Say Hello to Brian Shepard, the Library’s New Director! On October 28, the board and staff of the Indian Trails Library District welcomed Brian Shepard as its new director! We are excited that Brian is joining our library, as he brings a wealth of technology and building experience to the job. Moving to a new country can be daunting. There may be a language barrier, uncertainty about local customs and the stress of finding a job or getting a driver’s license. In October the Indian Trails Library District launched its Immigrant/ New Citizen Center (ICC), where staff has gathered resources to aid immigrants and new citizens in their transition to America. Prior to joining Indian Trails, Brian was the assistant director at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, where he has worked in various positions for 20 years. While the library has always offered a robust collection of foreign language materials in Russian, Polish, Spanish and Korean, the idea for an Immigrant/New Citizen Center grew directly from the library’s strategic plan by addressing the goal of providing comprehensive services and materials to meet the needs of immigrant populations. “The Indian Trails library serves a very diverse population who has a wide range of needs,” said Brian. “I’m excited to work with the staff and trustees to find ways to meet the needs of everyone we serve, whether it be through our collection, programs or services.” Located on the second floor of the library, the ICC will provide three areas of service: collection development, multilingual programs and immigrant/new citizen assistance. Members can find print resources on citizenship, education, employment and cultural awareness. Where is the Program? All programs are held at 355 Schoenbeck unless noted otherwise. Please refer to these icons for programs held at other locations. 2 Online resources are also available with the assistance of staff. In addition to enhancing its current materials, the library has added more programs geared toward immigrants and new citizens, such as All Polonia Reads to Kids, ESL classes to improve English skills and the Illinois Dream Act. As we continue improving and growing the ICC, we would like to hear from you and encourage you to take the brief survey located at the service desks (available in four languages) or online at blog.indiantrailslibrary.org/?tag=survey (available in English).
