October 7. PSNA District 6 welcomes the public to their presentation of Integrative
Alcohol & Drug Use Disorder Treatment in Primary Care in Pittsburgh. The event
begins at 5:30 pm with a light supper. Registration required.
October 8. PSNA District 2 will host “Women and Heart Disease” at the Reading
Hospital beginning at 6 pm.
October 9. PSNA District 4 invites you to attend a Town Hall from 6 - 8:30 pm.
The event will be held at the University of Scranton, DeNaples Center.
October 14. Join PSNA District 4 for Lost That Caregiving Feeling ... Compassion
Fatigue. This event will be held at Nazareth Student Center, Marywood University.
October 16. PSNA District 25 and the Montgomery County Nurses Association
invite you to a dinner and legislative dialogue at Cafe LaFontana, Hatboro. October 17. Calling new-to-practice RNs! We know how hard you work, so unwind
at PSNA’s Young Professional Kick-Off at the Hershey Vineyards. The evening

October 20. PSNA’s Annual 5-County Dinner is scheduled at the Plymouth Meeting Double Tree. AnnMarie Papa, RN, DNP, CEN, NE-BC, FAEN, FAAN, will present What’s Your Motive: Strategies to Mitigate Incivility and Lateral Violence. Cash
bar opens at 5 pm, dinner is served at 6 pm and the program begins at 7 pm. $45. October 22. PSNA District 27 will hold a meeting at 5:30 pm at Country Cupboard,

October 24. Register today for Medical Marijuana: Myths & Medicine. Join us
at Wilkes University from 8:30 am - 12:30 pm. As medical cannabis continues to
be used in surrounding states and possibly Pennsylvania, nurses and healthcare
workers must understand the history, medical uses and impact on our bodies.

of Healthcare Innovation News. Dr. Moyer is the director of professional development at PSNA and Population
Health Certificate coordinator at Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences/OneGroup Performance Solutions.
Diane M. Breckenridge, PhD, MSN, RN, ANEF, has accepted a position as chair and professor in the Department of Nursing at National University, California. Her experience, recognition and global work include: nationally-elected member, Nursing Education & Research Council; board member, PA League for Nursing Area #1;
government relations, PSNA; and Judith Braun Excellence in Research at the National Gerontology Conference, 2011. Dr. Breckenridge has received many awards including the 2012 PSNA Nurse as Global Citizen
Award.

for the History of Nursing annual conference in Connecticut. Dr. Kenny is the AAHN treasurer.

The Pennsylvania Nursing Congress met in Harrisburg on
September 10, 2014. The main presentation on telehealth was
provided by Lehigh Valley Health Network’s Sharon Kromer,

Other speakers included PSNA Director of Government Affairs
Kevin J. Busher and PA Action Coalition Executive Director
Frances Ward, PhD, CRNP. The afternoon concluded with an
open discussion on the new child abuse requirements for RNs, concerns over NPs ability to practice
independently and collaboration of nursing specialties for better care of patients.

HR 920 – Safe Staffing Study Resolution: In June, the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives overwhelmingly supported HR 920 sponsored by Rep. Mauree Gingrich (R-101). The resolution calls for a study to
be conducted by the independent agency known as the Joint State Government Commission. HR 920 directs
the commission to study safe and appropriate staffing by professional bedside nurses in the Commonwealth’s
hospitals and health care facilities. HR 920 further directs the commission to study the cost of serious preventable adverse events, as well as the average shift length and overtime requirement for professional bedside
nurse staffing. PSNA supported HR 920 and is proud to announce that the study is to report back to the House
of Representatives by June 2015. PSNA continues to advocate for legislation in which professional bedside
nurses are included in the development of proper staffing levels.
Child Abuse Education: The new law regarding mandatory continuing education of child abuse for health
care licensee reporters in Pennsylvania will take effect in 2015. The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association
(PSNA) has created resources for registered nurses in the Commonwealth. The PSNA Department of Government Affairs and the PSNA Department of Professional Development have partnered to create education for licensed nurses as well as nursing students preparing to graduate. This education is currently under review for

Ruth Krommes Throne, RN, passed away in July 2014. Ruth earned her RN from the Hazleton State Hospi-
tal School of Nursing in 1945. Before joining the staff at Hazleton State Hospital, she served as a private-duty
nurse. After accepting a position at the Hazleton hospital, Ruth worked in the pediatrics department and later
as head nurse in the medical-surgical department. Ruth was a member of the Luzerne County District, Pennsylvania State Nurses Association; the American Nurses Association; and the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association. She was also a member of the Hazleton State General Hospital Women’s Auxiliary.
Daniel F. Clark, Esq., 59, passed away on September 28, 2014. The former State representative and long-
time resident of Juniata County was known for his tireless dedication as a public servant. He served as the
Juniata County District Attorney from 1984-1988 and as State representative for the 82nd Legislative District
from 1989-2002. He returned to the legislature in 2011 to serve as chief counsel for the House Republican Appropriations Committee. Through his work with the Appropriations Chair William Adolph, Dan became a tireless
advocate for nurses, most recently working on PSNA’s Safe Staffing legislation. Dan’s passing will leave a void
throughout the Capitol and the nursing advocacy community.
In early 2014, Dorothy Ellen “Dort” Gregg passed away at the age of 93. Dort was a charter member of the
American Academy of Nursing and was one of the pioneers along with Hildegard Peplau of psychiatric nursing. She began her career in psychiatric nursing in 1944, presented at numerous national and regional meetings,
and authored articles on psychiatric nursing that are still referred to today. Dort was a lifetime member of the
American Nurses Association (ANA) and was appointed a Charter Member of the Academy of Nurses (FAAN).
She was also a recipient of the ANA Division of Psychiatric Nursing Award for Contributions to Advancement
of Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing. Among her numerous theoretical contributions to nursing literature are
professionally recognized classic publications. Often referred to as “the grandmother of psychiatric nursing,”
this quiet, caring and brilliant scholar touched thousands of students across the nation.

The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association (PSNA) is offering a facilitated workshop built around its publication, When Nurses Hurt Nurses Workbook. This workshop awards 7.0 continuing nursing education credits. When Nurses Hurt Nurses
Workbook was created in partnership with Sigma Theta Tau International and is
authored by Cheryl Dellasega, PhD, RN, CRNP.
Nursing is viewed as the most trusted and caring profession and yet nurse-onnurse bullying is a reality. Not only does it affect morale and professional self-esteem, but it jeopardizes patient care. When Nurses Hurt Nurses Workbookprovides
guidance on recognizing relationally aggressive behaviors, diffusing confrontational situations and applying interpersonal communication skills. Dr. Dellasega
equips nurses with tools to recognize relational aggression and promote change. Learning Activities enhance the
reader’s application of these tools. By the end of this workbook, nurses will find their “a-ha” moment. This is an
essential resource in creating a safer, more respectful workplace.
The workshop cost of $500 includes a bundle of 10 workbooks and four live one-hour webinars for 10 RNs. Participants can be added for $50 each. PSNA offers an optional four-hour live in-person conference (additional fees
will apply). All live sessions will be presented by PSNA.

About the Author: For more than 25 years, Dr. Dellasega has been working as a researcher, counselor, teacher
and nurse practitioner. She is the author of six books including Sigma Theta Tau International’s publication, When
Nurses Hurt Nurses. As a professor of humanities in the College of Medicine and professor of women’s studies at
The Pennsylvania State University, Dr. Dellasega is actively involved in medical education, conducts research on
psychosocial issues and leads community outreach efforts.
