M any questions have been ask ed , an d som e rath er strong
com m ents have been m ade by a few m em bers over the N ovem ber
24th letter from the B oard o f D irectors to the entire N o rth
A m erican M em bership on the subject o f the 1978 C onvention to
be held in A ustralia. Som e o f these com m ents seem to hold us
responsible fo r w hat we feel will be escalating costs over the next
year and a half. It is my belief th a t you are entitled to a full
explanation o f the background an d decisions giving rise to that
letter.
In C oeur d ’A lene at o u r 1975 A n n u al M eeting, A ustralia
successfully bid to host the 1978 In tern atio n al C onvention. A t
that tim e, we all failed to take in to co n sid eratio n the im pact th at
inflation, escalating energy costs an d changes in air fare w ould
have on the cost o f that trip over the follow ing three years. As we
got deeper into these costs this p ast Fall, the B oard realized th at
by A ugust o f 1978, the cost m ight PO SSIB LY double over w hat
the M em bership expected at the tim e the delegates chose
A ustralia as the site. W hile we sincerely hope the costs will not
escalate to this degree, it is certain they will be significantly
greater than those anticipated in 1975.
Perhaps it w ould have been good politics to say n othing an d let
nature take its course, but 1 believe th a t you elect us as your
O fficers and B oard because we have the guts to represent you and
“ tell it like it is” at least in so far as we see it. W e d o n o t believe
that we w ould be fulfilling o u r responsibility to you by w aiting
until the cost got beyond the reach o f m any w ho planned to go,
only to end up with a few dozen N inety-N ines to m ake decisions
at a C onvention that affects the en tire M em bership for years to
come. W ith the foregoing problem s in m ind, the B oard felt the
M em bership should be consulted; th erefo re, we prepared the poll
and the cover letter w hich you received last N ovem ber.
W e received m any letters an d com m ents from N inety-N ines.
Some were abusive, m ost were genuine expressions o f concern
over the projected high cost. W e received new spaper ads placed
by travel agents at lower costs th a n we p rojected, but the ads
d id n ’t indicate w hat was included o r excluded. W e received
enough travel brochures to o pen o u r own travel agency on
A ustralia! M em bers asked, “ If they can d o it for $1,500.00, why
c an ’t w e?” Y ou can be assured we asked this sam e question.
H ow ever, if we look at the term s o n the back o f the brochure, the
statem ent is m ade, “ Prices q u o ted are based on M ay 31st, 1976
tariffs and rates o f exchange are su b ject to change p rio r to
d ep a rtu re .” I understand th a t an increase, in air fare did occur
prior to planned dep artu re. Since these trips are priced a year and
a half earlier than our 1978 C o n v en tio n , o u r N ovem ber letter
took into account the ad d itio n al an ticip ated air fare increases.
A lso, we m ust all realize th a t m oney needs to be budgeted to
cover the items travel brochures leave o u t. $500.00 to $700.00
w ould seem reasonable to cover these expenses.
The question was asked why we d o n ’t ch arter instead o f using
the G ro u p Inclusive T o u r (G IT ) p lan . W e checked carefully with
P an A m , Q an tas A irw ays and th e A u stralian G overnm ent and
were told th at ch arters to A u stralia are rarely approved and
virtually never done.
T here are several basic facts we sh o u ld all understand:
1. A irlines all charge the sam e fo r flights between given points.
2. Travel A gents charge exactly the sam e fo r airline tickets as
the airlines charge.
3. Travel A gents d o n ’t m ake an y th in g on you directly. T heir
p ro fit is derived from com m issions paid by airlines and hotels.
O u r trip could be done fo r less expense. We could utilize
ch eaper m otels o r hotels w ith p o o re r accom m odations, but our
experience is th at N inety-N ines w ant to stay at first class hotels
with good fo o d and acco m m o d atio n s.
The results o f the poll indicated th at nearly tw o hundred (200)
N inety-Nines are planning on going even if the costs escalate as
estim ated in o u r letter, an d over one h u n d red husbands, relatives
and friends plan to jo in them . W ith this great response, we are

This is in reply to Jo an K erw in’s N ovem ber and D ecember
Legislation In fo rm atio n colum n questions.
T he N ational T ra n sp o rta tio n S afety B oard is m ade up o f a
C h airm an , fo u r B oard m em bers, twelve field offices and 132
investigators. T he B oard is in term o d al, in th at accidents
involving highw ay, pipeline, railro a d , m arine and aviation are
investigated. T he selection o f accidents investigated depends
u p o n public interest, geographical location, fatalities, type o f
o p eratio n and the intent to learn som ething new for the interest
o f safety.
B efore I get in to the aviation are a , 1 u n d erstan d that the B oard
was present for the ferry b o at accident investigation m entioned in
the D ecem ber 99 N EW S. A d d itio n ally , taxi-cab accidents are also
investigated on a selectivity basis d u e to the fact th at there are so
m any — and again the intent here is solving the problem for
safety now and fo r the fu tu re.
C oncerning the question o f w hy th ere should be investigation
involving privately ow ned and flow n a irc ra ft and why NTSB and
FA A investigate together?
NTSB investigators are highly train ed fo r crash investigations.
They have the facilities to test p ertin en t pieces or parts, have the
flexibility to visit m an u factu rers w ith a crash problem , and can
devote 100% o f their tim e to a nitty-gritty problem (including
detailed engine, propeller an d co m p o n en t teardow ns) which will
help determ ine the probable cause. A detailed report is w ritten,
including witness statem en ts, m aps, photo g rap h s, w ritten
co m ponent teardow n rep o rts, w eather studies, autopsies or
toxicologies, which is sent o n the the N TSB B oard and then to the
F A A . As a result o f accident investigations, recom m endations
are m ade and som etim es new F A R ’s are instilled — A LL FOR
O U R SA FETY .
T he FA A is a regulatory agency an d helps the B oard in
investigations, b u t they have ad d itio n a l dem anding jo b s not
accident related. They d o investigate som e accidents that the
B oard does n o t, i.e. experim ental category and aerial applicator
a irc ra ft accidents.
I w orked as an FA A inspector fo r fo u r years, and believe me,
certification o f pilots and a irc ra ft, giving w rittens, public
com plaints, violation investigations an d litigations, and num er­
ous o th er tasks keep the w ork load u p . 1 have been with the B oard
fo r tw o years, and it’s been a real eye opener on how to try to
m ake aviation safer fo r all o f us.
A review o f T itle 49 — T ra n sp o rta tio n 800 Series will enhance
everyone’s aw areness o f w hat the N TSB does. A nd please, if you
are ever in the area o f an N TSB office, visit!
A ccording to the B o ard ’s 1975 accident fatalities statistics,
there has been a 2% reduction in fatalities from the 1974

