KIEV/BALACLAVA: Ukraine mobilised for war
on Sunday, after Russian President Vladimir
Putin declared he had the right to invade,
creating the biggest confrontation between
Moscow and the West since the Cold War.
“This is not a threat: this is actually the
declaration of war,” said Ukraine’s Prime
Minister Arseny Yatseniuk, head of a proWestern government that took power when
Russian ally Viktor Yanukovich fled last
week. Putin obtained permission from his
parliament on Saturday to use military force
to protect Russian citizens in Ukraine, spurning Western pleas not intervene.
Russian forces have already bloodlessly seized Crimea — an isolated Black
Sea peninsula where Moscow has a naval
base. On Sunday, they surrounded several small Ukrainian military outposts
there and demanded the Ukrainian troops
disarm. Some refused, although no shots
were fired.

DELHI HOTELS RANKED
AMONG WORST: SURVEY
Press Trust of India
NEW DELHI: Hotels in Delhi are considered
as one of the worst in the world as per the
trivago Reputation Ranking of 100 destinations which places them in the 90th position,
while those in Mumbai have fared better.
The ranking is based on over 82 million
reviews compiled by Trivago from over 200
online booking websites. Trivago is one of
the largest online hotel search sites, which
compares rates at over 700,000 hotels on over
200 booking sites worldwide.
“Mumbai took the 65th position with a
score of 78.90% whereas Delhi was placed
on the 90th position in the list with a score
of 77.70%,” a recent trivago Reputation
Ranking report said.
It considers hotels with over 60 reviews
and cities with over 130 hotels. Many
other Asian destinations, including Kuala
Lumpur was ranked 94, Pattaya (Thailand)
95, Singapore 97, Bandung (Indonesia)
98, Jakarta (Indonesia) 99 and Manila

Addressing a crowd of more than 35,000 at
Kanpur’s Ramlilla Maidan, Kejriwal asked
if there was a Modi wave in the country.
“When I was leaving Delhi for the road
show I was told there is Modi-wave in the
country. After I travelled to more than 12
assembly constituencies in UP on Saturday,
I didn’t find any wave. If there is so called a
Modi-wave, it’s in the television channels,”
he said. There is a wave of anger in the country and certainly not the Modi wave, he said.
He brought in the issue of gas pricing,
the role of the Congress party in it and the
Modi’s silence. “I have written letter to the
Modi asking him why he is silent on the gas
price issue, which is set to increase from
April 1, but he has not replied,” he said.
“I know why he has not replied, it is
because he uses Ambani’s helicopters. Now
if he uses his helicopters would Ambani ask
the gas prices to be raised further,” he said.
Questioning the Gujarat development
model, Kejriwal said he would like to learn
about it when he will be in Gujarat from
March 5th to 8th.

Cabinet rejects ordinance
route for anti-graft bills
HT Correspondent
NEW DELHI: The Union cabinet on Sunday
rejected the ordinance route to clear some
anti-graft legislations being pushed by
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi.
The cabinet, however, cleared Jat reservation. Earlier in the day, the CPI (M) wrote
to President Pranab Mukherjee, saying
the ordinance route amounted to an antidemocratic and partisan exercise.
Gandhi had pressed for passing six anticorruption bills in the just-concluded Winter
Session in Parliament, which was marred
by protests over the Telangana bill.
Of them, only the Whistleblowers
Protection Bill was passed in Rajya Sabha
on the last day on February 21. Thereafter,
Gandhi had indicated that ordinances could
be issued on anti-graft bills which could not
be passed in Parliament. Gandhi’s clamour
for the bills ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha
elections had drawn flak from the Bharatiya

Gujarat riots in jobs of Intelligence Bureau
and CISF.
In two separate advertisements, published ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, the
Home Ministry said upper age limit up to
five years is relaxable to the children and
dependents of victims in the communal riots
of 2002 in Gujarat.
The Intelligence Bureau is
seeking applications to fill up 514 posts of

MULAYAM WOOS MUSLIMS
Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh
Yadav reached out to Muslims, intensifying
his attack on the Bharatiya Janata Party’s
prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi,
at a rally on Sunday.
“They apologise after mass killing of
Muslims,” he said, in a reference to the
2002 Gujarat riots under Modi’s watch as
chief minister.
Mulayam, who is talked up by his party
activists as a prime ministerial frontrunner,
said he was the only leader to visit Gujarat
after the 2002 riots. He recalled Modi had
asked him not to come to Gujarat.
The UP strongman added, “Only the
Samajwadi Party cares for Muslims.
Muslims know that the SP won’t tolerate
injustice against them.”
Mulayam did not spare the Congress
either, targeting party president Sonia
Gandhi, who is an MP from Rae Bareli.

