Business Community Award 2014
Sponsored by QBE Insurance
Welcome to our
Spring Season
We are now well into our 120th
anniversary season and over
100 people attended a birthday
reception here in October.
With the pantomime starting
rehearsals shortly we are right
in the middle of the busiest
time of year but still planning
for an even more exciting 2015.
Two of the key elements in our
120th anniversary celebrations
are the Sponsor Your Seat
campaign and an Anniversary
Variety Performance on 13
February. Full details are
included inside this programme
and we hope as many of you as
possible will be able to
participate in one or both of
these important events.
As many of you know these are
challenging times for everyone
working in the Arts and it was
therefore especially pleasing
for us to not only be nominated
for the Business Community
Award at the Yorkshire Post
Excellence in Business Awards
(one of just 3 businesses) but to
win the title on 30 October at a
glittering ceremony at the
Queens Hotel in Leeds. In
accepting this award we are
very aware that our success
depends on being able to
demonstrate the extraordinary
support that you give us individuals, communities and
businesses – without which we
would simply not be
sustainable.
In a week of good news we also
learned of the success of our
application for funding from
the Arts Council to enable us to
commission a new version of
the Wakefield Mysteries which
is being planned for the
summer of 2016. With our
commitment to work with
young people this will be a
youth production engaging
over 100 young people from
across the district and taking
place in Wakefield Cathedral.
More information will be
available shortly...so watch this
space.
In the spring we are reviving
our production of Bouncers
prior to an extended UK tour,
and for those of you who have
seen The Woman in Black

to be presenting an adaptation

from the Coliseum Theatre

Finally, to end the 120th
anniversary year our Youth
Music Theatre Company will be
presenting Cats from 26 August
for 2 weeks.
But as we said at the beginning
of this introduction, none of
this would be possible without
your support. If you value what
we do and would like to help
then you will find further
information about how to do
this inside. We are thrilled that
what we’re doing is being

following pages we hope you
will find something to inspire

We really look forward to
welcoming you to the theatre in
the spring.

A firm favourite with Prince
Charles, The Three Degrees are
well known for their soulful voices,
beautiful gowns, and fabulous
stage shows. They are known all
around the world for songs like
When will I see you again, Dirty Ol'
Man, Take Good Care Of Yourself.
They have been continuously
touring for more than 40 years and
still touring to this day.
The Three Degrees are Helen
Scott, Valerie Holiday and Freddie
Pool.
Helen and Valerie both joined The
Three Degrees in the 1960's so the
group is still very much original.
They both sang at Prince Charles'

Nick Lane, the man behind hit comedies
Housebound, My Favourite Summer and Me And Me
Dad, is back with Royal Flush, a brand new play
about toilets, brought to life by Rich Seam Theatre
and starring Matthew Booth who played
Emmerdale’s Paul Marsden.
It’s a play of two parts: the first is set in 1882 when,
after years of inspiration, innovation and occasional
idiocy, Thomas Crapper is given the commission to
provide toilets for Queen Victoria. Fast forward to an
old people’s home 130 years later and toilet cleaner
Joe has the job of a lifetime on his hands as he gets
all the lavs ready for a Diamond Jubilee royal visit.
Seeing is believing! If you’re looking for an
evening's entertainment like you’ve never
seen before, then meet Giles, Ralph,
Graham and Neal Broadbent collectively
known as Stringfever.
With their electric instruments and live beatboxing, the world’s first genetically modified
string quartet combine exceptional musical
skill with a real talent for involving and
engaging audiences to provide you with a
night you’ll never forget.

Adapted by Ian Kershaw from the novel by Susan Hill

Designed by Barney George
Video Design by Simon Wainwright
Adapted from the novel by Susan Hill, author of The
Woman in Black, this tense and atmospheric new
production is an otherworldly mystery that leaves a
terrifying eeriness suspended in the air.
A ghostly chill falls over Theatre Royal Wakefield this
spring with a traveller's strange tale of threats from
beyond the grave.
The Mist in the Mirror is a gothic fireside story which
the audience is invited to eavesdrop on. Visual theatre
innovators imitating the dog will once again be on
hand to create an unnerving ethereal atmosphere
before the show even begins and an unsettling feeling
that might just follow you home at the end of
the night too...