Isn’t it am azing th a t such a sm all
p ro p o rtio n o f the citizens o f this co u n try as
the G eneral A viation com m unity can excite
so m uch governm ental a tten tio n ? N ow the
G overnm ent A ccounting O ffice is getting
into the act. T he G A O , an arm o f
C ongress, claim s th at 600 accidents due to
pilot death or incapacitatio n fro m physio­
logical or psychological causes occurred
betw een 1965-1975. They say the F .A .A .
could have possibly detected the m edical
im pairm ent in 28 percent o f these accidents
from 1972-1974 th rough ad d itio n a l screen­
ing techniques.
They contend there should be m ore
stringent medical exam inations including
resting cardiogram s, blood cholesterol
testing, an d cigarette sm oking h ab its to
evaluate all pilots. Since present ex am in a­
tions m ust rely on the honesty o f the
applicant to disclose know n o r suspected
problem s, the G A O w ants the D ep artm en t
o f T ran sp o rtatio n to try to have legislative
restrictions lifted w hich prevent the F .A .A .
from prying into other sources o f d a ta such
as m otor vehicle records. T he G A O feels
w ith this in fo rm atio n , 22,900 active airm en
w ho could be potential safety problem s
w ould be detected.
T his gives us a m ath problem : 600
accidents in 10 years averages 60 per year;
28 percent o f 120 (1972-1974) gives us the
staggering to tal o f 33.6 accidents, o r 16.8
per year w hich “ could possibly” have been
prevented. F or this we should be spied
upon? F o r this o u r taxes should be
increased to cover costs o f m edical spies?
F o r this we should bear the added costs o f
E C G ’s, au d io m etric hearing tests and
possibly chest X -rays? Shades o f O rw ell’s

flying a C essna 185 three miles west of
hom e base, N ipaw in, Saskatchew an. The
investigation is not com plete, b ut structural
failure is th o u g h t to be the cause o f the
disaster.

A m id-air collision in 1969 betw een a
student pilot, R obert C arey, in a P iper
Cherokee 140, and A llegheny A irlines
Flight 853, a D C-9, gave rise to som e
interesting theories ab o u t flight school
liability and cloud heights in an op in io n by
the U .S. C o u rt o f A ppeals (7th C ircu it) in
1974.
Carey had taken o ff from B rookside
A irpark, Indiana, on a solo cro ss-co u n try
flight, flying VFR with its p ro h ib itio n
against flying any closer th an 500 feet from
the base o f any clouds. A llegheny Flight
853 was IFR and descending to land at
nearby Indianapolis when th e collision
occurred at an altitude o f ap p ro x im ately
3600 feet M SL. B oth planes crash ed and
there were no survivors.
Allegheny A irlines and G E C C Leasing
C orpo ration (w hich ow ned one o f the
DC-9’s engines) bro u g h t this law suit
against the p ilo t’s estate, F o rth C o rp o ra ­
tion which ow ned the C herokee, B rookside
C orporation (the p arent c o rp o ra tio n o f
F orth), and the U nited States (because o f
the involvem ent o f federal con tro llers). T he
lower court fo un d fo r the d e fe n d a n ts, due
to the supposed co n trib u to ry negligence o f
the A llegheny crew in th at they: (1) did not
see the C herokee; (2) failed to give it the
right o f way when it app ro ached fro m the
right o f the DC-9, and (3) descended at an
excessive rate such th at it could n o t be
slowed to the required descent ra te o f 500
feet per m inute when 1000 feet above its
assigned altitude o f 2500 feet.
In order to m ake a d eterm in atio n as to
the duty o f the flight crew o f 853 to see and
give way to the C herokee, the c o u rt h ad to
first decide if C arey was flying th e required
500 feet below the base o f the clo u d s. If he
was not the crew could n o t have been
expected to see him as they b ro k e o u t o f the
cloud layer. T here was substan tial testim o ­
ny as to the height o f the cloud bases,
placing them anyw here from 3500 feet to
4200 feet. T he appellate c o u rt fo u n d th a t
evidence was sufficient to su p p o rt A lle­
gheny’s contention that C arey w as LESS
than 500 feet from the clouds o r p erh ap s
even IN the clouds. T h at c o u rt overruled
the lower co u rt’s finding on th a t p o in t.
Then having once decided the A llegheny
crew could not have seen the C h erokee
because o f his close proxim ity to the
clouds, the appellate court then d eterm ined
that w hether o r not A llegheny w as descend­
ing at an excessive rate was im m aterial,
because the crew w ould no t have been able
to see Carey under any circum stances. T hus
853’s rate o f descent had no th in g to d o with
the cause o f the collision.
A llegheny A irlines claim ed th a t b o th the
pilot, C arey, and F orth C o rp o ra tio n , as
ow ner o f the airplan e, were responsible for
the accident, on the ra th e r u n u su al basis
(fo r airp lan e accidents) th at the tw o were
engaged in a “ jo in t en terp rise” . A s a
general rule, such allegations are usually
m ade w hen tw o or m ore people have jo in ed
together in a p roject an d are p u rsuing it
together. T he essential req u irem en ts o f a
jo in t enterprise are: (1) a co m m u n ity o f
interest in the object an d p u rp o se o f the
u ndertak in g ; (2) an equal right to direct an d
govern the co n d u ct o f the o th e r p articip an t
in respect to th a t purpose; an d (3) a
c o n tract, either expressed o r im plied, as to
th at purpose. A llegheny m ade its case here
by alleging th a t the jo in t enterprise
u n d ertak en by F o rth and C arey was the
obtaining o f a private p ilo t’s license for
C arey, an d th a t the specific flight resulting
in the m id-air collision involved the jo in t
e ffo rts o f b o th in fu rth eran ce o f their
com m on goal.
C arey ’s interest was obviously his p er­
sonal convenience and desire to fly, while
F o rth ’s interest in C arey ’s success was
reflected in the ad d itio n al business to be
derived from C arey as a pilot an d o th er
p otential pilots w ho m ight be draw n to
B rookside fo r training. Even m ore im p o rt­
a n t, how ever, was the fact th a t F o rth ’s
existence as a flight school depended in part
on the success o f C arey an d o th er student
pilots in o b taining their p riv ate p ilo t’s
license o n their first attem p t.
T he requirem ent o f equal right o f control
was fo u n d by stating th a t C arey had
co n tro l over the goal o f o b tain in g his
private p ilo t’s license in th at he alone had
the pow er to determ ine his rate o f progress
by the frequency an d tim ing o f his flying,
an d F o rth had co n trol over C arey w hich
em an ated from the in stru cto r-stu d en t rela­
tionship. In ad d itio n , F o rth w as u n d er an
affirm ativ e obligation u n d er the F A R ’s to
supervise an d co n tro l all facets o f C arey ’s
training.
T he “ c o n tra c t” was satisfied by the
conduct betw een F o rth and C arey , as well
as the express agreem ent entered into
betw een them . T h erefo re, the appellate
co u rt held th a t such a theory o f jo in t
enterprise m ight be successful fo r Alle­
gheny.
T he co u rt also found th a t the absentee
ow ner could be held responsible fo r the
careless an d reckless o p eratio n o f his
airc ra ft by an o th er. T hus the issue o f jo in t
enterprise A N D o f absentee ow ner liability
should have been subm itted to the ju ry as
against C arey ’s estate an d F o rth C o rp o ra ­
tio n . The co u rt reversed the decision for
those d efen d an ts an d sent the case back to
the low er co u rt fo r a new trial.

