This classic comedy opens as a group of the gals has assembled for a game of
Trivial Pursuit in the apartment of divorced Olive Madison. And if the mess is any
indication, it’s no wonder that her husband left her, in addition to his gambling
problem. Late to arrive is Florence Unger, who the girls find out has just been
separated from her husband. Since she is very fastidious and none too relaxed,
they fear she might commit suicide, and go about locking all the windows. When
Florence arrives, she is scarcely allowed to go to the bathroom alone. As the
action unfolds, the clean-freak and the slob ultimately decide to room together with
hilarious results as The Odd Couple (female version) is born.

Required Parent Meeting for Behind-the-Wheel Participation
Car crashes are the leading cause of death among 16-19 year olds. Our community has been touched
by its own teen tragedies on local roadways. Partners for Safe Teen Driving is an initiative to reduce the
number of car crashes and save lives of teen drivers through parent awareness and education. This required
parent meeting targets parents as key players in influencing teens to drive safely and responsibly. The meeting will bring together parents, students, schools, law enforcement and community resources for an awareness campaign. The meeting agenda includes the following: •
•
•
•
An explanation of the Behind the Wheel program and the 40-Hour Parent/Teen Driving Guide with required log sheet.
Highlights of traffic laws pertaining to teens and the graduated licensing restrictions from the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office.
Information for Reducing the Risk from GEICO. The perspective of a bereaved parent.
Parents of students who are currently taking PE 10 and classroom driver education will be invited to
the Partners for Safe Teen Drivers meeting. If a student plans to take the optional course of Behind the Wheel
through Stafford Schools, the parent and student must attend the meeting. A student will not be allowed to
register for Behind the Wheel training without meeting all requirements, including the parent’s and student’s attendance at the meeting. Stafford County Schools is committed to working with parents to keep our students
safe and reduce teen crashes.
The following meeting dates are available to provide access to all parents. If the meeting at your
teen’s school is not convenient or timely, you are encouraged to attend a meeting at an alternate school site. The program is approximately ninety minutes long and begins at 7:00 p.m. The number one parent recommendation from the last two years’ participants has been to require the student to attend; therefore, the student is required to attend this meeting starting with the 2006-07 school year.

BPHS ~ PTSO
Dear Parents, Students and Staff,
We have many volunteer opportunities at BPHS and are in need of your time and talents. I encourage you to become an active partner by joining PTSO and volunteering at BPHS. Please send in
your Membership Form or stop by during open house and join in the fun! This year the cost is $5.00
for a family and $2.00 for staff members. Why become a member you ask? Well, it’s a proven fact
that students of families who are involved do better in school. The BPHS PTSO proudly supports the
staff and students. PTSO seniors may apply for the BPHS PTSO Scholarship. We are always seeking ideas and plans to help make our already awesome school even better. We have “Home of a Brooke Point Black Hawk” yard signs available and on sale for $5! This is a
great way to show your school spirit! People have asked me, how can we get one of those awesome signs? Let me tell you! If you forgot to pick up your sign at Open House, please just e-mail
me ([email protected]) and we’ll get you a sign! The staff was very appreciative of the back-to-school breakfast. Thank you to all who donated food
and volunteered. We will be hosting a Thanksgiving Dinner luncheon for the teachers and staff on
Tuesday, Nov. 4. If parents would like to help or donate an item please contact Deb Johnson at

National Teen Driver Safety Week
Dear Parents and Guardians:
Brooke Point High School joined high schools across the country by participating in National Teen
Driver Safety Week (NTDSW) this October 19th – 25th, 2008. National Teen Driver Safety Week is
designed to spotlight the number one cause of death to teens: car crashes.
The week’s activities were geared towards awareness and to help prevent teen crashes and injuries.
This week we focused on educating students to Drive Safe and Ride Safe. We highlighted the specific
risks around drivers and passengers. New research shows having just one friend in the car can double
the risk of a fatal crash for teen drivers.
At BPHS, we believe it’s important to support parents’ efforts to keep our new drivers safe. That
includes making sure parents know of the dangers and new research on this issue.
As part of the week’s events, we set up a booth in the Commons area and encouraged teens to
sign pledges to drive safe and responsibly. During all three lunch shifts, 522 teens participated by
signing pledges to drive safe and ride safe. Some of the activities that took place included Traffic
Safety Deputy Lee Peters playing a card game with kids that contained questions about driving and
traffic laws in Virginia. If the kids answered the question correctly they received a small prize. Several
students received safe driving pamphlets to include: Foul Weather driving, Deadly Distractions, Crash
Course, Aggressive driving and Breakdown. Several students visited the table and asked questions
that were driving and traffic related. The students were also able to view a Powerpoint slideshow of
traffic accidents in Virginia.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
Even if your teen isn’t driving, they are often passengers. It is important to start the conversation early
with your teen about riding with new drivers. Teens’ crash risk drastically drops six months after licensure
or 1,000 miles of experience. Use this information to set limits for your teen about passengers: Set a
rule about not riding with friends who don’t have this necessary experience. The Children’s Hospital
of Philadelphia and other national organizations recommend waiting until new drivers have at least six
months experience before adding a teen passenger.
If you’re interested in more information, contact Deputy C. R. Burgess, SRO at BPHS 540-658-6080

Deputy Carol R. Burgess
