“It’s easy to stay away from fruits and
summer salads when the weather turns, but
don’t fall into the habit of eating unhealthily,” says
Nicola. “Switch to seasonal produce that will feel
comforting, like carrots, winter squashes and
parsnips. Cruciferous vegetables, such as broccoli,
contain a compound which is difficult for the
body to break down, and so can lead to
bloating. So, make sure you only eat
a small amount of them and that
they’re well cooked.”
this year’s hottest look isn’t cooling off anytime soon. Here’s
how to shape up so you can bare your stomach with pride
Trim Tummy Tips
Don’t gobble down your
grub. Eating too fast and not
chewing your food properly
can cause you to swallow
extra air, which leads to
bloating. Your meals should
take at least 30 minutes to
eat. Thoroughly chewed food
will stimulate the release of
digestive hormones in the
stomach and intestines.
Make sure you drink
plenty of water. If
you’re dehydrated,
you’re more likely to

become constipated,
as fibre can’t keep
moving though your
digestive tract. Try
and drink around 1.5
litres of water a day.

it’s common for people to gain weight
due to the increase in stodgy comfort
food and the lack of motivation to get
out and exercise,” explains Nicola.
“It’s also a myth that we need
more calories to keep warm in the
winter. Generally, none of us are
cold enough for that, because we
keep wrapped up and move from
one heated environment to another.”
So instead of being one of the 35
per cent of women that say they wear
baggy clothes to hide a bloated
stomach (according to a study by
Buscopan IBS Relief), it’s crucial that
we target the problem head on.

Change how you
cook. Many people
find that raw foods,
such as salads,
lead to bloating.
Steaming your food
(to preserve the
nutrients which help break
down the food in your tum)
can help with this.
Avoid caffeine and alcohol.

If you want abs of steel, you’ll need more than just a good
diet – exercise is vital, too. But don’t just spend hours doing
sit-ups. If you want to shift the excess flab from your middle,
you’ll need to incorporate some cardio-burning activity, too.
Personal trainer Anthony Mayatt from breathefitness.uk.com
explains the best exercises to get your tum looking trim.
Cardio – for fat burning
“The best form of cardio for fat loss is High Intensity
Interval Training. This is a series of short sprints. Do 30
seconds of sprint followed by two minutes of rest. Repeat
this sequence for 20 minutes. Do it three times a week.”
you developing a ‘wine waist’
(a podgy belly), because wine
is loaded with sugar, which
eventually gets turned into fat.
Don’t be fooled by diet
foods. Low-calorie meals
are often sweetened with
sugars, such as xylitol,
which can leave you feeling
bloated. Pre-packed dinners
can contain chemicals,
salt and preservatives,
which are also responsible
for giving your tum that
unappealing puff.
Russian Twist – works the obliques
“Sit upright with your knees bent. Lean back slightly, lift
your feet an inch off the floor and then twist from side
to side. Twist for 60 seconds and then repeat five times.”

ummies are on-trend, big
time. From full-on midriff
baring to cheeky upper-ab
flashes, stars and their
stomachs are everywhere.
The good news is that you don’t
need to be a supermodel to carry off
a crop top, as curvy Kimberley Walsh
(right), 31, perfectly demonstrates.
You just have to get body smart.
“To get great abs, you need
a specific exercise plan which
incorporates working your stomach
muscles with fat-burning cardio,”
says nutritional therapist Nicola
Ragon-Paxton. “But it’s also possible
to beat the bloat that comes with
eating the wrong foods.”
“The most obvious hurdle is not to
overeat,” adds Nicola. “During winter,
Plank – works the core
“Lie on your front, then lift your body up so only the
forearms and toes are touching the ground. Ensuring
your body is in a straight line, hold this position for 60
seconds, keeping your abs tucked in. Repeat five times.”
Running is one of
the quickest ways
to bust a gut
Jackknife Sit-up – works the front abdominals
“Lie on the floor with outstretched arms behind you and
legs in front. Come into a sit-up aiming to touch your
hands to feet. Do 15 reps and then repeat five times.”
