Thunder Bay Walleye Club Newsletter JUNE 2016 PO Box 812 Alpena, MI 49707 Officers President Vice President Financial/Recording Sec Board of Directors Jim Leeseberg Dave Birmingham Dennis Burns Bill ONeil Richard Hubert Eric MacKenzie Kevin Cosbitt CLUB TOURNAMENTS Hubbard Lake – Launch DNR East Bay Sat May 7th 6PM – 2AM Weather again was an issue for the comfort side of fishing. Wind out of the north and cold temperatures greeted contestants all night long. 34 people fished and 27 weighed 5 fish. Hard body baits as well as crawler harnesses worked getting fish in the boat while some used leaches on jigs. Hubbard seems to produce well at night in the early spring and the worse the weather the better the bite. 1st goes to Mark and Matt Byce along with Jim Watts weighing 5 fish for 12.90 lbs. and big fish coming in at 3.67 lbs. This a long awaited first place for this team. 2nd is Bryan Kozlowski and Dillon Schellie for a total weight of 12.25 lbs. and big fish of the night at 3.80 lbs. 3rd is Jon Kruttlin, Bryan LaPine and Mike Travis weighing 11.56 lbs. 4th is Adam Birk and Bill Grove with 10.51 lbs. The 4th place boat receives a box of MEPPS trial baits for walleye. MEPPS would like feedback on these baits. Hubbard Lake tournament weights are always very close. Saginaw Bay - Launch AuGres DNR Sun May 22nd 7AM – 3PM Saturday was a great day on the Bay to prefish. Jackie Oliver and Denny Burns used up 22 gallons of fuel Saturday to find quality fish and did. You could go anywhere on the Bay with light winds and comfortable temps. Feeling confident for Sunday with wind out of the northeast at 10 to 15 we were greeted with a drastic change in the weather forecast. Wind did blow out of the northeast but the wind speed was much more. When we launched Sunday morning at 7 am the wind was forecasted at 15 to 25 with higher gusts. Waves built to 4 to 6 feet during the day so we stayed around the AuGres area. Those who ventured to their spots paid the price of pounding water but did bring in some good catches. Club Tournaments Continued Saginaw Bay 1st goes to Joe Krzyzaniak and Joe Kubiak both of the Saginaw area weighed 19.01 lbs. and big fish of the day at 5.68 lbs. 2nd is Justin Champagne and Jon Kruttlin weighing 5 fish for 16.55 lbs. and their largest is 4.25 lbs. 3rd is Vic Ross and Jerry Yarch weighing 5 fish 16.30 lbs. and their largest is 5.32 lbs. 4th for the Mepps trial baits for walleye is Jim Hall, Mike Karner, Danny Lewis and Chris Mulvahill weighing 5 fish for 12.39 lbs. with their largest fish at 4.86 lbs. As always on Saginaw Bay hard body baits are the key and crawler harnesses do well. MEPPS BAITS Mepps wants to get into the walleye bait business. Jim Leeseberg was contacted by Mepps rep and they shipped us enough walleye kits to give one away at the April and May meeting as well as each club tournament this summer. It was decided to award the kits as a 4th place finish on each club tournament. Mepps does want feedback on your fishing experience with their new baits so if you use them let them know.
