The Blind Men and the Elephant
There is a parable that tells in an ancient village all the people were blind. One day while walking
on the road, five men from that village came upon a man riding an elephant. The five men, who
had heard about elephants but had never been close to one, asked the rider to allow them to touch
the great beast. They wanted to go back to their village to tell the other villagers what an elephant
looked like.
The rider agreed and led each of the five men to a different part of the elephant. All the blind men
touched and stroked the elephant until they were certain they knew what the animal looked like.
In great anticipation they returned to their village to report their experience. The villagers gathered
around to hear about the elephant. The first man, who had felt the animal’s side, said, “An elephant
is like a great thick wall.”
“Nonsense,” said the second man, who had felt the elephant’s tusk. “He is rather short, round, and
smooth, but very sharp. I would compare an elephant not with a wall but with a spear!”
The third man, who had touched the ear, took exception. “It is nothing at all like a wall or a spear,”
he said. “It is like a gigantic leaf made of thick wool carpet. It moves when you touch it.”
“I disagree,” said the fourth man, who had handled the trunk. “I can tell you that an elephant is like
a giant snake.”
The fifth man shouted his disapproval. He had touched one of the elephant’s legs and concluded,
“An elephant is round and thick, like a tree.”
To this day, the men continue to argue, and no one in the village has any idea what an elephant
looks like.
Scriptures describe God in many different ways - because He is experienced in many different
ways. He is the Creator of the universe, but He is also the faithful friend. He is the righteous judge,
but He is also the forgiving Father. For us to understand God, or for us to understand the Bible, we
must carefully study the Word of God in its entirety. Whenever we perceive only one view of God,
or one view of the truth, we are likely to be misled.

Parish Advent Project
Help Those In Need
During the Season of
Advent, we as Christians are
asked to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. During Advent we will be collecting items for the
homeless, and those in need of assistance for Christmas.
Many homeless people and needy families in the
area come to the rectory for temporary help. The items
most needed to assist them are: gift cards for gasoline,
grocery stores, and fast food restaurants. Dry food goods
may be dropped in the containers outside the entries of
the Church.
The word Advent
derives from the Latin
word meaning coming.
The Lord is coming. We may reflect that every year at
this time we celebrate his coming, so that in a sense we
can lose the feeling of expectancy and joyful anticipation,
because at the end of the season, everything seems to
return to pretty much the same routine. If that is the case,
then our preparation may have been lacking and we have
therefore been robbed of much of the true meaning of
this season. During Advent we recall the history of God's
people and reflect on how the prophecies and promises
of the Old Testament were fulfilled. This gives us a background for the present. Today we can reflect on the past
track record of God and so begin to understand what it
means to us now for the sake of what is to come, in our
own future and that of our world.

SAFEGUARD THE CHILDREN
Shop safely this Christmas
If you let your kids go to the mall by themselves to
buy Christmas presents, you should talk to them about
potential dangers they need to guard against.
Christmas is the busiest time of year for commercial
retail, which means that malls and shopping centers
will be more crowded, and younger kids and teens
who are alone may be a target for kidnappers and other
dangers. Talk to your children about being aware of
their surroundings, and where to go for help. Be in
contact with them while they’re shopping, and have a
check-in place and time set if you’re splitting up.

Prayer before Communion

Lord, I am not worthy
that you should enter under my roof,
but only say the word
and my soul shall be healed.