A n experience long to be cherished was
the dedication and hanging o f a votive
model airplane o f A m elia E a rh a rt’s L o ck ­
heed Vega in which she becam e th e first
w oman to solo the A tlantic. T h e votive
airplanes are sym bols o f pray er given by
individual airlines in the sam e sp irit th a t
sailors o f old, carved and gave m odel ships
to hang in the churches o f E u ro p e. Special
prayers are offered each Sunday.
In the center o f the C hapel hangs the
W right Flyer, m odel o f th e first heavierthan-air plane to fly on D ecem ber 17, 1903.

was an E piscopal Bishop, T he Rev. M ilton
W right, w ho encouraged his sons w ith th eir

Then she will keep one copy fo r the
sectional scrapbook an d fo rw ard the

A 66 Program

T he C entral Illinois C h ap ter o f the 99s
has had a 66 pro g ram fo r stu d en t pilots fo r
m any years.
A few years ago this p ro g ram was
separated from the duties o f the m em ber­
ship ch airm an , and a 66 ch airm an was
established. It has been the d u ty o f this
chairm an to keep a list o f active 66 pilots.
She corresponds w ith them fro m tim e to
tim e, giving encouragem ent an d any help
she may render.
E ach 66 is requested to fill o u t a form
w hich serves as a good b ack g ro u n d source
for the ch ap te r an d also serves as a record
o f her atten d an ce at o u r m eetings. She is
then presented with a m em bership card th a t
we have had printed w hich identifies her as
a m em ber in good standing o f th e C en tral
Illinois 66s.
T he follow ing five guidelines are used in
o u r program :
1. A prospective 66 m em ber should be an
active fem ale student pilot cu rren tly flying
an d p referable w ith 6 h ours solo tim e.
2. She should be invited by a 99 to a
regular ch ap te r m eeting and given tim e,
place an d in fo rm atio n concerning m eeting.
3. T he 66 P ro g ram should be fully
explained as well as in fo rm atio n on the 99s.
4. T he C en tral Illinois C h a p te r requests
$2.50 fo r the new sletter cost an d this
enables the 66 to receive the new sletter for
one calen d ar year.
5. She will be presented w ith a 66
m em bership card an d may a tten d fu tu re 99
meetings an d expect en couragem ent and
fellow ship from her sister pilots.
A N inety-N ine “ sp o n so r” v olunteers to
help an d encourage “ h er” 66 in all flying
activities leading to her o b taining her
license. T he 66 may particip ate in all o f our
activities except she may not hold office or
vote, an d o f course she is no t recognized by

It all began several years ago — the
decision to not stay hom e alo n e, b u t to hide
the fear surrounding you as the m an o f the
house flits you ab o u t th e sky in an
obviously unsafe cloth-covered flying m a­
chine. It really isn’t the up-in -th e-air flying
flat-stuff th a t’s so spooky; it’s the com ing
up and the going dow n. F o rtu n a te ly , there
are fo u r h ours o f w h at’s called h an g ar
flying or socializing fo r every one h o u r o f
actual flying. Y ou listen to d ifferen t pilot
types — older, bolder, younger — all w ith a
penchant for telling ab o u t th eir n arro w
escapes and ground loops. O ne c a n ’t help
but develop a sense o f tim ing — to be in the
bathroom w henever a pilot asks, “ W ho
w ants to ride aro u n d the p a tc h ? ” A book
dealing w ith fear m ight be the answ er, so
. . .“ T he Fear o f Flying” was acq u ired .
Subject m atter was not applicable to local
problem .
Little by darn little, you begin to place all
your weight on your seat in the plane. You
find a few airplane drivers th a t instill
confidence. By chance, a couple o f these
were gals. O ccasionally you n o te these tw o
having a palaver about flying m edicine here
o r there and an o dd num ber is o v erh eard .
W hat the heck is a 99er? Lesson #1: T h e
“ e r” is a “ z” . A quick exp lan atio n o f the
99z and you m arvel at the w hole w o n d erfu l
concept.
N ow, you m ust realize th at th e th o u g h t
th at you, too, could ever be one o f these
h asn’t even flitted into yo u r p re-scripted
life pattern. T o even hold a stick o r a wheel
or push a rudder pedal was surely fo r o th er
people — not you!
T hen cam e the day a 49 Zi places you in
the fro n t seat o f an A eronca C h a m p . Y ou
fly fairly flat, do low buzz jo b s on p astu res
and interesting geographical terrain in clu d ­
ing a low pass inspection o f an a b a n d o n ed
strip. This is the greatest. M aybe a lesson
o r tw o w ould help. . .just enough to get a
plane on the ground.
You sneak aro u n d — n o t telling a b o u t
your 180 degree turn in a ttitu d e. D o n ’t tell
the hubby — surprise him ! Y eh, th a t’s it.
Then to o , if y o u ’re to o u n c o o rd in ate d to
drive an airplane, you need n o t explain.
Six, seven, eight hours. A irp o rt bum s are
aware o f your endeavor, bu t still keep it a
secret from your hubby. T hen, the solo day
comes! Y ou ca n ’t be in the b a th ro o m an d
go around the patch at the sam e tim e. It’s
up to you. . .
O f course you hear m ore now a b o u t the
“ N inety-ninz” . P an cak e b reak fasts. Sec­
tional C onventions, an A lask a trip for
D orothy. Y ou get lots o f encouragem ent
an d ju s t a plain push now to keep going.
You really are enjoying yourself. But will
you ever be skillful enough to get a license?
T u rn s aro u n d a p o in t, entering speeds fo r
stalls. Stalls! O h gad, did all those 99z have
to go th ro u g h this? N ight flying, cross
country. . .

