The first was on May 10 when we as the King’s community gathered to say goodbye and to celebrate and give thanks for the service that Dr. Harry Fernhout and his wife Hilda have given to King’s. Dr. Fernhout articulated it well when he said that his time here was the perfect meld of King’s needs and his personal gifts. A president whose work was characterized by integrity, compassion and an unwavering commitment to Christian post-secondary education, Dr. Fernhout’s legacy at King's will be remembered not in bricks and mortar, but in articulating and shaping the vision of educating for shalom. It is a vision that captured the essence of what God is calling King’s to be and it has captured the community. This, coupled with the recruitment of a new generation of faculty, has created a vibrant learning environment that will continue to inspire and equip learners to bring renewal and reconciliation to every walk of life as followers of Jesus Christ, the Servant-King. In addition to this, Dr. Fernhout concluded his last year at King’s welcoming a record number of first-year students. They became part of a community of students that have given King’s the highest rating in the Maclean’s student surveys, of any university in Canada, Christian or secular. Students experience King’s as a supporting, nurturing environment with professors who care and have time for students, and an education that prepares them for lives of service in whatever they pursue. The year also marked the receipt of more than $2.6 million in donations from all over Canada, the highest amount ever towards our operating budget. Dr. Fernhout has truly been a gift that we received from God and we have been abundantly blessed by his work. The second event occurred on May 31 with the arrival of our new president Dr. Melanie Humphreys from Wheaton, Illinois to Edmonton. The appointment and arrival of Dr. Humphreys as the fourth president of King’s is another testament to God’s faithfulness. The recruitment process took well over a year, involving numerous interviews and recruitment visits spanning three continents. The search team concluded its work with a day of discernment and prayer to seek God’s leading in this important decision. The unanimity and peace the team experienced that day testified to God’s presence. A native of British Columbia’s lower mainland, Dr. Humphreys was Vice President for Student Life at LCC International University in Klaipeda, Lithuania for 10 years, and most recently served four years as Dean of Student Care & Services at Wheaton College near Chicago. Her love for students, her understanding of what King’s is about, her collaborative leadership style and her international experience are attributes that will serve King’s well as we continue to be agents of renewal and reconciliation. Over the next year Dr. Humphreys will be travelling across western Canada with the intent of meeting you. I encourage you to take advantage of these occasions to meet her and to celebrate King’s and God’s provision. The tenure of Dr. Fernhout, the coming of Dr. Humphreys: both are testament to God’s unfailing grace and faithfulness. Join me in giving thanks to God for his blessings and as we walk forward together in the confidence that the Lord who has provided for us in the past will provide for us in the future: a future for King’s that is filled with hope and promise. One of our key goals at King’s continues to be to cultivate vibrant relationships of mutual service, particularly with Christian communities, in Alberta, Canada and internationally, and… contribute to society through program development, research engagement and other activities that embody our identity as an academic community of shalom. This annual report bears witness to our efforts to fulfill this goal in the 2012-2013 fiscal and academic year. The past academic year was replete with signs of God’s rich blessings. For the second year in a row, King’s received the top ranking among all universities in Canada for overall student satisfaction, according to the Canadian Undergraduate Survey Consortium (CUSC) annual survey published in Maclean’s 2013 University Rankings. Students surveyed strongly agreed when asked about the quality of teaching they have received and if they were satisfied with their decision to attend this university. We are deeply grateful that our students provided this strong recommendation for the King’s educational experience. Other evidence of our academic community’s engagement with its mission can be found in the scholarly contributions of our faculty and students. King’s is a small but dynamic research community that engages big ideas, major issues and creative artistic works. In the 2011-2012 academic year our 48 permanent faculty members registered 216 scholarly contributions consisting of published books, chapters in books, academic articles, creative works, and conference presentations. This scholarly engagement also extends to our students; in 2011-2012 students made 29 presentations at national conferences and co-authored seven peer-reviewed academic articles, not to mention many internships and community service projects. This remarkable record is evidence of the excellent training King’s provides at the undergraduate level for the workplace and for entry into graduate or professional schools. Despite exceptional student satisfaction ratings and outstanding academic achievements, enrolment at King’s has plateaued at around 670 students for the past three years. The proliferation of low-cost applied degree programs in Alberta is no doubt a significant contributing factor. Enrolment growth and student retention continue to be strong priorities for King’s, and current indications suggest that these efforts are bearing fruit. Due to the somewhat lower than projected enrolment numbers, King’s experienced significant budgetary pressures in the 2012-2013 fiscal year. A number of austerity measures were introduced, and faculty and staff have taken several unpaid furlough days to help reduce operating budget shortfalls. On the positive side, King’s met its very aggressive target of $2.6 million in donation revenue. 