Her it age I nd ia Fest iva l – 2 0 15 Hindu Cultural Center of Connecticut, Inc. Hindu Cultural Center 96 Chapel Street Stratford, Connecticut www.hinduculturalcenter.org Dear Friends, On behalf of the Hindu Cultural Center of Connecticut (HCC), thank you for being a part of our ninth Heritage India Festival. This state has been so welcoming to my family and many others who are part of the HCC community, which makes us all very excited to host the Heritage India Festival. As in years past, we are particularly grateful to the Town of Fairfield for allowing us to hold this major event on the Town Hall Green. The Green affords us an open and sprawling venue to share our culture and traditions with the broader Connecticut community, and we are so happy to return to this location for another year. The festival is designed to share the diversity of India with you. Through food, music, dance, and, most importantly, conversations with people today, we hope you will learn more about India as well as the Indians who, like me and you, have chosen to call Connecticut home. Year after year, the Heritage India Festival also serves as a major fundraising event for the HCC. Your support is critical to both the existence and growth of this organization. By providing cultural and religious services for children and adults, we serve as an anchor for Indians throughout southern Connecticut. HCC’s leadership spent our early years establishing roots in the community. We are now focused on deepening these roots, and this means having the physical capacity to support the needs of Indians in the area. To that end, we will soon be submitting our conceptual plans for a mandir (a Hindu temple) to the Town of Stratford. As with so much of the HCC’s success, this growth is only possible if the community takes ownership of the project. We hope people across the state, and especially those in Southern Connecticut, will support the organization. You can do so by becoming a member or making a contribution to help us meet the goal of building this new temple and, in turn, helping our organization continue to grow. Finally, I would like to thank the Heritage India Festival Committee. This event would not be possible without their hard work and also the support of donors, sponsors and vendors. Thanks for sharing this day with us. Enjoy the festival! Sincerely, Balkrishna Sharma Chair, Board of Directors w w w. It started with four Levels but due to parents request now it has gone to six Levels. We have our own text books. We also have qualified teachers. The classes start from PreK Level, Level 1A and 1B, depends upon the age, Level 2 to Level 6. This year we started our classes in August 30. These classes start in Sunday's at 2:15 pm with Prarthana at the temple. We hold one solid hour of class. After classes we do Aarti at the temple. Our Mission Our mission is to have a student learn to read, write and speak basic Hindi. Students are encouraged to join HCC's other cultural programs, i.e. Rang Tarang, Holi, Janamashtami and many more cultural programs. Part of the Pathshala's requirement, students will participate in our Annual Kavita Pratiyogita. Each student will be texting poem in front of the Judges who will score them and award trophies to the winners. We offer mud-term and final exams. Students from Level 1A to Level 6 must pass the final exams to be promoted to next Level. At the end of the year we have Hindi Pathshala picnic where we hand out the certificates, play games and enjoy varieties of food For more information please contact HCC on the website or call Balkrishna Sharma at 293-258-2982. Bring a yoga mat and wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes. Please join us on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:30 to 10:45 am for gentle yoga asana (poses) and pranayama (breathing techniques) classes. These are ongoing, mixed, beginner and level 1 classes where we work with breath, alignment, flexibility, and strength in a way that is nurturing for all. Modifications and props are available to help the each individual stay safe and comfortable. Our goal is for the student is to find peace, calm, and serenity while gently restoring and healing the body, mind, and spirit. Taking time to still the mind and focus inwardly as one comes to the mat enhances the practice, and so we begin with a short meditation and several pranayama breathing exercises. The breath is integral throughout the entire session. We gently start to warm up the joints and muscles of the body. After moving through a series of classical yoga asanas and cooling down with some easy stretches, we take a deep relaxation (savasana). These practices help to reduce stress, calm the mind, and promote wellness. You will leave the class feeling renewed and relaxed. Here is a partial list of yoga’s benefits on participants: • reduces stress • promotes sound sleep • reduces cortisol levels • improves many medical conditions • relieves allergy and asthma symptoms • lowers blood pressure • lowers heart rate • creates a sense of well-being • reduces anxiety and muscle tension • increases strength and flexibility • slows aging process Instructors: Kamal Pandya Ji, Alok Mallik Ji, Wendy Simmons-Taylor Wendy Simmons-Taylor is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT 200). She took Iyengar-based yoga teacher training with Kim Valeri (YogaSpirit) in 2012, Therapeutic Restorative Yoga Teacher Training with Jillian Pransky, and studied Yin Yoga with Joe Barnet. Our efforts will be widespread across many disciplines (food/ drinks sales at events, clean-ups, charity walkathons, etc.). This past year, under the guidance of our advisors, Mrs. Anu Wadhwa and Mrs. Indu Aggarwal, the Youth Council has successfully completed multiple food and drinks sales, an HCC garden clean up and landscaping job, and our magnum opus, the Nepal Earthquake Walkathon. From these various efforts, we have raised almost $2,000 for charitable causes. 2015 was our first year as a council, and now we are focusing on keeping the youth involved by hosting and executing activities the entire community can participate. Some of these include stationary and clothing drives, social gatherings, and performance shows. We certainly hope we will amass a greater number of members this year, as our growth is indicative of our support. In order to be a part of the youth group, you must: 1. The name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sind, Gujurat and Maratha. Of the Dravid and Orissa and Bengal. It echoes in the hills of Vindhyas and Himalayas, mingles in the music of Yamuna and Ganga and is chanted by the waves of the Indian Sea. They pray for your blessing and sing thy praise. The salvation of all people is thy hand, thou dispenser of India’s destiny. Victory, Victory, Victory to thee. The Jana Gana Mana was composed by Shri Rabindranath Tagore and first sung at the Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress on December 27th, 1911. It was adopted as the National Anthem of India on 24th January, 1950 by the Constituent Assembly. The first stanza (out of five stanzas) of the song forms the National Anthem. 26 [email protected] w w w. H i n d u Cu l t u r a l C e n t e r. o r g 27 Hindu Cultural Center of Connecticut, Inc.