T his season was full o f visitors in
B om bay. W e received w ith g reat pleasure
Margaret Kentley, 99 from Australia, who
spent three days in B om bay on her way
from A ustralia to T eh ran .
Mohini Shroff took tim e o ff from w ork
to show her aro u n d tow n, an d to help
arran g e her o th er sightseeing. D r. & Mrs.
B hajekar hosted her to a typical Indian
“ T h a li” d inner, an d th ereafter to ok her to
a soiree o f Indian classical vocal m usic at
the hom e o f a close friend, C a p t. K arnik,
the C h ief H a rb o u r P ilot o f the B om bay
P o rt T ru st. M argaret had earlier visited
Delhi an d A gra, w here she enjoyed the
ancient m onum ents, including the Taj
M ahal, an d w atched Indian d ancing. The
next day, Rabia and Sadiq Futehally had
her visit them a t their hom e an d thence to
d in n er at the O tte r’s C lub, a place on the
beach u n d er the palm s. H er visit to
B om bay was w ound o ff by a visit the next
day to B om bay’s oldest section, a typical
oriental b azaar where an tiq u es (some
priceless) are sold in heaps!
T he next visitor was Helene Thompson
from Kittyhawk Chapter, N .C . a fter she
had finished w ith the m ost u nusual project
o f spending a week in the in terio r o f India
in a typical village, living, dressing, eating
an d learning to think like a villager! She
had a lot o f interesting an d instructive
stories to tell. M ohini S h ro ff was glad to
have her stay with her while in Bom bay.
R abia Futehally had her over fo r dinner
an d ju s t sitting and chatting a n d m eeting
the fam ily, an d one S atu rd ay Sadiq was
able to fly her at the B om bay Flying C lub in
th eir P ip er Super C ub, so th a t H elene could
have a b ird ’s eye view o f o u r beautiful
B om bay. The next day M o h in i’s sister
prepared a fabulous d inner fo r H elene, to
be eaten in Indian style w ith fingers, and
later M r. N erukar o f R aiji & C o. took her
on an evening to u r o f the city.
T he Indian N inety-N ines are busy pre­
paring for the visit by the A m ericans in
F ebru ary . It will be thrilling to see old
friends again an d return in som e m easure
the hospitality we so m uch enjoyed in the
States. W e have lots to show you in our
cou n try ; a lot th a t is historic, artistic,
cu ltu ral and m odern technologically too.

Sandra S im m on s
A t first glance this petite m o th er o f four hardly looks like your
typical airline pilot. But she is an d it h a sn ’t been all peaches and
cream getting there. Sandra Sim m ons, Dallas Chapter, was b o rn ,
July 14, 1941, in P rescott, A rizo n a, o rp h an ed at the age o f 4 and
brought up on her gran d p aren ts farm in A lm a, A rkansas. S an d ra
has always been a doer tho u g h . In a d d itio n to her flying career,
Sandra is an accom plished sculptress, snow skis, plays the p iano
(again expertly) an d on and on. W ith the aide o f the W ar
O rphans Bill (her fath er w as killed at G uadalcanal an d her
m other was killed a couple years later in an autom obile accident)
and w orking after class S an d ra spent her F reshm an year at the
U niversity o f A rkansas. The follow ing sum m er S andra cam e to
D allas for a sum m er jo b w here she m et H aro ld Sim m ons, an
up-and-com ing fellow from G o ld en , T exas. H aro ld and Sandra
were m arried an d S an d ra assum ed the new responsibilities o f wife
an d m other (H aro ld had tw o d au g h ters ages 8 and 5). Enough?
N ot fo r S andra, she enrolled in S o u th ern M ethodist University
determ ined to get her degree. H er fam ily c o u ld n ’t see any reason
fo r her to continue her ed ucation b u t in the long run it was to pay
off.
A n earlier business venture her hu sb an d had entered into
pro m p ted them to move to W aco w here on a pleasure trip in a

light plane with som e friends S an d ra got “ h o o k e d .” W hen she
first approached H arold w ith the idea sh e’d like to learn to fly his
reaction was extrem ely negative. A m ong o th er things he said
. .if anyone learns to fly, first it will be m e!!” (N ot yet initiated
to the creed o f a 49'/2er.) H ow ever, he finally agreed th a t if she
could get the financing she could learn to fly. W ell not only did
she learn to fly but over a five y ear sp an S an d ra obtained ratings
as P rivate, M ulti-Engine, In stru m en t, C om m ercial, In stru cto r,
C itation Type R ating, A ir T ra n sp o rt P ilo t, Flight Engineer an d
C o-Pilot Boeing 727.
S andra eventually got H aro ld interested in flying and although
his ratings are not as num erous as S a n d ra ’s he holds a pretty
bright candle o f his own in the av iatio n field.
As their business grew S andra becam e com pany pilot starting
with light single and m ulti-engine a irc ra ft and progressing u p to
the com pany ow ned C itation. Flying as co rp o rate pilot w ould
have been enough for a lot o f people (m ale or fem ale). But
S andra w anted a career in aviatio n o f her ow n, one not quite so
dependent upon her h u sb an d ’s business interest. This caused
quite a conflict w ithin the fam ily b u t all are now in agreem ent
that each person is entitled to th eir ow n career. As a m atter o f
fact A ndrea an d Sarena, the tw o d au g h ters still at hom e, thin k it
is great th at while m ost o f their frie n d s’ m o th ers are at hom e their
m other is “ up in the a ir .”
Now S andra really started in earn est. She set herself up a
schedule o f w hat she w anted to accom plish an d a time span to do
it all in. S andra becam e the first w om an ever to go thro u g h the
A m erican A irlines School fo r a C ita tio n Type R ating and at the
sam e tim e received her A T P ratin g . She then enrolled in B ran iff
E ducation Systems Flight E ngineer C o u rse. W hile attending the
Flight E ngineer’s C ourse S an d ra sub m itted her application for
em ploym ent to B raniff In tern atio n a l. It was at this tim e th a t her
fam ily’s question o f “ W hy?” w as answ ered and her earlier
persistence in getting her degree m ade the struggle truly
w orthw hile. The first question asked by her prospective em ployer
was, “ Do you have a college deg ree?” L ittle did she know earlier
how im portant th at degree was to be.
O n A ugust 9, 1973 S andra finished the m am m oth project sh e’s
form ulated for herself with the receipt o f her Flight-Engineer
T urbo-Jet Pow ered License. T he fuel crisis had ju st hit and the

