September 4 - St. Paul Parish
Saint Paul Parish The Catholic Community of Princeton INVITED The Good News is that we have all been invited--invited to the Kingdom, invited to be disciples. It's a lifechanging invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and consideration that accompany these profound decisions. Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we believe God has called us. And while we pray for guidance and acceptance of God's will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solomon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life-changing decisions. Copyright (c) J. Joe When we gather at the Lord’s invita on as we have done today, some mes we encounter a word that is more challenging than comfor ng. In the Gospel, Jesus calls for renuncia on of all our possessions, the cross and hate. These are harsh words indeed! Only God knows what it would take for each of us even to begin to follow that instruc on. Perhaps the place to begin is to seek God’s Kingdom first rather than the things of this world. Jesus is really asking for commi ed disciples. So let us pray today for the strength to respond to that call in order to follow Jesus more closely A er the refreshment of summer, what a wonderful opportunity to live discipleship and community as we prepare for ParishFest 2016 on Sunday Sept. 18th beginning with a mul cultural mass at 11:30 am followed by a picnic under the tent. We are once again invi ng each family to bring an ethnic dish for our pot luck table together with our tradi onal American Cook-out. I also hope that many of our adults will be able to join us on the evening of Saturday, Sept. 17th for our Evening of Dancing Under the Stars. This adult only ac vity is a way to meet new people and to catch up a er the summer months. A reminder that as school begins if you have not yet registered or re-registered your children for our Religious Educa on Program that begins next weekend, our parish’s celebra on of Cateche cal Sunday, please contact our Religious Educa on Office this week! As we celebrate Catechetical Sunday next weekend, we have the opportunity to ask God’s blessing on all those involved in the catechetical ministries of our parish community. It is time for all of us to remember that through our baptism we have been called to witness to Rev. Msgr. Joseph N. Rosie Pastor [email protected] (609) 524-0505 Rev. Miguel Valle Parochial Vicar [email protected] (609) 524-0516 Rev. Daniel Gowen Parochial Vicar [email protected] (609) 924-1743 Deacons Mr. Frank Crivello [email protected] (609) 216-7576 Mr. Jim Knipper [email protected] (609) 216-7582 Mr. Paul Lachance, Ph.D. (Continued on page 7) Our Holy Father Speaks VATICAN CITY (CNS) -Jesus' loving gaze of tenderness and mercy extends to all who seek forgiveness no ma er how great or small their sins may be, Pope Francis said. While many o en feel "cast aside" because of their sins, Jesus offers encouragement and "tells us, 'Courage, come to me,'" the pope said Aug. 31 at his weekly general audience. "It is the moment of forgiveness, of inclusion in Jesus' life and the life of the church. All of us are sinners; whether great or small, we all are. The Lord tells us, 'Courage, come, you are no longer discarded. I forgive you, I embrace you.' This is mercy," he said. Reflec ng on the Gospel reading of Jesus' miraculous healing of a woman suffering from hemorrhages, Pope Francis noted the woman's persistence in trying to reach out to Jesus despite the fact that she was excluded from society because of her condi on. (Continued on page 16) Faith to Move Mountains During all Masses next weekend, on behalf of Bishop O’Connell, all parishioners who have not yet been contacted to join us in par cipa ng in the Diocesan Capital Endowment Campaign, Faith to Move Mountains will be invited to do so. You will be asked to consider a sacrificial gi to the campaign – one that is right for you. The response from many parishioners from St. Paul and throughout the diocese to date has been considerable. However, it is only through the par cipa on and support of every family that our diocese and parish can truly be successful. Bishop O’Connell can count on you, as he always has, for more success. Your gi will make a significant impact on St. Paul Parish over the next several years and for the long-term future of our Diocese. Bishop O’Connell has asked each of us to consider a small amount each month over a three-to-five year period. Pledging allows each of us the opportunity to make a sacrificial gi that will help to shape the Church we leave for future genera ons of Catholic families in our community. The suggested giving plans listed below are an example of how a pledge can have a profound impact on our parish and provide the Diocese with the endowments needed to permanently strengthen our parishes and schools, support our seminarians, re red priests, and deacons, grow our educa onal offerings, and enhance our social services: Suggested Gi Plans over 60 months: $250 per month given over 60 months equals $15,000!!! $200 per month given over 