Gratulerer med dagen!!
Dear Vesterheim Lodge Members: Gratulerer med dagen!! Syttende Mai (17th of May) is just around the corner. This year’s festivities will be held on Saturday, 19 May 2012 and include: the Fjellborg Vikings http://www.fjellborg.org/ , a parade, accordion music by Ron Tomocik, food, fellowship, folk-dancing, and games for all ages. I am looking forward to seeing all of our members and guests at Atonement Lutheran Church. Can you believe that Spring is half over? As the weather in Colorado begins to warm up and our thoughts turn to summer, one suddenly realizes that in 6-weeks we will be celebrating mid-summer in Estes Park at the Twentieth Annual Scandinavian Midsummer Festival, and everyone knows what that means…all hands on deck!! So, it’s time to sign-up for cookie baking, lefse making, and volunteering to help out with the Vesterheim Food booth or at one of the Festival booths. We need your help to make this year’s 20th anniversary festival a success! This year we have tweaked and hopefully improved our plan for the festival and fund-raising. Recognizing the amount of people and time that it takes to make and sell both crafts and food items, the board decided to only sell food at the Scan Fest and crafts at the Trollheim Christmas Bazaar — the proceeds of both fund our lodge operations, our Adopt-a-School Jazz Program at Boulder High School, our social and cultural programs, as well as, our donations to Atonement Lutheran Church for the use of their facilities. I invite all members and anyone interested in lefse to join us at either or both lefse bakes. Prior lefse making experience is not necessary. Similar to last year, the lefse baking will take place on two Saturdays from 12:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in twohour shifts starting at 12:30, 2:00, 3:30. On both days, we’ll start by making gluten-free lefse. The first lefse party will be held at Julie and my home (9155 Blue Mountain Dr., Golden, 80403) on Saturday, 12 May 2012. The second lefse party will be held at the home of Carole and Garry Gorsuch (2443 Kalmia Avenue, Boulder 80304) on Saturday, 2 June 2012. For more information, please talk to Julie, Garry, Carole, or me. The festival has been successful because of Vesterheim Lodge’s commitment during the past four years. Let’s work together to make this year’s festival the most successful festival yet! The Viking Re-enactors will perform and display Viking artifacts. This group puts a tremendous amount of time into creating Viking tools, swords, and other utensils. This has been very popular with the children and we encourage all children of all ages to join us for this celebration. We are fortunate to have this group with us again. Vesterheim also welcomes Ron Tomocik to play his accordion. He is an excellent musician and can play many different ethnic songs. Hot dogs and ice cream will be provided by Vesterheim but we are asking our members to bring a side dish. Norwegian dishes are always welcome but any side dish or dessert would be great! Invite your neighbors and friends to join us for a wonderful celebration! This event will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church, Baseline and Inca Parkway. SCANDINAVIAN FESTIVAL The Scandinavian Festival will be held in Estes Park June 23-24. Vesterheim Lodge sponsors this Festival and puts a great amount of work into it. We decided to do this three years ago because we feel this is a very valuable Scandinavian cultural event and we want it to continue. We will have a food booth which is our main fundraising event as well as helping with the demonstration, raffle, and silent auction booths. Erik Peters, our Lodge President, is directing the Festival this year. Addy Martinez will be calling again for cookies to sell and Jo Kirkenaer will be in charge of hot dog sales. Gary and Carol Gorsuch will also demonstrate lefse making so as you can see our whole Lodge is involved in this. Last year we had good participation and hope we can count on everyone this year also! BOOK CLUB We are reading The Princes of Ireland (The Dublin Saga) by Edward Rutherfurd. The saga begins in tribal, preChristian Ireland during the reign of the fierce and mighty High Kings at Tara. In April we read the first three chapters and for May 30 we plan on reading chapters 4-6 which is the section on the Vikings. For our June 27 Book Club we plan to finish the book and will read chapters 7-9. This is a long book but one well worth reading. Our book club is open to all who love to read and enjoy Scandinavian literature. We meet the last Wednesday of every month at 11:30 am at the “Egg and I” in Boulder. VESTERHEIM’S LIBRARY Vesterheim Lodge has a library located in the chapel at Atonement. We are starting to collect a good variety of Scandinavian books for both adults and children. Some of our book club members have also donated books we have read to the library. Other donations of quality Scandinavian books are welcomed. We encourage all our members to check out our library when they come to a meeting and check out some of these interesting books! If you have questions about our library please contact Helen House or Kathy Erickson. 