fu tu re d id n ’t look to o good. B ut luck was w ith her and while
o th er airlines were furloughing p ersonnel, B ran iff was hiring and
S andra becam e their first fem ale airline pilot on M arch 19, 1974.
A lthough S andra is presently occupying the Second O fficer’s
position, in N ovem ber 1974 she com pleted C o-P ilot check out on
the Boeing 727.
A fter 3 years, based everyw here except her hom e here in
D allas, she still loves her jo b and intends to continue on through
“ C ap tain and until the m an d ato ry retirem ent age o f sixty.” Very
recently her bid to be based in D allas was approved and although
it m eans a little less seniority and a longer period before
progressing past Second O fficer she is glad to be back hom e
w here she can devote m ore o f her free tim e to her family.
In her own w ords “ I t’s a trem endous jo b . N o pay
discrim ination. I ’ve been very well received. I feel my fellow
pilots are very fair to me. We respect each o th e r.” She also adds,
“ I’ve m ade it because o f them an d n o t in spite o f th e m .” S andra
also claim s one o f the added side benefits her jo b has had is the
im proved fa th e r/d a u g h te r relatio n sh ip w ithin her own fam ily
an d in the fam ilies o f fellow pilots “ as they ap p ro ach with excited
grins a fte r finding out their d au g h ters hope to join them one day
as airline p ilo ts.” O n occasion she claim s she feels like “ a m other
h en ” as she watches flight a tte n d an ts w ho have approved her
w anting to know m ore a b o u t flying go on to start their own
program s fo r a m ore extensive career in aviation. As you may
have guessed by now S andra believes th a t “ anything is possible if
you m ake it h a p p e n .” But m ost o f all th a t “ It was all w orth it!”
S andra jo in ed the N inety-N ines in Ja n u a ry 1971 shortly after
her retu rn to D allas. A lthough her schedule is full she has held
c h ap te r offices and has been extrem ely supportive o f the 99s in
all areas. She is p articularly suited to the jo b o f A erospace
E ducation chairw om an. She has told her story and that o f the
N inety-N ines to everyone w ho is interested from elem entary
schools to Z o n ta L uncheons. S an d ra has flow n in tw o A W T A R ’s
and p articipated (either in p lan n in g , flying, or ju st plain hard
w ork) in various local activities. W e in D allas are happy S andra is
a m em ber o f the N inety-N ines an d o u r C h ap ter. She is a good
exam ple o f how w om en can achieve success in the aviation
com m unity and willingly helps a n y o n e else w ho would like to do
the sam e.

Jerrie C o b b , a devout C h ristian w ho
believes in living an d sharing her fa ith in
G o d , uses her exceptional ability as a pilot
to bring help and hope to prim itive,

T he A m azo n , an area larger th a n the
U nited S tates, is an unforgiving en v iro n ­
m ent. R ainfall averages 300 inches yearly.
T he A m azon River w ith its 1100 m ajo r
trib u taries create a vast inland sea w ith in a
trackless, im penetrable jungle w here m a n is
tolerated by th e barest m argin. M a ln u tri­
tio n , floods, snakebite, m alaria a n d oth er
diseases tak e a fearfu l toll; m an seldom
survives beyond the age o f 40. B ut this is
w here you will find Jerrie C o b b , here in this
m ost forb id d in g co rn er o f the e a rth , flying

Back in 1964, Jerrie resigned her p o sitio n
as an executive a n d chief test pilo t for
Rockwell In te rn atio n al’s A ero C o m m an d er
D ivision in O k lah o m a C ity, having p u t
A ero C o m m an d er o n the m ap by setting
w o rld ’s records in distance, speed and
altitu d e. M eanw hile, she h ad qu alified fo r
space travel, the first w om an to successfully
com plete an d pass the N atio n al A v iation
a n d Space A d m in istra tio n ’s a s tro n a u t test­
ing p ro g ram . B ut Jerrie chose to tu rn her
back on fam e an d fo rtu n e, an d use the one
skill she possessed in the nam e o f G od for
the b etterm ent o f her fellow m an.
Flying is the nam e o f the gam e. W ithout
it, n one o f Je rrie’s astonishing accom plish­
m ents w ould be possible. But this is not the
w hole story. F o r Jerrie brings to those w ho
need help as badly as any people on earth
m edical assistance for the sick, seeds to
p lant fo r the hungry, speaking quietly,
gently o f a G od w ho cares and shares with
u nfailing love. T he p ro o f: she is there,
w hether it is dow n on her han ds and knees,
g rubbing aro u n d in flood plains, exposed
during the so-called dry season, teaching
the Indians how to p lant an d harvest rice,
the one cro p th at grows well in the
A m azon, tending the ill w ith m odern
m edicine, o r talking o f G o d ’s eternal truths
w ith dow n-hom e com m on courtesy and
concern.
D uring these years o f living w hat Jerrie
calls, “ A useful life ,” she has supported
herself an d T he Bird, while thoughtful
people in Je rrie ’s hom e state o f O klahom a
created T h e Jerrie C obb F o u n d atio n to
lend a h an d in this m ost w orthy extension
tow ard m a n ’s finest hour.
“ Every penny, nickle, dim e and dollar
from th e fo u n d a tio n ,” Jerrie explains,
“ goes to w ard buying seeds and medicines
fo r th e Indians. I have alw ays believed in
su p p o rtin g m yself, and insist T he Bird does
the sam e. So w hen we get b ro k e, we go do
aerial surveys in the countries th a t encom ­
pass the A m azon, o r we go to B ogota or

R ecognition has com e o ften to this
well-directed and courageous w om an. But
perhaps the m ost m eaningful recognition
arrives when m inds an d hearts consider a
w om an w ith an ex trao rd in ary talen t w ho
chose n o t to exploit it, bu t ra th e r to use it in
a cause th a t is larger than self.
Betty Wright, the author o f this article,
normally resides in El Paso, TX. Her
fam ily also spends time in Florida where
they are neighbors o f Jerrie Cobb.
Betty is part o f a flying family. Her
daughter, Betsy, received a lot o f help from
99s when she was learning to fly and getting
started, both in Texas and Arizona. Betsy,
now 20, flies pipelines fo r oil companies
out o f Houston. A nd last summer, Betty
herself learned to fly when Jerrie Cobb "in
her spare tim e” taught her to fly in a 1941
J-3 Piper Cub.

