Lexington’ s Arts Place 161 North Mill Admission $5.00 Children Under 12 Free Performance Schedule February 2008 February 6 Downtown County Band The Downtown County Band is Wes Petzinger, on acoustic guitar and vocals, Keith Clifton on open back banjo and vocals, Dan Atkins on mandolin and vocals, and Sam McWilliams on fiddle. Wes and Keith originate from Owen County, Kentucky. Dan and Sam come from neighboring Franklin County. The DCB play music from the turn of the 20th century, as well as some contemporary original songs. They celebrate the old Jug Band music born out of the Ohio and Mississippi River ways of life, as well as blues with origins spanning from the Mississippi Delta to the Carolina Piedmont. February 13 Adam Hager Adam Hager is a talented traditional guitarist located in West Virginia. He began his interest in the guitar in his preschool years strumming on a toy guitar and singing hymns. Adam started studying under Robin Kessinger who introduced him to many fiddle tunes and techniques that helped him develop his own style. His first contest was the 2003 Vandalia Gathering Flatpick Guitar Contest in Charleston, West Virginia. Since then he has competed in many more contests in West Virginia and surrounding states, played on the radio and on stage, appeared on TV, and played gospel music in church. Currently, he is in the process of recording a CD, which he hopes to release soon. February 20 BillyBlues Billyblues began on a back porch in backwater Kentucky. Mark and Colin were thumb-picking Mississippi John Hurt songs when Mike came by with a bottle of Jim Beam and a suitcase full of harmonicas--and the band was born. The band is comprised of Colin Raitiere, bass, mandolin and vocals; Mark Lucas, resonator guitar, bass and vocals; Mike Norris, harmonica, guitar and vocals; and David White, drums. The sound they developed over the next six years and two albums took inspiration from all styles of blues--Delta to Chicago--but especially from mountainSouth traditional music, which is bluesier than the people who make categories usually notice. Songs by the likes of Blind Blake, Muddy Waters, and Jimmy Reed are an important part of what they do, but they have become known for the dark wit and weathered three-part harmonies of their originals. In the words of one reviewer, "Tom Waits Meets the Soggy Bottom Boys." February 27 Dozens of Dollars Bluegrass Band Dozens of Dollars String Band members include Philip Wakeman singing lead vocals and playing mando, fiddle & guitar; Mark Rosenthal singing lead vocals and playing guitar; John Bajandas singing backing vocals and playing the Doghouse bass; Phil Wakeman singing backing vocals and playing banjo, mando, fiddle and guitar. They mix it up with bluegrass, old time Appalachian, rock, jazz, pop and Irish....definitely based in roots music. The band’s home base is the Westport General Store, a great little restaurant/bar in the hill country. along the Ohio River.
