GREETINGS FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I had a great time in Kuala Lumpur visiting Mutiara International
Grammar School where I was made very welcome and visited all the
classes, attended their annual Fitness Run, tried lots of yummy food
and the shopping was great.
In the last newsletter we wrote about our Global Peace School
Ceremony happening on Friday 30th November. There will be a
formal ceremony assembly at 10.00 where the agreement will be
signed, certificate presented, United Nations flag presented and
cutting of the cake. After recess classes will be involved in a range of
peace activities and then the whole school will join together in a Peace
Train Trail followed by Sausage Sizzle. There is no cost to students.
Our end of year celebration of learning concert is based on our school
motto, Dream, Believe, Achieve. As our school gym has restricted
seating capacity we are having a morning and an evening concert
session.

Lawson from Hannaford Creative Landscapes will be holding another
information session in the Library at 3.15 on Thursday 6th December
so please pop in and have a look at the plans for our landscape
redevelopment.

GLA 10 — CRANES FOR THE GLOBAL PEACE
ASSEMBLY
Our class is making paper cranes for the Global Peace Assembly.
We got the idea from the Sadako Sasakis story. She folded 1000
paper cranes because she believed that folding the cranes would
give her a wish and make her better. In 1954 she was in hospital
with atom bomb disease also
known as a type of Leukaemia.
She folded 1600 paper cranes but
she died from her disease in 1955 at the age of 12.
We have been making paper cranes in all different colours.
Our goal is 100 but we hope to make more. We have been
practising . We have achieved our goal. We have also put
some in the office for everyone to see.

Boy over board.
In GLA10 we have been reading a book called Boy Overboard.
The book is about refugees and that not everywhere in the
world has peace. Refugees are people who move somewhere
else because it is dangerous for them in their home country.
Two of the children in the book, Jamal, Bibi and their parents
are smuggled to Australia because their parents ran school for
girls which was illegal in Afghanistan.

INTERVENTION PROGRAMS 2012
Congratulations to all students who participated in S.R.P.S’s Quicksmart Literacy,
Quicksmart Numeracy and the Intensive Reading Program. Our combined end of year
celebration will be held on Friday at 12.15 in week 9 in E 3/4.
We take this opportunity to give our thanks to our committed SSO tutors and parent
volunteers who make these programs a success: Andrea Jensen-Mrozek, Sonya Millar, Val
Barker, Bronwyn Stewart and Sue Ramsay.

FUNDRAISING 2012
Thank you to everyone for your support this year.
Fundraising Events this year included : a car boot sale,
Easter raffle, Footy tipping competition, ladies evening, 2
Discos, school photos, Father’s day stall and our first Quiz night.
In term 4 we provided a mail box for students to send cards to their friends in other
classes and letters to Santa. A big thank you to Graham Thomas and Dean Wadkins for
doing a fantastic job on the mail box and for all the helpers sorting the mail.
Our end of year Disco is on 7th December—tickets are $5-00 and can be ordered at the
front office.
Fundraising is a great way to raise extra money for the school and is used for the
benefit of all students. This year all money raised went toward computers and
accessories.
Fundraising is not only about raising money but volunteering your time or donating
items. We are always looking for new ideas—not only for raising funds but for the
enjoyment of the community and our students.
A lot of work and planning goes into these events and we would not be able to do this
without the valuable help of all our volunteers.
I would especially like to thank Sarah, Narelle, Sonja, Helena, Caroline, Alison, Cherie,
Jackie, Jade, Lucy, Sharon, Rebecca, Janet, Cathy, Jo and Leah.
A very big thank you for our sponsors: Woolworths, Seaford Hotel, Agatha’s, Mitre10,

much appreciated all the support I have received from Yannoula, Cathryn, Irene, Gail,
Cheryl and all the teachers throughout the year.
Please let’s not let fundraising become a thing of the past.

SNACKS WITH CHRISTMAS CHEER
With so many parties and get-togethers over
Christmas, New Year and the summer holidays there are plenty of opportunities for
the littlies to eat more of their “sometimes”
foods and drinks everyday!
If you’re looking for some healthier snack options that are
easy for kids to eat on the run, here are some tips:
Have fruit washed, sliced and ready to eat.
Freeze grapes for a refreshing, cool summer treat.
Festive Fruit! Pre-cut fruit is great for younger kids – have it
prepared on the table or make up small kebabs. Small
tubs of fruit canned in natural juice are also a great option.
Try putting out small bowls or platters of chopped fruit in
Christmassy colours (i.e red and green)
Offer vegetable sticks with reduced fat dips.
Keep some reduced fat natural or fruit yoghurt in the fridge.
Top dry biscuits with tomato, avocado or reduced fat
cheese.
Encourage kids to drink water as often as possible and drink
sweet drinks like fruit juices, juice drinks, cordials, soft drinks
and flavoured milk only occasionally as treats.

IGNITE PROGRAM
Ignite is a program for students with High
Intellectual Potential (SHIP).
Aberfoyle Park High School is the only DECD
Special Interest School in the southern suburbs
that offers a SHIP program tailored to suit the
needs of Gifted and Talented students at high
school.
How do I know if my child is gifted?
Gifted children possess to an to an outstanding
degree a demonstrated ability or potential in one or
more of the following areas:
General intelligence, specific academic areas, visual
and performing arts, psychomotor ability,
leadership, creative thinking, interpersonal and
intrapersonal skills.
Current year 6 students are encouraged to apply
for entry to the IGNITE 2014 program.
Selection is based on performance in the ACER
assessment which will be held on Saturday 23rd
Feb 2013 at Aberfoyle Park High School.