Knowing how badly these people need help,
I could never use a cent o f the fo u n d a tio n ’s
money for me or T he B ird .”
T o keep in touch w ith people w ho assist
the fo u n d atio n , Jerrie types a letter o n her
activities when she hits a civilized waystation, has the letter copied, w rites a
personal note on the bottom o f each letter,
types the envelopes, sticks on the stam ps
and sends the message along. It is a
pow erful message:
“ Last night 1 sat with the chief o f this
Ticuna Indian village as he lay dying from
meningitis. M y medicines could n o t help
him. He was a fine, young leader o f his
people. T hrough o u r effo rts here, he had
taught his people to feed them selves, trad e
rice with neighboring tribes fo r wild gam e.
H e had learned th at he did not have to live
in fear o f any m an, did not have to fear
death, his spirit to be eaten by som e huge
snake or left to roam the jungle forever; he
understood G o d ’s prom ise o f life everlast­
ing.
“ Everytim e he could find the stren g th he
would ask me about G od. In m y lim ited
Ticuna I told him G od loved him , cared for
him and w ould carry him to H is eternal
resting place. H e died peacefully.
“ It all seemed so u n fair. H e w as a victim
o f a white m a n ’s disease. O ften I w onder
why I am here. I know I ca n ’t save 6 m illion
Indians. Som etim es when I am lying in my
ham m ock in som e Indian village, I get so
down and out. But the next day th e sun
does shine, I get up into the air, a n d , yes,
m any are dying, m any are su fferin g , but
som e are living because I am here. . . ”
A nd so, Jerrie goes her w ay, living on a
wing and a p rayer, not know ing fro m one
night to the next w here she will lay her
head, stretching a do llar into infinity:
during one year alone, Jerrie su p p o rted
15,000 Indians on $1200 from the fo u n d a ­
tio n . But as she will tell you, “ Shoe strings
for tying um bilical cords are c h e a p ;” and
she will tell you this w ith the lively blue eyes
and the wide smile th at accom panies the joy
o f serving G od, the pleasure th a t goes with
the courageous kind o f flying th a t m akes
this w orld a b etter place in w hich to live.
T h ro u g h o u t the A m azon, T h e Bird is a
sym bol o f hope in tim es o f tro u b le , not
only fo r the Indians, b u t fo r o th e r planes
th at may have lost their w ay over a
geography alm ost as rem ote as the m oon.
Jerrie has gained a rep u tatio n fo r finding
dow ned a irc ra ft w hen others have given up
a n d gone hom e. W ith a particularly
perceptive feel fo r w ind an d w eath er, with
eyes so sh arp p erhaps their equal is rare,
she has com e to know this w orld a p a rt
unlike any oth er pilot.
Jerrie is a credit to the h u m an race; and
in a like fashion, she is a credit to the
profession o f aviation in the tra d itio n of
99’s fo u n d er A m elia E a rh a rt w ho is
rem em bered alw ays for her ch arity an d love
o f m ankind.
M any distinguished h o n o rs have been
bestow ed on Jerrie, b o th in this cou n try
and a b ro a d . She was the recipient o f the

L indbergh in 1927 will be issued M ay 20,
1977.
A giant effo rt is now being m ade to pay
trib u te to the m an w hose epic flight was the
key th at opened up tran s-A tlan tic aviation
as we know it today. T he D o b rescu ’s are
the C o-C hairm en fo r the p rep aratio n o f the
official cachet for the M ay 2 0 /2 1 , 1977
celebration. The celebration itself, which
was originally planned for a one day event
at Roosevelt Field (from w hich L indbergh
to ok off) has now grow n to a five day event
involving all o f Long Island. T h e them e,
“ L ong Island, the C rad le o f A v iatio n ” will
include a coord in ated A ir A rm a d a th a t will
encircle all o f L ong Island by A ntiq u ers,
Silver W ings, A rm y, N avy and M arine
C o rp s, airlines, etc. N B C ’s T o d ay Show
will d o a docu m en tary on all the efforts
being p u t fo rth for this event to be show n
nationally before the celebration.
T he celebration will be concluded w ith a
fly-by at the P aris A ir Show on Ju n e 4 by
the sam e Ryan doing the fly-by at
Roosevelt Field on M ay 20, co m m em or­
ating L in d b erg h ’s successful tran s-A tlantic
flight. T he Ryan will th ereafter be exhibited
at the U .S . Pavillion at the show .

m em bers to fly every m o n th unless they had

w eather, m echanical problem s, etc.) fo r not
doing so. N ow, fo r those w ho wish to jo in
in, a 99 cents do n atio n is m ade to the
“ C hicken P o t” each m o n th a m em ber has
neglected to fly fo r less th a n “ h o n e st”
reasons. T he response has been am azing.

C ourse held in S ask ato o n , N ovem ber
18-20. The A ir D ivision o f E m ergency
M easures O rganization held the course,
w hich was attended by 36 p ilots. It seems
the Search & Rescue (M ilitary) have a
shortage o f trained spotters and are willing
to train som e civilian pilots in this capacity.
T his course was a “ first” and now th a t the
A ir Division have the necessary slide
presentation and instructions they intend to
sponsor classes in the 10 divisions o f the
organizations.

is to o technical to describe, b u t should be
on everyone’s list o f subjects you should
know m ore ab o u t. N adine spoke a b o u t the
need for trained spotters an d gave a
detailed account o f the m ain requirem ents
needed for the jo b .

