Avenues & Views Page 1 Eldercare West Little Baby! Lots of Love It was fun to watch smiles and joy on the ladies faces as they looked at 6 month old Axton who provided us with an intergenerational visit at Eldercare West. Axton is the great grandson of June Nye who attends our program every day. Her daughter, who is the baby’s grandmother transports her to the program. It did not take long for a group of our ladies to gather around little Axton and enjoy his sweetness. Eldercare East Pictured here are: Sweltering temperatures and heavy (L-R) June Nye, rain can certainly put a damper on summer Ella Cromwell, plans. Eldercare East found a way to beat Shirley Clawser the unpredictable weather. All of the and Geraldine program participants enjoy keeping active, Brown. and bocce ball is a great way to do just that! Everyone took turns playing and cheering each other on. PossAbilities Hazleton PossAbilities in Hazleton has been soaking up as much rays of sunshine as they can get! Earlier in May, each individual took the opportunity to plant a flower for a special lady in their life for Mother’s Day, while also planting some love at their program as well. In addition to planting, every individual enjoyed having the opportunity to show off some of their artistic ability outside with sidewalk chalk. Although PossAbilities Hazleton is a newer member to the Avenues family, we continue to blossom opportunities and growth for those we serve in each direction we choose to grow. Eldergarden On May 11, Eldergarden held their annual Senior Olympic Games. Participants competed in Bean Bag Toss, Horseshoes, and Basketball. Those who did not complete cheered the athletes on. Following the Games, participants celebrated with a medal ceremony. It was an exciting day for all! April 2016 PAGE 2 Home & Community Jeffrey Saylor participates in the Home and Community Program. Jeffrey is becoming more independent with making decisions for himself in the community. In this photo, Jeffrey requested to be accompanied to The Red Lion Restaurant. Here, he independently ordered dinner. Jeffrey is taking the initiative to be more social, independent and engaged in the neighborhood. Avenues Foundation 28th Annual Duck Race Results The Avenues Foundation held its 28th Annual Duck Race on Sunday, April 24, 2016, at Walmart Supercenter in St. Clair. The weather was great and we had an exceptional turn out from all of our friends of Avenues. Festivities began at noon including a performance by the Avenues Choir and concluded with our duck race starting at 3:32pm with 5,671 rubber ducks racing to the finish line. This event continues to be successful each year due to the support we receive from the members of our community. We would like to say thank you to our corporate sponsors (M&T Bank, CACL Federal Credit Union, Sophy Jewelers, National Penn Insurance, North Ward Social Club Est. 1941 and Walmart) for helping make this event possible. A special thank you goes out to our Duck Race Committee and volunteers for the event. Our staff does an outstanding job volunteering their time to sell as many tickets as possible. Our Business Challenge participants sell for weeks to help us reach our goal each and every year. Robin’s Diner has won the Business Challenge for the 8th consecutive year selling a total of 190 duck tickets. The fact that this event has just completed its 28th year is a testament to the hard work put in by all our volunteers year in and year out! Avenues & Views Page 4 PossAbilities Central Over the last few months program participants at PossAbilities Central have been actively engaged in a variety of activities. Staff assisted individuals with creating magazine collages of their favorite things, dying Easter eggs, painting, coloring, exercising, playing bingo and singing karaoke. To celebrate spring, program participants constructed bird houses using old 2 liter soda bottles and made flowers out of cupcake wrappers. We celebrated Earth Day by baking cookies that looked like the Earth. While out on a nature walk, staff and consumers found a bird’s nest full of eggs. Later they were able to revisit the nest and see the baby birds after they hatched. While some attended the Special Olympics, those that could not attend had their own Special Olympics here at program. Program participants competed in a variety of games and earned medals for participation. Staff and individuals also enjoyed many games of “balloon volleyball” using paddles made from paper plates and Popsicle sticks. For Memorial Day, staff helped program participants to create firework paintings with forks. Staff and consumers took a day to tie-dye shirts with red and blue dye to wear at the Memorial Day picnic. There have also been some day trips to Locust Lake State Park, Country Junction, the Big Diamond Car Show, Day of Wellness, Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs baseball game, Cabela’s, Hickory Run State Park, and nature walks in the yard here at program. As summer approaches everyone looks forward to having more fun and making more memories. Kelly L. Dougal PossAbilities Central PossAbilities North Everyone at PossAbilities North Adult Training Facility has been busy. In March, we celebrated Easter and spring by having a party that included making Easter crafts, games, snacks, & cake. In April, the program had a great time going to the Day of Wellness at the Schuylkill Mall with several of the consumers singing in the Avenues’ Community Connections choir. May began with a fun filled day going on an outing to a Reading Phillies baseball game and going bowling at Spare Time bowling alley in Hometown for the Annual Day of Caring, sponsored by Air Products. Air Products also provided lunch for everyone who bowled. With the weather getting warmer, we’ve also gone on several trips to Stoyer’s Dam and are looking forward to a busy summer.
