VOL. XII Issue 34 August 28, 2016 The Fountain of Life Published weekly by the Lithia Springs Church of Christ: Spreading the gospel to the Lithia Springs community. Larry Acuff, Evangelist ELDERS….Gary Culbreath, 770.485.5110; Eddie Cox, 404.735.7515; Keith Dula, 770.756.1374; Larry Acuff, home 770.920.0498, cell 404.932.5376 DEACONS….Tim Henderson, Ron Pinkston, Ron Thornton, Michael Lovelady “EIGHT SOULS WERE SAVED BY WATER” Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water” (1 Pet. 3:20). Eight souls! Just eight? If the Bible is right, and it most assuredly is, that verse is rather revealing. How many people lived at the time? Don’t know but approximately over one million. Again, I have no idea but it doesn’t matter because however many there were, they were lost. Recently in a restaurant the observation was made as to how many saved people would have been there. Very few, if any, other than our group. What a revealing verse. Here are some thoughts. Noah was a preacher of righteousness. The scripture say, “And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly” (2 Pet. 2:5). Noah preached over 100 years yet only eight were saved. We must continue today to carry out the great commission (Mt. 28:19-20; Mk. 16:15). God is longsuffering. This means God is patient. God is merciful. It’s everlasting (Ps. 100:5). We often wonder why God continues to let this earth stand with all the wickedness that is in the world. God loved us so much that he gave his son to die (Jn. 3:16) that we can be saved. Human mentality says, “I’d zap’um all today.” God’s mentality is patience and love. The word waited is significant. God waited! God is waiting today. Only eight souls were saved. This will show you the power of Satan and of evil. The bible describes the time of Noah as very wicked by saying, “And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually” (Gen. 6:5). Over one hundred years of preaching and only eight were saved. Never underestimate the power of the devil. The Bible says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Pet. 5:8). Folks have this idea, “oh, I can stop anytime I choose.” You can, but the devils goal is to keep you from choosing that option. Look at the word “few”. We find that word in another place in the Bible. Note Jesus Sermon on the Mount when he said, “Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it” (Mt. 7:13-14). “…few there be that find it.” Jesus also said, “Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many, I say unto you, will seek to enter in, and shall not be able” (Lk. 13:24). They make the choice not to enter the strait way. “Eight souls were saved by water.” Peter continues with these word, “The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ” (1 Pet. 3:21). As they rejected Noah, so many today reject Jesus and refuse to be baptized for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38). larry Lithia Springs Church of Christ 7223 S. FROM THE CUFF I want to express my appreciation to the congregation for the wonderful support that you continue to give to me as your preacher. Being engaged in meetings, television programs, lectureships, out-of -town funerals, plus many varied activities relative to the work of the Lord you are always there to support and encourage. It would not be possible for me to accomplish the things which I do without the kind of support you give. Eddie, Gary and Keith are tremendous elders who have encouraged me in many ways. I thank God for these men. They all work hard to lead the congregation. They take on my responsibilities when I am gone and always check to make sure things are good with me and Janet. They are willing to speak and teach when I am a way. Others such as Bro. Charlie or our deacons Tim Henderson, Michael Lovelady, Ron Pinkston and Ron Thornton are always willing to do what needs to be done. Jane Culbreath and Phyllis Roper format and email the bulletin each week. All of you are a great blessing. The Lithia Springs congregation is a great church and I love you very much. Thank you for allowing me to be your preacher. TRAVELING PILGRIMS On September 13th we will begin our sixth year of Traveling Pilgrims. We are going back to Tuesday’s this year. Traveling Pilgrims Men’s Bible Class (Meets 2nd Tues- day of each month) (Last Thursday of each month) The Fountain of Life Television Program Gospel Meetings Good Works Still Count Submitted by Gary Culbreath Several years ago a convention was being held in Philadelphia and every room was filled. A couple came to the last place they found and asked for a room for the evening; the clerk informed them that all the rooms were filled. They were about to leave when he stopped them and called housekeeping. He told the maid to change the sheets on his bed and allowed the couple to use his room. They paid for the night and the clerk thought no more about it. Six months later the clerk was asked to come to New York with all expenses paid for an interview. He left the interview with a new job…he was the new manager of the newly formed Astoria Hotel. The guest that lodged in his room was Mr. and Mrs. John Jacob Astor! Good works still count. Each day we rise from sleep we should read Colossians 3:17 “ And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him”, and then apply it to our lives. Good works still count. God knows about them and nothing done to help others, especially if done in His name, goes unnoticed. Watch The Fountain of Life every Saturday at 7:00 am on channel 57. Also set your DVR and record it if you cannot view the program.