4 The King’s University College 2012-13 Annual Report This represents an increase of $400,000 over the previous year, and an increase of over $800,000 in two years. These results are a testimony to the dedication and generosity of our supporting community. THANK YOU! The 2012-2013 budget projected an operating shortfall of about $365,000. I am very grateful to report that the final result was about $64,000 better than the budgeted amount. However, an operating deficit of $301,000 is not sustainable. The Board and senior leadership, as well as faculty and staff, are committed to addressing the current challenges and working toward the long-term fiscal well-being of the university college. Please pray for the board, and particularly the staff and faculty, as they deal with these challenges. A highlight of this past year was the announcement of the appointment of Dr. Melanie Humphreys as President of The King’s University College, effective July 1, 2013. The announcement was greeted with much excitement and anticipation. I am confident that Dr. Humphreys, in collaboration with the vicepresident leadership team, faculty, staff and Board of Governors, will guide King’s to new levels of institutional maturity and growth in line with our mission and vision. For the past eight years I have had the rare privilege of experiencing a very close fit of my personal sense of vocation with the institutional purposes and needs of King’s. I often felt that King’s was made for me, and I for it. While there have been stresses and strains along the way, I will look back on my years at King’s as the highlight of my career. I owe a profound debt of thanks to the founding generation and the current supporting community of King’s. Thank you for helping to build a strong institution and entrusting me with the privilege of stewarding this fine little university for these eight years. For alumna Angela Sawula, (’12, B.Ed. Secondary Education) it is an opportunity to create an adaptive teaching style rooted in developing lesson plans that students enjoy. Sawula says the Faculty of Education taught her, as a future educator, to focus on building relationships with students that foster an engaging learning environment. She states, “My education has equipped me with ideas and approaches to the many different situations that can happen in the classroom. The very practical skills I obtained at King’s have been helpful working in this challenging environment.” A curriculum and lesson planning class stands out as notable in preparing her for multidisciplinary lesson planning. “I knew I wanted to be an educator, to have the opportunity to be a role model to students, encouraging them, and building strong relationships.” Sawula came to King’s after completing a BA in History at the University of Manitoba. Originally from Sherwood Park, Alberta, King’s was a fit because she knew she wanted to get an Education degree from a small, Christian institution. Currently, Sawula teaches Grade 11 and 12 social studies in Drayton Valley, Alberta. After graduating, she did a short stint in King’s Enrolment Services Department. She started her career as an educator serving as a substitute teacher in Drayton Valley before using the skills developed at King’s to earn a full-time contract beginning in February 2013. Angela is looking forward to another year in Drayton Valley teaching social studies, coaching senior boy’s volleyball, being involved in the Student’s Union, and is possibly starting a running club at the school in the fall. I knew I wanted to be an educator, to have the opportunity to be a role model to students, encouraging them, and building strong relationships. At the end of June 2013, President Fernhout retired after serving King’s for eight years as the institution’s third president. Donations to the campaign were allocated to programs and projects that were dear to Harry including athletics, student scholarships, academic programs and capital projects. Recognizing that Harry was retiring at age 65, donors were asked for donations of $65, $650, $6,500, $65,000 and more. The campaign was a resounding success and raised over $830,000! Throughout the year we received over 130 pictures of the Uncle Harry Bobblehead from many locations across Canada, Nigeria, Congo, Zimbabwe, Ireland and several places in the United States – Harry even managed to get a picture of himself with Alberta Premier Alison Redford holding the bobblehead. We were delighted to be able to share all of these pictures with Harry at his retirement event on May 10. We are grateful for the presidential leadership that Harry Fernhout has provided King’s and for the continued support received through prayers and giving from our community. The campaign was a resounding success and raised over $830,000! 10 The King’s University College 2012-13 Annual Report A Step in Faith Over 30 years ago, a small group of visionaries dared to create what has become The King’s University College. What started with a handful of faculty, staff and students has blossomed by God’s grace and provision, and the support of His faithful people, into one of the pre-eminent Christian post-secondary institutions in Canada. And it has been flourishing. For the last five years, King’s has been a leader in its sector with top grades in both the Globe and Mail Canadian University Report and Maclean's magazine. King’s is unique in that it provides one of the most affordable, highest value Christian education experiences in Canada, but is not without its challenges. Tuition and government grants only cover a portion of the actual cost of operating the university; over 16 per cent must come from charitable donations. $2,600,000 Projected Budget Tuition $4,593,000 $2,145,000 Residence & Sales Government Donations $6,401,000 $361,000 Research & Investment So many ways to make a real difference • Annual contributions • Estate reduction while you’re living • Pledge of support • A bequest in your Will • Gifts of appreciated stock • A gift of life insurance • Designating King’s as the beneficiary of your RRSP/RRIF • Gifts in-kind • Volunteer The King’s University College 2012-13 Annual Report 11 Membership List We would like to acknowledge the following individuals and organizations who made a financial contribution to The King’s University College in 2011 & 2012.
