Thank you for making an effort to recycle. We need your support in order to comply with AB 939, the State
law that requires us to reduce the amount of waste going to local landfills by 50%.
Recycling is also important because it:
Saves space, prolonging the life of our landfills
Discourages wasteful behavior
Saves energy because manufacturing many products from recycled
materials is often less energy intensive than starting with new
materials
Postpones the costly tasks of closing an existing landfill and siting a
new one
Encourages cost-effective use of our resources, many of which
are limited and cannot be replaced once they are used up
USING THIS RECYCLING DIRECTORY
Please take the time to call before you go to a recycler. Besides directions, you can get information on any
changes in hours or materials accepted. Every effort has been made to provide you with the most complete,
accurate, and up-to-date information possible, but things change.

BATTERIES: Household (Alkaline) & Rechargeable
All batteries are considered hazardous waste. As of February 2006, it is no longer legal to place any battery into a landfill (or your
trash) in California. This ban includes batteries that do not contain lead as they contain other caustic/toxic chemicals. All types of
batteries may be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off event for recycling. It is anticipated that additional options will
become available as the business community becomes more aware of this recent change in the law. Please contact the County for
the most current information.
Important Note: There are alternative recycling options available for some types of batteries.
Vehicle batteries (lead-acid) may be taken to a variety of automobile-related businesses. Some of these businesses pay you for your
car battery.
Rechargeable batteries will be accepted at no charge by businesses that participate in the Rechargeable Battery Recycling
Corporation (RBRC) network. Rechargeable batteries include nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium ion and small sealed
lead batteries weighing up to 2 pounds each. They do not include the standard alkaline batteries that are not designed to be
regenerated in a recharging unit. Call “1-800-8-battery” to find the name and address of a place near you that participates in this
FREE program.
Did you know that rechargeable batteries cost less per hour of use than alkaline batteries, charge faster and last longer than ever
before? In addition, there are more than 50 locations in Fresno County for recycling rechargeable batteries every business day.

As of July 2006, it is no longer legal to place any cell phone into a landfill (or your trash) in California. With a few exceptions, this law
requires stores that sell or repair cell phones to accept old or broken phones for recycling at no charge. In addition, you may donate
your unwanted/obsolete phone to one of the many organizations that collect, refurbish and distribute discarded cell phones to
disadvantaged people in need of access to emergency services. Check with your favorite charity.

As of July 2007, most large supermarkets and stores with pharmacies will be required to provide a bin in which clean plastic carryout
bags may be collected for recycling and to make reusable bags available to customers for purchase. The new law also encourages
voluntarily compliance by other retail establishments and smaller supermarkets. Rather than relying on a list of participating stores,
consider encouraging every store you shop at to provide this service. And if you have not used reusable bags in the past, give them a
try. Most people find reusable bags to be very user-friendly and an improvement over both paper and plastic bags. If you place
recently emptied bags at the door, you are less likely to forget to take them back to your car and more likely to have them with you
when you are shopping.

Here is a way to dispose of things around your home such as:

toxic or caustic household cleaners · oven cleaners
pool chemicals · garden pesticides · herbicides · fertilizer

Sharps (needles and lancets used at home by “self-medicators”)
electronic waste: cathode ray tubes (e.g., computer monitors, television sets), laptop computers, game boxes
and other devices with a screen, including LCD and plasma
small appliances (e.g., coffee pots, toasters, dryers, phones, all types of recorders and players, office
machines, computers, things with mercury switches and things that light up)
The County of Fresno holds two “drop-off events” each year for County residents. One is usually in the Spring;
the other in the Fall. There is no charge for “residential” waste, but there are limits on the types and quantities of
items accepted. Reservations are required.

of January 1, 2006, State law prohibits landfills and scrap dealers from accepting discarded major appliances without a
“Certificate of Recycling” proving that all the hazardous materials in that appliance have been removed by a Certified
Appliance Recycler (CAR). When this edition of the directory was prepared, the list of CARs located in Fresno County was
very limited. It is anticipated that as the business community becomes more aware of this recent change in the law, new
options and contact information will be available. Please call the County for the most current information on where major
appliances may be taken for disposal by a CAR.

