A nest is defined as a place of rest, retreat, or
protection. In the animal world, nests are
composed of organic material recycled or
found from the earth to suit the animals needs.
Nest architecture can be both quick and
temporary like a bird’s dwelling, or complex
and long lasting much like a termite hill. Nests
can be found with almost every species on
earth; birds, amphibians, fish, reptiles, and
mammals. As humans we construct homes as
our nest.
This concept is the inspiration for the branding
of DIRTT residential called nesTT. nesTT reflects
this concept with free material waste, fast
construction, and it’s parametric design to fit
any function for the homeowner. Homebuyers
of nesTT have the opportunity to make their
home as detailed as custom millwork,
integrated technology, and select from
finishes of paint to wood to stone. Need
something more temporary with flexibility to
change interior layouts down the road? nesTT
is designed with the same flexibility as DIRTT
with the ability to add or remove rooms to suit
the users needs.

VIGNETTES
CONCEPT
The team at Begrand Fast Design have been working on building
strong concepts for the DIRTT residential vignettes. We feel it is
very important to design vignettes that are not only
contemporary in design, but encapsulate a variety of styles.
The DIRTT aesthetic that we are used to may lean more towards
the modern, but a large majority of the residential market is still in
a very Traditional and Transitional state. Luckily for the team in
product development, these looks will be achievable with crown
moldings, baseboards, wainscoting, paneling, and the inclusion
of other architectural woodwork.
The vignettes we are developing aim to cater to numerous
aesthetics. Where the bones of each design may make for a
good vignette, we feel the ability to how the same design in
different styles is an important one. We are therefore looking to
design vignettes with more than one scheme of finishes and
style. The following is a look at some ideas and concepts we are
developing into solid vignette designs.

WINE ROOMS
We have already proven that
wine rooms work when you
introduce DIRTT into the home,
but we have only explored a
handful of solutions. Style,
storage, size, and display type
are a plenty and we think it is
important to showcase a wide
variety across a few small
vignettes.

KID’S ROOMS
Identified as one of the most in-flux
rooms in a home is a children’s room.
From a baby’s nursery, to a toddler’s
play room, to a teenager’s bedroom,
and a young adult’s hangout space (if
they’re still at home), this room will see a
lot of change. Walls can be written on,
storage can be designed however it
best suits the space, and fun colour and
super-graphics are a great way to bring
life into the room!

CLOSETS
Closets are a feature often
overlooked in a home. Closets
have evolved from just a place
to store clothes, into a show
piece in the master suite.
Between DIRTT millwork,
impregnated tiles, and freehanging elements, a DIRTT
closet would be a spectacular
addition to any home and
definitely something we should
expand into a vignette.

STAIRS
Although staircases are something
we are not yet looking to develop,
the new CNC machine opens up
many possibilities for metal
staircases. We can also pair up
with existing staircases with DIRTT
millwork to outfit any number of
custom storage configurations
under the stairs to make use of
every last square inch. These could
also be a great option with the
timber frame.

RECESSED DETAILS
We have always prided ourselves
at DIRTT with the ability to put our
walls to work for us. This is
something that has been seldom
done in residential construction.
We agree that we should utilize a
plethora of different embedded
and recessed details in the wall;
both storage and functional, to
encourage a new way of thinking
of what the walls in your home can
do.

CUSTOM MILLWORK
Custom Millwork is rarely seen in
many homes due to the
astronomical cost of implementing
any design that is not of a standard
dimension. For us, however, that is
no issue. We can create some
fantastic designs and configurations
of custom millwork simply utilizing the
tools we already have at our
disposal. It is important that we shy
away from the usual “standard”
millwork seen in most homes, so that
we can really show what DIRTT can
do.

BUILT-IN SHELVES
Following Recessed Details and
Custom Millwork, Built-In Shelving is
an important feature in a home. It
gives us the potential to turn what
could be basic furniture pieces
into architectural elements.
Combined with integrated lighting,
wrap-around corners, and DIRTT
millwork, something as simple as a
set of built-in shelves will have a
strong impact on the overall
design and message we are trying
to convey.

DOORS
90% of doors used in residential construction
are 6’-8” hollow-core hinged pivot doors,
with the occasional pair of bi-fold closet
doors. The range of doors we at DIRTT have
at our disposal could be a major gamechanger alone in residential construction.
With the finishes, hardware, sizes, and styles
that we can offer, the look and feel of any
home can change dramatically. Although it
is important that we still utilize the hinged
pivoting doors, we feel that a range of
doors including barn, centre-pivot, and the
new pocket door will make a striking
statement in the residential design market.

FOLD-AWAY BEDS
There is currently a movement in the residential
design and construction industry where we seeing
homeowners wanting to downsize considerably, but
are not willing to sacrifice the amenities and features
that they are used to. This is where fold-away
murphy beds are a huge asset. A detail that was
historically portrayed as a more temporary feature,
murphy beds can now increase the functionality of
a space; especially in a guest bedroom situation. If
we want to maximize the square footage of a
residence, rooms for guests can now be used all
year-round with the absence of guests simply by
folding the bed up into the wall and changing the
use of the space. It is important that we highlight this
with a room/vignette that can serve many functions
as many rooms.
VIGNETTES
INTERIOR GLAZING
Interior glazing is fairly new concept in residential design; ignoring
the glass-block fad. Shared living spaces are mostly open-plan,
and all other rooms are closed in and private. We can introduce
glass into the home in areas that should be closed off but do not
necessarily need to be private. Even with switch-glass
technology, we can encase bathrooms and bedrooms in
glazing, but add privacy at the flip of a switch. In areas where
natural light is hard to bring into the back of a space, even small
clerestory windows or peekaboo windows can make a whole
world of difference. We feel that the integration of glass into the
home is something that homeowners would like when they see it,
but something that would not have initially been thought of as it
is more of a commercially-thought architectural feature.
