General Information about Sardinia Sardinia is an island of contrasts: the granite mountains of the interior against the powder white sand and turquoise sea around the coastline; the glamour of the Costa Smeralda against the mysteries of the island's ancient cultures... Sardinia has been populated since Neolithic times and has been home to many different cultures ever since. You can see the evidence of these successive layers of history all over the island. Located closer to Africa than Italy, Sardinia’s turquoise sea and white sandy beaches rival the tropics. Sant'Antioco & San Pietro, off the coast of South-‐western Sardinia, are charming islands as yet unspoiled by too much tourist development. The seaside resort of Santa Teresa di Gallura offers all the attractions of the coast, although without the glitz of the Costa Smeralda. Further east, Palau & Archipelago di la Maddalena are pretty laidback, too: the archipelago itself comprises a national park with a lot of island-‐
hopping opportunities. Away from the coast, the scenery can be similarly stunning with a pastoral quilt of forested mountain peaks, valleys of citrus groves and pastures of happily grazing cattle and sheep. The urban scene can be very interesting. Medieval Bosa in the west is incredibly picturesque with their pink-‐and-‐golden buildings flanking the river. Alghero, in Northern Sardinia, has a fascinating Catalan history (the language is still spoken here) and a delightful old centre; the lively town of Iglesias also retains an appealing Spanish legacy. Cagliari is historic and cosmopolitan at the same time, while the equally historic Oristano is very elegant. Traditional culture thrives in the heartland where the elderly women are still draped in black; here tourists are rare – stared at – but ultimately welcomed. 30

Across the landscape are scattered 7000 nuraghi, strange conical stone fortresses built by old Sardinians. Curious temples, tombs, mysterious menhirs and remains of entire Bronze Age villages. Sardinia distinguishes itself in the kitchen with hearty pastas and a love for pungent local cheeses, like pecorino and smoked ricotta. Sardinians also produce notable wines and a head-‐splitting firewater, filu e ferru. July and August are packed with tourists and during the winter the island goes into hibernation (many restaurants and hotels are closed). The best times of the year to visit are in the spring, when the wildflowers are in bloom, and during the early autumn when the temperatures are still pleasantly warm and most of the tourists have left. 31

Bonifacio
History We have tried to present this magnificent walled city in brief, but that is virtually impossible. Prehistoric period Bonifacio has two prehistoric sites of some importance: the ancient cave shelter of Araguina-‐ Sennola near the village of Capello on Route N96 just north of the city and a chambered tomb of Vasculacciu further north near Figari. The first is the site of the notable Lady of Bonifacio, a female burial carbon-‐dated to about 6570 BC, which is either late Mesolithic or Early Neolithic, and the second belongs to the Megalithic Culture and is dated to the Middle Neolithic. The alignment of the two and the extensive use of chart from Monte Arci in Sardinia show that the Bay of Bonifacio was a route to inland Corsica from the earliest times. Roman period The only record of southernmost Corsica in Roman times comes from the geographer Ptolemy. He reports the coordinates of Marianum Promontory and town, which, plotted on a map, turn out to be the farthest south of Corsica. After listing the people of the east coast he states that the Subasani (ancient Greek Soubasanoi) were "more to the south." The people do not appear subsequently and the town and promontory have not been identified, nor do any Roman roads point to it. The only official road, the Via Corsica, ran between the Roman castra of Mariana and Aleria on the east coast and further south to Pallas, according to the Antonine Itinerary. Ptolemy places 39

Pallas unequivocally on the east coast north of Marianum. Although unrecorded tracks and paths to the far south are possible, it is unlikely they would have carried any significant Roman traffic. Maritime traffic through the strait however was significant and it could hardly have neglected the fine harbour at Bonifacio. The most popular choice for Marianum Promontory therefore is Cape Pertusato, southernmost point of Corsica island, about 9 kilometres (6 mi) east of the harbour, with Bonifacio itself as Marianum town. A second possibility would be the first century AD Roman ruins adjoining Piantarella Beach near the village of Ciappili and next to the grounds of Sperone golf course, a recreational suburb to the west of Bonifacio, but those ruins appear to represent a Roman villa and the beach though eminently suitable for recreation is of little value as a port. More likely the villa belonged to a citizen of Bonifacio as Marianum. Tuscan period Corsica was taken from the Roman Empire in 469 AD by Genseric, king of the Vandals, and recovered by the Eastern Empire in 534. The Lombards having taken it again in 725, Charlemagne (Defender of the Faith) cleared them out by 774 and handed the island over to the Papacy, which had been the most powerful complainant of the island's devastation by Germanics. Starting in 806 the Moors of Spain began to contend for the island and held it for a short time but in 828 the Papacy assigned its defence to the margrave of Tuscany, a powerful state of the Holy Roman Empire nominally under the Kingdom of Italy. The city in evidence today was founded as a fortress by and subsequently named after Boniface II of Tuscany in 828. He had led a naval expedition to suppress the Saracens of North Africa and returned to build an unassailable fortress and naval base from which the domains of Tuscany could be defended at the outermost frontier. Most of the citadel postdates the 9th century or is of uncertain date but Il Torrione, a round tower, was certainly part of the original citadel. 40

