GUILDERLAND FIRE DEPARTMENT, INC.

2013 YTD: 128
Firefighter of the year: Bob Meyers
The Guilderland Fire Department has served the district for eighty-two years with 38 active
members currently serving their community. The department maintains four fire apparatus,
two command vehicles, and one utility vehicle. Fire apparatus includes a 1992 Salisbury (Engine
27) and a 2002 American LaFrance (Engine 26) engine. Both are Class I engines that pump large
volumes of water and carry firefighting hose and ground ladders. Other apparatus includes a
2008 E-One 100 foot aerial ladder platform (Truck 29) and a 2007 Spartan Light Rescue Squad
(Squad 23) that contains a mobile air bank and the Jaws of Life. GFD holds an annual open house
on the Saturday at the start of Fire Prevention Week in October and we bring Truck 29 to the
Altamont Fair annually. Our fire apparatus and firefighters also support the YMCA’s health fair
and Triathlon, visit local schools, and participate in Guilderland’s community events. The GFD
Auxiliary sponsors a scholarship at Guilderland High School rewarding community service and
sponsors families in need at holiday time.

Organized March 23, 1938.
Covers town of Westerlo;
dispatched by Albany County 911 Dispatch Center.
Calls:
2013 YTD: 53
Sponsored a Recruitment and Retention grant awarded in July
2012, for $429,000 supporting the 12 Hilltown fire departments.
Grant was intended to hire two part time recruitment and retention
coordinators and provide new turnout gear, pager and physical for
each new firefighter brought in during the grant period. To date 38
of the targeted 48 firefighters have been recruited, the balance of the
funds to retain the current members serving the area.
On July 5th and 6th, 2013 Westerlo Fire celebrated its 75th Anniversary with a party at the Westerlo Town Park. The two day event
consisted of Firematic Competition, crafters, food vendors, apparatus displays and was capped off with Skeeter Creek and fireworks
sponsored by Hannay Hose Reels on Saturday night. The weekend
was a huge success thanks to many of our mutual aid companies and
surrounding departments who provided Fire Police and volunteer
help.

RENSSELAERVILLE VOLUNTEER AMBULANCE, INC.
Calls
2013 YTD: 105
The Town of Rensselaerville Volunteer Ambulance is an all volunteer service that covers Emergency Medical Calls for the entire
Town of Rensselaerville twenty four hours a day when coverage
is available. The squad is in desperate need of volunteers who are
willing to join and take the necessary training to be Emergency
Medical Technicians and volunteer for shift coverage. Usually coverage is 6 or 12 hour shifts and additionally whenever available.
Current membership consists of 13 active members and 3 associate members. Of the 13 members, 5 are EMT’s or higher and
8 are drivers. Needing 28 members (14 EMT’s and 14 drivers) to
cover each week of scheduling, one can see the need.
The Town of Rensselaerville Volunteer Ambulance, Inc. was
formed in 1973 and housed at the Town of Rensselaerville Highway
garage. Since that time, the squad built quarters located at the
intersection of Routes 352 and 357. Monthly meetings and drills
are held on the third Wednesday of each month. The squad has
one 2009 Road Rescue Ambulance.
Due to low membership, assistance is supplied by the Albany
County Sheriff’s ALS program and neighboring squads when
needed. We are grateful for this help.

firefighters also visit the Connections Program at B-K-W. In May and
October, the fire company hosts two Roast Beef Dinners. The Hilltown
Senior Citizens have two dinner meetings at the firehouse where the

Serious Fun
I
n the flow: A posy on her cheek and a redflounced skirt don’t keep Scarlett VanDerhyden,
3½, at left, from doing some serious work at the
Guilderland Fire Department’s open house on Saturday as a firefighter helps her shoot water to a target.
A boy in firefighter’s gear, at top, stays low, just like
real firefighters do, as he crawls through a maze
while Natalea LeFrancois, 8, at lower right, practices
using a fire extinguisher and the P.A.S.S system —
Pull, Aim, Shoot, Sweep — to quell flames for a bevy
of admirers. Others lined up to watch department
volunteers wield Hurst spreaders to pry open a car
door, at lower left, used in real emergencies to get the
injured out of a wrecked car.