60 months equals $12,000!!! $167 per month given over 60 months equals $10,000!!! Suggested Gi Plans over 36 months: $167 per month given over 36 months equals $6,000!!! $83 per month given over 36 months equals $3,000!!! $50 per month given over 36 months equals $1,800!!! Thank you to all who have given to make our campaign a success. Our parish has pledge $ 718,295 from 64 gi s towards our goal of $1,635,000! Please prayerfully consider how you may be able to contribute. Your gi to the Faith to Move Mountains Campaign is greatly appreciated! Thank you for your generosity! Page 2 Our Parish Mission We, the Catholic Community of Saint Paul in Princeton, honor our tradition of welcoming God’s sons and daughters from different cultures and backgrounds to hear and live the Good News of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Baptized and formed into the People of God, we continue to grow in the Apostolic Tradition of Worship, Word and Service. Worship through our participation in the Eucharist and celebration of sacraments; Word, in our commitment to Catholic identity through Scripture and catechesis; and Service, as disciples who share God’s love with all by working together for peace and justice to advance the coming of the Kingdom of God. Faith Formation A Message from John Michael McGuire September is upon us, and students and teachers are beginning to return to the world of academics. Children and young people will begin to study again, and their instructors will do their best to communicate to them knowledge and skills that will be important throughout their Mrs. Kaitlyn Mayer lives. As a society, we accept the importance of forming our minds, and Confirmation Coordinator working towards greater goals each year. The work begins in the [email protected] classroom, but is greatly aided through outside ac vi es. Teachers will assign reading (609) 524-0511 assignments, worksheets, experiments, and papers that help their students to engage important concepts. We all accept that these ac vi es are good and vital in a process of Ms. Kristi Desatnick Administrative Assistant growing and learning. Religious forma on and our lives of faith are very much the same. [email protected] Religious educa on classes, a ending Mass, and par cipa on in the sacraments build a (609) 524-0510 founda on for our faith lives. These ins ll in us the ini al framework that we need to build on each day of our lives. If reading, studying, and assignments are necessary for us to learn Office Hours about math, science, history, and grammar, in what ways can we supplement our educa on Monday to Friday and rela onship with God? There are plenty of ways! We can supplement our communal 9:00 am to 1:00 pm experiences of faith. Reading the Bible individually or as a family can help us to understand Lunch: from 12:00 to 1:15 pm. God’s word. Reading the lives of the saints and their wri ngs are sort of like a tutoring session. Those who have a ained eternal life loved God so much that they want to lead us in the same direc on. Praying together as a family is a great opportunity for parents to show their children how important their rela onship with God is to them, increasing the faith of their children. Let us pray that God will empower us to do the “homework “ of faith throughout this new school year, and that those who engage in the lifelong prac ce of learning might con nue to grow ever closer to him! Holy Father (continued from page 11) (Continued from page 2) "She was a woman discarded from society. It is important to consider this condi on -discarded -- to understand her state of mind," he said. "She senses that Jesus can free her from her sickness and from the state of marginaliza on and indignity in which she has found herself for years. In short, she knows and feels that Jesus can save her." Through the Gospel story, he said, "we, including Chris an communi es, are warned against views of women affected by prejudice and suspicion, damaging their inviolable dignity." The Gospel vision, he added, restores the truth and allows women to be viewed from "a libera ng perspec ve." "We don't know her name, but the few lines in which the Gospel describes her encounter with Jesus outline an i nerary of faith capable of restoring the truth and the greatness of each person's dignity," he said. A er touching Jesus' cloak, the woman tried to hide and expected to be reproached, the pope said. Instead, she was met with his gaze of "mercy and tenderness" that not only welcomes her, but also "acknowledges her dignity." This gaze and encouragement from Christ, he added, also is experienced by all those who feel discarded and marginalized by their own sins. The woman is not saved by touching Jesus' cloak but by his words which "consoled her, healed her and restored her to a rela onship with God and with her people," Pope Francis said. "Once again Jesus, with his merciful behavior, shows the church the path it must take to reach out to every person so that each one can be healed in body and spirit and recover his or her dignity as a child of God," the pope said.