APPLIANCES: SMALL
Small appliances that contain toxic materials (e.g., mercury switches, heavy metals and/or lead solder) are banned by the
State from landfills in California as of February 2006. This ban includes, but is not limited to, items with electric cords and/
or computer chips, including computers, computer peripherals, telephones, answering machines, radios, stereos, players
and recorders (disk, tape, video), small appliances used for heating and cooking, hair dryers, calculators and other office
machines.
Residents of the City of Fresno (City) may place these items in the City’s blue recycling container IF the operation of the
container is not compromised (i.e., the lid will close properly and the item will drop out easily when collected). These items
may also be disposed of at no charge through the County’s Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off program.
At the time this edition of the directory was prepared, additional options for properly disposing of small appliances in
Fresno County were very limited. It is anticipated that as the business community becomes more aware of this recent
change in the law, new options and contact information will be available. Please call the County for the most current
information on where small appliances may be taken for disposal.
AMMUNITION, GUN POWDER, FIREWORKS, OTHER EXPLOSIVES
Call the business office of your local fire station, police department, or sheriff’s station for details.
BATTERIES
All batteries are considered hazardous waste. As of February 2006, it is no longer legal to place any battery into a landfill
(or your trash) in California. This ban includes batteries that do not contain lead as they contain other caustic/toxic
chemicals. All types of batteries may be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off event for recycling. It is
anticipated that additional options will become available as the business community becomes more aware of this recent
change in the law. Please contact the County for the most current information.
Important Note: There are alternative recycling options available for some types of batteries.
Vehicle batteries (lead-acid) may be taken to a variety of automobile-related businesses. Some of these businesses pay
you for your car battery.
Rechargeable batteries will be accepted at no charge by businesses that participate in the Rechargeable Battery
Recycling Corporation (RBRC) network. Rechargeable batteries include nickel cadmium, nickel metal hydride, lithium ion
and small sealed lead batteries weighing up to 2 pounds each. They do not include the standard alkaline batteries that are
not designed to be regenerated in a recharging unit. Call “1-800-8-battery” to find the name and address of a place near you
that participates in this FREE program.
Did you know that rechargeable batteries cost less per hour of use than alkaline batteries, charge faster and last longer
than ever before? In addition, there are more than 50 locations in Fresno County for recycling rechargeable batteries every
business day.

BUSINESS, COMMERCIAL AND MULTI-FAMILY UNIT RECYCLING PROGRAMS
Business, commercial and multi-family units located in the City of Fresno are encouraged to learn about the various
recycling programs available to them. The newest option is having a program custom-designed to fit your particular needs
and waste streams.
Businesses in incorporated cities other than the City of Fresno and the unincorporated portions of Fresno County are
invited to sign up for a FREE waste assessment. These on-site visits are designed to help a business identify
opportunities for reducing disposal costs and to provide options for increased recycling.

CARPET
Carpet and carpet padding free of solid waste (no tacking strips, no razor blades, no glue, no wallboard, no anything) may
be brought to the American Avenue Landfill for recycling. At the gate, ask if your load qualifies. If so, get directions to the
self-hauler recycling center. The tipping fee is the same, but you will be making a significant contribution to the County’s
waste diversion quota. Many types of carpet and padding are suitable for recycling and can be made into new padding at
a local processing facility.
Re-carpeting an apartment or office complex? If your old carpet is made of the right materials, you will want to speak with
the local recycling facility directly for additional options. Please call the County for additional information.
CELL PHONES
As of July 2006, it is no longer legal to place any cell phone into a landfill (or your trash) in California. With a few
exceptions, this law requires stores that sell or repair cell phones to accept old or broken phones for recycling at no
charge. In addition, you may donate your unwanted/obsolete phone to one of the many organizations that collect,
refurbish and distribute discarded cell phones to disadvantage people in need of access to emergency services. Check
with your favorite charity.
CHRISTMAS TREES
Some cities and private waste haulers have seasonal collection or drop-off programs. Call your waste collector for details.
Most accept trees if they are cut into pieces no longer than four feet and placed in the green waste collection bin. Call for
other options.
COMPOSTING BINS
Many “home” and hardware stores sell composters.

