attendance. page 4 One of the other highlights of the sessions is the introduction of the newly selected Shrine patient representatives and also the success stories of the Shrine Patients. It is a emotional time, but it also makes you feel good that you became a Shriner. Gary Willis Recorder BATTLE RIVER SHRINE CLUB We have enjoyed a great summer. We’ve attended well over half a dozen parades so far mostly followed by great BBQ’s and parties hosted by local Nobles. Since we started parading back in ‘07 or so, our rule has been ‘If there’s no after-parade party then no parade’. This has been fun, but of greater importance, it has also promoted greater unit bonding and made us a much stronger band of Shriners. Another highlight was when one of our Nobles, Ward Oatway, of Clive, along with his wife Lori, were named Citizens of the Year for their service to the community. The town showed them off in an open convertible during their local parade. And, of course, Noble Ward wore his Fez in the parade. The PNSA was great fun and Al Shamal made its presence known. We were proud to have been in the presence of such august company. We’ll be back to our monthly dinner meetings starting in Ponoka on September 23rd. Guests from other clubs and units are always welcome. David Page President Battle River Shrine Club www.battlerivershrineclub.ca Shriner Noble David Page drives a miniature cAr in the parade. He is the President of the Battle River Shrine Club. HAVE YOU OBTAINED A NEW MEMBER? Sept 2013 sahida TLC Yes! I WANT TO BE A BOOSTER! Show your support for our award winning publication and become a Booster. For only $25.00 your name(s) will appear in every issue. First off, TLC would like to welcome two new members and their ladies to the corp., Nobel Wayne Barrett & his lady Estelle, Nobel Richard Jacobs and his lady Sheila. The TLC is having a great summer. By the end of August we will have participated in 16 parades including the MS Walk and K-Days parade providing us with the opportunity to get out, have some fun and connect with the people in the communities that we visit. We try to represent Al Shamal Shrine with pride as we spread TLC fun far and wide. PNSA in Lethbridge was well attended by eight TLC members with seven riding units. Our efforts were rewarded by receiving the “Best Overall Motorized 4 Wheel” trophy. Congratulations Nobels. Nobel’s Wayne Barrett, Rod Carleton, Peter Davis and their ladies experienced PNSA for the first time and looking at some photos, they really had a great time, we all did. We are in the process of finalizing details for the Annual Pyroghy Fest and if all goes well, the fest will be September 28th this year at the Shrine Center. Tickets are $25 and will be available through any member of the TLC. We are again capping ticket sales and we are expecting that with the help of our Shrine family, we will be selling out, so make sure you get your tickets early. Bring a neighbour ... bring a friend ... bring a Mason ... just bring someone and plan on a great evening. Contact the Shrine Office or Noble Dr. Herbert Delo Rey if you have knowledge of a Noble sick or in the hospital. This summer we did have some very sad news not only given to us but to Al Shamal, as a well known and loved Lady passed away on July 3, I am referring to Lady Patti Geldart, and our thoughts are with Grant and their two sons. So I again ask the Nobles (sorry if I am sounding like a broken record) who do not belong to a unit to consider checking us out. You are more than welcome to attend our practices which are held on the second, third & fourth Mondays of each month (except July, August & December) in the Auditorium located at the Glenrose Hospital 10230-111 Avenue starting at 7:30 pm. Our trailer is serving our needs very well. A big “thank you” to all the Nobles who Noble Pat Brown Aboard Our Trailer participated in the parades. Special appreciation goes out to Noble Bob Duncan Jr. for marching with a flag to lead our Unit. Also, a hearty “atta boy’’ to Noble Jean Deslauriers for maintaining our trailer and using his vehicle to pull our trailer (and to Ill. Sir Doug Grant for pitching in to pull at the Bashaw parade). A number of our Nobles continue to faithfully volunteer at the Castledowns Bingo Hall to help raise funds in support of our Shrine. This requires about a day per month but is well worth the effort as we have a great time interacting with the clientele and each other during a typical work shift. I hate to end on a somber note, but there is an issue that I should publicly address that affects us all. As with some other Units, succession planning for our executive members is becoming a bit of a challenge. Why? Because not enough of our newer, younger Nobles are prepared to commit themselves to joining a Unit. This is becoming a Bingo Player Extraordinaire matter of grave concern. Already we are seeing evidence of using ‘recycled’ former executive Nobles to keep things going. The answer to this issue rests in the hands our our Shrine’s junior members. We need you fellas to step up to the plate and help keep our Units – and our Shrine – a vibrant force in our community. Respectfully submitted by, Noble Mahlon Weir Captain Deadline ‘Working’ At A Bingo? At our June meeting we decided to donate $60,000 to several worthy charitable causes. We plan to present $5,000 to each of the following: Winnifred Steward Association; Edmonton Rite To Learn Foundation; Elves Special Needs Society; and, Kids With Cancer Society. We currently have applications submitted to AGLC to obtain permission to donate $25,000 for research at the Montreal Shrine Hospital, and $15,000 to the Camp Health, Hope & Happiness Society. The original one is nearly 100 yrs old and is beginning to show its age, and has in some cases become unsafe, as well as just being too small for functions. As if all this were not enough Lori also chaired the centennial for the Village of Clive last year, raising nearly 20 thousand dollars. It was very successful having the best fireworks outside of the Calgary