3 Top Ten Most Expensive Cities 1. Trondheim, Norway 2. Stavanger, Norway 3. Zurich, Switzerland 4. They continue to move forward year after year with no fear of loss unlike other investments you may own. So just how safe is your money in our fixed annuities? Annuities are issued only by life insurance companies (Sons of Norway is a life insurance company). With the recent financial crisis going on both nationally and globally, it is good to know Sons of Norway has a strong and solid portfolio of high grade bonds and treasuries, no risky stocks or sub-prime mortgages. To put your mind further at ease, insurance companies are regulated at the state level, with very strict regulations. There is also another safety net, the State Guaranty Fund Associations, covering various amounts similar to the FDIC. There are tax advantages to owning annuities and you will find our interest rates are very respectable. Trondheim’s flag & coat of arms TRONDHEIM TOPS LIST Worldwide cost of living database, Numbeo.com, has created a new listing of the world's most expensive cities. While Oslo and Stavanger are often contenders for the top spot on the list, a new Norwegian city is taking making it's way into the ranks to the surprise of many. Trondheim–Norway's third most populated city with a population just over 176,000–is the new holder of the top spot in the list. On a personal note I would like to thank everyone for your cards, phone calls and well wishes during my recovery from surgery. As soon as I get the okay to drive I will be back on the road again. You can call and I can discuss or mail information to you. In the ten months preceding the prince’s birth, the couple met only once. At the time when conception would have taken place, Haakon was on a ship in Denmark, and Maud in a London hospital. Well-known Norwegian author Tor Bomann-Larsen has published his fifth book on the history of King Haakon and Queen Maud. Bomann-Larsen has had unique access to the royal archives in Oslo, Copenhagen, Russia, and England to research his books and has formulated some controversial ideas, presented in this article. Queen Maud was a British princess when she was married to Haakon, who was at that time a Danish prince. The newly-wed and somewhat hypochondriac Maud never wanted to leave England and move to Denmark, even though she was part Danish herself. The couple did move back, and Maud became quite critical of her new country and its people. She thought the female Danish royalty ‘developed “monstrous forms”...wore “old-fashioned clothes”, and fretted that this was “contagious”.’ Aftenposten One letter home complained that she “really never cared” about how she looked, because no body else there was fashionable. Maud endured various health problems for years, and finally passed away in London on November 20, 1938, suffering from terminal cancer. It is suggested that she may have been euthanized by her physician, Lord Bertrand Edward Dawson, a well-known advocate of euthanasia. Maud’s brother, King George V, had been injected with a fatal dose of morphine and cocaine by Lord Dawson three years earlier. The king had been suffering from a terminal disease and was spared a painful death. After six years of marriage, Maud finally got pregnant. She immediately returned to England and it wasn’t until the baby, Prince Alexander (later King Olav), was nine months old that she went back to Denmark. The royal couple nearly forgot to alert the Danish monarch that the new prince had been born on July 2, 1903. Question has been raised as to who is the true father of Prince Alexander. In October of 1902 Maud stayed in a London Hospital under the care of her father’s physician, Sir Francis Laking. It is during this time that Maud may have been artificially impregnated, using the sperm of Sir Francis Laking’s son, Guy Francis Laking. Bomann-Larsen’s second book, Folket, contains a photograph of Guy Francis Laking, who bears a striking resemblance to the adult Prince Alexander (King Olav). Since the couple had remained childless for six years, there Haakon was not present when Maud died. He was on his way to England, and heard the news when he reached Copenhagen. Finland has the fourth highest rate of gun ownerships in the world. With a population of 5.3 million, there are 1.5 million registered firearms. The USA, Switzerland, and Yemen are the only countries with a higher rate. Gun lobbyists say the only reason Finns own firearms is because they are hunters with the majority of firearm permits being for hunting, and the remainder for target practice. They are also part of Finland’s military culture, due to compulsory service in the army. Last year Finland raised the age limit for a firearm license from 15 to 18 for hunting arms, and 20 for all others. "Fair enough,'" says the boss. "Here's your second question. Use the same rules, but this time represent the number 99." The Norwegian stares into space for a while, then picks up the picture that he has just drawn and makes a smudge on each tree. 'Dar ya go!' The boss scratches his head and says, 'How on earth do you get that to represent 99?' 