Geography The southern coast in the vicinity of Bonifacio is an outcrop of chalk-‐white limestone, precipitous and sculpted into unusual shapes by the sea. Slightly further inland the limestone adjoins the granite of which the two islands, Sardinia and Corsica, are formed. The port of Bonifacio is placed on the Bay of Bonifacio, a drowned ravine of a fjord-‐like appearance separated from the sea by a finger-‐like promontory 1,500 meters (4,900 ft.) long and 200 meters (660 ft.) wide. In prehistoric postglacial times when sea levels were low and the islands were connected, the ravine was part of a valley leading to upland Corsica. The city of Bonifacio is split into two sections. The vieille ville (old town), or la Haute Ville (the Upper city), on the site of a citadel, is located on the promontory overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. The citadel was built in the 9th century with the foundation of the city. The Citadel has been reconstructed and renovated many times since its construction and most recently was an administrative centre for the French Foreign Legion. Today it is more of a museum. Historically most of the inhabitants have resided in the Haute ville under the immediate protection of the citadel. Entrance and mooring All berths will be in the town port. ECC Rib(s) will guide you at the entrance of the port at the Bonifacio straights. Berthing instruction VHF 9 and/or verbal instructions. In the port follow the instructions of the mooring assistants. There will be 2-‐3 mooring assistants available. ONLY TWO boats may enter for mooring at the same time. 41

Santa Teresa di Gallura
Santa Teresa is placed at the tip of northern Sardinia on the western border of the Gallura area. It rises on the narrow natural inlet of Porto Longonsardo. The Longosardo tower rises on the rocky cape overlooking the sea. It was erected in the XVI century during the Aragonese period, and has a view, which takes, in both the Bay of Porto Longone and in the background, the white cliffs that surround the Corsican city of Bonifacio. The city is one of several possible locations for the ancient city of Tibula. It has a population increasing to 10,000 -‐ 15,000 with summer tourism. The main town square has various tourist shops and restaurants; many of these close in the off-‐season. Immediately to the north of the town is Rena Bianca, Santa Teresa's beach. The marina is very well shielded, good prices and services. There are plenty of shopping opportunities in town. 44

La Maddalena
ARCHIPELAGO LA MADDALENA a NATIONAL PARK: WELCOME TO PARADISE! La Maddalena Town La Maddalena is the largest town in the Maddalena archipelago, just 2 kilometres from the northeastern shore of Sardinia and sitting in the Straits of Bonifacio, between Sardinia and Corsica. The focal point of pedestrian activity is found around Piazza Umberto I (formerly known as Piazza Comando-‐the older generation of natives in town still commonly refer to the piazza by its original name). There is an adjacent via (Garibaldi) that connects the port (Banchina Commerciale I) facing the Island of Santo Stefano and Piazza Umberto I with a city hall. Via Garibaldi is surrounded by commercial shops, restaurants, and bars. La Maddalena now derives much of its income from tourism. The only method of traveling to La Maddalena is by boat and with car ferries, from nearby Palau and from the Italian mainland. The natives of La Maddalena speak a Sardo-‐Corsican dialect known as Maddalenino. A comprehensive survey on the dialect, including a concise history of the island and its people, can be found in Renzo De Martino's Il dizionario maddalenino: Glossario etimologico comparator. The island of Maddalena is renowned for its beaches; it is characterized by rocky granitic terrain and has some ancient fortifications. Spalmatore and Bassa Trinita are two popular beaches. It is connected by causeway with the nearby island of Caprera, famous as the residence of the Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi. La Maddalena has undergone many name changes: the Romans named it Ilva, Fussa and Bucina and in the Middle Ages the island was known as "Bicinara" before being given the name of Santa Maria Magdalena in the 16th century. After this it finally became known as La Maddalena 47