Participate in FAA Experiment
T he Civil A erom edical In stitu te o f the
FA A is investigating the 8 h o u r b ottle-toth ro ttle syndrom e on pilot skills. The
experim ent attem p ts to sim ulate situations
in which pilots may be involved in drinking
socially during the evening, sleep perhaps
less th an the usual am o u n t, and then get up
and fly the next day. F our O k lah o m a 99s
are am ong the gro u p o f pilot volunteers
w ho have been attending the three required
fo u r-h o u r training sessions on the com plex
tasks they will be asked to p erfo rm when
the actual experim ents get u n d er way early
in F ebruary.
Space City 99s are getting into full swing
setting u p their Las Vegas night to be held
on A pril 23 at the R am ada Inn at H obby
airp o rt in H ou sto n . It has been a great
success for Space City and lots o f fun for
all w ho atten d . This year should be even
m ore successful since Space C ity is m aking
their own tables with the help o f their
4 9 ‘/2ers.
Space City’s Evie Tumlin has been
teaching in the A erodynam ics P ro g ram at
Sterling High School in H o u sto n w here
they have purchased a $30,000 Singer Link
T rain e r for the kiddies to “ p la y ” w ith.
Ma.vbelle Fletcher introduced a g ro u p o f
Boy Scouts to flying, 25 o f them , by taking
them all on in tro d u cto ry flights.
Joan Alyea, Spanish Peaks Chapter,
loaned a big basem ent floor to 66s planning
a dual cross-country trip from P ueblo,
C o lo rad o , to F lorida — lots o f sectionals
needed — and found it an excellent way to
brush up skills.
Funds from the Sidney H all M em orial
Fund (Sidney was late fath er o f Spanish
Peaks C h airm an , Jo an A lyea) were recently
used to buy aviation books for tw o local
m iddle school libraries, the P u eb lo R egion­
al L ibrary and a d o n atio n to the 99s library.

The Florida Goldcoast Chapter is sp o n ­

C om m unity College (South) o n M arch 22,
1977 in cooperation w ith the F A A M iam i
G A D O office.
In the near future Memphis Chapter will
have for sale the poem “ H igh F lig h t” (w ith
o r w ithout 99 logo) suitable fo r fram ing.
A lso available in a lim ited n u m b er will be a
desk plaque with the poem (w ith o r w ithout
99 logo).
Memphis Scouts Earn Aviation Badge
Memphis 99 Jean McCarthy is also a
cadette G irl Scout L eader. She has w orked
with troops earning the aviation badge in
the past, but this year her “ o w n ” tro u p
earned it. T he girls studied the h istory o f
aviation, safety regulations, m ade m odels,
toured M em phis aviation facilities and
learned to read aeronautical ch arts u n d er
ground instructor Je a n ’s leadership. T he
only problem which cro p p ed up cam e
ab o u t when Jean took the girls to sit in a
plane while she explained the co m p o n en ts
o f an aircraft, the controls an d flight
instrum ents. H er own plane had been
rented, so she asked an FBO if she could
‘b o rro w ’ a plane fo r her scout g ro u n d
school. T o her surprise, Je an , accustom ed
m ore to 150’s and 140’s, fo u n d herself
‘helpfully’ provided w ith a L ear Jet! You
never saw such a fum bling g ro u n d in­
structor! The scouts, how ever, w ere de­
lighted with the jet, and Je an finally was
able to identify all the in stru m en ts and
controls to their satisfaction.

o f F .A .A . A cadem y team s, th e ch ap ter
m em bers have also w ritten to C alifo rn ia
G ov. Brow n asking him to rea p p o in t the
m em bers o f the State B oard o f A eronautics
w hose term s have expired. All are aviation
o riented an d w ell-qualified to serve.

First Canadians Take Children
For Night Flight
O n D ecem ber 17th, u n d er th e chairm an­
ship o f Adele Fogle, th e First Canadian
Chapter took tw enty-eight children flying
over T o ro n to for a C h ristm as lights night
flight. D raw n from B attalion 1427 o f the
C hristian Service B rigade, the boys were a
g ro u p from the inner-city an d to insure
fem inine rep resen tatio n , som e o f their
sisters were invited, to o .
A fter the flight, we served them hot
dogs, drinks, and h o m e-m ade cookies. The
cookies, courtesy o f several o f th e m em bers
were a notable success. E ach child was
presented with a t-shirt saying th a t he o r she
had flown with the N inety-N ines and
everybody — pilot an d passenger — had a
m arvelous time.

L ate in 1963, som e friends o f o u r late
m em ber Rita Hart alerted her the collection
was in the M ichael F u rn itu re Store and
Sw ap Shop. O ver the next 12 years several
a ttem p ts to acquire the collection were
m ade. W hen he retired, M r. M ichael finally
set a price. C h airm an Barbara Goetz o f the
Sacramento Valley Chapter urged her
g ro u p to purchase the collection.
T he purchase becam e a ‘civic a ff a ir’,
w ith the airp o rt crow ded w ith tow nspeople,
99s and fam ilies. T he entire valley was
covered w ith fog, but 22 99s were at the
event, including Governor Verna West.
Several carloads o f S acram en to Valley
C h a p ter m em bers drove in, in o rd er to
tra n sp o rt the purchased collection.

Mount Diablo Chapter Ninety-Nines had
their Jan u ary fly-in to S acram en to Execu­
tive A irp o rt. They were m et there by six o f
the Sacram ento 99s an d a guest. A great
tim e was had by all an d the food was
excellent.
San Diego 99s Plan PAR
San Diego 99s are already planning the
1977 Pacific Air Race. It will be in early
O cto b er and will follow th e ro u te o f their

Lake Erie Pilot o f the Year
Lake Erie Chapter’s P ilot-o f-th e-Y ear
for 1977 is Jane Hubben, a vivacious, w itty
gal w ho know s how to enjoy life while
obtaining her goals. She began her flying in
1972 from a grass strip in C o rn in g , New
York w here her instructor w as, as she tells
it, an “ old b arn sto rm er” w hose flying was
second nature to him .
A fter m oving to C leveland in 1974, she
found an active flying club a t C u y ah o g a
C ounty A irport an d began flying seriously

five days in W ash ., D .C ., as a B oard

president o f the W hirly G irls. It w asn ’t all
business, how ever, as she sto p p ed over in
D enver, C o lo ra d o to stay w ith friends and
play golf.

again. She got her instrum en t ratin g ,
com m ercial and ground school in stru c to r’s
ratings, and then decided to get her own
plane again. She found a C essna Skylane
182 w hich seemed in perfect c o n d itio n but
it turned out to be quite the o pp o site. The
plane had som e serious problem s a n d the
whole engine had to be to rn d o w n . U nder
supervision from her m echanic, Jan e
pitched in to help, becom ing a m echanicapprentice. She laughs as she rem em bers
how she very carefully kept each n u t, bolt
and screw in separate piles so they could
easily be replaced in the sam e holes. T hen
the m echanic dum ped everything in one big
container! It seems th ey ’re sta n d a rd sizes so
Ja n e ’s careful organizing w asn ’t really
necessary.
Jane w ould like to find a niche in the
aviation w orld. She applied fo r a jo b in the
FAA office, passed all the tests an d at
present has her nam e on the w aiting-list for
a w eather briefer.
Lake Erie C h ap ter is very p ro u d o f Ja n e
and the tw o previous annual P ilo t-o f-th eYear w inners w hose nam es are inscribed on
the base o f the trophy w hich is loan ed to
the newest aw ardee for the com ing year.