'You must be from Iowa …Each of DA trees is dirty now. So, it's dirty tree, and dirty tree, and dirty tree. Dat is 99.' The boss is getting worried that he's going to actually have to hire this Norwegian, so he says, "All right, last question. Same rules again, but represent the number 100." Finland has the seventh highest per capita rate of homicides in the EU (higher being Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Bulgaria and Hungary.) However, according to Finnish crime experts, there is no correlation between gun ownership and crimes. Firearms are used in only 14 percent of homicide cases, compared with a 2006 statistic of 68% in the USA. The high level of homicides in Finland is attributed to the high level of alcohol consumed. 82% of men and 59% of women who committed murder were intoxicated at the time. Sources: National Institute of Justice, Scandinavian Press The Norwegian fella stares into space some more, then he picks up the picture again and makes a little mark at the base of each tree and says,"Dar yew go! Von hundred!" The boss looks at the attempt. 'You must be nuts if you think that represents a hundred!' The Norwegian winces and shakes his head…UFFDAH…you must be a Finlander from Iowa…he leans forward and points to the marks at the base of each tree and says, 'A little dog come along and pooped by each tree. So now you got dirty tree and a turd, dirty tree and a turd, and dirty tree and a turd, and dat makes von hundred! So, ven do I start?" A NORWEGIAN MATH TEST --- This only works for those in Minnnesnowta or Viskonsin…! Ole, a Norwegian fella, wants a job, but the foreman doesn’t want to hire him, so he says he won't hire him until he passes a little math test. Here is your first question, the foreman said. "Without using numbers, represent the number 9.' 'Witout numbers ?' The Norwegian says, easssy.' and proceeds to draw three trees. Norwegian teleevangelist Jan Hanvold accused her of “blasphemy” and said she was an “emissary from hell”. Princess Märtha Louise has just published her second book on angels, “Englenes hemmelighter” which translates “The Angels’ Secrets”. This is a sequel to “Meet your Guardian Angel” which came out in 2009 and received strong sales. Both books were co-authored with her business partner Elisabeth Nordeng. Their first book concentrates on how you can get in touch with your own inner power and guardian angel. “The most important thing we wish to communicate,” they said, “is the pleasure and excitement that lies in having an honest encounter with yourself from your true vibrational structure.” (source: Astarte) If that whetted your appetite you can now read about the angels’ universe and angel secrets to make it easier to contact them. “Angels want to be in touch with you, but it's important to know how they operate and how they get in touch," the authors said. "They are there for us. They are real. They exist." The princess says she has had supernatural experiences since childhood. In 2002, when Märtha Louise married author Ari Behn, her title “royal” was removed by King Harald (with her consent) from her official standing in the royal court. This enabled her to start her own business and pay income tax separate from the monarchy. Märtha Louise remains her own person, independent and unique, continually evolving... If you have lefse making equipment please bring it and be sure to let the hosts know if you are coming. We will be working in shifts so no one needs to be there all day, unless they wish. All this has led to some public concern and negative publicity by the press. The Norwegian public broadcast company NRK gave their latest book a scathing review. Various religious leaders have publicly expressed disapproval of her self-reported ability to contact angels and the dead, saying it goes 7 NORWAY AND THE HOLOCAUST It was originally published in Norway in 2008, under the title “Vi skal plukke poteter”, Flukten fra Holocaust.” The English version was launched at the Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford in April 2010. It is endorsed by Nobel Laureate holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel. and has received excellent reviews. Information about the author and her book can be found on the website listed below. Norway has been largely overlooked in the history of the holocaust because of its small Jewish population. A book has now been written on this subject by Norwegian born Irene Berman. In 1940 Germany invaded Norway, and by 1942 the deportation of Norway’s Jews to the concentration camps began. At that time there were approximately 2000 Jews living there. Many of them had come from Germany and other Eastern European countries back in the 1930s, in order to find a safe haven from the rising power of Hitler. Of the 771 Jews that were deported during the war, only 28 men survived. 