The Maddalena archipelago, is known from archaeological evidence to have been occupied in prehistoric times, but its written history begins with the Roman Empire. With the fall of the Roman Empire the islands were completely abandoned until the 12th century, when Benedictine monks founded small communities there. The islands were the object of a dispute between the Republics of Pisa and Genoa in the 12th century. In 1584 all the monasteries on the islands were destroyed by one of the Ottoman raids. In the 17th century shepherds began to bring their flocks to the islands in the winter months. Its location in the Strait of Bonifacio, through which much maritime traffic must pass, has turned the archipelago into a strategic military position. In 1767 it was occupied by the Savoy-‐Piedmontese. The nucleus of the present town of La Maddalena emerged then. In 1793 a French expedition, in which Napoleon Bonaparte took part, unsuccessfully tried to occupy the island. It was the first combat experience of Napoleon Bonaparte. During all the Napoleonic Wars Admiral Horatio Nelson used the archipelago of La Maddalena as a base for his fleet in actions against the French. A base was established here by the Italian Regia Marina (Royal Navy) in 1887. In 1943, during World War II, Benito Mussolini was briefly held prisoner here. 48

CALA GAVETTA From 1972 through 2008, there was a U.S. Naval Support Activity base as well as a NATO base on the nearby island of Santo Stefano. The NATO base housed an Italian Navy barracks and it served as the home port for several US Navy submarine tenders over the years, ending with the departure of the USS Emory S. Land, which set sail for its new home port of Bremerton, Washington. The US Naval Support Activity officially closed in January 2008, ending the 35-‐year US presence in La Maddalena. 49

Porto Cervo
Porto Cervo is one of the most prestigious tourist areas in Gallura on Sardinia northwestern coast. Resorts such as Cala di Volpe, Liscia di Vacca and Baja Sardinia are now considered very sought-‐after tourist destinations. It is a village of multi-‐coloured buildings, recently built in front of the natural port and the surrounding hills. The new harbour is equipped with the most modern infrastructures for international marine traffic. The wharves and quays are the private property of Porto Cervo Spa and therefore fees must be paid for docking and enjoying the use of the facilities. The Port is visible from the sea and makes reference to Capo Ferro with a lighthouse indicating north of Porto Cervo. Porto Cervo is ideal for tourists who are looking for a sophisticated holiday with comprehensive sporting activities and stunning scenery. Accommodations all over the village are mostly four and five star hotels. There are not any beaches in Porto Cervo. Instead, there is a little sand near the harbour. But tourists can find sandy bays to the north and south of this heavily indented coast. In the village, guests can enjoy golf and tennis as sporting activities. They could also opt for boat excursions to the weirdly shaped rocks and prehistoric tombs near the town of Arzachena. Summers tend to attract lovely warm days and crowds of millionaires and luxury yachts, especially to the prestigious Yacht Club at Porto Cervo. Porto Cervo was fully discovered in the '60s by Prince Karim Aga Khan, who was fascinated by the beauty of this stretch of Gallura. He decided to create the Costa Smeralda Consortium, with the aim of increasing and enhancing the natural beauty of the territory. 51

The Consortium is based in Porto Cervo, which represents its beating heart. Over the years, the area has managed to gain a prominent position in the international scene. Today, it is the symbol of Costa Smeralda and it is a home to luxury tourism and VIPs, trendy pubs, restaurants and yachts, as well as a privileged place for the international jetsetters. The famous Piazzetta and the small streets that wind through the centre of the town are full of luxury boutiques and jewellers of the most prestigious names. The architecture reflects the typical structures of Gallura and the buildings that appear very simple on the outside, conceal finest hotels and exclusive villas. All this is surrounded by scenery of rare beauty, where the transparency and colours of the sea are the real protagonists. Yacht Club Costa Smeralda The Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS) was founded on 12th May 1967 by H.H. the Aga Khan, Andrè Ardoin, Giuseppe Kerry Mentasti and Luigi Vietti as a non-‐profit making sporting association for fellow sailing enthusiasts and with a view to promoting related activities. The sporting events organized by the Club and the victories won by Members flying the Club's burgee have helped to establish the YCCS' position at the forefront of international yachting. Today the YCCS enjoys reciprocal agreements with the Yacht Club di Monaco and the New York Yacht Club. The YCCS is represented by the Board of Directors headed by its President, Princess Zahra Aga Khan, and by the Vice President, Roberto Kerkoc. The Commodore, Secretary General and Sports Director also manage the Club's social and sporting activities. 52
