EFFLORESCENCE
Director’s Note
My heartiest congratulations to the class of 2015! This is a special
year as it marks the 10th Anniversary for the School of Health
Sciences. Time really flies and we are now crossing a major milestone.
Looking back, I am tremendously proud of the school’s achievement
within this period of time. Our graduates are doing well based on the
Tracer Study of our first cohort of Nursing students who graduated in
2008. Approximately 66% of these graduates have completed their
undergraduate studies and obtained their degrees! As for our first
cohort of Optometry students who graduated in 2012, five of them
have completed their Master of Clinical Optometry and graduated in
April 2015.
In celebration of our 10th Anniversary, HS is organising a homecoming event on 23rd July 2015 for all alumni. It will
kick off with the annual HS Day concert and will be followed by an evening of activities including a dinner. Do join us
too! As a school we are also marking the 10th Anniversary by raising funds to purchase food for the needy. All staff
and students have been very enthusiastic and we look forward to giving back to society in this project.
In 2015, our facilities have expanded to include two new patient simulation laboratories, an operating theatre and
a nursing laboratory at Level 3 of Block 82. The additional state-of-the-art facilities make learning for our students
realistic and exciting. Having these labs at Level 3 also means that our outreach activities are consolidated at Level 3
and secondary students visiting HS will now have a seamless experience.
With the launch of SkillsFuture by the Deputy Prime Minister recently, there will be greater emphasis on lifelong
learning. Employers are urged to co-participate by releasing employees for upgrading of skills and also mentoring
employees. There will be plenty of opportunities for alumni to return to HS for either Specialist or Advanced
Diplomas and I look forward to welcoming you back.
We have had three great years together. It is our privilege to have journeyed with you. We are proud of those
moments when you persevered and overcame difficulties. We are prouder when you stretched yourselves and
reached for the stars. Credit goes to your family, loved ones and also to the HS academic and support staff who had
contributed to your development and learning.
My warmest wishes to all !
Dr Phang Chiew Hun

Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing)
My passion to join the healthcare industry developed
during my secondary school days. It all started with
an interest in first aid. Countless first aid duties gave
me a sense of satisfaction, and over time, interest
became passion. I wanted to do more; thus I enrolled
in the Nitec in Nursing which eventually led me to the
Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing) course in NP.
I chose NP because HS offers life science modules
which I believe will provide me with an edge over
others.
The highlights during my three years in HS were the
overseas trips. I went to Cambodia, China, Thailand
and Australia. Trips to developing countries had left a
mark in my heart, as they moulded my character and
developed my leadership skills. My learning was not
limited to the campus, as the world has become my
classroom.
I aspire to be an Advanced Practice Nurse (APN). As
an APN, I will have advance skills and knowledge to
care for my patients. I believe that my learning does
not only benefit me, as I also make sure that my care
rendered to patients will be the best!

Diploma in Optometry
During the three years in the Diploma in Optometry
course, I enjoyed the balanced theory and practical
lessons that provided me with ample training
to conduct full eye examinations for the public
professionally and confidently. The 15 weeks
internship allowed me to be exposed to the working
life of an optometrist, while the many off-campus
industry training classes continually upgraded my
product knowledge. My overseas trips to Laos and
Vietnam for the Youth Expedition Project were the
most memorable and meaningful times during my
polytechnic life.
Looking back at these three years, it was definitely
challenging and demanding to manage between the
heavy school work as well as my CCA responsibilities.
I am glad that I had always tried to give my best in
everything that I did so that I would not regret no
matter what the end result would be.
Moving on from NP, I will definitely miss my course
mates and my friendly lecturers. I would like to thank
my course mates for making my poly life enjoyable
and also my lecturers for pushing all of us toward the
finish line. Happy graduation!

Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing)
I spent my formative years as a young teenager
volunteering in an orphanage with my family in
Chiang Rai, Northern Thailand. Having assisted
medical teams that offered health check-ups to
the locals and villagers, I saw that medical care
transcends barriers, both in culture and language.
Care has a language of its own, and I too wanted
to be equipped with it. My passion in nursing was
then sparked, which had driven me to pursue a
Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing) here at NP.
With nurturing lecturers, an excellent curriculum, a
host of opportunities and an optimal environment
for learning, I was stretched but moulded to be a
frontline 21st century nurse I am today. Additionally,
the student-centric culture at HS has cultivated a
sense of belonging in us such that it will always be a
second home to me.
I will always cherish the memories shared with friends
over studying and doing group projects, as well as
the life stories we had exchanged while huddling
over our favourite spot at block 81 throughout my
three years in HS. The recurring echo of a simple
“thank you, missy” and the fulfilment of touching
the lives of my patients shall continue to be a source
of inspiration to me. As I continue to pursue my
career in nursing, I will be reading nursing as an
undergraduate at King’s College London on the
MOHH Healthcare Merit Award. I look forward to
practice evidence-based nursing and continually be
an advocate for my future patients. Thus, the journey
has not ended here, but actually marks the start of
another exciting one!