Stampede. Ward was born in Calgary and moved to farm in the Clive area as a child where his grandfather raised purebred Herefords. He attended Clive school for his elementary and Junior High education before completing high school at Lacombe Composite High School. He then attended Lethbridge Community College where he received a diploma in Criminal Justice. After an 8 month agricultural exchange in New Zealand he returned to Lacombe and began work at Alberta Agriculture, where he was employed for 13 years and where he met his future wife Lori. Ward and Lori Oatway exemplify the idea of community involvement. Ward and Lori, who are new to the Shriner family, are active members of their small community. Seed growers south of the Village of Clive, Ward is president of the Clive Minor Ball Association and he currently coaches the Under 14 Girls Softball team, of which his daughter is a team member. The team is currently preparing for the Provincial Tournament in Calgary. He is also a board member of the Alberta Seed Growers Association and sits on several committees with this group as well as the Canadian Seed Growers Association. Ward is Junior Warden of Eureka Masonic Lodge #10 in Lacombe and a member of the Battle River Shrine Club and Al Shamal Shriners. In Ward’s words the real story is his wife Lori, who is a research scientist at the Field Crop Development Centre, Alberta Agriculture, in Lacombe. As well, she is chair of the parent council at Father Lacombe Catholic School in Lacombe, a member of Clive Agriculture and Athletic Society, and the Clive Hall Board. As a board member of CAAS she has been in charge of fundraising for renovations for the Clive Arena, which is approaching its 30th anniversary. To date she has managed to raise, through government grants and donations from industry and citizens, over $400,000 to go toward ice plant replacement, new boards and glass, a wheelchair lift, and numerous other upgrades and repairs. Along with massive volunteer help, she has made this project possible. Now she has taken on a new page 20 Lori was an Edmonton girl but at an early age her family moved to Stettler where her father was the regional director for Alberta Transportation. After completing her schooling in Stettler she attended the University of Alberta obtaining a degree in Agriculture. She began work at Alberta Agriculture where she has been employed for 20 years. She received her Masters degree in 2008 and is now in charge of the cereal quality lab, at the Field Crop Development Centre, determining grain quality for the breeding program there. Ward and Lori have two children Ezri (12) and Brie(10) who both attend Father Lacombe School in Lacombe and are active in school sports, softball and music. Creating a vital, healthy community is a group effort. And at the heart of it, you’ll find local organizations, fuelled by committed people who are passionate about building a better future for us all. That’s why we celebrate communitybased organizations through the contribution of our resources, time and talents. Together we can build the right foundation for our community. We are proud to support the Al Shamal Shriners in its mission to promote and support local projects and community initiatives to meet emerging needs within the Edmonton area. Noble Bud Salloum Sept 2013 page 31 Shriners International Name Reflects International Importance Back in 1872, when the Shriners fraternity was established, it made perfect sense to emphasize the middle-Eastern motif of the organization by naming it the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. While the fraternity is still based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth, neither that tongue-twisting formal name – nor even the more commonly-used name of Shriners of North America – fit the organization today. Today, there are active members of the fraternity located around the world, and an increasing effort to reach and recruit new members on an international scale. It is important they be acknowledged in the name of the organization. Consequently, at the 2010 Imperial Session in Toronto a resolution was passed to officially replace the corporate name, The Imperial Council of the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine for North America. The resolution also stated that Shriners International should replace the name or any abbreviated versions of it (such as Shriners of North America). Nobles are encouraged to use Shriners International when referring to the fraternity, both in speech and in any temple publications they produce. Also, just as a reminder, at the 2002 Imperial Session, a proposal to replace the word ‘temple’ with the word ‘Shriners,’ when the term is used as a proper name for a group of nobles was passed. For example, Mecca Temple is now Mecca Shriners. The word temple can still be used to designate general groups of Shriners, or the building where Shriners often gather. For example, there are now 195 temples located in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, the Republic of Panama, Philippines and Germany. There are also affiliated clubs located around the world. Whether we are attracting interest and members globally or locally, we want to be sure we make it as easy as possible for potential Shriners to understand who we are and what we do. Therefore, it was also decided that when speaking to or providing materials for non-Shriners, it is fine to refer to a temple with a secondary references of ‘chapter’, which is also a clear indication that we are a fraternity. All of these changes are part of an overarching effort to increase membership by using terms people everywhere can understand, accept and respond to in a positive way. Additional efforts include the website beashrinernow.com, which is specifically for potential new members. The future of the fraternity depends on increasing membership. While these efforts are important, it is equally critical for every Shriner to be willing to share his interest in and commitment to the fraternity with those around him.