Darlene Fletcher, a ch arter m em ber o f

second in R egional C o m p etitio n held

T his was no sm all feat as C aro ly n merely
went dow n to observe, b u t w ound up
piloting a plane th a t was n o t her ow n.
Being am ong the five to p scorers o f the
regional m eet, C arolyn is invited to
com pete in the N ational C ham pionships
scheduled for May-1977 in W ichita, K an­
sas. T he official fo u r m em ber team o f the
U .S . N atio n al Precision Flight T eam will
then be selected to represent o u r co u n try at
the 1977 W orld C ham pionships to be held
in A ugust 1977 at Linz, A ustria.
Precision flight com petition is intended
fo r solo pilots, flying single engine light
a ircraft. Pilots com pete in flight planning,
navigation an d landing events a n d , are
scored fo r their accuracy an d degree o f
skill.
C arolyn is a C F II and also holds a
helicopter rating; she has over 3,000 hours

also enjoyed viewing the part in w hich these
m odels were used extensively to reco n stru ct
aviation’s progress in C an ad a.

newest instantaneous vertical speed indica­
tors (which are now being coupled with
glide slope receivers) and angle o f attack
indicators w hich are unsurpassed as an
approach cue and offer a precise yet sim ple
means for optim izing endu ran ce o r range.

Coastal Bend 99s are busy p lanning a
b ang-up convention to take place O ct. 7-9
a b o ard the Flagship H otel located over the
Bay o f G alveston. The airp o rt is w ithin 5
m inutes o f the Flagship, and G alveston has
fo o d o f the m ost superlative q uality and
activities fo r the w hole fam ily. C om e see

m ake a blade fo r a helicopter is the m ost
com plicated, yet intriguing thing we were

San A ntonio Chapter has m oved their
m eeting place to Rebel A viation at In tern a­
tional A irp o rt, b u t w o n ’t be seeing m uch o f
their new location fo r aw hile. F ebruary saw
them at K ardys A irp o rt for an A erobatics
program , including free flight d e m o n stra­
tion. M arch will find them in K errville, TX
touring the M ooney P lan t.

C hapter was loud and lively. N inety-N ine
Debbie Fischer organized a S afety Bowl
Contest based on the form at o f television’s
College Bowl. T w o team s, the D ing-bats
and the Angels, answ ered tim ed q uestions
about all aspects o f flying safety: first on a
group basis, then on an individual basis in
the enlightening round. W e soon fo u n d o u t
all we knew. . .o r was it all we d id n ’t
know ?! The D ing-bats w on.
Dr. Bob R ichards, FA A M edical E x am ­
iner from W ilson, gave a very interesting
and inform ative presentation on “ H igh
A ltitude Physiology” durin g a recent
Kittyhawk C hapter m eeting. H e talked
about the relationship o f sm oking and
alcohol to flying, and you m ight be
interested to know that if you sm o k e a pack
o f cigarettes a day, you are physiologically
at 10,000 feet or better, all the tim e.

O n M ay 17, 1966 a sm all nucleus o f
w om en pilots form ed the “ P ettico a t P i­
lo ts” o f T o p ek a. W ithin th e y ear, the
m em bers decided to becom e 99s a n d the
Topeka Chapter o f 99s was b o rn . As of
M arch 18, 1977 the ch ap te r will be ten years
old. W ith the advent o f o u r tenth
anniversary there is one rem aining C h a rte r
m em ber — Sondra Ridgeway.
S o n d ra, m o th er o f fo u r y o u n g sters, now
either m arried or in college, learned to fly
in the fam ily 172 in 1965. T h e re a fte r her
aviation enthusiasm has been lim itless. She
has held every ch ap te r office (som e twice),
has been on num erous c h ap te r com m ittees.

o f passengers she m ade a successful landing
at B utler, M issouri doing no d am age to the
plane. U pon opening the cow l, how ever,

inches. A fter m uch delay fo r repairs and
p arts S o n d ra and the plane are now back in
the air an d the aviation en thusiasm is still
untarn ish ed and limitless.

Helen Cranz, an o th er Orange C ounty 99,
will take her IFR X -country to D enver,
then A spen, w here she’ll take tw o days o ff
to go skiing with her In stru cto r an d an o th er

The flying Grimsingers, Val and Ray o f
Palomar Chapter have hardly had tim e to
repack between trips with a flight to Texas
for Thanksgiving, to T o ro n to d u rin g the
C hristm as holidays, and now o ff to S outh
A m erica on an A O PA to u r.
Elaine Hussey, Redwood Empire and
49 Zi David m ade a third leg in th eir weekly
com m ute from P asadena to R eno to
C oncord. They were grounded at S acra­
m ento, and finished the trip by a u to . E laine
was elated with the experience o f flying for
21 hours in her C essna 150 to break in the
engine before it returns to leaseback. She
left from Los Angeles and to u red N evada,
New M exico, and A rizona.
Kay McGeehon was o ff to B aja C ali­
fornia to count whales again. She w ent with
the N ational E nvironm ental Studies gro u p
o f U niversity o f C alifo rn ia at Berkeley
extension. Besides counting w hales from
the air, they were researching plans fo r an
extension course.

Reno’s Shirley Weise did all the flying on
a recent C essna 310 trip from R eno to

Skyhaw k solo to M cCall a n d C hallis,
Idaho, stopping at W innem ucca, N evada
for fuel. But the really fun flight w as a local
one in a J-3 C ub.

George J. Priester is a
railroad engineer who in 1928 also became a pilot. In 1953, he bought a Chicago-area field with
sand and gravel runways which he has since developed into Pal-Waukee Airport, one of the
nation’s finest. 5 paved and lighted runways. 400 based aircraft. 70 T-hangars, 5 acres of roofed
hangar space. Jet charter operation. Tower, ILS, restaurant— you name it, he’s got it. A profes­
sional business operation resulting from a sophisticated management approach. I /Son Charlie
joined George at age 14. Holder of both an ATP and a degree in Business Administration, he
is currently Pal-Waukee’s general manager. Sisters Sheila and Sharon are commercial pilots.