ELECTRONIC WASTE (E-WASTE): COMPUTER MONITORS AND TELEVISION SETS
E-waste includes television sets with cathode ray tubes (CRTs), plasma and liquid crystal displays (LCD). It also includes
computer monitors (with CRT and LCD displays), laptop computers and any devices which contain CRTs, plasma or LCD
screens larger than four inches measured diagonally. Recently, the State has begun enforcing laws that define E-waste as
a hazardous material and prohibit it from being disposed of in landfills. While E-waste is accepted at the semi-annual
Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off events, the local network of E-waste recyclers continues to grow, providing free
E-waste recycling services all year long. Please contact the County for a current list of businesses and charities that
accept and recycle E-waste for free.

EYE GLASSES
Many places that sell/repair eyeglasses collect this item for recycling. Just ask if they participate in the Lions Club
eyeglass program.
FLOORING MATERIALS/CEILING TILES
Some older flooring materials and ceiling tiles may contain asbestos. Special testing, packaging and noticing may be
required before you may dispose of these items. Call for details before you start this kind of project.

FLUORESCENT LIGHT BALLASTS
Ballasts may contain a hazardous chemical (PCB) and must be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off event.
There is no charge to residential customers for this service. Call for the date of the next drop-off event.
FLUORESCENT LIGHTS (BULBS/TUBES/LAMPS)
Fluorescent lights contain mercury, which is a hazardous chemical. As of February 2006, it is no longer legal to place
these lights, compact fluorescent lamps or high intensity light bulbs into a landfill. Large/commercial quantities of these
banned lamps must be sent to one of three tube recyclers in California, all of which are located outside of Fresno County.
Household quantities of fluorescent lamps may be brought to the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off event. It is
anticipated that additional options will become available as the business community becomes more aware of this recent
change in the law. Call for details, new options and contact information. Note: Regular light bulbs (incandescent bulbs)
may be disposed of with other, non-recyclable garbage.

JUNK MAIL
There are ways to reduce the amount of junk mail you receive. Call for information on companies and web sites that
remove your name from mailing lists.
MATTRESSES
Contact thrift stores and charitable organizations listed in your phone book.
MEDICATION
Do not attempt to recycle prescription drugs. It is both illegal and dangerous. Flushing medicine down the toilet is no
longer considered an environmentally sound option. Please bring unused medication to the next Household Hazardous
Waste Drop-off event.
PLASTIC BAGS
As of July 2007, most large supermarkets and stores with pharmacies will be required to provide a bin in which clean
plastic carryout bags may be collected for recycling and to make reuseable bags available to customers for purchase. The
new law also encourages voluntary compliance by other retail establishments and smaller supermarkets. Rather than
relying on a list of participating stores, consider encouraging every store you shop at to provide this service. And if you
have not used reuseable bags in the past, give them a try. Most people find reuseable bags to be very user friendly and
an improvement over both paper and plastic bags. If you place recently emptied bags at the door, you are less likely to
forget to take them back to your car and more likely to have them with you when you are shopping.
PROPANE TANKS (SMALL TANKS OF BBQ GAS)
Small tanks are accepted at no charge at Fresno City Fire Stations. Several private businesses operate exchange
programs for a fee. These are usually located in front of supermarkets and “home” and hardware stores.
RAILROAD TIES/TELEPHONE POLES/TREATED WOOD
Wood treated with creosote, arsenic, lead paint, preservatives and other chemicals is considered a hazardous waste and
is not accepted at local landfills. Call for disposal options.

Some composite shingles may contain asbestos. Special testing, packaging and noticing may be required before you can
dispose of this item. Call for details before you start this kind of project.

SHARPS (NEEDLES/LANCETS)
While it will be legal until July 2008 for those who medicate themselves at home to dispose of sharps (needles
and lancets) in the landfill, it is not the recommended method. You are encouraged to bring sharps to the Household
Hazardous Waste Drop-off event for disposal, free of charge. Call for the date of the next event or to request a free sharps
disposal container, while supplies last.
SMOKE DETECTORS
The newer smoke detectors are free of any hazardous materials. It is legal to dispose of all types of smoke detectors in
your non-recyclable garbage.
THERMOSTATS/THERMOMETERS (CONTAINING MERCURY)
Many manufacturers will take back their own products for recycling. Call the company for information. Thermostats/
thermometers may be brought to a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off event.