This prayer before Communion is an adaptation of the words of the Roman centurion from the Gospels of
Matthew and Luke. “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be
healed” (Mt 8:8; cf. Lk 7:6-7).
The most significant point in the prayer is not the “roof” but the attitude of humility and faith of the Roman centurion. He
asks Jesus to heal his servant. But because of his feeling of unworthiness to receive Jesus in his house, he expresses
his strong faith. He firmly believes that by the great power of Christ’s word his servant will be healed instantly and distantly. Like the Roman centurion, we do not deserve Jesus because of our sins. We need the centurion’s sincere humility and strong faith before receiving Jesus Christ in Holy Communion.
However, since the concrete and vivid image of “roof” strikes us in our prayer, it may be helpful to recall the
poetic words of Christ who uses the image of entering a house to express his wish of seeking fellowship with us:
“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, [then] I will enter his house and
dine with him, and he with me” (Rev 3:20).
The change from “I shall be healed” to “my soul shall be healed” (sanabitur anima mea) is not to be interpreted
to mean that only the spiritual dimension of our being receives the healing effect of Communion. Christ heals the whole
human person by directly dealing with the root cause of all sickness: the moral and spiritual brokenness within each of
us.
The new translation indicates the radical and complete effect of the healing process brought about by receiving
the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. If Communion is truly “the medicine of immortality,” it heals our soul,
which is the “seed of eternity we bear in ourselves, irreducible to the merely material” (Catechism of the Catholic
Church, 33).
This radical and complete healing by Jesus is clearly illustrated in the story of the paralytic who was brought
down from the roof by four men. They could not pass through the door because of the crowd. Instead of immediately
saying, “Walk, you are healed”, Jesus said, “My son, your sins are forgiven” (Mk 2:5). Here, as Pope Emeritus Benedict
XVI says in his book, Jesus of Nazareth, “the priority of forgiveness for sins as the foundation of all true healing is
clearly maintained” (2012, 44).

Referendum to Overturn Aid-in-Dying Law

SB 128, a bill that would have legalized assisted suicide, passed the CA Senate but was stalled in the
Assembly Health Committee for lack of support. Bill supporters reintroduced assisted suicide in a Special Session
as ABx2-15. This bill was rushed through both the CA Assembly and Senate with fewer committee reviews and
less debate than a regular session requires. Fast-tracked as it was, Governor Brown signed ABx2-15 into law.
Why We Should Overturn This Law
This law is a grave threat to society aside from our Christian belief that only God can end our life. There are so
many bad aspects of the law. Here are some of them:
1. The physician who prescribed the lethal medication is not present when the terminally ill patient actually takes the medicine. If there are complications or allergic response to the lethal medication, the patient will
experience more harm than what the patient hoped to avoid.
2. The law is open to abuse. An interested heir who consider the care as a burden may also want to
have the ill parent die so they can get the inheritance. They are allowed as witness in their parent’s/patient’s
request for the lethal medication. On the physician side, they can use this means to hide a malpractice.
3. There are numerous occasions when an illness has been diagnosed incorrectly.
4. An ill patient may want to get the lethal medicine only because they are in a stage of depression. Most
of them will no longer want the lethal medicine when they get the proper care and love from family and friends.
5. Oregon, a state that has legalized physician assisted suicide has experienced abuses on the system.

If you were not able to sign a petition for the Referendum to Overturn Aid-in-Dying Law in church last Nov.
21 and 22, you can still do so by going to the rectory. The rectory staff will assist you in signing the petition. The
deadline is on Dec. 15, 2015.
We also urge you to ask your relatives and friends to sign the petition. Blank petition forms are available
at the rectory for you to take. Please return the signed petition by Dec. 15, 2015 to the rectory to be counted.
Most errors we got at our signage are residents of LA county signing with residents of another county in
one form (there should be a separate sheet for each county); and, some have not written their full name, street
address and some were not legible. If you have any doubt of how you signed the petition and desire to overturn
this law, please sign on a new form at the rectory and we will delete the previous faulty signature before submitting the petitions. We will make sure that there are no duplicate signatures. Thank you for your cooperation.

2016 Parish Registration/Re-registration Update
Have we lost track of you? Is your information up-to-date?
On January 1, 2016, we will begin reconciling information on file for each of our
parishioners to ensure that it is current and that you remain active. If our records
show no contact either through parish envelopes or through use of your parish ID
number, or that you have not provided updated registration information since July 1,
2014, you will no longer be considered an active member of the parish.
If you are receiving envelopes but our records show you are not using them, we will discontinue sending
them in an effort to reduce our costs. Alternatively, we encourage your use of your ID number on pew
envelopes to ensure that information we have on file accurately reflects your donations for income tax purposes. If you do not remember your ID number, our Rectory Office staff will be able to assist you.
We also strongly encourage you to complete a re-registration form once every two years if you do
not use envelopes so that we do not inappropriately deactivate your registration. Please use the form which
is available in the vestibule of the Church or in the Rectory Office, and either drop it off at the Rectory Office
or place it in one of the baskets during collections.
If you are new to our parish, we welcome you and ask that you complete a registration form as soon
as possible. Once registered, you will then be notified of your parish ID number.