Diploma in Optometry
To be a health care professional was my childhood
dream. This dream was made a reality when I joined
the Diploma in Optometry course in NP. Throughout
these three years, I had made countless memories;
from the freshmen orientation week in year one, to
mentor-mentee outings and overseas trips. Despite
the heavy curriculum in optometry, I did have my
fair share of fun from all the endless opportunities to
attend enrichment programmes, leadership camps
and school events. The significant highlight of my
three-year journey would be the Youth Expedition
Project (YEP) trips to Laos and Vietnam. These trips
had inspired me to give back to society by helping
those in need. The global exposure has also made me
treasure what I have.
Optometry has equipped me with the knowledge and
skills to bring about awareness on the importance
of eye care. I believe that these three years have
developed me; not only academically but also in my
personal development. Optometry is definitely not
an easy course to study, but with hard work and
perseverance, I was sure that achievement would
follow. Lastly, as we have come this far to graduation,
may perseverance be our fuel towards the destination
of success.

Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing)
After my ‘O’ levels, I was hospitalised for months due
to an unknown cause of fever. Spending so much
time in the hospital and seeing the thin line between
life and death made me understand that life really is
short. It made me believe that one should follow their
passion and fulfill their dreams.
As a patient, I received a lot from the nurses who
cared for me. I decided to give back to the society
by caring for patients and continue to spread the
warmth and care that I had received from these
loving angels.
Three years of nursing education in HS had not only
helped shape my passion and dreams into reality,
but also forged many beautiful friendships and
memories. Through the clinical attachments that I
had experienced, my passion for nursing continues to
grow. Nursing is no doubt hard work but I have never
once regretted my choice. Being able to do what I
truly enjoy and provide help to patients who are in
need, gives me the most rewarding feeling that I have
ever felt.
Nursing has inspired me to aspire.

Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing)
I have always been inspired to serve and help people
even at a very young age. When I was considering the
course of study that may eventually determine my
career in the future, the prospect of interacting and
caring for the sick and needy propelled my decision
to become a nurse. After I started the Diploma in
Health Sciences (Nursing) course, I realised that
nursing involved not only clinical skills, but also
good knowledge in human biology and pathology.
These skills and knowledge really interest me, which
intensified my desire to become a proficient staff
nurse.
In HSN, I am grateful to have met very friendly and
helpful lecturers and course mates. There had been
times when I was feeling stressed. However, the
thought of the sick and needy drove me to work
even harder. I was also very touched that the people
whom I served and helped, were also the ones who
had given me moral support during my course of
study. I truly appreciate the people around me, and
I treasure the short amount of time we had shared
during the three years in HS. This has built not only
our education, but our also soul; to serve, with love.

Diploma in Optometry
My interest in studying optometry was largely
influenced by my family members who also had
a keen interest in the human eye. The Diploma
in Optometry had provided excellent learning
opportunities that include a fine balance of practical
and lecture sessions. By the end of the third semester,
we were equipped with the necessary skills to
conduct full eye examinations and the knowledge
to diagnose eye conditions. I felt a great sense of
satisfaction when examining patients’ eyes at the
optometry centre, because I was able to advise them
about their eye sight as well as ensure that they do
not have any sight threatening conditions.
The 15 weeks of internship, including the one week
hospital attachment, were enriching and valuable
experiences for me. During the hospital attachment,
I had the opportunity to experience examining eye
diseases that are not commonly seen. Apart from
the internship experience, I had the opportunities
to participate in study trips, industrial visits, and
exchange programmes, which were all exciting and
fruitful.
Throughout the three years of study in HS, I had
numerous chances to serve the community by
participating in eye screening events. I was able
to help the elderly and less fortunate, which were
heartwarming experiences for me. Learning to
become a health care professional is definitely not an
easy journey. However, I am grateful to our lecturers
who are always willing to help and guide me.

Diploma in Health Sciences (Nursing)
During my secondary school years, I worked as a
clinic assistant in a Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic.
I saw patients with different medical conditions and
the treatment modalities from the TCM perspective. I
soon developed an interest in health care. In my final
year of secondary school, there was a recruitment
drive to read nursing in Singapore. I signed up for it
because it would be a great opportunity for me to
learn a different set of skills which would enable me
to care for the sick.
What I loved most during my three years in HS was
the group study time I had outside the co-op shop.
It was nice to have like-minded peers because we
were very supportive of each other. There were days
when we just sat down after class and talked about
everything under the sun. At times, we had to mug
under our books. Once I start work in the hospital, I
will definitely miss these memories.
I see myself in the future as a nurse educator, and I
plan to pursue my undergraduate studies in a few
years when I have gained more clinical experience.
To my juniors, the future nurses: It is never easy to
be a nurse. However, after seeing the smiles and
patients recovering, you will definitely feel a sense of
satisfaction. Go for it!

Future Plans
Students joining Ngee Ann Polytechnic will undergo Education and
Career Guidance throughout the three years of studies. They will then be
better prepared for the workplace upon graduation.
In addition, Nursing students will have the opportunity to do their clinical
attachment overseas either in Taiwan or the Philippines for two weeks.
This overseas clinical attachment will provide opportunities for students
to work and learn in environments that are different and challenging. This
experience will prepare students to be more work-ready upon graduation.
First year Optometry students will also go for a class-trip to Malaysia
in June 2015. This class trip will be a mix of fun and learning through
bonding activities and visits to various eye-care related institutions and
companies. The trip is fully funded by Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Such a fully
funded trip will also be extended to the Nursing freshmen of 2015 in 2017
during Project P.