2 MINUTES Chinese boy stabs self for scoring just 99%
Press Trust of India
BEIJING: In a shocking incident, a 9-yearold boy in China inserted four sewing
needles into his stomach as a form of
self-punishment for scoring ‘only’ 99% in
his exam.
Doctors in Heilongjiang Province spent
over two hours removing the sewing needles
that were buried in the child’s stomach.
The boy’s father found lumps on his son’s
stomach while bathing him, but the boy
was not letting him check closely, ‘Global
Times’ reported.
However, the boy suffered intense stomach
pain and was admitted to The 2nd Affiliated
Hospital of Harbin Medical University.
The youngster said he had pierced
his stomach with the sewing needles as
a punishment for not scoring 100 per cent
in his final exams as he did previously, the
report said.
The Chinese boy struck himself with two
sewing needles at the start of the winter
holiday and another two as the new term
was about to begin, the boy said.
Surveys have shown that pressure to suc-
ceed sets in early for Chinese students, so
much so that one in four secondary students

The report said China’s students were
ranked as the most stressed in the world
in 2009, with high school students having

CRISIS The Prime

declaration of war
Agence France-Presse
KIEV: Ukraine’s Prime Minister Arseniy
Yatsenyuk on Sunday warned his crisishit country was on the “brink of disaster”,
accusing Russia of declaring war in a bleak
appeal to the international community.
“This is the red alert, this is not a threat,
this is actually a declaration of war to my
country,” he told reporters in English, a
day after Russia’s parliament approved the
deployment of troops to Ukraine.
“If President Putin wants to be the president who started a war between two neighbouring and friendly countries, between
Ukraine and Russia, he has reached his
target within a few inches. We are on the
brink of the disaster.” US leader Barack
Obama has branded Russia’s parliament
vote a “violation of Ukrainian sovereignty”
and told his Russian counterpart Vladimir
Putin in a phone call that Moscow’s reported
deployment of troops outside bases that it
leases from Ukraine in the Crimea peninsula
had broken international law.
Yatsenyuk on Sunday appealed to the
international community. “We believe that
our Western partners and the entire global community will support the territorial
■
integrity and unity of Ukraine and will do
everything they can in order to stop the
military conflict provoked by the Russian
Federation,” he said.

‘Pakistani man who killed kin inspired by film’
Press Trust of India
LAHORE: A Pakistani man who took his
life after allegedly killing seven members of his family said in his suicide
note that he had taken a cue from a
Hollywood movie.
“I watched a Hollywood movie
in which a distressed man commits
suicide after killing all his family
members,” Nazir Ahmed, a resident of
Lahore, said in the note.
“As I wanted to punish my family
members for showing no respect to
me, the movie gave me an idea how to
execute my plan,” said the note, which
police have sent for forensic analysis.
Eight members of the family - including Ahmed, his two brothers and their
wives, and three children - were found
ABHIMANYU SINHA
dead in a house in Jauhar Town last
week. Police found the suicide note of
Ahmed, whose body had nomarks of
injuries. “Forensic experts have confirmed that Ahmed’s fingerprints were
on the suicide note and a diary from
which a page was removed to write the
note,” Crime Investigation Agency head
Umer Virk said.
“The same fingerprints were found
on strips of tablets that were used to
put the members of the family to sleep,”
he said. The evidence indicated Ahmed
allegedly killed his kin before he committed suicide, Virk said. After putting
them to sleep, Ahmed allegedly smashed
their heads with a hammer.
Ahmed, a chemical engineer by profession, was suffering from cancer. He
was unmarried.
“I am going to die as the cancer is at
the last stage. My brothers and their
wives do not treat me well. Their children also show no respect to me,” the
suicide note said.

In the paper presented today at the seminar on ‘Traditional versus Modern education in Muslims’, chairman of Institute of
Objective Studies Mohammad Manzur Alam
said “Muslims have the highest percentage of individuals who have never attended
any school.”
This was “most prominent amongst
Muslim OBC children in the age group of
6 to 14,” he said. However, he said that “some
improvements have been recorded in certain spheres in recent years but it will take
generations for the Muslim community to
achieve present targets.”
The two-day seminar which was attended
by academician from all over the country has
called for the “implementation of the Sachar
Committee recommendations.”

