SAINT BONAVENTURE CATHOLIC PARISH The one who is coming after me is mightier than I. Second Sunday of Advent December 8, 2013 Second Sunday of Advent Page two PASTOR’S CORNER Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Here we are at the Second Sunday of Advent. St. John the Baptist is at the center of today’s Gospel (Matthew 3:1-12). He calls the people to: “Repent, for the kingdom of God is at hand!” Many people do so by acknowledging their sins during a baptism with water. But St. John the Baptist tells people that a mightier one is coming who will baptize with the Holy Spirit and fire. This is how we were baptized. Yes, water was poured on us or we were immersed in water. But remember that the Holy Spirit was called upon that water of Baptism when it was blessed: “Lord, send your Holy Spirit upon the water of this font; may all who are buried with him in the death of baptism, rise also with him to newness of life.” Then with this Spiritfilled water we are baptized: “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.” What a wonderful gift we were given when we were baptized: the gift of newness of life, the gift of eternal life. But now I return to the words of St. John the Baptist, “Produce good fruit as evidence of your repentance.” In other words, we have been baptized in the Lord who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As the Baptized, what good fruit are we producing in our daily lives? What is the good we are doing? Do our daily actions acknowledge our love of God and neighbor? Are we preparing for the Lord’s Coming by leading Christ-like lives? May the blessing of St. Paul to the Romans encourage us: “May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to think in harmony with one another, in keeping with Christ Jesus, that with one accord you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 15:4-9) RETIREMENT FUND for RELIGIOUS and PRIESTS December 7-8 Now in its 26th year, this annual national collection benefits over 34,000 senior Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests. In the past, men and women religious served for small stipends that did not include retirement benefits. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate savings for retirement. Proceeds are distributed to eligible communities to help underwrite retirement and health-care expenses. Since the collection began, Catholics have contributed $698 million. Over 93 percent of donations directly support senior religious and their communities. Solemnity of THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Observance transferred to Monday, December 9 Masses 6:30 and 8:30 a.m. English 12:10 p.m. English 6:30 p.m. Vietnamese 8:00 p.m. Spanish Though the Immaculate Conception is not a holy day of obligation this year, it is a holy day. The Faithful are encouraged to attend Mass. F ather, the image of the Virgin is found in your Church. Mary had a faith that your Spirit prepared and a love that never knew sin, for you kept her sinless from the first moment of her conception. Trace in our actions the lines of her love, in our hearts her readiness of faith. Prepare once again a world for your Son who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. —From Catholic Household Blessings and Prayers December 8, 2013 Page three FAMILY FELLOWSHIP MINISTRY Volunteer Sign-up December 8 After Sunday Morning Masses in the Parish Hall Join us Sunday, December 8 At the 9:00 a.m. Mass Followed by a Christmas Gathering In the Duffy Center and Pavilion Area Self-Help Interfaith Program (S.H.I.P.) shelter program will arrive at St. Bonaventure Saturday morning, December 28 and depart Saturday morning January 18. Maybe it’s time for a little mystery, a little flirtatiousness, a date where you revisit the places you enjoyed when your love was new and relive some of the happy moments that brought you together. If it sounds a little immature to act like a teenager again, just keep this in mind — in the best marriages, the chase is never really over. “Mary was free from every evil not only by the grace of God, but also by her cooperation with grace. Her cooperation consisted, above all, in remaining humble.” —S.C. Biela, In The Arms of Mary, p.151 • Small faith-sharing groups open to anyone seeking a deeper relationship with the loving presence of Jesus. Call Mary Jane Bartee at 846-8434. Right now the Life Center has a GREAT NEED for GENTLY-USED MATERNITY CLOTHES, BABY CLOTHES and FURNITURE, to help the women who are struggling with being pregnant or being new mothers in these difficult times. The Life Center is also still in great need of funding! We are planning to hold our annual ST. BONAVENTURE LIFE-A-THON to raise money for the Life Center on SATURDAY, JANUARY 25 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. Please put this date on your calendar, and plan to participate to help the Life Center continue its important pro-life work. One way you can help is to donate a prize we can give to one of our top money-raisers. Tickets to amusement parks and sporting events are always a big hit, but any kind of donation we can use as a prize will help! Please call Deacon Joe Sullivan at 842-9707 if you would like to donate a prize or help in any other way. Thanks for always being so supportive! HOPE AND HEALING AFTER ABORTION Hope and Healing After Abortion is a ministry that reaches out to women, men and significant others who have had their life impacted by the act of abortion. If your life has been touched by the act of abortion and you would like to speak with someone, please call 1-800-722-4356. You are not alone. We are here to listen and walk with you in the healing process. All conversations are confidential. There is no cost for this service. ALZHEIMER’S FAMILY SERVICES CENTER (AFSC) Alzheimer’s Family Services Center (AFSC) would like to thank St. Bonaventure’s Men’s Club for supporting our vital work with an annual gift of $300. AFSC is a nonprofit agency that provides daily care for individuals living with Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia and supportive services for their caregivers and family members. The center offers two levels of individualized day services to meet the unique needs of our participants: New Connection Club — an early stage program for individuals with mild cognitive impairment and Friendship Club — a program for those with moderate to late stage dementia. Both programs offer extensive medical, physical and dietary oversight and more importantly, offer our participants the opportunity to socialize with others, which allows them to stay connected and engaged. The likelihood that Alzheimer’s will touch someone you love is growing significantly. Until there is a cure, Alzheimer’s Family Services Center is here to help. If you are interested in learning more about the services being offered at AFSC, please visit our website at www.afscenter.org or drop by the center for a tour. We are located at 9451 Indianapolis Avenue in Huntington Beach. Our phone number is 593-9630.