238 Norwegian Jewish families died. Today there are around 1500 Jews living in Norway, mainly in Oslo and Trondheim. The Dutch lingerie company Change has a policy requiring its employees to include on their name tags their bust circumference and cup size. But not for long. One shop assistant in Sweden is getting this off her chest and has taken her complaint to the Commercial Employees Union, which is now filing a lawsuit against Change. An employee told the union paper Handelsnytt “We have dirty old men coming into the shop looking at my cup size....Guys selling underwear don’t have to show their size.” Change sells 90 bra sizes, up to a J cup. With the help of the Norwegian Resistance Movement, Irene and her family barely escaped to Sweden where they lived for the next three years. Within hours of their arrival there, the Norwegian State Police in Oslo began their systematic round-up of all Jewish families, who were booked for mandatory passage on a ship to their final destination - Auschwitz. Seven members of Irene’s father’s family were among those who did not get out in time and were killed in the camps. More in a future Newsletter. Arnfinn Moland, director of Norway's Resistance Museum, encouraged Irene to research this topic, resulting in her book, “We are Going to Pick Potatoes: Norway and the Holocaust, the Untold Story”. It is a memoir of Irene’s experiences during and after the war, as well as those of others she interviewed, who returned afterwards to rebuild their community. Extensive research went into the preparation of this book. 8 S.O.N. NORWEGIAN LANGUAGE RESOURCES forward to being a delegate at future conventions……. Deaths, 2010-2012 - Please remember that it your Lodge’s responsibility to notify our SON Minneapolis Office of a Lodge members passing. The “Notification of Death” form can be found in the SofN website under forms/Lodge forms. This must be filled in and forwarded to Minneapolis as soon as possible – it will also stop future membership billing. A Memorial Service to remember these members takes place at the District Convention every 2 years. If Minneapolis has not been advised, these people will be missed for this service. To ensure our past members are remembered at our convention in Mesa, AZ in June, please be sure that this form has been sent to Minneapolis, and as a back-up, send the names for your Lodge to me also. I will pass these names to the person in charge of the Memorial Service so she can confirm that she has all names. You can send these names to me at any time, and if need be, make additions as late as Friday, June 1st, so hopefully we will not miss anyone this year. Norwegian in 5 Minutes a Month This program consists of 37 lessons of simple phrases, written in Norwegian with English translations and pronounced by native speakers. They are all aimed at the beginner level and will give you a sense of what the language sounds like and how it works. Norwegian for Reading Comprehension This is a brand-new and unique course in reading Norwegian for general understanding. This program covers the many historical forms of Norwegian, and teaches you innovative reading strategies for understanding anything from modern web pages to old immigrant letters. NOTES FROM YOUR DISTRICT ZONE DIRECTOR Contact information – Please notify the SON International Office, Minneapolis, when making a change of your telephone number and/or e-mail address. I think most update a mailing address, but don’t think to update other contact information. When updating local and district information, the information from Minneapolis is our guide, and if that information is no longer valid, your contact information in the NEW directory will be of no value. This is especially difficult when updating the directory for the district! Your help to keep your contact information current will be greatly appreciated. Cookies – All Lodges have received the information packet for the 2012 District Convention being held in Mesa, AZ in June. In that packet is a letter requesting all Lodges contribute cookies for the daily cookie and coffee breaks. All who have attended conventions know how popular these breaks are, and the amazing amount of cookies consumed during these breaks! Typically the lodges near the Host Lodge for the convention contribute cookies. However, this year there is no Host Lodge – the “host” is the District Board, which covers all Zones and all Lodges. Therefore, we ask that you all help out to ensure that we have enough cookies to keep these Norske delegates happy, and looking Crystal Sundet Dist 6, Zone 8 Director 9 VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SCANDINAVIAN MIDSUMMER FESTIVAL JUNE 23-24, 2012 silent auction, Vesterheim’s food tent, audience tent, lefse booth, and 3 10x10s for vendors. NORWAY'S POPULATION HITS 5 MILLION On Monday, March 19th, Norway's population officially reached the 5 million mark. Boosted by record-high growth rates, statisticians believe Norway's population increase is largely due to three factors, high fertility rate, a strong economy, and a stable democracy, making it a desirable location for immigrants. Historically, Norway has suffered a few setbacks in population growth. Notably, the Black Plague years of the mid 1300s, when 60% of Norway's population died and in the mid to late 1800s, when a significant number of Norwegians emigrated to the U.S. It wasn't until the 1940s and later in 1975 that Norway surpassed the three and four million mark. Contrary to 160 years ago when Norway was losing much of it's population to emigration, Norway's recent population boom is mostly due to immigration. In 2011, data collected by Statistics Norway (SSB), indicated that immigrants accounted for 71% of Norway's growth in the past year, with the bulk of immigrants hailing from Poland, Sweden and Pakistan. SSB researchers also say it is likely that longer life spans, increased fertility rates and a rise in paid maternity and paternity leave have also had a larger effect on Norway's recent population growth.
