www.HopeHCS.org • (800) 835-1673 March 2016: Batter Up! Twins Spring Training: A Volunteer-Led Fundraiser Once again, proceeds from the concession stands at the Minnesota Twins spring training will help us provide exceptional care and support to every individual and their loved ones as they fulfill life’s journey. These special events are only possible through the dedication and support of our wonderful volunteers. Thank you again for all that do to support Hope! Warm Regards, Samira K. Beckwith, Hope President and CEO Special Events A Fun Evening at this Year’s Pre-Game Warm Up Over 40 friends and volunteers came out to celebrate the kick-off of our annual Twins Spring Training fundraiser. We are especially grateful to Danny Barbosa (below, top left) from Hammond Stadium, Claudia Gilbertson for creating and presenting role descriptions via PowerPoint, Peggy Porter for helping with the t-shirt station, and all the other volunteers who helped this evening run smoothly. Special Events, Continued Friends of Hope: An Evening in Old Havana The Friends of Hope Committee hosted An Evening in Old Havana dinner at the Bonita Bay Club, raising more than $58,000 for Joanne’s House at Hope Hospice in Bonita Springs. Led by chairs Etta Smith, Mary Kozlowski and Joyce Kozlowski, the event hosted more than 100 guests who enjoyed ballroom salsa dancers, a cigar roller and a live auction featuring a trip to Havana. The event reunited many of the founding donors and supporters who championed Joanne’s House and helped Hope break ground on the site 11 years ago. Annual Hope Parkinson Symposium Over 400 guests attended our Symposium! We are grateful to our sponsors, FYZICAL Fitness and Harborside Event Center/City of Fort Myers for their generous support. Several volunteers attended to help with registration, nametags and goodie bags. Tuck In Volunteers Celebration A group of our Tuck In Caller volunteers gather together about once a month to enjoy a birthday luncheon. The most recent one was held at the Veranda restaurant in downtown Fort Myers. Volunteer Appreciation save the date • april 26 • broadway palm s U n i Jo r u O r fo r a e 1 Y ersary! Full, detailed training will be provided for anyone who is interested. The classes have recently expanded to include individuals who have more trouble with balance and mobility. You can be a huge help by providing them with navigation hints and encouragement (like the “corner men” you’ve seen in Rocky movies). This opportunity will first be available for the Saturday classes at 9:00 a.m. You will volunteer for approximately one hour at the FYZICAL Fitness location near Daniels and Metro Parkway in south Fort Myers. To learn more, call Michelle Martin, Hope Parkinson Program Coordinator at (239) 985-7727. Hope Chest Sales Floor Assistants and Cashiers in North Fort Myers We have urgent needs for extra help on the sales floor and at the cash register. Call Jane Davis at 652-1114 to volunteer. Flower Volunteers at North Fort Myers Community Center Last year, volunteers created and delivered 147 arrangements to homes and facilities throughout Cape Coral and North Fort Myers! Captains, Cooks, Cashiers & More at Hope’s Baseball Fundraiser This is our 10th year of raising money for Hope through the concession stand during the Minnesota Twins Spring Training at Hammond Stadium. Anyone 16 years or older – not just Hope volunteers - can help. Please ask your family, friends, and neighbors to join us. Shifts run from February 29 through March 31. We still need several volunteers; check with your volunteer coordinator to find out which shifts need coverage. Please carefully consider your availability and commitment level before signing up. Cancellations are extremely difficult for coordinators and on-site volunteers. Volunteer Department Updates Record-Breaking Fort Myers Orientation We had a record number attend our February orientation class! In addition to 35 new volunteers, we had three members of the Legacy AmeriCorps program join us for additional education. VALOR Program Testimonial “Thank you for the Hope Honor Guard who came to visit George. Thank you also for all the wonderful gifts - the beautiful quilt made by the Hope volunteers, the adorable “buddy bear,” and also for the American Flag pins. We were grateful to the chaplain who ended with a nice prayer. It was a very moving morning for all of us.” ~ George’s Family Notice for Snowbirds or Anyone with a Change of Address/Phone If you’re back in Florida, let us know. If your address or phone number ever changes, let us know. When you’re planning to head north, let us know. Please call or e-mail your volunteer coordinator with up-to-date contact information! In Memoriam: Volunteer Nancy Foley Nancy passed away on February 7, 2016; she had been a volunteer with Joanne’s House since 2006. Nancy lived in Highland Woods and was an avid golfer. Her service will be held at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Bonita Springs on March 14 at 10:00 a.m. Continuing Education Comfort Care and Touch Program The first half of this class will provide best practices for addressing and interacting with individuals in our care, giving you a better understanding of the limitations they face with day to day activities. The second part will demonstrate techniques for reducing stress and anxiety through the power of touch. You’ll learn how to provide gentle hand massages and use warm face cloths. This is a great class for volunteers who work directly with the individuals in our care - or for those with close friends or family who are declining due to advancing age or illness. RSVP to your volunteer coordinator.