Gender wise, no significant difference
was found between the performance of
boys and girls in language. The only exceptions were Madhya Pradesh where the boys
showed better performance and Kerala and
Puducherry where the girls did better.
However, survey also indicates that a
significant proportion of children of class

DHAKA: Shahid Afridi smashed two consecutive sixes off Ravichandran Ashwin
as Pakistan defeated arch-rivals India by
one wicket in Dhaka on Sunday, virtually
knocking the World Cup champions out of
the Asia Cup.
Pakistan, chasing India’s 245-8, needed
nine runs off the last four balls after losing their way from a seemingly winning
position to slump from 200-4 to 236-9 at the
Sher-e-Bangla stadium.
But the seasoned Afridi sealed his side’s
win with two mighty hits off the next two
deliveries to keep Pakistan afloat in the fivenation tournament with their second win
in three matches.
India, who suffered their second defeat in
three games, are unlikely to make the final
on March 8 even if they beat Afghanistan
in their last match on Wednesday.
Afridi returned unbeaten on a quickfire
34 off 18 balls, studded with three sixes and
two boundaries, but the victory was set up
by all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez.

LONDON: Two moments of magic in the
space of two second-half minutes helped
Manchester City to a 3-1 victory over
Sunderland in the English League Cup final
at Wembley on Sunday.
Manuel Pellegrini’s favourites were trailing to Fabio Borini’s 10th minute strike
for Sunderland and a shock looked on the
cards until Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri
intervened.
Jesus Navas completed the turnaround
late on. Toure curled in City’s equaliser after
55 minutes before Nasri thumped home the
winner to snatch the season’s first silverware
for Pellegrini’s title-chasing side.
It was City’s first League Cup title since
1976. “We needed to win today, it was very
important. And we deserved it the way
we played in the second half,” Toure told
Sky Sports.
“Today we showed we are a great team. I
think it was my best goal.” Sunderland spent
the opening five minutes entrenched inside
their own half as City, who scored 19 goals
en route to the final, moved the ball around
with ease on the lush turf.
But minutes later the ball was in the back
of the City net.
There seemed no imminent danger as
Borini closed down Vincent Kompany but
City’s skipper was guilty of over-complication and Borini robbed him of the ball before

and John O’Shea.
Phil Bardsley, who scored in Sunderland’s
semi-final penalty shootout win over United,
reacted superbly to deny Sergio Aguero a
certain goal but keeper Vito Mannone was
not required to make any outstanding saves.
Sunderland were always dangerous on the
counter-attack and could have doubled their
lead when Borini ran through on goal from
a suspiciously offside position but Kompany
recovered to nick the ball away as the Italian
cocked his leg to shoot.
Ki Sung-yueng, part of the Swansea
City side to lift the trophy last season, let

his dipping strike over the crossbar. Then
the wheels fell off Sunderland’s bandwagon.

STOKE, ENGLAND: Stoke added another notch to an
impressive list of upset results this season as it
beat Arsenal 1-0 on Saturday to hurt the
Gunners’ bid for the English Premier League
title. Jonathan Walters’ penalty 14 minutes
from time after Laurent Koscielny was penalized for handball was enough to give Stoke
all three points. Mark Hughes’ team has
beaten Chelsea and Manchester United at
home this season, as well as drawing with
Manchester City. Arsenal manager Arsene
Wenger had not won in his previous seven
visits to Stoke’s Brittania Stadium.

LONDON: FIFA has reportedly lifted the
ban and officially authorised the
wearing of head covers for religious
reasons during football matches,
after two-years of trial. The decision,
which was made following a meeting of the International Football
Association Board (IAFB) in Zurich,
will apply to male and female players playing football for various
teams worldwide. According to the
BBC, FIFA secretary general Jerome
Valcke said that men as well as
women players can cover their
heads to play and that it would be a
basic head cover of the same colour
as the team jersey. The ruling came
following a two-year trial, which
started in 2012 because the Iran
women’s team withdrew from an
Olympic qualification match against
Jordan in 2011, protesting against
their not being allowed to wear
headscarves, the report added. ANI

NINTENDO EMULATOR FOR SMARTPHONES
There are many games avialable for smartphones. Still nothing can beat the excitement to
be albe to play nintendo games on your phone. It is an NES emulator for mobile devices.
Currently there are 5 games available – Croom, BoxBoy, Galaxy Patrol, Tetramino, and
Fighter F-8000. There is also the Dropbox Chooser where presumably you can select another NES game to play on your device. And it’s only avialable for mobile devices.

MAKE COOLEST GIFs
The most of GIFs on the Internet serve up the same pop culture references again
and again. “And Then I Was Like” is a more participatory medium where you can
quickly record and share your own reactions with your friends — a moving selfie
withing seconds. Record 3 seconds of video with your webcam. Edit the videothe
way you like and save it as an animated GIF. Now show your friends more interesting glimpses of your life.
NEWS IN 2 MINUTES
NOW, ICE CREAM THAT
PLAYS MUSIC WHEN LICKED
WASHINGTON: Two New York based
artists Emilie Baltz and Carla Diana
have created ‘Lickestra’, an ice
cream cone that plays music every
time the frozen dessert is licked.
Lickestra uses cones with embedded capacitive sensors. The cones
are placed on top of pedestal-like
boxes, and users stand in the boxes.
The ice cream when licked, causes
the sensors to send an electronic
signal to an attached Arduino board
that feeds a computer on which a
library of melody loops and beats is
stored, and that controls the audio
output, ‘Gizmag’ reported.

consumers of this web-based service to guard against the spread of
this virus which affects computer
systems and mobile phones using
the Android system. Two Android
versions- 4.3 known as ‘Jelly Bean’
and 4.4 called ‘Kit Kat’ are suspected to be affected.

SOON, SURF INTERNET
VIA WIFI IN THE SKY
CONNECTED New
technology is set to
provide uninterrupted
inflight Wifi
Agence France Presse
W
ifi in aircraft, hobbled in the past
by slow speeds, could soon take
off as new technology enables
passengers to surf the web as if
they were in a coffee shop, Internet executives say.
US-based Honeywell Aerospace and
Gogo, which supply inflight connectivity systems to airlines, are collaborating
with satellite giant Inmarsat to implement
the “first global high-speed broadband for
the skies” dubbed the Global Xpress (GX)
Aviation network.
Briand Greer, president of Honeywell
Aerospace Asia Pacific estimates that
around seven to eight percent of airlines
currently offer wireless connection, but
says this number is expected to grow
to 25% by 2018.
Inflight wifi can now enable download
speeds of up to 50 megabits per second,

Greer said.
Onboard wifi is not a new idea — European
carrier Lufthansa debuted Conexxion by
Boeing’s system in 2004.
When flying over land, planes use telecommunication towers to transmit Internet signals but during long-haul flights, when they
fly over large expanses of water, consistent
connectivity becomes a problem.
In those cases, a satellite network
is needed.
In December last year, Inmarsat launched
the first of three satellites that will serve
the GX network. Air China will be the first
airline to test it, on its A330 fleet in the second
quarter of 2015.
HOROSCOPE
Aries (Mar 21-Apr 20): You may
get mentally perturbed over an
issue that has rankled you for
long. Property booked by you is
likely to come into your
possession soon. A senior’s guidance is set
to make your task easier at work.
Libra (Sep 24-Oct 23):There is no
point in getting oversensitive to
issues that don’t directly
concern you. It may be difficult
to make a family youngster see reason,
but keep at it. A refreshing change is in
the offing.
Taurus (Apr 21-May 20): Getting
to know someone better may
help clear previous
misunderstandings. There is
much what someone may contribute at
work, so welcome it. You will find the family
more than supportive in your endeavours.
Scorpio (Oct 24-Nov 22): Staking
claim to something that is your
creation is important, before it is
claimed by someone else. An
issue regarding someone in the family is
likely to become clear soon. You will find
the day fruitful on the professional front.
Gemini (May 21-Jun 21): You may
have to train your mind for not
taking things, lying down.
Getting overlooked at work for
something prestigious may be hurtful, but
take it in your stride. Financially, your bank
balance is set to grow.
Sagittarius (Nov 23-Dec 21): You
remain unruffled in the face of
adversity, but it is important to
think up lasting solutions to the
problems facing you. Don’t keep anything
important pending today at work, as you
may get hauled up for it.
Cancer (Jun 22-Jul 22): You are
set to gain an edge at work to
score over rivals. Keep things
simple, if you want to enjoy life.
A religious or marriage ceremony is likely
to be planned at home. Things look up at
work, as you get in line for promotion.
Capricorn (Dec 22-Jan 21):
Something entrusted to you may
take more time than anticipated.
Your progress at work may be
slow, but it will be devoid of mistakes.
Financial planning done beforehand will
help you keep your expenses in check.
Leo (Jul 23-Aug 23): Let things
take their own course, as
manipulation may spoil the case
for you. Bide your time and you
are certain to have your way. Family will be
your priority today and togetherness will
give you immense fulfillment.
Aquarius (Jan 22-Feb 19): Your
sharp mind and an eye for detail
are likely to take you places on
the professional front. Options
open to you on the academic front may
appear a bit confusing at this point of time,
but make a considered choice.
Virgo (Aug 24-Sep 23): Maintain
the tempo of work to finish it
within the stipulated time.
Getting totally involved in a
project at work is indicated. You will remain
in the fray for something that you are very
keen on.
Pisces (Feb 20-Mar 20): You may
not find things in order at work,
but don’t start the blame game.
Good phase is set to start for
those pursuing academics. Time is
favourable for those looking for a suitable
career in their chosen field.
